Will TVland ever air any rare/obscure series again? They used have to those cool christmas marathons with one or two episodes of a rare show, or good old "fanhours" where the winner of the tvland contest thing would pick shows from the tvland vault...

Does anyone think any obscure stuff will air anymore? I personally feel probably not anytime soon. :(

Stick a fork in TVLand they are done. I find it a strange coincidence that TVL started going downhill as soon as the TV DVDs started to appear 2004/5

here we go again with another thread bashing TV LAND!

Unfortunately; they won't air any rare and obscure shows again; ever.:( I haven't heard that but I'm positive they won't.

They have these young people running things now, who care little or nothing about classic TV. Which accounts for all their crap.

Were the ratings just terrible on alot of the "lesser aired" things or what? How did the ratings for that "Kitschen" hour or whatever do? With reruns of Tabitha and such.

I thought the Kitschen was one of the better things TVL used to do. My favorite line-up was Superman-Batman-Shazam. Fun shows to watch from Midnight to 2pm on the weekends.

Yeah I remember the Kitschen, I used to watch on Saturday Nights when they aired Welcome Back Kotter in 2002

I loved the Kitschen SO much. It was my weekly ritual to watch "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" on Friday and Saturday nights, among the other goodies that would pop up. The Kitschen died when they decided to make it all Sid and Marty Krofft shows. I didn't have a problem with those shows, I just thought it was overkill to have the full two hours be them.

TVLand used to have all types of special blocks on a regular basis to showcase shows not on the channel. Box Sets were awesome, as was Sunday Best. By the time I got TVLand, the Ultimate Fan Hour was gone, but I caught it once at a friend's house in 2000 and it was great. The Kitschen and Better Living Through Television were awesome ways to showcase rarely seen shows as well. I loved waking up to "Hazel," "Father Knows Best," and all the others.

So I would say TV Land jumped the shark after 2002

JT

Pretty much. And around the same time, when it was all still good, sometimes if a show did well on a special airing, it'd find its way on the regular schedule. That's exactly what happened with "Archie Bunker's Place," I believe. They aired it Box Sets every now and then, and then next thing you know, they started airing it in AITF's place on weekends. I believe it even ended up on the weekday schedule at one point. The same thing happened with the Krofft shows...they only did a special marathon of them once, but then they joined the regular sked as part of the Kitschen.

Hell, I believe that could have been the reason why shows like "Father Knows Best" and "Donna Reed" and "Hazel" and all then joined in June 2002. They frequently aired in Christmas marathons and other special one-off things and probably did well, hence why Donna got a weekday run in the Twice as Nice block.

DAMN, I miss those days. Back when Lucy and Beaver weren't the only all-B/W shows that aired during the week at good timeslots.

I guess if ratings on most of their other shows were not good its understandable they would try to do something new..and I don't mind talkshows/documentary type series about classic tv, but extreme makeover series what the heck!?.

Maybe if they got some more 80's series like Perfect Strangers, Punky Brewster, etc ratings would do better.

It was said that Extreme Makeover has generated good ratings. Also Punky Brewster is more of a N@N show not TV Land

that's not what I read on the message boards on amazon.com

A poster ther who used to work for TV LAND says that they have a lot of young people running things now; and they care little or nothing about classic TV-and that's why she quit.
However, you can complain to and about them, because, belive it or not, they DO read all the complaints and raving about them on here, and other sites. And every once in a while they do something about it. The fact that they've brought back "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES" is proof of that. Unfortunately though, I highly doubt they'll drop the "split screen" at the end, stop cutting up their shows, etc.

It was stated by the TV land rep that BABY BOOMERS make programming decisions at TV land

I don't know if I believe that it's all run by younger people who don't care about preserving classic television history. Like Solomon said, TVLand is having this thing for Baby Boomers and they've been having it for a while now. The boomer generation is generally considered those born in the years 1946 through 1964, so it really does cover a lot. But Pav has also said in the past that it's more of what boomers watch as opposed to what they used to watch, hence the pick-up of "Just Shoot Me!" (though I don't see the connection there; I always thought JSM! was geared towards the Gen X crowd).

It's hard to understand what they're doing. They're having this incredibly huge hard-on for the 80s, it seems. This "High School Reunion" thing seems to deal with a lot of the 80s movie/TV archetypes. Most of the movies they pick for the MovieLand thing are 80s movies, hence the 80s Weekend thing. Their little Pop Quiz things deal mainly with 80s-themed trivia, too, it seems.

The even odder thing is...you look solely at their roster of reruns, and it doesn't seem at all so recent. Just to show it, I'll go back in time and get a TVLand show list from the past (circa 2001-2002) and compare to the current list of shows.

I wish they'd have used this to their advantage more, I mean there plenty of sitcoms and dramas that could have aired during that weekend marathon, instead of relying on movies which don't belong on the channel and can probably be found less cut up and edited on other more apporpriate networks.

I also wish they'd focus more on '50's-70's as well as '80's shows, it can be done. There are shows from all 4 decades that should see the light of day and aren't. I wish networks would pick a vision and a purpose, ONE purpose and stick with it.

Yeah, just do a search for a month and year, making sure you put TVLand in there too. The TVLand June 2002 schedule is one of the easier ones to find, and it was by far one of my favorite TV Land schedules, so I'll post a complete list of shows that aired regularly. To emphasize the diversity of genres and time periods, the running years and genre of each show is in parentheses.

1. "Adventures of Superman" (1952-1958, action/adventure)
2. "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960-1968, sitcom)*
3. "Batman" (1966-1968, action/adventure)
4. "Barney Miller" (1975-1982, sitcom)
5. "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962-1971, sitcom)*
6. "The Brady Bunch" (1969-1974, sitcom)*
7. "Charlie's Angels" (1976-1981, detective)
8. "Dennis the Menace" (1959-1963, sitcom)
9. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961-1966, sitcom)
10. "The Donna Reed Show" (1958-1966, sitcom)
11. "Father Knows Best" (1954-1960, sitcom)
12. "Fernwood 2Night" (1977-1978, sitcom)
13. "The Flying Nun" (1967-1970, sitcom)
14. "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" (1950-1958, sitcom)
15. "Get Smart" (1965-1970, sitcom)
16. "Gidget" (1965-1966, sitcom)
17. "Gilligan's Island" (1964-1967, sitcom)
18. "Gunsmoke" (1955-1975, western)*
19. "Happy Days" (1974-1984, sitcom)
20. "Hazel" (1961-1966, sitcom)
21. "The Honeymooners" (1955-1956, sitcom)
22. "I Love Lucy" (1951-1957, sitcom)*
23. "The Jeffersons" (1975-1985, sitcom)*
24. "Leave It to Beaver" (1957-1963, sitcom)*
25. "The Love Boat" (1977-1986, comedy/drama)
26. "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" (1957-1960, sitcom)
27. "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" (1976-1977, comedy/drama)
28. "Mary Tyler Moore" (1970-1977, sitcom)
29. "The Monkees" (1966-1968, sitcom)
30. "The Munsters" (1964-1966, sitcom)*
31. "The Rockford Files" (1974-1980, detective)
32. "The Rookies" (1972-1976, detective)
33. "Taxi" (1978-1983, sitcom)
34. "The Waltons" (1972-1981, family drama)

The shows with stars are the ones that are still on TVLand, whether they left then came back or they just never left.

Now, looking at the list, 25 of the 34 shows were straight-forward sitcoms. Two of them were mainly comedy shows with dramatic overtones. Three were detective/crime dramas, two were action/adventure shows based on superheroes, one as a western, and the other was a family drama. IMHO, there's such a thing as too many sitcoms, and 25/34 is definitely it. Of course, I love most of the shows that were on there, but I think six could have been sacrificed for a medical drama (like "Marcus Welby"), an older crime drama (something like "Hawaiian Eye"), and a nighttime soap (like "Falcon Crest").

As far as time periods go, ten of the shows debuted in the 1950s (but only the 1966-1975 episodes of "Gunsmoke" were shown), twelve of the shows debuted in the 1960s, and twelve of the shows debuted in the 1970s. The oldest show was "Burns and Allen" from 1950, and the most recent was "Love Boat" from 1986, but TVLand only aired episodes from 1977-1982. I think it's a pretty interesting mix...not many sitcoms from the late 70s on the list, but tons from the 1960s.

Okay, and now, here is the current list of shows on TVLand. I only included the reruns, so no originals or movies are on the list.

1. "The Addams Family" (1964-1966, sitcom)
2. "The Andy Griffith Show" (1960-1968, sitcom)
3. "Bonanza" (1959-1973, western)
4. "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962-1971, sitcom)
5. "The Brady Bunch" (1969-1974, sitcom)
6. "Cheers" (1982-1993, sitcom)
7. "Designing Women" (1986-1993, sitcom)
8. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (2003-present, reality/home improvement)
9. "Good Times" (1974-1979, sitcom)
10. "Green Acres" (1965-1971, sitcom)
11. "Gunsmoke" (1955-1975, western)
12. "I Love Lucy" (1951-1957, sitcom)
13. "The Jeffersons" (1975-1985, sitcom)
14. "Just Shoot Me!" (1997-2003, sitcom)
15. "Leave It to Beaver" (1957-1963, sitcom)
16. "M*A*S*H" (1972-1983, sitcom)
17. "The Munsters" (1964-1966, sitcom)
18. "Night Court" (1984-1992, sitcom)
19. "Sanford & Son" (1972-1977, sitcom)
20. "Star Trek" (1966-1969, science fiction)
21. "Three's Company" (1977-1984, sitcom)
22. "Wings" (1990-1997, sitcom)

So, we have twelve less shows now than there were in June 2002, and all but four are sitcoms. One's a science fiction show, two are westerns, and the other is a....reality show. Four of the shows began in the 1950s ("Gunsmoke" still only airs 1966-1975 episodes, however), 7 began in the 1960s, 5 began in the 1970s, 3 began in the 1980s, 2 began in the 1990s and 1 began in the 2000s. TV Land was great in the mid-90s. That was when they aired episodes of series like Judd for the Defense, Nero Wolfe, Coronet Blue, Longstreet, Young Lawyers, Bold Ones, Outsider, Mr. Terrific, Joey Bishop Show, Petrocelli and dozens of other rarities. Unfortunately once they got into most cable homes, all of the uncommon shows were axed, they started cutting to 22 minutes a show, etc. They were great but only for the first couple of years. Now, they could fold for all I care. Haven't checked their schedule in 10 years.
