View Full Version : SO Interview [pt 2]: Mikado (Week 6)
swedeace 02-19-2008, 01:45 AM Mikey's name is one of two names picked for the SO Interview of the Week!!
Ask Mikey anything. And away we go....
My questions:
1. What is the story behind your SO username?
2. Have you ever been to the U.S.? If so, where?
Ireneparalegal 02-19-2008, 01:50 AM :cheer:
Mind you Mikey, I know most of the answers to the questions I will ask, but I ask so that others can know you better too :D
Where in the world would you love to travel if money were no object?
Outside of where you live, where else does architecture fascinate you? What buildings or bridges do you find extraordinary?
Tell us abt the pets you have had.
What 5 U.S. cities would you love to visit?
What things cause you fear?
Mikado 02-19-2008, 01:56 AM :woohoo: My turn :D
Swedeace
1. What is the story behind your SO username?
Well, its a name I picked up as my "anime" name years ago, long before I was ever online. My name is Michel so, i wanted a Japanese name similar to that, so, i chose Mikado....it's also the name given to the powerful silk trains of the 1930s and steam trains are another passion of mine.
2. Have you ever been to the U.S.? If so, where?
Only just across the border in Buffalo for a few hockey games and Lewiston NY to see Fort Niagara, and that's the only times I've ever been out of Canada
Mikado 02-19-2008, 02:22 AM Ireneparalegal
Where in the world would you love to travel if money were no object?Well, first Id see the rest of Canada, (Ive never been west) by domed train , then maybe visit a few select spots in USA then id go Asia , especially Japan and China (The great wall must be something to see) and maybe France (only cause most of my ancestors came from there), mind you, i havent much interest in Europe
Outside of where you live, where else does architecture fascinate you? What buildings or bridges do you find extraordinary?
I find pretty much any large bridge fascinating but especially large bridges that open for boat traffic , mind you the small stone bridges in Europe and wood bridges in Japan are very picturesque also. I think the Brooklyn is probably the most picturesque bridge, but, I have no interest in seeing it live.
As for buildings, I tend to enjoy pioneer buildings and 19th Cent industrial architecture such as old mills and factory ruins....also, I love Gingerbread Victorians!
Tell us abt the pets you have had.
Well, 4 budgies, several quick-dying goldfish  and 3 dogs (The first thought she was a cat; the second was a fine watchdog and the last was a lap dog, who hated laps and prefered to perch on my shoulders :D)
What 5 U.S. cities would you love to visit?Hmm well, Id love to see the Henry Ford Museum at Dearborn, The Smithsonian in Wash , LA..cause I know a few people there ;) maybe see the BIG antique car show in Hershey Penn (not too far from here) and for the fifth, well, anywhere on the Erie Canal (Which I'd love to travel on for a week)
What things cause you fear?Besides women? Well, basically I fear big cities with their gangs and crime.....i could never live in a big city; I fear (and hate) politicians who think war is a solution

What is your Favorite childhood memory?
Strangely the best day in my childhood that I can recall was my first trip to the city dump! Me and my friend Jackie (Who was a girl my own age , who lived next door at the time) found a bunch of refridgerator crates and spent the next 20 or 30 mins running in and out of them, playing a kind of tag/hide and seek; sounds weird now but, when I was 4 a giant box held many secrets and wonders
Favorite color?
RED
Favorite episode from Corner Gas?
The Tax Man, second ep from season 1- This ep was actually the first show of the series that they ever filmed, and still the one that makes me laugh loudest! (Although, the first 2 shows of season 5 give it real competition)
Mikado 02-19-2008, 07:16 PM How did ya find SO?
I was looking for info about WHY Dick York was replaced on Bewitched and the Which Darrin do you prefer thread came up on Google, so, I opened the page and joined a few days later, originally intending only to give my view on THAT question (I'm a Dick York fan); never expecting to have almost 20,000 posts here since
How did ya find out about Shonen Knife?
As an anime fan, I'd heard of Shonen Knife about 5 years before I'd ever heard one of their albums, and didnt really have any interest in them until one day, MuchMusic (Canadian version of MTV) played one of their videos (Riding on the Rocket)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSqGtOj72Q4
as almost a joke.....I was blown away, 3 tiny punk J-girls playing hard and fast, so , i bought the CD with that song on it (Let's Knife); just to see if that one song was a fluke, and was HOOKED....I now have easily the largest collection of their music in the Niagara Area
Do they really have a song called Flying Jelly Attack and what were they on?Yes, flying Jelly Attack is about the girls having a food fight, one of them throwing jelly beans and the other throwing cherry drops (cherry hard candy) SK is well known for their "food songs" among other things and this is probably their funniest food song, but, it has a great beat!
They were probably on a diet at the time! ;)

Mikado 02-19-2008, 07:26 PM What is your favorite US cartoon?
All-time, probably the amazing 1940s Superman cartoons by the Fleischer brothers / currently, I find King of the Hill to be "Top of the Heap"
What city would you love to travel to? (Spare no expense)Osaka Japan, home to an online friend and also to the Osaka girl-punk sound.......led by Shonen Knife, of course
Hi Mikey:wave:
Does your family "get" your sense of humor?
Have you ever wanted to publish your pictures & drawings in a book?
And if you could have been on any 3 tv shows, which 3 would you have picked?
RoryGilmore 02-19-2008, 07:48 PM Hey Mikey!
I just got one for ya
What are your hobbies?
Mikado 02-19-2008, 09:03 PM annball1957Hi Mikey:wave: Hi
Does your family "get" your sense of humor?
I'd have to say my family doesnt "get" me at ALL, and that includes my sense of humour.....i'm basically influenced by MAD Magazine (in my look at humour) and the 60s message of free spirits, experiencing life moments, as opposed to living to work, til you drop. (I think my sense of humour reflects that)
Have you ever wanted to publish your pictures & drawings in a book?I'm torn, as much as i love to share these things, publishing them would make them a job, and worse, they would be perused by the media critics; I'm not the sort who takes that kind of thing well, I need ENcouragement, not DIScouragement.
And if you could have been on any 3 tv shows, which 3 would you have picked?
Well, I dont see TV as real but, hmmmmmm........ Corner Gas might be a real blast cause its Canadian, funny, and, I happen to resemble the star just a bit and could see myself playing a distant cousin, or something.
M*A*S*H.....politically, the message this show had is VERY similar to my own views; as long as I didnt have to do any scenes in the OR...even fake blood makes me queasy!
Lost In Space-the only Sci-fi show I ever liked, how could any kid* not love Robot B-9?
*I mean, I was a kid when the show ran
Mikado 02-19-2008, 09:12 PM Hey Mikey!
I just got one for ya
What are your hobbies?
Well, I love to draw and paint, do a little writing (mostly comedy), spend time on SO (and other places online) , take pictures of 19th cent industrial architechture (incl the old Welland Canals), "ghosttowning" (Finding and recording defunct communities), doing picture puzzles,
taking long walks and collecting things (Asian art, toys and old local postcards). There was a time when i played hockey up to 5 times a week, but, darn it, when you hit 40, it just becomes too difficult. :(
Ireneparalegal 02-19-2008, 10:00 PM Is hockey the number one sport in Canada? Where does Curling rank?
Have you ever played Curling?
What sports (other than Hockey and Curling) would you love to see the Corner Gas cast play?
How did you learn to cook?
Mikado 02-19-2008, 10:27 PM What is your Favorite childhood memory?
Strangely the best day in my childhood that I can recall was my first trip to the city dump! Me and my friend Jackie (Who was a girl my own age , who lived next door at the time) found a bunch of refridgerator crates and spent the next 20 or 30 mins running in and out of them.....
And heres the proof, Dad apparently brought the camera that day, and here's Jackie and I playing in one of the refridgerator crates that day :D
Mikado 02-19-2008, 10:46 PM Is hockey the number one sport in Canada? Where does Curling rank?
No doubt about it, hockey is Canada's #1 favorite sport (although Lacrosse is our OFFICIAL "national sport"), they say there's more hockey arenas in Ontario than in all of Europe put together (and Europeans also love hockey); most kids here learn to ice skate as soon as they can walk.(In winter, when Americans are watching basketball on TV, it barely makes any ratings here)
Curling is probably Canada's 3rd most watched sport (after hockey and football) and second most played (after hockey)...most towns in Canada have either a curling rink next door to the hockey arena (they share ice making machines) or the rinks have the markings for both sports on the SAME ice surface, in the smaller towns. (Personally, I hate curling but, my parents and brother love it)
Have you ever played Curling? No, can't stand it, too slow for my taste (same goes for football)
What sports (other than Hockey and Curling) would you love to see the Corner Gas cast play?
Well, i'm not much of a sports fan but, perhaps the girls could play tennis in those short outfits...."Hey Lacey, want to pick up that ball by the net, please?"
How did you learn to cook? Well, Mom gave me a few basics but, mainly, i had to learn to cook or starve, and frankly, while "Mac & Cheese" (or KD as its called here) may be fine for some bachelors, I like to eat REAL food, so, I kept at it, and after 3 years, learned the secret of timing. Since then, i have the confidence to keep experimenting with new flavours and ideas. (I also watch "Restaurant Makeover" fairly regularly and get ideas from there, too)
Mikado 02-20-2008, 01:04 AM anyone else? 0.o

Nighthawk76 02-20-2008, 02:17 PM Okay, I think I have a question for you, Mikey. As someone who is Canadian and knows their history and politics, what is your opinion of America during the new millennium. Also ,what is your opinion on President Bush?
waichingliu81 02-20-2008, 02:43 PM if you could reccomend to me 3 places to visit within your hometown, where would they be and why those places in particular?
are you more of a sweet or savory person when it comes to food?
if you could invite 5 celebrities to dinner, who would you choose and why them?
who are your favourite 3 canadians of all-time- be it celebrities, politicians, whoever?
Did you like school? And what was your favorite & least favorite thing about school?
vtunie 02-20-2008, 08:22 PM On balance, would you rather be watching TV or not?
Mikado 02-20-2008, 09:17 PM Okay, I think I have a question for you, Mikey. As someone who is Canadian and knows their history and politics, what is your opinion of America during the new millennium. Also ,what is your opinion on President Bush?
Well, at the risk of ruffling a few feathers I'll try to be honest but fair...
My opinion of the USA is that its a country that sincerly wants to do good, but, lets its "self-interests" get in the way sometimes, making their good intentions backfire. I personally love Americans (as people), just not their gvmt or foreign policy.
Bush is a terrible president, I could explain why but, for reasons of my own, I have more or less decided not to be too political in SO. (If you want to know more Mike, just pm me ;) )
LuLu Rogers 02-20-2008, 09:31 PM What is your all time favorite episode of M*A*S*H?
Who is your favorite M*A*S*H Character?
Who is your favorite actor/actress?
Mikado 02-20-2008, 09:38 PM if you could reccomend to me 3 places to visit within your hometown, where would they be and why those places in particular?Hmm, The thing with Welland is we are surrounded by places much more in the "tourist" vein than anything here in town (Such as Niagara Falls, several forts and 2 great lakes), but, if I had to show the city itself, the best place to start would be downtown by the library, where you have the old channel of the canal, Welland river, the 150 year old stonecut aqueduct, the 1856 courthouse, and of course the bridge in my avatar, then, id take you down the street a few miles to the new canal channel (incl the large traffic tunnel under the canal) and finally, wed go west to the Seaway Mall for an A&W root Beer
are you more of a sweet or savory person when it comes to food?I'm not really sure what savory means , pertaining to food, but, I dont have much of a sweet tooth, so i'll go with that :D
if you could invite 5 celebrities to dinner, who would you choose and why them?I'm not really into celebs.....Maybe Brent Butt and Gabrielle Miller cause I love the show, other than that, I cant really think of anyone
who are your favourite 3 canadians of all-time- be it celebrities, politicians, whoever?
#1 William H Merritt (1793-1862)-War hero (1812 war) and the man who promoted and built the first 2 Welland Canals , Canada's first international train bridge and promoted other canal and railway projects in the 1800s; who sadly, is virtually unknown in the rest of Canada despite being the Father of Canadian transportation.
#2 Pierre Elliot Trudeau (1919-2000)- Former Canadian Prime Minister and my political mentor in many ways
#3 Pierre Berton (1920-2004)- Canadian TV/radio personality, storyteller and Canada's foremost "popular" historian. His books such as The last Spike (About the Canadian Pacific RR) & Flames Across the Border (War of 1812) were as exciting to read as any novel and more so, because they were all true; he was my favorite author and It saddens me that his pen is forever stilled
Mikado 02-20-2008, 09:42 PM Did you like school? And what was your favorite & least favorite thing about school?
I loved elementary school but, i am math dyslexic* and the more i needed math skills (for science, for examp), the harder it became for me. I also had a hard time in social situations; i think id have done better, had i been home schooled. I loved history, and languages (we had both French and English lessons) and hated math with a passion!

Mikado 02-20-2008, 09:48 PM On balance, would you rather be watching TV or not?
Only if theres a good hockey game, documentary or Corner Gas is on!
Mikado 02-20-2008, 09:55 PM What is your all time favorite episode of M*A*S*H? Hmmm, thats like asking whos my favorite child..... if I HAD to pick one, perhaps the ep where Hawkeye wants a new set of boots, sets up a trading chain and it all falls apart
Who is your favorite M*A*S*H Character?
Hawkeye, obviously, he is SO "ME" (well, the TV version at least); other than the way he treats women like toys, THAT i dont approve of at ALL (Nor does Alan Alda, in real life)
Who is your favorite actor/actress?]
Actor: all-time- Humphrey Bogart / present- Tom Hanks
Actress: all-time- Judy Garland/ present- Gabrielle Miller
Silent film: Harold Lloyd
LuLu Rogers 02-20-2008, 10:07 PM Hmmm, thats like asking whos my favorite child..... if I HAD to pick one, perhaps the ep where Hawkeye wants a new set of boots, sets up a trading chain and it all falls apart
"For Want Of A Boot" is a great ep :)
Mikado 02-21-2008, 03:00 AM Yup, it was between that one and the one where Hawk gets a "Moose" (Short for Musume...Japanese for girl or daughter) played by the adorably succulent Virginia Lee "Yes, I am very beautiful!"
LuLu Rogers 02-21-2008, 09:54 AM Yup, it was between that one and the one where Hawk gets a "Moose" (Short for Musume...Japanese for girl or daughter) played by the adorably succulent Virginia Lee "Yes, I am very beautiful!"
Yes, "The Moose" is another great ep!
