Do you guys think the story was for real? I'm starting to have doubts about the story myself because some of the stuff that happened doesn't seem credible.

I agree.
Entertaining as hell.
But not credible at all.

Well, I think this one falls into the "unsolved" category as it technically can't be proven nor disproven. However, I tend to think this story is a hoax. I think most people here do. Regardless, it will go down in the halls of UM infamy for having some of the most unintentionally funny moments and dialog ever in a UM show.

Is this the same one where the guy and his wife are in the living room one night and he suddenly asked her where "Liza" was or some completely random name to that effect that his wife had never heard before and they later found out it turned out to be the name of the former woman who lived in the house before them and hence assumingly the "ghost "that was haunting them?

Yeah, except I think the name was Isabella. Then they played Ouija board and got the name sirname "Krammer". So the ghost's name was Isabella Krammer. Not so surprisingly, there were never any records found of anyone with that name who had lived in the house in previously.

I had to dig up this old thread because UM showed this segment again today. Heavily edited, if I remember correctly.

The skinny wife, holy cow, what a liar! She performs all the body language cues of someone who's lying. She can't even hold eye contact for longer than a second and a half.

If any part of their story is true, it would be the smell of a burning motor, so says Dennis Farina, which would make me think they had electrical problems. And then the paranormal people came in and experienced weird electrical readings on their meters.

That's the only thing I can think of that was "haunting" their house. A case of bad wiring giving them that freaky energy field thingie that makes people have headaches and hallucinations. Otherwise, I'll have to go with the Shrooms and Sex theories of other posters.

At the risk of sounding like a gulliable idiot...I think the people in the segment really believe all the things they're saying (except for Alan's young wife...she looks shifty, to say the least)

Maybe what happend was...they thought there were ghosts in the house, so every little thing that happened that was odd was attributed to the ghost/demon possession when in actuality there were more mudane explanations for everything.

is there any explanation for the light bulb that blew out when the lamp was unplugged? supposedly the wife "PO'd the ghost".of course all we have is their word for it,and I think they were lying.
I just find stories where objects go against the laws of nature to be uncredible (objects flying, floating, etc).not that the person necessarily is lying, just that I don't think the laws of gravity and the universe can be defied by something unseen.that is JMO though.I find visions more credible than anything else,as I think they come thru the mind's eye,not from anything physical.JMO.

This segment is most notable for its "camp classic" moments, which rank it with the Bonnie Wilder segment and--to a slightly lesser extent--the unconvincing drag show that was the Liz Carmichael segment.

That said though, I've often wondered if the Mann family concocted the haunting as an attempt to get out of their mortgage and/or as a means of profit--both of which seem to have motivated the Lutz family to cook up their "Amityville horror." Interestingly, the segment never reveals what became of the Manns' house after they skedaddled.

From the very first time I saw this segment, I wondered how do you just leave a house you owe a mortgage on? Well, I know it is done all the time..but...

but if they truly believe this house was haunted and were that afraid-yes I could see them walking.

OTOH, what if they were just doing this a la Amityville? maybe the son really didn't have a 16 yr old bride. Maybe she was someone they hired to play the part....hence her looking older and harder than a 16 yr old child bride should look...

Have always wondered about an update to this segment.

I believe that THEY think that their house is haunted. Does that mean it is? No. Maybe they exaggerate a bit. There are plenty of people who hear things and see things out of the corner of their eyes and whole heartidly believe it must be ghosts. It very well could be ghosts but it also could be something in their mind. Problem is once someone starts believing in something like this, there is no other explanation that satisfies them so to this family Isabella is real.

Now I don't think that the reinactment parts help their case either. What could have been very frightening to them looked really silly on UM  And it really did. The posessed wife, the crazy little dog named prince, the lamp on fire, Makes me laugh just thinking about it.

how do you leave a house with a mortgage on it? it's called a foreclosure.I wonder if they were looking to get it declared legally haunted,as there is a house that has been declared just that, here in the US.(or at least,it might give them some sort of excuse..). or perhaps they were looking for exposure for it,so it might be easy to sell to a ghosthunter.they probably thought getting on UM might convince others it was haunted.yes, would love an update on this one.

If you look up the mother on the property appraisal website you will find that she owns several properties given to her by her mother. She most likely rented out those other homes which by the way are in pretty decent neighborhoods for that area. So the story of them needing money is doubtful to me.
I believe that the young girl may of had a few weird experiences in the house when she moved in. She started talking about them to the family and someone brought up the idea of ghosts. Coupled with the bad wiring problems causing other things to happen in the house they may of just decided "lets go on UM" and made up some other spooky sounding things to fill the time slot.
To me I wouldn't say its the worst example of this.. at least a few of us got creeped out by watching. I know that after watching a very creepy but now comical fiction movie, about a lake being inhabited by an evil floating blob of goo. I could never again feel comfortable swimming in anything I couldn't see the bottom of. But isn't getting totally creeped out whether real of fake, what we watched for in the first place??

As to the questions some people had re: Did these people really think their house was haunted but were mistaken or was this a hoax, made me recall an old episode of Ghost Hunters.

A woman thought her house was haunted because there was a ghostie in her basement that was always banging on the floor under her chair in the living room.

The investigators went downstairs and found that it was nothing more than a drain pipe for the sump pump. Every time the sump pump ejected water from the basement drain, it would send it through that pipe and out of the house. The pipe had loosened from it's fasteners over time, and since it was no longer completely secured, it would wiggle around and bang on the floor joists it was attached to.

I couldn't believe the woman couldn't figure out something that simple. Or maybe she already knew and just wanted to get on tv, I dunno. But if people really are that clueless, I guess every little pop, crack, and squeak the house makes could be blamed on a haunting.

Upthread, I had been wondering about these people's ages. If they are telling the truth about how old they are, the husband Alan was about 21 and I'm guessing the wife Linda might have been about 17 or 18 at the time their segment aired.

Time Line:

Autumn 1991 - 19 year old Alan Mann, unmarried, living with his parents, sees a ghost in their house.

Unknown date - Alan marries Linda, she moves in with Alan and his parents. She and the rest of the family also experience paranormal activity in the house.

October 27, 1993 - The Mann House/Lake Wales Haunting segment airs on UM.

The house address is 1424 Lakeview Rd, Lake Wales, FL 33853

I found the info in the linked article below. It also says they were renters there, so that explains the quick departure, without having to go into foreclosure, since they were not owners with a mortgage on the place.

Found the info here:http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1346&dat=19920823&id=D90vAAAAIBAJ&sjid=TPwDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4385,1178296

---

I also came across this info while trying to find the location of the house.

It looks like Alan's father David Mann passed away in 2007. The obituary says he had a daughter (I didn't know that, was it in the segment?). Alan is also named, and was married to another woman, not Linda, at the time of his father's death.

If this were a supermarket tabloid, the headline might read: "Ghost possessed woman assaults husband". But this, of course, is serious.

It's certainly serious to David and Sandra Mann, their son Alan, and his wife Linda. They say things sometimes go bump in the night - and in the day - at their rented home at 1424 Lakeview Road in Lake Wales. And it has gotten past the point of being amusing.

They tell of sudden chills, temporary body possessions, unexplained sulfurous odors, apparitions and a long forgotten grave yard. Of "negative lay lines" that surround the earth, of house cleansing rituals, and of the perils of Ouija boards.

It all started about 1 1/2 years ago when Alan, then 19, saw a girl at his bedroom door in the middle of the afternoon. He spoke to her and she disappeared down the hall. He checked the house, found no one, and discovered that the house was still locked from the inside. Sandra Mann said she did not immediately think much of it.

"Hey, you've got ghosts in here," was the morning announcement made sometime later by a house guest.

About the second or third night after marrying Alan and moving into the house, Linda, then 16, came out of the bedroom screaming and was insistent that she had seen a ghost.

This was followed by other strange incidents. Covers that were kicked off the bed would be found neatly folded; papers that were blown off a dresser would be found neatly stacked back on the dresser.

"I was in the kitchen, getting a cup of coffee, when something in white went by and went into the living room," Sandra Mann said. "Nobody else was in the house." And, she said, the appearances would be accompanied by a strong sulfur odor, which eventually drove the family to pay to have the air conditioning system checked.

David Mann, 48, said he initially "refused to participate in ghost stories". But then came attempted possessions, and even a temporary possession of Linda, they said. "If there's a possession taking place, you can't ignore it," David Mann said.

In July, Linda, now 17, attacked Alan after being taken over by a spirit, the family said. The 105 pound woman pinned her 260 pound husband to the bed. "She just got really strong and attacked me," Alan Mann said. "With all my strength, I couldn't lift her off." He finally managed to "smash her against the wall".

"Alan was terrified," Sandra Mann said. But Linda Mann said she neither remembered the incident nor believed it until she discovered bruises on her back where she had been slammed into the wall.

There were also what the Manns believe were attempted possessions of Sandra and Alan, which resulted in unexplained chills and severe headaches.

And there were other sightings. Mann said he believes the spirits are not associated with the concrete block house built about 25 years ago, but were in the area when the house was constructed.

Janyce Ahl, a Lake Wales historian, said the house is located in the same area as a cemetery for workers at the turpentine still operated by her father on the east side of Lake Wales. [Oh come on! A man operating a turpentine still has a private cemetery for his workers? Don't their families want their bodies so they can bury them in the family plot? The local "historian" totally lost all credibility there, imo.] Ahl said the cemetery was dug up years ago and the bodies moved.

Mann believes some of the spirits may have lingered. "I don't want to believe this stuff, but I know it's happening", he said. People who know the Manns say they are convinced that the family believes what they are saying.

But are there really ghosts? "If I had to swear in a court of law, I would say I really don't know", said one person familiar with the situation, adding that she did not want her name used in connection anything dealing with ghosts.

David and Sandra Mann visited a spiritualist in Cassadaga, near DeLand. Linda and Alan Mann contacted Edward Ethington, a Winter Haven numerologist and hypnotist-healer. The Reverend Margaret Ann Schmidt of Cassadaga provided the Manns with a formula to rid the house of ghosts and with prayers to say to help them on their way.

Schmidt initially was reluctant to talk about the case. "It would be very unethical", she said. "Confidentiality is very much a part of this. We could lose our gift." But with the Manns permission, she said, she could discuss the situation under the rules of the International General Assembly of Spiritualists.

And Schmidt says she believes there is more involved in the matter than just the spirits that may have come with the land. By using a Ouija board in an attempt to find out what was going on, Schmidt said, the family may have inadvertently attracted other spirits.

Ouija boards, she said, "can be very, very, very dangerous" and are not to be played with. She said there is a field of "low entities - spirits not of the highest and best caliber," that can be attracted by Ouija boards.

The Manns performed the ceremonies provided by Schmidt, and then Ethington performed a "house cleansing" of his own, which the Manns videotaped. Ethington declined to discuss specifics of the case, saying he wasn't interested in publicity.

On the videotape, he used what he called an "aurameter", which is similar to a divining rod, to identify two "negative lay lines" that intersected in a bedroom door of the Mann's home.

Ethington said the Earth is surrounded by negative and positive lines, and that the intersection of negative lines creates a vortex that can serve as an entrance and exit for spirits.

Ethington, who wore a hooded robe, placed candles and incense at specific spots in the house, called for "Archangels" to provide protection, twirled a crystal over his head and said prayers. "Whatever he did, I think it worked", Mann said.

While they've since sensed the presence of a spirit and occasionally smell sulfur, overall spectral activity has decreased, family members said. [Then why did they go on UM a year after this article was written?] Meanwhile, the family is hoping to find another place to live that is within their price range.

"When we rented this place, I never thought to ask if it was haunted", Sandra Mann said. "I will now."

Can we just talk about the Mann's for a second?

I was curious about the families life after just seeing this episode for the umpteenth time. I always thought that they faked the ghosts to get out of paying for their rent/mortgage, something along those lines. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to check the Polk County Lake Wales clerk of courts. It seems that after the episode aired in 1991, a few of the family members got into quite a bit of trouble.
I figured I'd find records of not paying for something or another but what I found was much more interesting.

It turns out that stud muffin Alan Mann was charged in June of 1991 for Battery.
In 1993 Alan Mann was charged with domestic violence spouse battery. It seems the ghost possessed him to lay his hands on his 16 year old bride. No, But seriously, what a jerk.
In 1994 Alan was charged with a felony of firing a gun in public as well as "Improper exhibit of a firearm-dangerous." I'm guessing he was wielding a gun in public like an idiot.

You can take a look at Alan's public records here:https://www2.myfloridacounty.com/ccm/do/personCaseSearch?q1=1i_25F6bNFrlNcqk4qg6MA

Sandra Mann (Alan's Mother) was charged with selling marajiuana in 1993.
In 1999 she was charged with public consumption.

Yep, these wack-a-doodles never saw a ghost. They were too busy beating their underage wives and smoking illegal drugs!

I feel bad because two years ago on this very thread I said that I had the urge to look them up on facebook but that I never would. Oops. Oh well. Clerk of Courts isn't the same as facebook.

It's funny though because in the segment they talk about Linda the 16 year old bride being possessed and attacking Alan. I wonder with his charges of battery and spousal abuse if they actually were in a fight attacking each other and they blamed it on ghost possession. LOL

The only explanation I could come up with for the haunting is if a woman named Isabella Kramer attended some sort of prayer service/religious meeting at the house (which would explain the chanting), and a candle started a fire that burned the house down (which would explain the burning smell), killing her. That is, if the haunting is to be believed.

As with the reincarnation of Jennie, no one ever found that such an individual existed.

The best part about the Mann House Haunting is actually Robert Stack's deadpan narration.

"Many snails were sacrificed, but the ghost remained"

"Alan and Linda knew they had a ghost. They didn't know that it had an ambushed planned!" (I just rewatched the segment last night and that line nearly killed me).

LMFAO. This whole segment had me rolling from beginning to end. Then I got back on here, searched for it and found the old comment I made about Linda's "ambush" (Alan's girl has to be the first one I've heard of who is into S&M.....which in this case would stand for 'Supernatural & Mysterious').

I suppose back in the day there could've been some tragic accident that claimed the life of "Isabella Kramer" or perhaps the development could've been erected on top of a cemetery (UM did a segment on just such a case, on the edge of Houston I think?). I'm more inclined to believe this is all one messy acid trip though

Sorry to hear about their deaths. Whether the ghost story was real or fake, it is especially sad that Alan died so young. Rest in peace.

The only one I found even remotely credible was the Dad. I do believe he was right when he said "I though I was livin with a bunch of flakes".

Outside of laughs, the best thing about this segment was the Mann's little dog, Prince. He was really cute.

David Mann was the best thing about the entire segment! I have a feeling that he obviously knew the entire family were a little weird but went along with it anyways so they wouldn't come off as a bunch of oddballs. As far as I know, he's the only person in the family that never saw a ghost or witnessed anything unusual but noticed that strange smells were coming from inside the house which could be from anything.

That's too bad - this segment was good for some cheap laughs

Yes I was really sad to see this. The poor sister...her mom, dad and brother all gone.
