View Full Version : 40 Acre Backlot Outside scenes
Mrdata 03-16-2008, 05:05 PM I have been going through the 40 acre backlot website.
The studio backlot that does not exist anymore was where mayberry was filmed!
It has a lot of pics of the different buildings and I thought I would watch some episodes of TAGS to try and see the buildings on film.
Well I have watched several episodes but they never go outside!
When did they start filming outside?
What Episodes?
Anyone who has not been to the 40 acre backlot website it is great!

It was in germany!:D
Amazing what they can do when filming scenes make you think they are thousands of miles away!
Make fake snow look real too!
It's a shame they tore down the 40 acre backlot someone could have made big bucks with tours!
Glad you like the website be sure and click on the "Tour" link on the website if you haven't already.

I have never payed that much attention but I'll bet all the star trek episodes where they go back to old earth were filmed there!
Charles
treky 06-30-2008, 02:15 AM no, I don't think they were; they just filmed that one there. But not the entire episode; just the scenes at the begining where Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Janice Rand beam down, and are walking around. (for all you other trekies, it's the episode "MERI")

I know they filmed outside a lot in the 1st season, But they had great outside shots in the episodes Mayberry Goes Hollywood and Ellie for Council .
ethelmaepotter 07-01-2008, 03:31 PM 40 acres was a part of the Desilu-Culver Studios. The Culver Studios still exist on Washington Blvd. in Culver City but the 40 acre backlot was sold of in the early 1970s and it was eventually razed. I live in Los Angeles and for a time, lived not too far from the area where the old 40 acre backlot once stood. It is now just a huge industrial park with warehouses, some independent production companies but mostly private commercial businesses.

It is a shame that they tore that down. It seems to me that they could have preserved it.

The Star trek episode "City on the edge of Forever" was filmed in the mayberry set of the 40 acre backlot.
If you don't believe it watch it as Kirk and edith Keeler are walking and she mentions McCoy they walk right past Floyds Barbershop.
Also the alley scene where they got there change of clothes was the very same alley used in the old Superman series where he always went to change into superman. The same area was Metropolis in that series.

treky 09-21-2008, 10:11 PM yea, I forgot about that one. And I never knew that the outdoor Metropolis scenes in "THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN" were also filmed there. I know that the Daily Planet building in that show was really the Los Angeles city hall.

Thanks a bunch for sharing the link, it's so interesting! I never knew Star Trek, and Batman were also filmed at the backlot along with the other shows. Too bad the backlot got torn down it would have made for a great in person tour

If you watch this episode of the old Batman tv show it takes you on a Batmobile ride right through the Gomer Pyle outdoor set and many other parts of the long ago torn down 40 acre backlot .
here is the link if you pause it just as the Batmobile is passing the quonset hut you will see something you never saw before!
The back of the quonset huts on the left hand side of screen in the closing credits They have no back walls!

Big Fred Fan 10-29-2008, 11:07 AM An AMAZING website! Makes me wanna go "Home"!
I've been watching a lot of Hogan's Heroes lately. The set they built was very impressive. It must have been tough for the cast to try to look cold all the time when they were shooting in the L.A. heat.
;)
Dud Wash 11-23-2008, 01:08 PM There's also an interesting film on Youtube of Desi Arnez flying over the lot in a helicopter and you get a get a good aerial view of the 40 acres. I believe it was done in 1965, but I'm not sure.
