View Full Version : Why was CBS trying to do everything possible not to cancel this show?
TVFactFan 02-24-2008, 04:15 PM I mean usually when a show is struggling in the ratings, a network will just cancel it and be done with it but this show had so many time slot moves during it's original run to make you say-"why didn't CBS just cancel it if was moved that many times?
1st Move-to Wednesdays at 9:30pm
2nd move-to Saturday at 9:30pm
3rd Move-to Sunday at 9:30pm
4th Move-To 8:30pm on Sundays
5th Move-to 9pm on Sundays
6th move to Wednesdays at 9pm
7th move-to Mondays at 9pm
8th Move-to Sundays at 9:30pm
9th Move-to 8pm on Sundays
10th Move-to 9:30pm on Sundays
11th Move-to Tuesdays at 8:30pm
This many Moves and CBS Never gave up on it???-lol It showed that this show could not consistently deliver good ratings in no one set slot for a long period of time.

Jude The Obscure 02-26-2008, 02:14 AM Look up the yearly ratings Sol, for a better picture of how "Alice" did. The years it was on Sunday nights, "Alice" was usually a Top 10/Top 20 performer.

And then when it was taken off Sunday night it was doing bad again.
Jude The Obscure 02-26-2008, 02:18 AM This at a time when it was still a 3 Network universe and people still had to get their big ass off the couch to change the channel :D
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 02:19 AM You have to look and see what it was that CBS was ADDING to the line-up to cause them to make those changes. Or, what the other two networks were showing that caused CBS to make changes regarding Alice.

I still just find it strange to have a show moved so many times before saying-"this show is not performing well and it has to go". I see the last three years it didn't crack the top 30 at all

It was ranked #27 during the 1983-84 season. The final season it was DOA anyway especially when it was moved with the Jeffersons to Tuesdays opposite the A-Team. Everyone knew it was ending and unlike the Jeffersons they did film a last episode. In 1982-83 CBS made a mistake moving it to Wednesdays pairing it with the unfunny Filthy Rich and airing it opposite the Fall Guy and Family Ties. I didn't even follow it there and I was a big fan. No VCR back then...so luckily it was moved back to Sunday.
FredScuttle 02-27-2008, 10:51 PM I remember it being on Sunday most of it's run too. I didn't watch it the first couple seasons, but I did from about 1979 on. (I saw the first 3 seasons on the daily morning CBS airings, at least during the summer. I'm sure I missed some though). It was on Sunday nights in the 9th season, but moved to Tuesdays starting January 8th, 1985. Do you have the dates it made all those switches? I notice a bunch of the changes were just different time slots on Sundays,

No way to TIVO it Sonny in 83?-LOL
Ireneparalegal 02-28-2008, 12:00 AM I would love to see a schedule for all three networks during the 1/2 hour ALICE was shown...I am sure the changes had to do with what was being aired on NBC and ABC as well as any changes CBS had going on (adding shows or cancelling shows).
Also, the seasons (years) those changes took place.

1976-77 Wednesday ( Paired with AITF))- ABC Baretta, NBC Movie
1976-77 Saturday- ( Paired with AITF)- ABC Starsky & Hutch, NBC Movie
1977-78 Sunday -( paired with AITF)- both ABC And NBC had movies on
1978-79 Sunday ( paired with AITF)- both ABC and NBC had movies on
In October 1978 the variety show Mary was canceled and Alice moved up to 8:30 paired with ( AITF again) see AITF is moved all the time with Alice too. Movie's once again on the other networks.
March 1979- 1982 it was paired mostly with the Jeffersons . This was Alice's peak years. Movies are on the other 2 networks.
Fall 1982 it aired on Wednesdays with Filthy Rich opposite the Fall Guy and the Facts of Life which was paired with Family Ties. It was put on Hiatus until March when on Mondays it returned against That's Incredible and LHOTP.
1983-84 it was back on Sundays at 8. It now led off the night paired with ODAAT. ABC had Hardcastle & McCormick and NBC had Knight Rider. In January 1984 it moved to 9:30 paired with the Jeffersons again opposite movies on the other 2 networks. It stayed there into the 1984-85 season until December 1984. Then in January 1985 it and the Jeffersons were given the Tuesday death slot opposite the A-Team.
Mr. Television 02-28-2008, 12:32 AM I hope you can understand it Irene. If you don't just ask me. I got the schedule in front of me.

Ok, so for 3 years, it had its slot while teamed with AITF.
The following year, because of a canceled show (I thought so) ALICE was moved up to pair with AITF. It wasn't moved because of ratings or anything like that, another show was canceled and ALICE took over its spot. During this time the other networks have movies going on. So there is no competition as far as other sitcoms airing at the same time.
A year later it was paired up with The Jeffersons while the other two networks aired movies. Again, no competition. This continued for 3 years (3 seasons) without any changes.
Fall of 1982 is when it was aired opposite ABC's FALL GUY and NBC's FACTS OF LIFE.
HIATUS
1983-1984 ALICE was back on Sundays AT 8 p.m. while paired with ODAAT.
Jan. 1984 ALICE was moved to 9:30 p.m. while paired with The Jeffersons until December 1984.
Jan. 1985 ALICE and THE JEFFERSONS aired opposite the A-Team, the death slot for them.
Given that information from Sonny, it appears the changes that were made were not done every year, and when there was schedule changes, it was because of what was airing on NBC and ABC. No different than what any other show did at that period of time.
The way you made it sound Solomon, you made it seem like ALICE was in trouble all the time and the schedule changes were done to save the show. I don't see anything like that until 1982 with it being on hiatus. That is when it seems ALICE was in need of help. But looking at the schedule, you can easily see there were at least 6 years when ALICE wasn't moved. The first change came abt because of a canceled variety show on CBS. I had said that.

and the reason it was moved in 1982 was because CBS picked up Gloria and paired it with Archie Bunker's Place so one of the 4 Sunday night sitcoms had to move.
Also Alice was ranked # 8 in 1977-78, #13 in 1978-79, # 4 in 1979-80, # 7 in 1980-81, and #5 in 1981-82. So it was a top ten hit when it moved.

Thank you for those ratings. When you see it there in black and white, it makes it easier to see how well it really did.
When you post just the days and the time slot changes WITHOUT the years they occurred, it makes it appear ALICE was being moved around a lot and that it was in trouble.
I am sure there are many shows that can be listed that had just as many moves as ALICE.

Alice wasn't really in trouble until 1982. In 1983 it did move back to Sunday and it's ratings were nothing like they were before. It fell to 27th. I don't know what they were the year before. It was probably real bad. But the whole CBS Sunday night lineup was falling by then too. ABP and Gloria got canceled in 1983. ODAAT was no longer a top 20 show and was moved off Sundays during the 1983-84 season and it was gone at season's end. The Jeffersons were barely in the top 20 as well. I always liked CBS's Sunday night lineup then , especially because their was nothing on the other networks but movies. I was sorry to see it end.

I noticed that. ALICE started in 1976. By 1982 is when it hit trouble. That is seven seasons later. That is a long time before it hit the skids. Very impressive. And as you say, by 1983 not only was ALICE no longer in the top 20, neither were ODAAT and THE JEFFERSONS. The veteran shows had had their moments and it was time to close up shop.
ALICE had 11 changes done regarding its schedule. The show aired from 1976 til 1985...that's TEN YEARS. So, 11 time slot changes in 10 years is not at all amazing.
FredScuttle 02-29-2008, 10:24 AM Thanks for posting the dates/times they changed, and the shows they were up against. It really does help fill in the picture better.
McGillicuddy 02-15-2009, 11:16 PM I can't believe Alice was on for 9 years. It wasn't that great a show to have lasted that long. Should have packed it in after 5, and put their focus on "Flo".
catlover79 02-16-2009, 12:40 AM It lasted at least 2 seasons too long. It was obvious that Linda Lavin was tiring of the role, and it was really Vic Tayback, Beth Howland, and Celia Weston who carried the show by that point. Tommy wasn't on the show that much in the last couple of years, was he?
ThomasE 10-25-2009, 09:00 PM Well, Tommy was in college out of the city. I think the show did fine. It lasted for as long as it could. All was well in my opinion.

There's nothing wrong with feeling that way. To each his own!!
