Here's a "novel" way to gauge a U.S. city's level of passion: With Valentine's Day coming up, Amazon.com compiled its list of the Most Romantic Cities in America, based on per capita sales of romance novels and relationship and sex books since the start of 2008.

New York, by the way, didn't even crack the top 20 (out of 236 cities surveyed), while Salt Lake City was the place least interested in matters of the heart - its citizens bought the fewest love-themed tomes.

1. Alexandria, Va.

2. Cambridge, Mass.

3. Miami, Fla.

4. Irvine, Calif.

5. Ann Arbor, Mich.

6. Orlando, Fla.

7. Berkeley, Calif.

8. Scottsdale, Ariz.

9. Arlington, Va.

10. Atlanta, Ga.

Living in Orlando, FL I can 100% guarantee there is nothing romantic about it! Unless theme parks turn you on.

They always say Paris is a romantic place to go. My mom said it's really gross over there, and FAR from romantic. She said she stepped off the train there and saw some guy peeing right next to her. I've also heard comments about Paris from a few friends and cousins too.

Paris is awesome!! I've been there twice and I'd go back in a heartbeat, if I had the money. You can see a guy peeing anywhere, and believe me, I've seen more than I want to in many of the cities of the U.S.!!

Ain't that the truth!! I live in E.Central Fla(not Bithlo!lol), and I, too, see nothing romantic about this area, as much as I do love living here.

See, if that's the people who read the most about it, doesn't that make those the top ten least romantic cities? I think New York city would be the top of my list...I guess it's all in how you define romantic. But you can't beat the aura and heartbeat of that city...the theatres, the restaurants, the hotels, the lights... they don't need to read about it because it's all right there.

OH Nuts!

Yeah, New York has lots of great romantic stuff, and there are lots of romantic fun places in Brooklyn & Queens where its not a crowded.

Brooklyn and Queens...romantic?!?

Yeah, there's lots of cute places. I never would have thought it until I started exploring the boroughs. For example, there's a great ice cream shop in Forest Hills where they make their own ice cream--it's a great place to take someone. Some nice restaurants in Park Slope.

New York's so big...so many nooks and crannies...esp. in the boroughs

But, any city can be romantic...when you're with that someone special!

No surprise Seattle isn't on the list.

No surprise about Salt Lake City, either.

That list tells me more that those cities are full of dreamers and people who need help...not romantic people.

My dad was there during the Vietnam War and he said it was the dirtiest city in Europe.

Besides, why do they even make this list? Just like the lists they make like "50 sexiest women ever". These are just opinions, sooo stupid. Someone may think a Port-a-Potty is romantic. Apparently, the people who make this list make them on their own, instead of going out into the public and asking people their opinions.

Hi June.

I agree with you. ANY city can be romantic-most have a charming spot or two--and WHAT really makes a setting romantic is being with someone special

I didn't find the city romantic this summer.

I don't think romance is in my town. (Maybe that's why I can't get a girl.):(

Irvine?

What's so romantic about contemporary, upper-middle class suburbia. Seriously... if it wasn't for UC Irvine, the city would have been one of the most boring places in California.

It is quite dirty. But there are still some really neat places.

Paris is beautiful, but it is not the most beautiful city in Europe, though..

A little off-topic, but what do you think the most beautiful city in Europe is?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Paris is one of the best, but you can find beauty in every city. Rome, Barcelona, Munich, Athens, St. Petersburg, etc. are just as beautiful and world class.

 plus, all of the houses look EXACTLY alike. it's worse than the san fernando valley. everything is identical and suuuper expensive. lol.

I thought Geneva was really beautiful:)

Gotcha. I just wanted to know for future reference because I want to go back to Europe sometime in the next few years. I thought Lucerne was beautiful but in Zurich there was alot of paper trash blowing around the streets. It was a little breezy that day.

Funny how this thread was about US cities but some of us are talking about European cities!

Exactly, where is La Jolla, one of the most romantic and one of the most beautiful cities in the country?
it is near to where i live, well sort of.. maybe a half an hour north east.

and by the way la jolla sucks for independence day. i went there to the beach to watch the fireworks with my friend but the show sucked, lasted like 10 minutes, and we only saw like 2 minutes of fireworks cuz the smoke from the cheap ass fireworks blocked the rest of em
