View Full Version : The New Get Smart (1995) ClassicTVGal 01-29-2008, 09:37 PM Have any of you guys seen The New Get Smart from 1995? I wouldn't mind seeing it, just to see what it's like. Mikado 01-30-2008, 12:48 AM I saw it, Max and 99 didnt do a whole lot, mostly it was their son Zack, played by Andy Dick....the only shows that were as good as the original were the last 2 with Seigfried (played again by Bernie Coppel) and his daughter! Carrie 01-30-2008, 12:02 PM I saw it too. I have the episodes on tape somewhere, although I wasn't able to record the last one that aired. The best one was definitely the episode with Bernie Kopell. ClassicTVGal 01-31-2008, 12:20 AM Yeah I've heard it wasn't that great. (obviously only 7 eps were done) I read on the WYB... site (I think it was) that who ever thought Andy Dick looked like Don and Barbara needed their eyes examined! LOL That's a shame though that Max/99 weren't focused on it much... But I saw some captures from the show a couple nights ago and I just became more curious. I'm not sure I like the idea of their son being in it, well at least Mr. Dick as their son, esp without the sister! Mikado 01-31-2008, 01:07 AM Don was in every show as the new Chief, Barb on the other hand was working elsewhere and was only a part-time spy, if at all (She did mostly cameos on the show) Mr. Television 01-31-2008, 01:09 AM Sometimes you just can't go home again. I loved the original but I didn't even give the new show a look. I knew it was going to suck. Mikado 01-31-2008, 02:14 AM Don was in every show as the new Chief, Barb on the other hand was working elsewhere and was only a part-time spy, if at all (She did mostly cameos on the show) I think i remember that she was still a Congresswoman, as in Get Smart again, now that i think about it! Scoobiedoo30 01-31-2008, 02:43 AM it was a Sunday Night Show on FOX right ClassicTVGal 01-31-2008, 09:00 PM I think i remember that she was still a Congresswoman, as in Get Smart again, now that i think about it! I didn't think she was a Congresswoman in the movie, she was writing her memoirs and then became reactivated just like Max, who wasn't the Chief, since CONTROL hadn't been there for 15-20 years. He was working for the state. Mikado 02-01-2008, 12:30 AM hmm maybe i got the two confused there  ClassicTVGal 02-01-2008, 01:23 AM That's okay. I wasn't saying you were wrong. I just never thought about it I suppose. Mikado 02-15-2008, 01:18 AM Have any of you guys seen The New Get Smart from 1995? I wouldn't mind seeing it, just to see what it's like. Here's a clip from You Tube......it's amazing how little Barbara had changed in 30 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujhxCbQMSFg ClassicTVGal 02-15-2008, 01:24 AM Here's a clip from You Tube......it's amazing how little Barbara had changed in 30 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujhxCbQMSFg Yeah, I've seen this a couple times. And yes. Not to mention just the short 6 years (lol) from the tv-movie (1989) to the new series (1995). And in one of the "99" videos, at the very end they have a clip of her from the movie and then a clip from the new series back to back. Not much difference what-so-ever! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE0s_xEGRmo -- this is the one I'm talking about Mikado 02-15-2008, 01:51 AM She's still amazingly young looking for 75, for that matter treky 02-15-2008, 02:38 AM I read that it was so bad that midway through it; Andy Dick signed on to do "NEWSRADIO" when he relaized how bad it was. ClassicTVGal 02-15-2008, 11:38 PM I think I read about the NewRadio thing too. Anyway.. Did you know that Andy Dick and Don worked together (sorta) on something else? In 1999, Disney did a movie version of Inspector Gadget starring Matthew Broderick, who, btw, I am not a fan of, but this I didn't mind him in, (anyway) Andy Dick portrayed Kramer, one of the 'bad guys' (who I had totally forgotten was in the movie to begin with until just a few days ago) and Don was the voice of Brain the dog at the very (very) end. Carrie 03-26-2008, 07:52 AM Erin, it looks like you'll be able to see the 1995 series. :) http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Smart-Complete-Series-1995/9236 Lee G 03-26-2008, 10:22 AM The DVD's of the '95 show are basically for die-hards and completists only. Don Adams and Barbara Feldon were a little long in the tooth by this time, and Don Adams as chief of Control just didn't ring true. Add the simple fact the series just wasn't good and only lasted 7 episodes. I'll stick with the original series and pass on these discs. Get Smart was a product of it's time, 5 magical seasons. You cannot re-create the magic 30 years later, it will not work. ClassicTVGal 03-26-2008, 11:54 AM Erin, it looks like you'll be able to see the 1995 series. :) http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Smart-Complete-Series-1995/9236 Thank you, Carrie. :) If NetFlix "gets it" I may borrow it from there. Carrie 03-26-2008, 02:10 PM You're welcome. :) C_ME 04-10-2008, 04:02 AM I remember watching the series when it premiered. It was awful. Andy Dick was too klutzy to be taken seriously as an agent and Max and 99 were too old and never got to kick butt like they used to. The young female agent was okay but she had no one to play off. Carrie 04-24-2008, 11:50 AM TVShowsOnDVD.com has posted a look at the back of the dvd box. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Smart-Complete-Series-1995/9434 ClassicTVGal 04-24-2008, 02:57 PM TVShowsOnDVD.com has posted a look at the back of the dvd box. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Smart-Complete-Series-1995/9434 Thanks, Carrie. I'm surprised I haven't recieved an E-mail about this. I may have, I'd have to check my mail again, we'll see. It wasn't there earlier when I checked. Anyway, I like the image of Max and then the one of Max/99. :) I'm not really a fan of the other two actors, I guess 2 out 4 isn't bad, right? lol Carrie 04-25-2008, 11:51 AM You're welcome. :) I like the way they did the back. It's nice seeing Max and 99 together again when they're older. ClassicTVGal 04-26-2008, 02:51 PM It's nice seeing Max and 99 together again when they're older. Yes, and even since 1989, lol. :) ClassicTVGal 06-06-2008, 04:06 PM Well I got the disc today from NetFlix. I finished it and I'll have to say it's not down right awful, but I certainly prefer the original run much better. (of course, lol) It did have funny moments. But I don't think I, personally, would categorize it as part of the GS Family. Carrie 08-22-2008, 09:22 AM I got my dvd set too and watched it through in about one day. It was nice seeing them together again, but I definitely prefer the old series. I know they're trying to introduce new characters, but it would have been cool to see Max and 99 solve a case by themselves. My favorite episode was the one with Bernie Kopell. tv star collector 08-22-2008, 03:00 PM She's still amazingly young looking for 75, for that matter Barbara Feldon was born on March 12, 1941, in Butler, Pennsylvania (source: The Get Smart Handbook, by Joey Green). So she is only 67 years old. The 1995 Get Smart series was a pale shadow of the original classic series. Best avoided (in my opinion). No wonder it only lasted seven eps! Schmoopie 09-22-2008, 04:47 AM The 1995 Get Smart series was a pale shadow of the original classic series. Best avoided (in my opinion). No wonder it only lasted seven eps! I was at Best Buy last week and I saw this DVD that claimed to contain the entire series of "Get Smart". I had serious doubts since it was only one DVD and there's no WAY they could get all those episodes on one DVD. Then when I turned it over, I saw "1995" and figured out that it was the "revival" series. The classics are always the best, IMO. Andrea ClassicTVGal 09-24-2008, 12:32 AM Barbara Feldon was born on March 12, 1941, in Butler, Pennsylvania (source: The Get Smart Handbook, by Joey Green). So she is only 67 years old. They also state that she was born in 1941 according to a TVGuide Word Search book. But she was actually born in 1932. ph1l 07-28-2009, 04:25 AM I noticed it on the shelf here the other day and wondered what others thought of it. Judging by most of the comments, I should give it a miss. But I'm a bit of a Get Smart nut so I'll probably get it anyway. It was only $20. Adamantium 07-28-2009, 06:52 AM I bought it for two reasons. 1) I'm a completist. I own all the episodes of the 1965-1970 series, plus the two movies (The Nude Bomb and Get Smart Again) so I had to have the short-lived follow up series. And 2) I'm a fan of Andy Dick, especially from the mid 90s, which is when he was on my favorite show, NewsRadio. So I wanted it for him as well. And semi-3) It has a NewsRadio minisode in there. I wouldn't buy a show I despise, just to get that bonus feature, but it was just a plus. I just wanted to see what a NewsRadio minisode looked like. It's not some great show (or even good), but I'm glad I have it in my DVD collection. ph1l 08-07-2009, 04:16 AM Finally bought it and it was only $12.99. Did anyone else think there was a little homage to "Gilligan's Island" in the first episode? 66's very Ginger like conversation and agent 0's referring to Zach as little buddy. I'm up to "Goodbye Ms. Chip" and really liked seeing Dave Ketchum reprising his role. I thought it was quite nice having Zach calling him uncle. I'm not a big fan of the opening titles though. A drink machine just doesn't seem right. ClassicTVGal 09-27-2010, 12:16 AM Still watching that interview I mentioned in another thread (which I will have to stop soon and go to bed since I have to work in the morning, lol) and Barbara states that she didn't care much for it, which I don't blame her at all. It just didn't "evolve"... (her exact words). She has said more than once in the interview that you can't take something (usually) from 'back when' and then try and make it again. I can't argue with her AT ALL!! ;) SO agree!! I thought it was very interesting that she says that she did the show because Don did and that he told her that he did it because she did it, HAHA. |
