View Full Version : So What Did Everyone Think of Last Night's Price Million Dollar Spectacular
mriggles 02-23-2008, 04:18 PM I have to say I enjoyed last nights show very much. I can officialy now say that I like Drew Carey as the host of the price is right. It took me a long time but I am finally coming to the realization that Bob is not coming back & its drews baby now. Drew has grown into the role very well & he has totally made the show his own.
I loved the set, i loved the camera shots, it was a very well done show. I like the fact that they have implemented other ways to take home the million dollars & it was nice to see someone finally take it home after many many unsuccessful tries.
I know he was up against the clock, but the only criticisim i had of Drew last night is when the guy won the million dollars Drew just kind of ended it like any other show with not enough fanfare in my opinion. Thats the only negative thing I can say.
We have 5 more primetime shows to look foward to in the next 2 months & each show has a different game as the million dollar game. Will we have another million dollar winner? HMMMMMMMMMMM we shall see;)

Mike, I am shocked!!!
1. How the heck did you get to watch it last night considering the marathon shifts we pulled last night???
2. You, a Die HardTPIR and Bob Barker fan likes Drew Carey!!!
Ireneparalegal 02-23-2008, 04:28 PM Mike is fair-minded and open-minded. He gave Drew a chance and seen what we had noticed all along. Drew is doing a great job!
BTW, here is what Brian posted on the other thread:
At 8 p.m., CBS started the night with the highest-rated show of the night, a primetime edition of "Price Is Right," 5.9/10, easily beating NBC's game show "1 vs. 100," 4.7/8. A repeat of "Bones" performed solidly for FOX, 4.6/8, while The CW gave over its evening to "Friday Night Smackdown." ABC languished in last place with a "Grey's Anatomy" repeat.

I knew the dude was taking home the million last night so I had extra interest in seeing how Drew would handle it. Like I said above, I know he was running out of time, I just didn't think enough was made of the shows very first million dollar winner.
Drew has been growing on me for weeks, but last night he really prooved himself to me. Is he Bob? No he is not, but thats the whole point Drew is Drew & he is making the show his own.
I can't wait till my trip next month to the show, I want to see for myself what is happening @ studio 33

You could count this as one of the historic moments of The Price is Right History! this is the best job Drew Carey has done. he made the show like his own last night. it felt like he was doing the show for years. i always criticized Director Bart Eskander and his crew poor camera shots. but Bart and Camera Crew did an excellent job with camera shots in HD last night. The set felt like primetime. we gave away $1 Million. i'm glad he won it he deserve it. i was telling my friends don't give up on The Price is Right just yet. i think this gotta be a record for Drew Carey he gave away $1 Million on both Power of 10 and The Price is Right.
Janice 02-23-2008, 05:54 PM Drew looked fantastic in his tuxedo. That guy who won the money, doing the cartwheels, was a riot! This was my husband's first time seeing Drew as host of TPIR. Before the show, I told him that there were varying opinions, and to please pay close attention to Drew, as host. After the show, my husband told me that they couldn't have found a better man for the job. He said that Drew is personable, funny, energetic, and genuinely cares about the contestants, and was helping them along, one woman in particular. He said it's just the old, 'People resist change' thing going on. He was very impressed.
I noticed that Drew puts his hands on the contestants often, their shoulders actually. It's nice, and speaks to his warmth as a person. I like how Drew smiles ear to ear, when someone wins or gets real excited. That's what he was doing when that woman with the eight grandkids was so excited. By the way, she looked too young to have that many grandkids. It was a fun show. When is it on again, at night. Is it six in a row, on Fridays?

Thanks Mike. I'm there, and I didn't watch TPIR before. It's all the publicity that caught my interest. All the people saying that Drew was bombing made me want to judge for myself, and now I'm hooked! :)

Mike, if you ever have time, I need to know about the screening process. I know they tell contestants to be enthusiastic. That's done on all game shows. Still, TPIR has some of the most excited contestants I've ever seen.

Janice what they are looking for is someone with real enthusiasm & someone who is on the brink of an explosion!! They want someone who will be good on TV... but trust me when I say they can tell if your faking it. Stan is very good at picking out people who are " playing it up" for the camera so to speak.
The key is to act natural, do not act nervous & you want to act like you want to be there at that moment more than anywhere else on earth.
If you have all day I can tell you about the true all day expierence that is your trip to price.... :)

OMG thanx for posting this. I liked seeing this again. Can't get enough of a good thing. Not to mention seeing Drew in that tux looking so damn fiiiiiine. ;) His reaction almost made me cry because you can tell he really was shocked, he couldn't believe it and he seemed so nice. Couldn't have happened to a better guy. :D
mriggles 02-23-2008, 07:45 PM Looking back on that clip, I think drew was just fine with the reaction... Im not sure how much I could expect i guess... I know how tight they are at the end of the shows & drew tends to be a bit on the late side with the timing

I know when I watched the big win last night, it seemed to be over too fast. I'm not sure whose fault that was, as how much could Drew do, if he only had so much time. Not sure if I'm getting my message across here, lol, but I know what I mean. I think that the first million dollar win in the history of TPIR should have been given more play. Even chat with the winner for a minute or two..."What are your plans for the money?", etc.

I was happy for him too. I like how right before he won, he leaned in and said into the microphone, "I want the million dollars."
Drew looked thrilled for him. He always looks happy when people win. I'm new to the show, but I'm not getting all this talk that Drew laughs at contestants. What I see is a gentleman, who is warm, demonstrative, shows genuine joy when they win. Drew's smile is contagious. He smiles constantly. Such a friendly guy.
Off topic, but I need to know. How much does Drew get paid for hosting TPIR? Miiiiikkke?????? ;)

I don't get that either Janice, abt Drew supposedly laughing AT the contestants. I have been a Drew fan too long to know that he is definitely laughing WITH people when funny things happen, whether it was on the Drew Carey Show, Whose Line, The Power of 10 and now TPIR. In defense of those who have said that Drew is laughing at the contestants, I can only say they don't have a history of watching any of Drew's shows and can't decipher laughing at or laughing with, although it is pretty obvious that he is laughing with the contestants. I can only imagine that those who find offense with Drew being a host are either:
Die-hard Bob Barker fans;
people who hate Drew Carey for whatever reason;
people who haven't given Drew a chance and only find fault in someone they already despise.
What would have been better, to have Bob Barker pass away before replacing his spot as host or have the man go out in style?

I agree Janice.. it all seemed a bit rushed, but knowing what I know about that show, its hard for drew since he usually has to be rather quick with the reveals at the end.

It took me a while to endorse him, but I said all along it would probably take me a whole season to get used to things. So i was a bit off
Back in July one of the first things out of my mouth when I heard it was going to be Drew was he has to make the show his own & folks I don't think there is any question he is doing just that!
Im glad Bob got the proper send off because for the last few years I was fearing he would pass on before he could get the proper send off

You have a way of putting things Mike and you were never nasty abt the whole Drew topic. Neither was Mikado. I can understand a different point of view and it's ok to be in the minority. Hey, it is just game show chatter afterall. ;) Anyhoo, thanx for all that you have given us regarding information and backstage stuff, it really makes it fun here. And you at least had an open-mind and gave Drew a chance. ;)
Let me ask, can someone attend a taping of the show WITHOUT actually being a contestant? I would love to attend a taping, but I don't think I could ever spin that wheel (if I was ever lucky enough to make it that far). I would love to just be in the audience and watch.
Janice 02-23-2008, 08:43 PM Regarding Drew's sign-off with the reminder to have your pets spayed and neutered, was that his idea to continue Bob Barker's tradition? Did Drew have a say in the matter? I think it's a terrific thing to do; however, I know that Drew is very civic-minded and has issues that are near and dear to his heart.
Let's play The Time is Right to pick Mike's well-informed mind!

absolutely Irene, you can inform the pages you do not wish to be on the show & they will " X " out your contestant number & you bypass the interview with Stan. I have to tell you though, that wheel is alot heavier than I imagined, but hey you can always have Drew help you ;)

Jude The Obscure 02-24-2008, 01:27 AM It was a very fun show! I enjoyed the moment when the guy realized his bid was under $1,000 of the actual retail price and that he actually won both showcases and the BIG PAYOUT! Of course, you can just imagine his tax burden now LOL

I think it's taxed at about 1/3. My husband and I hit the lottery for 20 grand back in 1999. After Uncle Sam took his cut, we ended up with 14 grand.
friendsfan77 02-24-2008, 02:51 PM It was a good show and Drew was in fine form. It was nice to finally see someone win a million dollars.
howierules86 02-24-2008, 06:21 PM I thought it was great to see a $1M winner with a much better way of winning it. Definitely a great special last night, can't wait to see the rest of them!
JulieSomoski 02-26-2008, 06:11 PM I forgot about replying after the show on Friday night, but I finally remembered :D
I loved the episode. I didn't enjoy anything more Friday night than watching The Price is Right. Drew was looking gorgious in that tuxedo . . . the entire episode just had a primetime feel to it, rather than daytime. There were definitely a lot of big wins and prizes. I loved how they started off the first being prize being a $60,000 car - it doesn't get better than someone winning a $60,000 car.
In the end, I could not believe the guy actually won the $1,000,000. I thought there was no way he was going to do it, but he did, and I couldn't be happier for the guy!
Did anyone else notice how calm Drew seemed for this episode? He really seemed a lot calmer that usual - I felt for the first time that this was Drew's show now. He looked so comfortable as host, I hope he keeps it up that way.
Janice 02-26-2008, 08:35 PM I read somewhere that those primetime shows will continue for the next five Fridays.
Ireneparalegal 02-26-2008, 10:10 PM They will Janice!!! :jig:
Janice 03-01-2008, 12:27 AM Did anyone watch tonight's show? I really enjoyed it. Too bad nobody won the million. It's great seeing Drew in a tux with a bow tie. How anyone can claim that he makes fun of contestants is beyond me. When he jumps up and down with them, I laugh like crazy. Drew looks so happy when they win.
The gals or "beauties", are real knockouts. Their gowns are stunning, and look like they belong on the Academy Award red carpet. I'd like to know the story on the wardrobe department. My guess is that designers loan their gowns to get their name in the credits. That little skit three of them did tonight, with the dancing and fake drinking was cute. Mike, do you have any insider information about the girls? I count six. I caught Drew checking one of the gals out, lol. My husband saw it too. We laughed. He's only human. How he keeps his eyes off them and on the games in a feat in itself.

Janice What info were you looking for? I do have communication with a few of the models on the show. I could probably find out anything you need.
Your are right though, the designers are looking to plug their merchandise & they loan & in some cases give tthe show those gorgeous & i mean gorgeous dresses.... God Gabrielle was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo smokin hot the other night;)
Ireneparalegal 03-01-2008, 05:02 PM I seen the show last night. Again, a great job and a great show. Drew had some laryngitis but he still did a great job.
I have seriously tried in vain to see what it is others claim they see abt Drew making fun of contestants, but it doesn't exist.
I know the british version of WHOSE LINE was hosted by a guy who is the polar opposite of Drew, so when I began watching Drew's version of that show, I was skeptic. I was like, "How will this funny guy able to host this version?" Well, Drew showed me that he did WHOSE LINE his way. He wasn't trying to impersonate or be like the british host. Drew made it his own style and that is what made me like the U.S. version much better. Drew would laugh right along with the audience, he made fun of himself when he could, Drew is awesome.

agreed, That is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. You basically have a 1 out of 150 chance of winning the million on that game...

Keep in mind Mike, that I wasn't a viewer of the show when Bob Barker was at the helm, which I think gives me an advantage when critiquing Drew. Of course, I can't compare them, as others can, but my mind is a clean slate, so I'm judging Drew, for his performance only. I don't have any of that, "He's no Bob Barker" mentality going on. With all due respect to Bob Barker, I also don't have that hero worship, he-walks-on-water mindset going on. This allows me to be objective in evaluating Drew, and from where I sit, he's doing a fantastic job.
Regarding the gals, anything and everything would be nice to hear, lol. It looks like a new group from what I used to occasionally see. There's one woman particular, I didn't catch her name, but she is drop-dead gorgeous. She's blonde, but not overly so, high cheekbones, big eyes. Barker's beauties were older, correct? Did they get ditched when Drew took over? How are they chosen? These girls look like supermodels to me. I imagine they can't be making all that much on TPIR. Then again, all the shows are taped in two or three days, right?.... so that would give them the flexibility to pursue other careers. Are some of them models or actresses? I wonder if they have any clauses in their contracts which prohibits them from other ventures.
Any in-fighting? Rarely do you see a group of beautiful women together with everything perfect. Big egos and ambitions in overdrive often leads to disputes over who's getting the most on-air time, things like that.
Janice 03-02-2008, 01:59 AM I have seriously tried in vain to see what it is others claim they see abt Drew making fun of contestants, but it doesn't exist.
You're right Irene, it doesn't exist. That's simply a case of people who don't like Drew for whatever reason. They can't point to any concrete examples on Drew's ineptness, so they make stuff up. Literally, they make it up, out of whole cloth. Drew touches his jacket pocket flap. Wooooow, fire the man now. Everyone has mannerisms. It's what makes us human. Johnny Carson used to tap his pencil on his desk. Jay Leno fiddles with his tie alot. Letterman takes constant sips from his coffee cup. The list goes on. If they wanted someone who didn't act human on TPIR, they should have got a robot to do the job, lol.
Brian Damage 03-02-2008, 03:23 PM A prime-time edition of "The Price Is Right" helped CBS score a ratings win on Friday.
CBS averaged a 5.2 rating/9 share for the evening. NBC and FOX tied for second at 4.2/7, with ABC not far behind at 3.9/7. The CW pulled down a 2.6/5.
In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS' 1.9 rating was good enough to take the top spot. FOX, 1.8, came in second, while ABC and NBC tied for third at 1.7. The CW trailed with a 1.4.
"The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular" earned a 6.2/11 for CBS at 8 p.m. A "Bones" repeat, 3.9/7, put FOX in second, ahead of "Amne$ia," 3.4/6, on NBC. ABC came in fourth with a "Grey's Anatomy" rerun. The first hour of "Friday Night Smackdown!" delivered a 2.6/5 for The CW.
CBS held the lead at 9 p.m. with a repeat of "Ghost Whisperer," 4.5/8. ABC's "20/20" and FOX's "House" rerun were right behind at 4.4/8. "Dateline" scored a 4.0/7 for NBC, while "Smackdown!" held steady for The CW.
At 10 p.m., a second hour of "Dateline" posted a 5.3/10 for NBC. CBS' "Numb3rs" drew a 4.9/9 to finish a little ahead of ABC's "20/20."

 Well said. Yep, it is a mannerism of Drew's (the pocket flap thingy) and YET, it doesn't keep him from making the contestants enjoy themselves, it hasn't kept him from giving a contestant a big hug, it hasn't kept him from doing his job bottom line. Drew seems to really be enjoying himself, like he gets a kick out of laughing WITH the contestants, making little jokes here and there abt certain products, etc. He isn't dry at all. He has fun. I watch him as much as I can because HE IS SOOOOO GOOD TO LOOK AT and besides, I am a Drew Carey fan from when he first debuted on television. He is a breath of fresh air. And if Bob Barker approved him, then everyone else who adored Bob Barker should trust his judgment abt Drew Carey.
Thank you Brian for that post abt the ratings!!!!!! :jig:  Seems like we shall be in for some more primetime TPIR. :cheer:
JulieSomoski 03-02-2008, 04:49 PM This was another great edition of the Million Dollar Spectacular. Last week's episode was obvioulsy more exciting, because a contestant actually won the million. I liked this one too, though, with or without the million. Drew continues to do a great job. I still think he seems a lot more relaxed and calmed with these primetime specials than he is at the daytime episodes for some reason.
Ireneparalegal 03-02-2008, 04:55 PM Janice, I think you may be thinking of Gabrielle Tuite.
She is gorgeous. She could do without all that tanning spray and still be fresh and lovely. The TPIR ladies always seem like they are having fun, as if they really get along well and enjoy what they do. I hope we can hear more from them like we used to with the old Barker's Beauties. Once in a while they would chat a little. I just hope we don't hear any scandals like we did when Bob was hosting. That was getting nauseating to hear abt supposed sexual misconduct, Bob's allegations that Holly was too fat, etc. Let's hope with these girls we have no problems like that.
Janice 03-03-2008, 05:14 AM I still think he seems a lot more relaxed and calmed with these primetime specials than he is at the daytime episodes for some reason.
It could be the ramped up excitement of the show that gives Drew more confidence, which makes him calmer. He's wearing a tuxedo, and everyone is excited about the million dollars, and it's an extra exciting atmosphere.
Actually, I think it's that tuxedo. Put a man in a tuxedo, and they think they're Bond, James Bond.

It's human nature to be resistant to change. I'm not a big fan of change myself, even good change, at first. Most of us are creatures of habit. It's not so much Drew that some people dislike. It's the fact that he's not Bob Barker. Of course there are people who just don't care for Drew, and they're entitled to their opinion. I think that if some of Drew's detractors would open their minds and give him a fair shake, they might see what we see, a cool fun guy. He's the kind of guy who would be fun to have a beer with, lol.
He'll never win everyone over, but he'll bring new fans on board. Like me. :D Like I said, no disrespect, but I don't have Barker on the brain. To me, Drew Carey Is Right For The Price Is Right.

Great news! Thanks for posting, Brian! I'm so happy to hear this. I wonder if Drew would ever agree to do the show every Friday night? I'm guessing TPIR doesn't want to chance giving away that much $$$ every week, although with ratings like that, it would pay for itself. It would be appointment tv with me. I love the show. It's on a bit too early in the morning for me, so I don't see it much. I'm not really in the mood for tv in the morning. I'm either just getting up or getting breakfast for my hungry bear, lol.

I'd love to see a primetime edition every Friday night. It did almost the exact same 2 weeks in a ro, which is better than what Ghost Whisperer was doing in that slot. Maybe CBS could extend the Million Dollar Spectaculars, or even think about doing a season of it. Like you, I'd make it must-see TV for me. I love watching it on Friday nights.
howilu 03-04-2008, 06:04 PM I think it's a great idea to have The Price is Right on as a weekly Friday night series. The original with Bill Cullen was also successful in a prime time version and considering the network's track record in the 8-9 timeslot since Joan of Arcadia was cancelled as well as the high ratings would motivate CBS to make the move permanent.
BTW, I have seen each of the prime time shows as well as the daytime version and Drew has really shown improvement as host. His delivery is getting better and he seems a lot looser.

Heidi Dawn 03-22-2008, 04:36 PM The million dollar specials were awesome! Who knew Drew would look so cute in a tux. I like the million dollar rule change; it was next to impossible for someone to win it on the big wheel and having the showcase winner spinning for a million was dumb. At least having the $1,000 range in the showcase allows them to have more million dollar winners.

CBS ran four primetime versions of the show Friday nights at 8 p.m. beginning in February, winning its time slot each week.
The four new specials of the show will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m., serving as a lead-in to Criminal Minds and putting it up against rival game show Deal or No Deal on NBC.
The new episodes of The Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular will begin airing April 30.

Mr. Morrison86 03-24-2008, 10:58 PM Yeah, they will be last two of six specials will return April 4th and last one will be April 18th and both of them times will be 9/8c instead of 8/7c. and they will be four more specials they announce today will be on wednesday beginning with April 30th. all four of them gonna be on wednesday. it will be 8/7c.

JulieSomoski 03-25-2008, 12:21 PM So, the 2 out of the 6 orgiinally ordered episodes have not aired yet, and will still air on Friday nights, coorect?

mateo096 03-25-2008, 06:50 PM Thats a huge spot for Price on wednesdays, going up against Deal. But, the previous 4 MDS's were so poorly advertised, it wouldn't surprise me if Deal does a lot better in the ratings.

Ireneparalegal 04-10-2008, 01:11 AM Did anyone catch the last primetime edition?
The girl won a million dollars playing the clock game. She got both prices in less than 10 seconds. She was shocked as hell. Drew looked so genuinely happy for her and he picked her up off the ground when she dropped to the floor after winning the $1 million dollars. She seemed to not know how the game was played so seeing how she guessed the price right off the bat on the first item was so damn exciting.

I caught that one. That was byfar the most exciting episode of the 6. Almost everyone won a prize that game. The first game was great, when the woman won the cars. The woman winning in the clock game was shocking to me. Now that I think back on it, though, both prices were really easy to guess. You could definitely tell Drew was happy for her - not ony that, she won the showcase too, didn't she? If she had won the million dollars twice . . .
Last night's episode was still good. Not that exciting, though. Only 1 person the entire show won something during the games. IT was the last Friday night edition until it returns on Wednesday nights. It'll be hard for me though, because Back to You is on FOX the same time as TPIR. I might have to DVR TPIR, or catch the first half and flip between the 2 for the second half.

The showcase showdown is the round when the big wheel gets spun. In the case you are referring to in the showcase, the contestant who bid second knew without a doubt that the other guy overbid so to be on the safe side he bid one dollar. It happens every now & then.

Jude The Obscure 04-12-2008, 05:16 PM I hope CBS doesn't have great expectations for Wednesdays. Won't the show be up against AI then? The show was doing gangbusters Fridays at 7pm and then the move to 8pm caused a slight dip. Wednesdays is just such a death slot on CBS. Look at how Power of 10 was quickly yanked. I hope TPIR does better than that one there.

No, it won't be up against Idol at 8pm (Idol's on at 9pm Wednesdays). But, you are right. Power of 10 completely bombed Wednesdays at 8pm. I just hope it does well enough to stay on Wednesdays. If not, CBS will probably hold off airing the episodes until the summer.
Ireneparalegal 05-01-2008, 03:58 PM How did the Wednesday edition fare in the ratings? Anyone know?
Also, I noticed in last night's edition when the guy who was spinning the wheel (the guy in the Navy) was giving a shout out he mentioned his sick mom and seemed rather sad. After he lost and was ready to leave the stage, Drew told him, "Say hi to your mom and God Bless her." I thought that was so damn sweet and kind of Drew. That goes to show his heart is in the right place and he really felt for that guy's mother. :bighug:
JulieSomoski 05-01-2008, 06:11 PM Irene, it supposedly did around 7.28 million viewers based on the fast affiliate ratings. My guess is that final ratings will be a bit higher, though. That is actually pretty good, considering it actually does have competition now on Wednesday nights. I watched the first half hour, then switched to Back to You for the last half. I thought it was really good, though. It was just very pleasant and nice to watch on a Wednesday night. I'll be enjoying the next 3 episodes for sure.

Yeah, they did little, if any, promoting for the show moving to Wednesdays. That's why I said 7.3 million was pretty good.
When I began watching it at 8pm, I almost forgot that Back to You was on at 8:30. I think next week I'll have to flip back and forth between the 2 shows.
GameshowGrandma 05-13-2008, 06:31 PM I'm new on the computer, but I found this game show web sit. I love the Price Is Right. I wish I had known about the Price Is Right Million Dollar Shows. I found a great book called How To Get Your Big Break And Win Big Money On Television Game Shows, and actually got on the Price Is Right about 8 months ago. When I got the book from Amazon, I thought it would just be a good keepsake because I LOVE THE PRICE IS RIGHT and watch. I'm a retired Grandmother, and I get my game show watching on! Anyway,I won crystal and expensive cutlery worth over $1,000, just what a Granny can use! Drew is a great host, and will be around a while. If you really want to be successful on a game show, get the book. It helped an old lady like me get on stage, you can too. Gotta go rest my eyes.

Jude The Obscure 05-14-2008, 11:35 PM tonight's episode was just ok, nothing overly exciting. Just too bad CBS uses this show as fresh meat versus Idol.
Heidi Dawn 05-15-2008, 01:56 PM Last night's MDS was great! A Porche finally appeared on the show after being banned for 15 years (Lucky Seven). We also had a Chevy Suburban offered (5 digit Squeeze Play) and it was won. One of the showcases offered two hybrid cars - Saturn Hue & Ford Escape. The other showcase offered a Cadillac XLT convertible (which was won). And finally, my favorite pricing game for cash (Punch-a-Bunch) reappeared with a new nighttime amounts (it was also the million-dollar game)
