View Full Version : Ladies, do you have trouble buying bras?

I haven't found a bra that feels comfortable in years. After years of fumbling with none that feel comfortable I had a bra fitting and they still feel tight. Now I wonder if my ribs have changed. Every bra I put on feels as a rope is around my chest. Any suggestions. I am age 50.

:( I know how you feel. The one brand that I found that seems to be more comfortable than any other I have worn is the new line from Queen Latifah. It is called CURVES. It is for larger sized breasts. I don't know if that is the issue with you but that is my problem. Not a problem with my man of course. But with me, it is. You probably need to be measured by a professional in the lingerie department to know exactly what your size/measurements are since over time they do change and any slight weight gain around the rib area can change the bra size.

OMG... YES! I have a VERY hard time finding bras in my size! You see, I'm petite but I'm ridiculously endowed. Last time I measured myself, it came out a 34G (or 34FF, depending on how you want to look at it) and I have days where I could easily be wearing a 34H.

The problem with that for me is they don't carry my size AT ALL in ANY of the stores. So I HAVE to buy them exclusively online. Which just pisses me off more, because online retailers have a thing about not taking back bras if it's obvious that you've tried it on before you returned it to them.

IT IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One day I will make a man wear a bra with really large cups, and stuff the cups with balloons full of flour and make him walk around for 18 hours with it... and he CANNOT take the bra off. I'd hope to make at least one guy have respect for females who are naturally endowed. Believe me, I didn't ask to be THIS endowed.

Coffeecup, it definitely sounds like you were incorrectly fitted. After coming across far too many websites that would give me directions on how to measure myself, but they'd still come out inaccurately, I found this really helpful guide... I am gonna have to search for it and give it to you. It's a better idea, IMO, to measure yourself.

No, not for fitting reasons. I just can't find a style that I think is flattering. I keep getting these ones that squish and flatten. I hate that.

This was the sizing guide I found to be the most accurate for me. Give it a shot. You might be surprised at what you come out with.

Cathy, you must be talking about minimizers. I hate these with a flaming passion! Try a T-shirt bra that with light padding. It gives you support without doing any squishing, and it won't hurt your wallet.

I'll check those out. Not that I need more bras...I already have more than 2 weeks worth.

Most are Target brands. Cherokee and GOM. So they weren't too expensive.

And I spend too much $$ on clothes anyway. I have 3 months worth of winter tops.

I do. I'm (usually) a 34A but sometimes I could easily be a B cup. They swell so much some days for no reason and it's really annoying. However, I find that an underwire with a strechy cup and medium straps usually does the job and even offers a little cleaveage!

Victoria's Secret bras usually run small and I love them for that. <3

...And when I buy panty/bra sets from the BX, the panties are waaaaaay too small. I guess companies figure, small chested, small everywhere else. Not so...

I'd be more than happy to. It's extremely annoying having to wear a fitted top like a button-down in the next size up, thanks to my endowement. (I normally wear a size M in t-shirts but wear size L's for button-downs so they fit fine on top but too big on the bottom. Whatever)

Oh, and I'm trying to pick up a pair of ladies' Hanes undershirts sometime soon. I may not be able to fit in their size XL top, because they say it's designed for a 40" - 42" bust. And, yes, I'm bigger than that. Ugh!

Haha, I have to go the next size up in shirts, too, especially in the short, "baby" kind. I just hate when they go up when I bend down and having to pull up my jeans. My hips are a little on the big side..not fat, just, curvier so I have to wear a mid rise instead of a lower rise.

Wayy off topic, sorry.

If any of you are over a 38 band, hit up Lane Bryant and look at their bras there. They're not ~*~fancy~*~, but their bras are amazing. I used to wear them when I was losing weight and was stuck at a 36/38 band. LB's bras are fabulous!

Victoria's Secret is a joke. For a place that supposedly specializes in lingere, you sure can't find crap there. I'm a D cup (but i dont even look that big at all, people think i'm smaller) and i cant' find a bra there for some reason. I dont know what their idea of a D cup is but i bet you anything their "D" cup is a freakin B cup. They have measured me and everything but their bra's just suck. Even my mom, who wears smaller bras, quit shopping there because their bra's constantly fall apart. What I wish Victoria's secret would do, is carry bra's to fit as many people as they can, from A cups to the largest cup. Plus, its hard to order bra's online, you can't try them on and sometimes you can't return them.

Yeah, avoid VS. They only do 34ABC - 36ABC. You won't find JACK **** there in the way of bras. I love VS, but only for their panties. I think it's hilarious how they pride themselves on being a great lingerie store too... Ha!

Well, it is hard for me because one of my breasts is signifigantly bigger than the other. My perfect fit is a 40B, but many don't or barely carry those. I need the cup and strap support or they're hanging down in Florida or in Manhatten somewhere with which breast your talking about. I like basic black and white, I'm just happy with a good, supportive bra that does it's job.

It is nice to know I am not the only one with bra troubles. In my late teens and into my mid thirties I could wear a 34b. I wore that size for years. Even hung on to some longer years for I would gasp at the newest prices. I'd pay $7-$10.00. Now the cheapest one is $17.00. Since the new ones I buy wouldn't fit, I would have 34.36. and even a 38 sizes with extenders. Last week saw an ad for Lady Grace with 25% off so I said I will get up the nerve and slight embarrisment and ask for a fitting. The 20 something gal measured and said you have a 34c. I said to myself 34. I can't be the same size as 25 years ago. I have flab out a little since then. Too make the long story short she said Oh no anything bigger won't give you support. I said it seems tight. Couldn't I have bigger one with the hooks on the 2nd or 3rd holes. Oh no she said they give as time goes by. I thought til then I be in agony. Right now I have a Cross your heart by somebody a 34c and it not too bad. My mom was heavy chested and she as she got older had a four hooker. One they gave me was a 3 hooker. I am only 5 feet tall so I have a lot of fabric to make the 3 hooks. If anyone has any laughs, giggle all you want.

Yeah its Pink, and i think the Pink is of lesser quality than the actual V's secret ones. But the Pink is my favorite, they are more cute than the Victoria's secret ones, lol.

About your shirt post, i have so many problems with that too. I basically wear my college or sports t-shirts most of the time, i feel most comfortable in them and they fit me perfectly. I gave up on tight shirts from the mall looong ago. I really think if i get my boobs downsized i can wear anything i want. Too bad there's no magic pill, lol, cause i ain't getting no surgery.

Yeah, you'd might want to get yourself measured by professional lingere stores. (i wouldn't do Victoria's Secret because 95% of the time they can't measure and their bra's are mostly made for the less endowed) My mom and grandma went to a pro and they actually got bra's that fit good and were comfortable. You need someone who actually has experience in the business, not some kid who is busy texting on their cell while they measure you. It also helps if the person who assists you has a larger chest as well, they actually understand where you're coming from.

In fairness, you'd be better off going to a department store like JCPenney, Nordstrom or whatever you have in your area. The bra fitters there are way better than the ones at VS.

Just go to the intimates department and tell one of the employees there that you would like to be fitted. :)

They'll measure your ribcage directly below your breasts, and I think also the fullest area of your bust.

All the times I've been measured, I've had to be sans shirt but with a bra on for this. This will ensure the most accurate results. They'll fit you while you're in a fitting room, from my experience. So no other customers will walk by and see you topless but with a bra on.

I've only been fitted completely topless. I hate it. I try to only do it when absolutely necessary. But it does help, and if someone who knows what they are doing is doing it, you will walk out of the store with a bra you like and fits right. For me that's tough because I'm like PZelda. My proper size is in the G/H range, and if I want an exact fit, I need to have it tailored too, which costs an extra $10. That may be what you need to coffeecup, is a little minor tailoring (instead of the 2nd hook thing) to make it fit the most comfortably. I will tell you too though, for me, being "endowed" as PZelda put it, a somewhat tight bra is the right fit. It has to be that way in order to hold everything up, and the newer the bra the tighter it feels. When it isn't so tight anymore and the back strap starts to inch upwards on my back then I know it's time for a new bra. It may just feel tight to you because you haven't been having the right support before? It seems like a lot of women don't wear their bras correctly and could use the strap adjustment as well as a cup adjustment. No matter how old you are, if your bra doesn't make you look "perky" then you are wearing it too loose. If you can pull on the straps at all and pull everything upwards, it's too loose too. If you do pull upwards on the straps and you find yourself coming out on the top or the sides at all, then you need a bigger cup size. The right bra should firmly hold you up and you shouldn't have any part of your breast coming out of the top or sides.
And I wish I had two weeks worth of bras too...I could never afford it though...mine generally cost around $70 a pop after it's all said and done because my size is only sold at specialty lingerie stores.

and then i asked three more people to measure me, just to be sure. and those were done in the privacy of the dressing room.

You're funny. I think you may have a point. Have a gal your size measure you. I probably had a somewhat flatter chested gal measure me. She said she worked at Macys in their underwear dept so I felt she had some experience. I may have had better luck with the older woman. I alway think of Victoria's Secrets as place to buy your underwear if you are going on your honeymoon. I am not trying to sex up my love life. I just want a bra that feels comfortabel
Posters I want to say I have enjoyed your posts. I even laughed at some. Made my bras feels not to tight when I giggled. thank you!!!

Oh man, when I was starting to develop, I remember going to JCPenneys. My sister took me and this lady was measuring me on the floor. Not out where customers were at, but near the racks of bras for teens. I was sooooooo embarrassed.
AAAHHH. That's horrifying. Especially for an adolescent.

but i agree with everyone. vs is definitely better in the underwear department. though they are expensive, i always wait for the semi-annual sale & stock up. lol.

Well, I measured myself a few days ago and it turns out I'm a 34B and not a 34A.
I bought new bras today and they fit HEAVENLY. :D
