View Full Version : What Was Your Favorite Celebrity Guest Appearance On I Love Lucy?
JamesG 02-07-2008, 02:27 AM My answer might be a bit bias since I am also a huge SUPERMAN fan but the episode where George Reeves appears as SUPERMAN for Little Ricky's party. I also loved the scene where Lucy dresses up as SUPERMAN and goes on the landing when the "real" SUPERMAN saves her.
So, what was your favorite guest appearance on ILL?
*ClassicPinUp* 02-07-2008, 03:33 AM There's a few but John Wayne and Harpo Marx come to mind first. I thought they were hilarious!
Mikado 02-07-2008, 04:56 AM HARRRRRRRRD Q...i'll say Tennesee Ernie Ford as "Cousin" Ernie
comedyfreak 02-07-2008, 05:35 AM Harpo Marx, Bob Hope, and George "Superman" Reeves.
*ClassicPinUp* 02-07-2008, 06:14 AM Harpo Marx, Bob Hope, and George "Superman" Reeves.
Whoa, can't believe I forgot about Bob Hope! LOVE him! That episode is one of my favorites. :)
TURBOCSX 02-07-2008, 08:22 AM i liked the John Wayne episodes where lucy wants to get his cement imprints.
tv star collector 02-07-2008, 08:50 AM I would have to say "Lucy and Superman." I especially liked George Reeves'
last line (to Desi): "Wait a minute! Do you mean to tell me that you've been
married to this woman for fifteen years?! And they call ME Superman!"
SPLAIN 02-07-2008, 10:30 AM Some were a riot, like Bill Holden nose on fire, Tennesse Ernie's three, John Wayne's two, Bob Hope's, Cornel, Harpo, but definitely not Rock Hudson's. Widmark's not so much either.
drewfussclass101 02-07-2008, 12:25 PM Seeing as how The Ricardos go to japan is one of my fav. episodes i would have to say bob cummings. But i do think tallulah bankhead was funny in the celeb. next door and Ida Lupino and Howard Duff were funny in lucys summer vacation.
SPLAIN 02-07-2008, 02:58 PM Ok, the hours, well, Tallulah and Thomas were the very best, the worst was summer vacation with Lupino and Duff, Lucy had some great moments with Skelton and even Paul Douglas. Frenando not so much for me, Cummings was great, Kovacks wasted, Betty Grable and James were a hoot. Berle was ok, Sothern and Romero and Valle very good.
Benno123 02-07-2008, 05:50 PM Tallulah Bankhead and Danny Thomas are my choices for the hour shows. For the 1/2 hour shows, so many choices .... Bill Holden, Ernie Ford, John Wayne. How about Frank Sinatra? Sure, the movie clip was edited out from all prints after the initial broadcast of "Lucy and the Dummy," but can I still name him??? hahaha!
*ClassicPinUp* 02-07-2008, 07:34 PM How about Frank Sinatra? Sure, the movie clip was edited out from all prints after the initial broadcast of "Lucy and the Dummy," but can I still name him??? hahaha!
If so than I add Sinatra to the TOP of my list . Would have been great if he actually did make an appearance on ILL or The Honeymooners (since he was good friends with Jackie).

Yes! The Japan episode with Bob Cummings is a favorite of mine as well. Tallulah was a riot :D
Bill S. 02-07-2008, 08:17 PM How about Frank Sinatra? Sure, the movie clip was edited out from all prints after the initial broadcast of "Lucy and the Dummy," but can I still name him??? hahaha!
I am SO out of the loop right now. Anybody care to explain this to me...
Benno123 02-07-2008, 09:31 PM When the ILL episode called "Lucy and the Dummy" aired in 1955 it came up a few minutes short in running time. Desi called Samuel Goldwyn and asked for footage from his latest film to preview on the show to fill time. From this conversation (and according to some books, from a secretary's call back to Desilu because Goldwyn and Arnaz didn't speak English clearly and Goldwyn didn't know what he agreed to!) came a clip of Frank Sinatra from the upcoming Guys and Dolls movie. Sinatra didn't know about the use of the clip and the day after the show aired people were saying to him "We saw you on I Love Lucy last night!" I don't have an original network airing of this episode - yet! - but the restored version on DVD has the introduction to the clip included, though the clip from the film is missing. (Due to license, I'm sure.) So in this respect, Frank Sinatra appeared on I Love Lucy.
In reality I know he actually didn't appear within the context of the show, but still .... would that count as a guest appearance???? :)
Larry Surrell 02-07-2008, 10:16 PM James G,
I loved watching Superman when I was a kid and have the DVDs. It was a great series.
My favorites were the Fred MacMurray episode, mainly because it is my second memory of watching TV (the first is Dinah Shore singing). My favorite half hour celebrity episode is Orson Welles.
desilu #1 02-10-2008, 10:25 AM My favorite is sort of a tie between Rock Hudson and John Wayne. Rock was dreamier and John was funnier.
OH Nuts! 02-10-2008, 11:51 AM Wm. Holden
InspectorExstead 02-18-2008, 12:23 AM william holden.
one of my favorite i love lucy episodes is the one he guest appeared on.
SPLAIN 02-18-2008, 02:25 PM Lucy got Taylor/Burton but later CBS vetoed the cost of getting Elvis, now that would have been a GREAT show, two icons together and all.
Janice 02-18-2008, 09:19 PM John Wayne. I've always loved him, so he's my favorite guest. Funny episode too.
Ireneparalegal 02-18-2008, 09:29 PM I too have to pick the John Wayne episode. I always get the feeling the way Lucy behaved with John Wayne is the way I would behave if I got close to John Travolta. When she puts that purse on her head...
SPLAIN 02-19-2008, 10:29 AM He was also great on The Lucy Show with her.
White Rabbit 02-19-2008, 10:19 PM Hands down, William Holden. LOVED it when he stared at her in the restaurant, and Ethel had to cut Lucy's spaghett w/the tiny scissors. I ROTFL every time. He was so funny, and his (and Desi's and Lucy's of course) reaction to Lucy setting her nose on fire was hilarious. I have the super hots for him, and I know that, had I ever gotten the opportunity to meet him, I would have acted just as silly as Lucy did.
I did, in fact, I turned into a size 10 mound of Jell-o when I met Mike Mills of R.E.M. once. Thay're my favorite band, and I groveled shamelesslesy and rambled on and on to him, but he was SOOOO sweet (and so tall!). I will NEVER forget the experience. Hopefully Mike has.
Similarly, when I ran into Peter Fonda in the street in NYC, I'm almost positive I said something to the effect of, "Boy, that chin is for real!" I could still kick myself, and that was about 18 years ago!
2nd choice on Lucy was Richard Widmark. When Fred and Ethel come in with the net, I could piss myself, I laugh so hard. Lucy is priceless under the bear rug and when she sticks the ciggies in her mouth and pretends to be one of Widmark's mounted animals, I lose all composure.
SPLAIN 02-20-2008, 10:26 AM I thought Widmark was wasted as a talent on the show, i preferred Cornel Wilde. The scene with the table in the room and the ventriloquist routine aws hilarious.
Brian Damage 02-21-2008, 03:10 PM I'm with Janice and Irene on this one. John Wayne was the best.
SPLAIN 02-22-2008, 03:46 PM Well, i'm with the others, Bill Holden was, LOL!
Lodee 02-22-2008, 07:55 PM But do you actually like his appearance the best or just the episode. I love that episode, but I don't know if it's so much because of him. It's more because of the spaghetti scene I think.
SPLAIN 02-25-2008, 03:55 PM Yeah, i think you're right!
