Because you have the popular girls or boys getting Valentine's and then the unpopular boys and girls getting NOTHING and that it can be a very painful for a young boy or girl in middle school or highschool.

I know because I was one of them-lol VD waa so depressing to me in highschool and I can't believe they used to have a VD dance which was even worst.

Valentine's day sucks. None of us should acknowledge it. It' makes corporations rich while taking advantage of love and making those of us who have no one feel like ****.

I don't support a holiday like that. And I'm not looking forward to going into work on Valentine's day. The crowds are going to be atrocious. All I've got to say is we'd better get a bonus this month...

i think valentines day is probably one of the most pointless events in the calendar. why choose one day telling someone you love them and give them candy, flowers etc, when you can do this any time of the day. its all a money making scam. and unlike xmas for instance, it cannot be regarded as an actual tradition

my high school had a service that let you buy a decorated valentine's cookie for someone else in the school that would be delivered to them in class on valentine's day. i think something like that is as far as a school should go. i was bitter about it only last year, but just in the days preceding it because my best friend / ex / guy i liked (yeah all the same person) got me a teddy bear and a rose on his own time, so i was happy and unbitter about the holiday for the rest of the year.

So because some people don't have a relationship going on at a particular time, everyone else should feel sorry for them and not celebrate a romantic holiday with their special someone? That makes no sense at all.

You want a bad school V-day story? At my dump high school, the poetry club would order 50 million carnations and you can send one to either your friend or love interest or sex buddy, what-have-you. Well, I'm in the 10th grade and an I guess you can say "friend" decided to order some for her friends. Now keep in mind I ate lunch with her and hung out a couple of times after school. Well, she orders them and never states my name, but I thought she just wanted mine to be a suprise. Long story short I never got one and the friendship never lasted after sophmore year but it wasn't over a stupid flower.

I got the topic of your thread Solomon. But you know it will take a slight turn regarding the whole day of Valentines.

Anyhoo, back in the days, my school gave a list to each of the kids and we were to give EVRYONE a valentine.

As a matter of fact, my son will be giving out V.Cards to his classmates and the teacher gave us a list of each kid and emphasizing the importance of each child receiving one. It's common sense to me that you would not allow your child to give out V.Cards if you allow your child to omit anyone from their class. If the teachers enforce this early enough (pre-K, Kindergarten) there shouldn't be an issue.

I cannot believe any teacher would allow kids to give out cards and not include every kid in the class.

High schools??? I never gave out V.Cards in highschool. I never knew anyone in highschool who ever did that. I know we had the Booster Club sell carnations so people can send one to a friend or boyfriend/girlfriend or secret admirerer, but there was never exchanging of cards in highschool.

There were dances but if you didn't want to go to the dance, you didn't go. To me, they were no different than any other school dance.

Is it more unpopular kids than regular everyday and popular kids? I never understood why the few that are the most unhappy seem to want to set the rules for everyone else.

I understand where you are coming from but just because you weren't happy about Valentines day shouldn't be a reason to make everyone else have to stop it.

I can't remember if they were or weren't. To me if I had a girlfriend at the time I would celebrate it because women enjoy it. If I didn't have a girlfriend then I wouldn't let me effect me to the point that I think no one should enjoy it. More things in life to worry about I guess.

I have to agree with Augustus on this one.
You're encroaching on PC territory, King. The "oh, we better not do this(like give awards, recognize a specific holiday, etc), because someone might feel left out" bs.
Well, you know what? This isn't a perfect world, and yes, people are going to have their feelings hurt at times. It happens to everyone. By taking away everything that "might" upset someone, you take away any chance to have fun, to live, and to grow.

And no, I didn't have great Valentines days in school. Hated the holiday, in fact. But I wouldn't deny it for anyone else simply because I - could have been considered - a geek.:D

When we had Valentine Day's parties in school, we had to give everyone in class a Valentine's card. I remember writing them out the night before with my mother. The class would be decorated with red cut-out hearts strung along the wall and red and white balloons. There would be cupcakes with red heart decorations. It was fun. Nobody felt left out.

If it is any consolation Solomon, I married my first husband ON VALENTINE'S DAY!!! When we separated and divorced, I had to put those thoughts aside and tell myself there will be more V.Days to celebrate and enjoy, whether it means being at home alone with the television or making it special by buying my daughters candy and a card. You don't have to have a sweetheart to share this day with, you have a mom. I don't have a mom, but you do. You can do something special with her or for her. V-Day is what you make of it. ;)

The biggest reason I celebrate Valentines day is it just happens to fall on our anniversary. Before though, i was indifferent about it, because i thought everyone was so stupid for actually falling for the money-making scams from jewelery stores and other money-hungry corporations. But when you are dating someone, it can be a nice holiday. If you are single, you can always use V-day as an excuse to ask someone you like out.

People always say "you're supposed to show your love and affection every day out of the year not just V-day" but its a dumb way to think because I'm sure to buy someone a gift and go on a romantic date is pretty hard to do everyday of the year.

In my elementary school, we had to give Valentine's to everyone in the class. This thread reminds me of The Simpson's episode where Ralph had a crush on Lisa because she was the only one who gave him one.

But back to High school Valentine, I was in the same boat with you Solomon. It's hard when you don't have anyone romantically to appreciate the day with. Sorry if my last post was off topic but I wanted you to feel better!!!

I kind of agree. Some schools, including mine, does a thing called a "Candy Gram" and basicly it's a sucker taped to a peice of paper that someone sends you, it's like a valentine. And although I don't get many, it's a great fundraiser for the clubs who sponsor it, because you always have the super popular girls who buy 47365937583 for their friends and spend their whole paycheck on some ****ing cheap candy.
