View Full Version : More New Creations From TJL's Workshop!
Here are a few new items I have been tinkering with at the shop, all will be on view this Spring on my 9th Avenue Design website.
This is a little "Baby Tree" sculpt I did today. It's about 8" high.
I saw this cool picture of a statue online, so I did a little copying and I came up with this.
This one is called "Preach."
This is a big sucker. It's a celtic themed cross I made with some 1/2 inch square tubing and a ring we use for decorative railings. The back part is cut out of an I-Beam. Still have to do more work on this one.

Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:04 PM OMG those are absolutely gorgeous. What a touch you have.
Question: How do you make them shiny?

Thank you. ;)
I cut my pieces using an Oxyacetylene torch, which leaves the metal very charred and full of slag. It's very ugly.
I then use a combination of standard grinding wheels on my grinders to clean up all the ugly slag and then I use flap discs, which are a much finer grinding disc to polish the metal to an almost glass like surface.
It strips off all the old rusty metal, exposing a nice clean surface.
If you have ever seen an episode of American Chopper, they always use flap discs to grind their welds.
Actually, truth be told, it's all done with magic.
;)

The website will be up in the next few months. I'm kicking around some ideas with a few computer guru friends.

Mikado 02-28-2008, 01:41 AM Youre talented man......I've seen more than one sculptor in art galleries who could learn something about composition and form, from you :clap
Thank you for all the kind words folks. I'm glad you like what you see.
The website will be up soon. I'm meeting with a friend tomorrow to discuss some ideas.
Here is another "Baby tree" i finished today. I made the tree the other day when I made the first one, and today i made the base and put it together.
Courtnee 02-28-2008, 11:24 PM Aww, I love the baby tree ones! So cute!

I like this one TJL.
I wanted to do another celtic cross using the same materials I used for the other cross, but I wanted to make it a bit bigger to hang on the wall, so I put this together yesterday.
The candle holder part is made from two kinds of mounting brackets we use for handrails.
This piece measures 16" high by 10" wide.
Candle not included.
;)
*ClassicPinUp* 02-29-2008, 07:11 PM ^ Wow, that is stunning!

Oh my gosh, that is incredible. So beautiful. I notice you have made crosses and the one that appears to be Jesus (my assumption), are those a theme you have or just what comes to mind at the time you are making something?

Not really. I don't have any specific themes in my work. Usually something just comes to mind or I see something that gives me an idea and I try make it.
I have used celtic symbols before because I'm half Irish and some of the symbols have interesting meanings.
The cross is something I made because the pieces are all cut with a grinder - I didn't have to use my torch. Sometimes i like to see if I can make something out regular materials just by welding them together.
