View Full Version : Was that Canadian Rest Stop Killer (Long Blonde Hair) ever caught?

I could have sworn I saw on an UM update session or read somewhere that he was caught and it turnd out to be an ex cop, but then I also think I have read elsewhere that he wasn't caught and that was the wrong guy, and/or the guy had to be released due to lack of edvidence.

Any help?

I believe there was a suspect in the case named Ronald Glen West, but he was exonerated, so the crime is still unsolved, unfortunately.

I'm not so sure about the "exonerated" part. The last I heard, there was too little evidence to charge Ronald Glenn West in the rest stop killings. However, he is currently in prison for two murders unrelated to the case.

Well, as much as all murderers look the same to some people, the fact he is in prison for two unrelated murders doesnt make him the automatic suspect in the killings of Brian Major and Jackie McAllister and the attempted murder of Jackie's husband Gord.

I'm not saying West didnt do it, but arent the murders that he was convicted of the murders of two younger women? This murder seems completely different. This murder seems like the motive was just a guy that likes to kill, but robbery was part of it, probably to throw the authorities of the trail.

But again, it is innocent until proven guilty in this country and in Canada too for that matter, or at least that is how it is supposed to be but as people become more and more angry, it seems that it is guilty until you prove yourself innocent and that is wrong. I'm sorry, it is just plain wrong.

Well if it is the guy, he is in jail then, correct?

Yes........although like others have said, he's jailed for two other murders.

Here's a lil snippet I found about him.

Strange, I thought that was Michael Nicholaou.

That is the man who is suspected to be the Connecticut Valley Serial Killer, in New England. The Blind River Rest Stop Murders happened in southern Ontario, Canada. And AFAIK, the suspect wasn't a serial killer.

I phoned the Ontario Provincal Police in 2007. The officer in Blind River did a check and said Ronald Glen West is not the killer. The real killer is still out there with like a 50 000 price on his head. So this case is open!

Just one correction - Blind River is in northern Ontario, not southern Ontario.

I have been trying to find a picture of Ronald Glen West on the internet to no avail. I notice his case was on Cold Case Files today so I took a picture of him with my cellphone. I can see a resemblance to composite in the Blind River Rest Stop killings although he was never charged with the crime.

West hasn't been charged; is this perhaps due to lack of solid evidence rather than innocence? We've seen that many times with suspects in UM cases...

Hello People!! This is my first post. I acually live 10 mins. away from the rest stop that we so affectionatly refer to as murder park! Not long after the McAllister murder there was a murder suicide in the same park!! It was a husband and wife disput. As for Ronald West who at the time of the McAllister murder lived only 10 mins. east of "murder park" in the quite town of Blind River I still think he is our man! Good thing he is in jail! If you seen both pics and took away the long hair, or wig like some of us suspect there is a very close resembelance??I cannot find both pics on web at this time. Any help would be appreciated. Fredman

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the murders that West was convicted of are very different from the Blind River killings with respect to MO and the profile of the victims.

True. But if Ronald Glenn West was in fact the rest stop killer, there just might be some plausible explanations for why the MO in that crime was different from the murders he committed in 1970.

One possible scenario is that some details about the 1970 murders eventually became generally known, prompting the killer to change his mode of operation. Another scenario (however unlikely it may seem) is that he decided to use a different criminal method for the rest stop homicides as a ruse, so that it would be difficult for that case to be connected to the 1970 homicides.

Of course, this is not to say that West was the killer. Nor can we rule him out. But what I have described are merely hypothetical scenarios.

Not that it conclusively rules him out, but not only was the M.O. of his crimes different, but he, if I recall, didn't resemble the composite of the Blind River killer, and he was a good deal older than the 30-years-old estimation of the perp's age. I'm sure Gord McAllister could say with some certainty whether West was the man he saw that night.

This case used to scare the hell out of me as a child because of Brian Major, the poor guy just so happened to stumble onto a murder and he was killed. Not that Gord and Jackie aren't to be sympathized with, this is one sick bastard they were dealing with. I always admired Gord's determination to survive and actually talk about the difficult situation about losing his wife.

I'm pretty sure that he has passed away, unfortunately. :( He seemed like such a kind man and I always felt so bad for him. I'm pretty sure I saw in another thread that he is no longer around.

I agree

Even when I was young I remember feeling bad for him when he said he didnt care if the killer came for him and killed him

It was like because Gords wife had already been taken from him he didnt want to be without her :(

Gord McAllister passed away in January 1998. I never saw a sadder interviewee on UM than Gord. He looked like he had nothing to live for. Poor guy. I'm glad that he is with his wife now.

Very true Hambone

And I remember wanting nobody in the history of UM to get caught more then the Blind River Killer

Very true. I remember when he said that he had second thought about appearing on the show in fears that the killer may come after him but then thought that the killer would be doing him a favor if he came after him cause he could be with his wife. Sad. A couple work their whole lives for their retirement. The deck out the RV with photos of their family and then some maniac ruins it all.

Sage, there are a few on this board that do.

He looks very similar to the creepy (extreme understatement) composite sketch.

Also, I believe he was proven to be in the area around the time of the murder. If only Gord McAllister were still alive to ID him....

I just watched a profile of him on some detective show, and I paid attention to the eyes, since that's what Gord said was most unforgettable.

Having watched it, I have to say, he does resemble the the killer. And it makes even more sense, since he lived around there at the time.

By the way, so sad about Gord. Never forget him saying he doesn't care about life anymore :(

This is the case that sticks out in my head the most, it's the episode I really remember seeing when I was a small child. This story terrified me, I had a nightmare after seeing it and STILL remember that nightmare (I was younger than 8, I remember being in my parents old bedroom watching it). This is a mystery I wish had been solved, it breaks my heart that it wasn't.

I agree - it's one that still scares the crap & haunts me at the same time. The only other one that does this is the Angela Hammond case.
