Well a lot of us have been very curious whatever became of the bigamist profiled on the Pre-Stack Specials. I emailed the King County Sherriff's Department a few weeks ago in hope of some information. They replied back today and this is what they said:

"His real name is John Lutter. He was arrested at LAX in late November, 2000 and extradited back to Seattle . He was released from jail in January 2001. It appears the bigamy charges were dropped when the victim(s) could not be found.

Case closed.

Hope this helps."

Yes, volume 10. He was the airline pilot who it was found out had numerous wives and common law wives. Apparently he had them living all along his airline route but his scheme came to light when the airlines promoted him and changed his route and all the women in his life began comparing notes. Its too bad he never had to pay for his crimes.

Thank you CD, an amazing update indeed. By the way, I found the following website dedicated to 2 of the most memorable cases of Special 3 (the second and last UM episode hosted by Karl Malden): Jack Lutter and Glenn Consagra....

http://www.freewebs.com/umupdates/

P.S. I am sure that somewhere I have read or heard before that the responsible of the website is a poster of this forum: either "Todd Mcafee" or "Kevin Paulsen", two of the most informed contributors, in my opinion , but I can´t remember which one.

Yes I know whose page it is. He is a veteran poster and I'll let him reveal himself if he wishes....:)

Actually we don't have a Todd McAfee who is a poster but I think I know who you're talking about. As far as "Kevin Poulson" I assume that means Dark Dante. You think he's one of the most informed posters....LOL! (Just kidding but he had that coming...:p)

Did UM ever air an update to the Todd McAfee segment? I believe the case was solved.

I did want to mention that i've been working off my buttinski lately looking for this segment, e-mailing people who don't post here left and right. No luck yet, but maybe a few points for effort?...:D I'll keep plugging away at it.

^ Very interestng about Jack (John) Lutter. I'm interested in that they could not find any of the victims as several of them were interviewed for UM. Maybe they died, moved away who knows? - At least one of them (Caroline?) sounded like she never wanted to prosecute Lutter to begin with and was still in love with him.

Yeah, I thought this was odd about not finding the victims. I wonder if maybe some of them had just moved on and didn't want to rehash all those bad feelings. He married one if his wives in 1980. That arrest was 20 years after the fact. 20 years is a long time.

I also wonder how he was arrested. I doubt someone who saw the special in 1987 saw and recognized him while standing in some line at LAX. I guess it just goes to show that when you're a fugitive you never can stop looking over your shoulder.

I believe an arrest was made, his house keeper as I recall. However, I think she was exonerated, or others may be have been involved because the case is still undergoing investigation and they are still asking for information on the Sheriff's website.

How funny... I was JUST watching the John Lutter case yesterday. Very interesting.

Don't get me wrong, the guy was a tool, but I'm amazed at how he was able to pull off what he did for so long. You would have to be pretty organized. I remember they said he intentionally picked women from "male dominated cultures" so they wouldn't ask many questions.

Too bad he'll never see the jug for his crimes. Hopefully the public humiliation will suffice.

Wow, so all of the cases featured on special 3 were solved.

You know what has always bugged me? - The segment from special two on the "professional female thieves" specifically Jackie Edmonds. I think the segment said at one point the secret service was after her. There was obviously no update to the case at least immediatley as it was never updated on special #3 but I still wonder if they ever caught up with her? - I personally find it highly unlikely that she evaded capture but who knows?

The reason I ask is much like John Lutter (who they caught in 2000) if Edmunds was say apprehended in 1996 for example, UM probably wouldn't have updated it as they never showed the Malden specials after they were repeated a second time.

The two cases on special two that remain unsolved (Kyra Cook and this one) still bother me to this day. I know a lot of you don't think Kyra's case was fitting for unsolved mysteries but what she says at the end of the segment about how she looks forward to the next twenty years so she can build up a cache of memories always has touched me for some reason. Maybe because its twenty years later now and I dunno I just hope she was able to make something of her life...anyhow thats me finished for now :)

What I don't get about Lutter was hadn't the statute of limitations expired by 2000? Any of you legal experts feel free to enlighten me. UM aired his case I believe in 1987 and here 13 years later there still must been an outstanding warrant for his arrest. When they mentioned they couldn't find any of the victims I immediately felt sorry for all of his kids. That must mean he doesn't have any contact with them. I'm not saying he would have been a good dad, as clearly he wasn't, but at least the kids may have wanted to meet him and have some sort of relationship with him. I can understand why all of these women moved away and started their life over. Probably the last thing they wanted all those years later was to prosecute their children's dad and have to relive all that pain in a court room. Plus like Dante said it seemed that at least some of them still held some sort of affection for him. Since he never had to pay for his crimes, makes you wonder if he's out there doing the same thing again to more unsuspecting females.

Yes, that has always haunted me as well. What became of Jackie and the three(?) women also profiled. While I obviously can't say for sure, I do feel there is a good chance she was eventually captured or voluntarily came forward and worked out some kind of deal to dispose of the charges by pleading guilty/no contest. If the latter occured, this would have been under the radar since I was never able to find anything about her arrest in the newspapers.

I agree, its doesn't make any sense unless she just got tired of all the media attention. That makes you wonder if the women who cooperated with UM in filming the segment did so with the hope of finding Lutter and reuniting with him instead of prosecuting him. After all the two women who were interviewed in the UM segment both didn't turn him in when they had the chance.

Btw, I looked up Jack Wagner on IMDb and I think the name of the movie was Frequent Flyer so I answered my own question, lol.

Actually if you look at some of the reviews from the "Frequent Flyer" film - the husband of one of Jack's children posts about him. Its a recent post dated 4/2007 - He claims that Jack has never been found (we know different):

"I am not sure of the case you state with the doctor, but this movie is loosely based on my wife's father. He was featured on Unsolved Mysteries (with Robert Stack). He was an airline pilot and did indeed have wives spread around the country. He abandoned my wife's mother (and his four daughters) so she brought up the children on her own. Two of the four children had barely even saw him and two never knew him.

The bigamy came to light with my wive's oldest sister was coincidently watching Unsolved Mysteries and to her disbelief, there he was. In the segment, one wive of his began investigating and discovered two more wives as things unfolded. What was/is ironic, is that my wife's mother was not even included in this show, thus adding an additional wife to the count.

His whereabouts were never determined. He was never located. I imagine that he has probably passed away now. Living on the run since the early sixties must have taken its toll."

This bothers me. Does anyone else have vague memories of seeing the PSS or at least segments from them on Lifetime? I have a very foggy memory of seeing the Unabomber segment on Lifetime years ago, but I could be mistaken. I guess we can't prove a negative, but does anyone know for sure that the specials were not syndicated?

I'm pretty sure a snippet of the Unabomer segment was shown in another segment (although I can't figure out which one right now). Perhaps that's what you're thinking of?

I've never seen any of the Burr/Malden segments on Lifetime, and I'm sure I would have remembered: particularly since I was very much hoping they would've play the Wanda Jean Mays segment at the time and wondering why they hadn't.

I have a pretty good feeling they weren't. I've heard that they used to broadcast for example the Tara Calico segment during those half hour UM blocks late at night during the early years but the thing with the specials are is that they had different hosts and I never remember seeing Burr or Malden host anything UM related until you sent me those DVDs Justin. I would think that "Lifetime" would be wary to broadcast them just because of the royalty issues. I think it would be very interesting if they are included in the upcoming SPIKE TV repackaging.

You're probably right. I could have sworn I saw the Unabomber segment during one of those late night half hour blocks, but I must be mistaken, or it could have been that footage from the Zodiac episode. The thing is, I want to say Stack was narrating. I'm certain I would have remembered if it was someone other than Stack. On the other hand, I don't think I even knew the PSS existed until I got the internet and found this site and the episode guide. In fact, I was surprised that someone had made an episode guide that was pretty darn accurate considering all the moving around of segments Lifetime would do.

Here's the deal. I just watched this on UM on Lifetime (with Farina) and the UPDATE was yes, he was released on proboation, but they said he *ran* when he was on probation which was a violation, and he hasn't been seen since. So the Seattle police issued a warrant for his arrest. Again, according to UM on Lifetime (with Dennis Farina as host). "If you have seen Lutter, please visit unsolved.com".

"Update:

Jack Lutter was finally captured after he was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport. He was taken to Seattle and convicted of bigamy. He served his sentence of 90 days and was released on probation. But he violated his probation by disappearing once again. A warrant for the arrest of Jack Lutter has been issued by a Seattle court."

I believe Crystaldawn contacted the sheriff's department (possibly in King County) and was told that the charges against Lutter were dropped because none of the women could be located. So, there would not have been a bigamy conviction and probation to be violated. The only thing I can figure is that possibly he was convicted of some other offense related to the bigamy, put on probation, violated, and is on the run again.

Or, the bigamy conviction may have been entered in another jurisdiction.

Or, UM could be totally wrong.

In any event, I often wondered if he continued this behavior. It doesn't seem like there is/was much in the way of stopping him.

As for my personal opinion, I lean in that direction.

It just seems odd to me that if he was convicted, and presumably that there was a trial, that no reference to it can been found.

Anybody have any more info on this guy? I find him to be interesting. I know they made a movie, but this guy could write a book on his crazy schemes.

I think his wife Caroline was really dumb for not involving the police when she could. I understand that she still cares for him, but what about all the other women and kids? Knowing him, there's probably atleast another 5 women she never knew about. I think it was a little shortsighted thinking and did more harm than good for everyone involved. I also think it's dumb as she missed out on money that he might have owed her. She seems like such a nice lady though which makes it extra awful.

Can't imagine what his kids think of him. The 15 of them and possibly more, probably have some interesting stories to tell. If there was ever a follow-up or another segment on anyone, I'd want it to be on this guy.

Just watched this case for the very first time and noticed a couple of things:

-At one point during the segment when Lutter's wife Fatima searched his condo, Malden says she found a "cache of personal belongings", but he pronounces cache as "cash". Thought that was kind of funny.

-Fatima's line about not finding Lutter attractive was also funny as well.

-Caroline decided to not turn him in to the authorities because he was like a "wounded animal". Then she went on to spend the entire weekend with him?! That was a big "WTF moment" to me.

-Pretty impressive for Lutter to have been on the lam for all of those years without being caught. I personally don't think he continued his bigamist ways, and I wonder if he keeps in contact with any of his children. I picture him living the rest of his years broken, sad, and lonely...almost like a hermit. And I think that would be the ultimate justice in this story.

Many years before I'd even heard of Jack Lutter, I saw a movie only once on Lifetime that I'm 98% sure had the same basic premise as the plot: bigamist dude leads separate lives with different families while trying not to be discovered by any of them, except the man was a physician. I remember this clearly because there was a kind of disturbing scene in which he would not stop giving CPR to a patient in the OR who hadn't had vital signs at all for a very, very long time (I think well over one hour) and the attendings were basically trying to pull him off.

Anyway, did anyone else see this, and was it based on a true story?

Apparently Frequent Flyer is the movie based on Jack Lutter:

And the originally named The Man with Three Wives is the one I remembered:

Page says it's fact-based but doesn't elaborate. If so, just curious to see how similar it is to Lutter's story.
