View Full Version : Nicholas Cage To Quit Acting?

Actor Nicholas Cage is threatening to quit the industry because he has "grown tired" of appearing in blockbuster movies. The World Trade Center star admits he has lost his passion for acting and laments his career has forced him to become reclusive.

He says, "Some movie stars look like they are having a ball, but I'm tired of it. It has made me reclusive. That is an increasingly gnawing feeling in my body. When I first started I loved it. One of my frustrations is I have no control. I haven't worked in a while, and it will be eight months before I start my next picture. I know for the first time which direction I'm going in and what changes I want to make."

The Oscar-winner also fears his fans are tired of watching him on the big screen. He adds, "For some reason, I p**s off the audience. People who like one type of film don't like to see me in another. Things I did and said early on still haunt me. I started acting at 17, but I'm 44 now and have grown up. I wonder if I am still interesting to watch if I didn't drink or raise hell, but it's obnoxious to keep drinking."

I think he has grown tired, he talks like he's sleeping half the time.

He could always go Indy.

I agree, he should do some indie films. I think he's fantastic in smaller movies, it's partly his fault that he keeps taking action movies

he should get more diverse roles such as drama and comedy, as opposed to action movies. usually that term action refers to actors such as bruce willis, sly stalone, arnie, nicolas is much more than that. i liked raising arizona and it could happen to you. he also starred in honeymoon in vegas, wild at heart and leaving las vegas to name and so he should star a lot more of those types of movies. i think he is a good actor- he gets criticised a lot, not so much because of his acting ability but mainly in regards to the types of movie projects he chooses.

i hope he doesn't quit and i don't get bored watching him altogether- i just wished he'd get better scripts and parts where he does display his talent, rather than shoot people and beat the crap out of the bad guys because it is mundane and tedious to watch, well for me that is, anyway

He just sounds burned out. Maybe he needs some time off, a year or so. Nicholas Cage has a very diverse body of work. War movies, blockbusters, drunks, family man, comedies, horror, etc. He's all over the map. He's one of my favorite actors, and I've seen every one of his movies. Just looking at his movies here, it's incorrect to say that he's stuck on any one type of movie. He's a busy, hardworking actor, who made it on talent, not pretty boy looks. I think he'll be around for decades to come.

Nobody is putting a gun to his head and forcing him to do crummy movies like "Ghost Rider" and "Next."

He can be a bit more selective nowadays.

Funny, with Nick Cage I either love him or hate him in a movie. Hopefully if he still works, it'll be more upbeat movies. I felt like killing myself after watching Leaving Las Vegas.

:clap Thank you!

You're welcome. I cringe when I think of what he would have done had the Tim Burton-directed Superman Lives! had been made.

people are way too harsh on Cage. He wasn't always doing crap like National Treasure, The Rock and Gone In 60 Seconds. He was a great actor early on, remember that he won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. He was also phenomenal in Birdy.

I loved his work in that forgotten movie of his VALLEY GIRL. He was phenomenal in that movie. It was his breakout role for him. I have that movie on DVD. His character was simple, but he made that character COME ALIVE.

I also liked him in HONEYMOON IN VEGAS. Another movie of his that I have on DVD. He cracks me up in that movie.

There has been times when I feel like he is playing the characters the same way, but overall, he has proven such diversity.

Not every movie an actor makes can be a masterpiece, and great roles are not always easy to find. Many actors work and take roles simply because they need the money, Robert DeNiro included. Their lifestyles are in place, and it takes money to maintain all that. Most are supporting a couple of families.

Cage has been working steady since he was a teen, and now commands 20 million a movie. National Treasure grossed 175 million at the box office (its sequel, 210 million), with Ghost Rider pulling in 115 million. Yeah, he's a real loser, lol. He wouldn't make the kind of money he does if people didn't pay to see his films. He's having a hell of a career for himself.

I'm not saying he's a bad actor, he just doesn't do it for me. I guess I'm more into actors like Wayne Rogers, Alan Alda, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Nicholson, John Ritter & John Larroquette just to name a few ;)

if Cage doesn't like the blockbusters, than don't make them... or, he should divide his time making the blockbusters and with making smaller vanity type projects that he can afford to do with movies like National Treasure and the sort being so huge. Matt Damon has done this throughout his career, doing movies like Gerry, Syriana, The Good Shepard and The Brothers Grimm in between blockbuster Oceans and Bourne movies. The Oceans movies pretty much allowed him to do The Good Shepard

I think Cage has mixed it up quite a bit with his movies. The point he makes in the article is right, judging from this thread. He says that some fans don't like to see him in certain roles. Some people are going to complain, regardless of what he does. Some people only want him in comedy, others, only dramas, that sort of thing.

I'm a huge fan, so I love him in blockbusters, war movies, as a drunk, a superhero, a firefighter, Christmas movies, whatever. Comedy, drama, and everything in between. Even if I don't enjoy the movie he's appearing in, I always enjoy Cage's performance. I like his acting. He seems like a cool guy too, in real life. I think he may just be burned out, or is tired of trying to please people who can't be pleased. He should just tune all that out and continue to do what he's been doing for 27 years, which is act. He'll have his clunkers, like every actor; however, for the most part, he's doing just fine in his career. Most aspiring actors would kill for his career.

^ the only actor I really have a problem with when it comes to his choices is Tom Hanks. Tom has distanced himself from comedy like there's something wrong about it ever since he won an Oscar. Now every movie has to be this big award-worthy epic. He forgets that he became a star with Splash, Big, Bosom Buddies, Turner And Hooch, etc..., but he won't do comedy now because he thinks since he won an Oscar that something funny would be a downgrade. Come on, he has two Oscars already, if he wanted to do a silly fluffy comedy, I don't think it'll exactly kill him.

Ohhhh, me and my boyfriend went to see THE FAMILY MAN at the theatre, it was awesome. It made him cry in some parts. I love when that happens. That is a great Christmas movie. As a matter of fact, ABC aired it this past Christmas. NOW THAT IS A GREAT MOVIE to see at Christmas time, not A CHRISTMAS STORY!!!! :snob:

I think Nick met his wife while she was waitressing, if I am correct. I sincerely hope this lasts. I think when one spouse is in show business and the other is NOT, it can help the relationship a lot more because there are no head trips or egos. God Bless them both.

In "Wild At Heart" he sang 2 Elvis songs. Love Me and Love Me Tender. He is a great singer. I personally think that his renditions of those songs are better than Elvis's. But then again I am not an Elvis fan;)
