IIRC, Diane was also in the pilot for The Jeffersons that runs as an episode of AITF. Notice how Diane mysteriously vanishes, even though she is supposed to be the Willis' housekeeper!

I've wondered the same thing. I guess after seeing both actors, they decided Marla was better in the role. Plus, it was obviously supposed to be a small recurring role in the first place. She was only in a few season 1 episodes. I guess once Mother Jefferson left, they needed someone to fill the spot, and Marla was the one to do it.
