No, in the 1st season she looked younger than she did in the later seasons with all of those big wigs that she wore. So I DISAGREE

Well, I don't agree she looked like Mother Jefferson's younger sister, but the bun and the way she was dressed, made her look matronly. She appeared younger as she did away with the bun and the house dresses.

To me, her and George looked YOUNGER as the series went on, try posting a photo of George from 1975 and then 1985 and you will see he looks 55 in season 1 and 45 in season 10

When I say younger sister I mean, Mother Jefferson was 77 at the time and Louise looked 64

I didn't like the bun or her clothes the first season. I don't think she looked old, maybe unsophisticated. Also, Louise was uncomfortable with spending money in the first season. By the end of the series, Louise was more of a career woman and her hair and clothes were more appropriate for someone living in a deluxe apartment in the sky.

I think they tried a lot of looks with Isabel Sanford because you have to remember, she was old enough to be Hemsley's mother! In later years, I think she was too heavily made up....almost like a drag queen or something.

I often wondered how often did we actually see Isabel's own natural hair on The Jeffersons.

Some of the wigs that Isabel wore were too wiggy and obvious.

Some of her clothes in the latter seasons were not flattering on her with her built especially the one's where she showed so much cleavage. The Hawaii episodes with her in the bikini. Let's don't even go there.

As a matter of fact, when Isabel Sanford saw herself in that Mae West costume in that one episode, she said she was not happy with how she looked. I believe she then went on a diet.

I never understood--she started off those episodes with her traditional wig look and then in Hawaii, she has shoulder length hair!

Some of Isabel's wigs were very big and ugly- to me if a woman is going to wear a wig, if it's not part of a gag of some sort, it is better for it to be more understated and less obviously fake- her braided bun in the first year was one thing- but the Marie Antoinette numbers were way over the top. The bigness was probably to detract from her weight though.

In the Hawaii episodes, Florence's hairstyles were very distracting- she has on a different wig or hairdo in every scene.

Boy in 227, Marla Gibbs really went to town on the wigs!! It wasn't until like the final season, that Marla went "oh the hell with it" and wore her own natural short 'do.

And Ja'net Dubois on Good Times practically wore a different wig for every episode she was on!

What was it abt the black women on television, they all had to wear wigs? Was it in their contracts or what?

I am sure it had to do with the quality and/or length of their real hair and the ability to style it or lack thereof, hence the reason they had to resort to using wigs. Look at Esther Rolle. Her hair was very short. Couldn't do much with it. Ladies back then either had short hair or afros. Even the Thelma Evans character had a hairpiece attached throughout most of the run of Good Times. On top of their real hair not being long enough to do anything with it, here you throw on them these cheap looking wigs (which back then seemed of great quality).

Nowadays, wigs and extensions are of better quality and can pass as real hair. Some of them are made from real hair. But still, black women are having to resort to wearing extensions, attachments, pieces and wigs for whatever reason, whether it is personal or because of styling reasons.

I think black women were ask to wear wigs a number of reasons: To seem more appealing to a broader audience or maybe they thought it would match the charactes personality. The Willona character was fashionable, so I can understand a different wig on almost every show. Isabel's wigs(most of them) made her look younger and more appealing. Florence's wigs in my opinion represented the fact that she didn't consider herself attractive, so why worry about how her wig looked. Thelma Evans hair pieces I think were made to make her look younger in the first few seasons, then more elegant towards the end. Just my opinions.

You are making me wish I could get the Hawaii episodes on DVD. LOL! I have no recollection of a bikini. Did I block it out on purpose?

On season 6, she wore this choker necklace that made her neck folds look unfortunate-- like those of a bulldog. This was on the anniversary episode where Louise gets jealous about George's young ditz secretary who says "jazzy", and their plans for the romantic night at the hotel get ruined by their fighting, Louise's suspicion, etc...

Those Jeffersons' costume designers dressed her in some intersting outfits, many of which were ostentatious drag queen attire, but that was part of the fun. She looked nice usually, and if not nice she looked interesting. We loved that she could enjoy her newfound money in fashions and new looks, even if they were a little drag queen like.

I always thought the bun made her look older. It wasn't very flattering on her at all; she wore it that way on "All In the Family" and I remember thinking that when "The Jeffersons" became a hit, she looked a whole lot better.

I always thought that black women wore wigs because it was not that much of an option back in the 70's, 80's. The weave was not as established as it is now, the jerri curl was in and black styling products was no where near the empire it is today and the hot comb was in. Looking back at old pictures I'd have to say damn!!! what was up with my hair? I really needed a perm but I knew nothing about it in the early 80's.

That's a good assessment. I actually kind of liked her hair in the bun but the clothes she wore were a bit on the matronly side.
