Adrien Brody would be a good choice. I read somewhere that he was an early choice the play the part before Ledger was cast.

If the Joker is essential to the plot, then they will obviously have to recast the part.

Post-mortem results on Hollywood star Heath Ledger have proved inconclusive, US authorities have said.

A spokesman for the medical examiner's office said further tests are needed and could take around ten days.

The Oscar-nominated actor was found dead on Tuesday in his apartment in New York.

The police are treating his death as possibly drug-related and sleeping pills were found close to his body.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the Brokeback Mountain actor was suffering from pneumonia at the time of his death.

Ledger was discovered at 3.26pm local time by his housekeeper when she tried to wake him for his appointment to have a massage.

He was found face down at the foot of his bed and prescription pills were lying nearby.

In Australia, Ledger's father Kim spoke of his family's grief and said the actor's death was accidental.

"We, Heath's family can confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda," Mr Ledger said in Perth.

"He was a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving, unselfish individual who was extremely inspirational to many."

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the country had lost one of its top actors.

He said: "Heath Ledger's diverse and challenging roles will be remembered as some of the great performances by an Australian actor."

Fellow Australian star Nicole Kidman said it was a "terrible tragedy" and sent her condolences to Ledger's family while Mel Gibson, who played his vengeful father in The Patriot, said: "I had such great hope for him."

The star was reported last year to have broken up with his longtime companion, actress Michelle Williams, who played his wife in Brokeback Mountain and was the real-life mother of the actor's young daughter, Matilda.

Ms Williams is travelling back from Sweden to New York and her father said: "Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described someone as having died at a young age but burning the candles at both ends, and oh what a beautiful flame he made."

Ledger is currently starring in I'm Not There, one of several actors playing a role representing Bob Dylan, and had just finished playing The Joker in the next Batman film, The Dark Knight.

Ledger's other film credits included A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball and Ten Things I Hate About You.

;) yeah, i was thinking exactly the same thing a few months back. michael urie aka marc from abc's ugly betty (the guy in my avator) would've made an interesting joker. i can picture him with the make-up, the clothes. mind you, he would make a good and younger version of the riddler :)

I'm glad to know that they're doing Two Face as the villain for the third film. The version of him in Batman Forever was a buffoonish cartoon, hardly at all like the dark, psychological character from the comics. With Aaron Eckhart playing Harvey Dent, this should be a good one.

I blame Joel Schumacher for why Batman Forever and Batman And Robin sucked, if Tim Burton stayed with the original film franchise, I don't think it ever would've turned into such awful parody.

batman begins was in truth the prequel to those 80s and 90s batman films and yes this film takes us on a journey as we discover how he becomes the caped crusader. batman and robin and batman forever were an embarassment- they took what was supposed to be a dark formula and turned them into campy, childish films

I was saying the same thing to my roommate the other day.

I would have loved to have heard him explain his interpretation of the Joker and how he developed his performance - which I just read gave him insomnia.

ComicMix currently has up an exclusive audio interview with Ledger, conducted last month, in which the actor explains why, exactly, he decided to take on the part. According to the actor, he had no interest in re-creating what Nicholson had so expertly displayed earlier, and that if Burton was directing this film he probably wouldn't have done it. But when Christopher Nolan asked Ledger to play Joker, he watched Batman Begins, saw a different angle he could take and jumped right in.

i know its not johnny depp thats for that other film
but please, someone will replace him yeah people say there are shoes to fill
but i beleive its harder to create a character then to copy one

I don't think Ledger will be replaced. Batman has many villains in his rogues gallery and I suspect the Joker will remain at Arkham Asylum for the rest of this Batman movie series.

I suspect we have not seen the last of the Joker. Based on what we know of the Joker, and on what we witnessed in the film, no prison can hold him. A part of me hopes we haven't seen the last of him, provided there is an actor that can pull it off.

personally, i think it would be an insult to heath's legacy, if there was another actor playing the joker. this was heath's role- he was perfect for this, although as cactus jack argued michael urie could've played the joker instead. they need to move on but i see him more as the riddler type. if they are going to make another batman movie then, it should feature new versions of the penguin, mr freeze, scarecrow, poison ivy, catwoman and the riddler. bit i'd definitely would say michael would be ideal for the riddler

I saw Dark Knight today. Excellent film, very well done. Another high point in the Batman film catalog.

Heath Ledger nailed the Joker. Without a doubt, he was perfect for the role.

Where do they go from there? Who knows. Another acotr might be able to play the part eventually, but...

The Joker doesn't have to be in the next movie.

The way they left things Batman has other things to worry about now. He's now an enemy of Gotham City, so the next film could deal with that.

But Chris Nolan and company has a lot of work ahead of them. The Dark Knight will be a hard film to top.

New rumour has it that Angelina Jolie will play Catwoman in Batman III. I could see that one. Yep.

But I will say again, I'd like to see them tackle a Bat-Villain that hasn't been done in the movies. When they announced Ra's Al Ghul for Batman Begins, I couldn't believe it. Those Neal Adams Ra's stories from the seventies were among the best Batman comics ever.

But there are bound to be lots of rumours in the wake of The Dark Knight's massive success!
