1988-2008, man the end of a era. Well I can't be too frustrated and have to move on. Never expected this to happen but that TV was always reliable since 1988 and I wish I could have held on for some more years but all good things eventually come to a end

Do you ever notice like a green line whenever you watching TV?
One of our TV's died just before Christmas and that's what we
noticed. The picture was getting dark and it kept showing a green light.

We had an old Zenith TV with rabbit ears for most of my childhood. Then a black line appeared at the bottom of the screen, and it grew bigger and bigger until it took up almost the entire picture!! As it turned out, my grandparents had just bought a new TV, so they gave us their old one. We had that TV for about 5 years.

it's hard to explain, i'm seeing this horizontal lines going across the screen. The sharpness is no longer there even when a cable wire is screwed into the TV

LOL - actually, if you've got a good signal, you'd be surprised just how much better even Good Times is on a Plasma!!

There's a huge difference in even the old black and white stuff like Dick Van Dyke. Everything's clearer~!

Time to come into the new Millenium Sol! ;)

The first sign of a picture tube going - is just having to ask the question! ;)

Oh man, that TV is probably on its last leg. I know some of those old televisions sure can last a long time, but I am sure it is getting ready to go. Sorry.

Yeah It's been through a lot, and all through the years I never thought about replacing it. All through the 90's and this decade, just never crossed my mind.

I see what you're saying Solomon, but in this digital era, it's time to let the TV go. Two years ago, I got rid of some wrestling books I had since the mid-late 80s, I just didn't have the room for them anymore.

My sister has a microwave she had since 1988, it was her first and it is still going strong. It was probably made ahead of it's time. One thing I do notice about her microwave, is that the digital numbers aren't as bright now as they were 20 years ago, but as long as it still works.

My condolences.

They don't make them like that anymore. I still have an old 1986 television, although it's in the closet and I don't watch tv anymore, if I ever needed it, I'd have it! It's a glorious feeling, having something you can rely on.

All these new-fangled hdtv/plasma invasions.... We'll see how long they will last...

Screw progress!

Funny thing is I would have still had the TV if it worked well for another 10 years-lol I guess once you are so used to using something it's hard to let go if it's not giving you any problems

I'm sorry to hear about your old TV. Maybe your new one could make it another 20 years or longer. I send my condolences. I had the old Magnavox TV from 1981-1996 which lasted about at least 15 Years. It was like an old piece of furniture before you had to get the TV stand or use a TV stand.

1996 we bought a new Sony TV with a turntray TV stand from Roberds along time ago. When my TV dies I'm hoping for an HDTV or a plasma TV.

(my condolences, Sol. I was distraught when my very awesome DVD player from 2002 kicked the bucket last year. It'd been with me through thick and thin. They just don't make DVD players like they should now, though... I think my dad is still using his original DVD player from 1998. Lucky bastard.)

I've had mine since early 1997, and I actually had to get the picture tube (I think) in it replaced last year - it fizzled out on me in October of 2006. I'm just glad the part was cheap enough to be replaced. :) I hope both of us have our TVs for another 10 years... mine is a pretty good TV. I'd like to upgrade, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

DLevine, are you talking about a console TV? My parents had a TV like that when I was a kid... I miss it too. You could put so many things on top of it!

didn't know tv's could last that long. i bought one in 2000, and about two years ago the power button managed to get itself completely pushed in even though there was never any rough handling. conveniently enough, a few months later, that bloody overplayed taylor hicks ford commercial came on once and i reached for the button to change the channel so fast that i busted it in and it doesn't work anymore. so the tv itself works fine, and i'm trying to make it last as long as possible even though it's just a bit of a hassle to work with now.

It really is amazing how long TV sets last because 20 years is a bit on the young side. Sorry it cashed in its chips--I personally hate having to go out and buy a new electronic item. When my color TV passes, I'll get another tube color either 13 17 or 20''. I probably won't get plasma.

VHS recorders/players live a lot less longer--mine's abt to turn 8 the oldest one I've had so far--knock wood.

The longest I had a TV was 7 years. We got it in 1987 and it died out in 1994.
Then we got another TV in 1994, but it died in 1998.

Not true. I think classic TV or anything pre-2000 looks terrible on plasma and LCD sets. Even with the best connections or upconverters (to 1080i), the picture still looks fuzzy. The rare exceptions might be "I Love Lucy" and "Seinfeld"... those look quite good.

I have a regular TV in the guest room and I only use it when I have to watch non-HD programming.

Could be it depends on the make of the television. We have a 50" Pioneer and the old classic shows looks clearer and more defined on it than they do on any other television in the house (and we have 2 rear projections - one is a HD rear projection and we also have an old tube model). My signal is on satellite.
I notice you mention 1080i - this is a 1080p - MUCH better.

There is currently no TV channel on 1080p. That resolution is only available on Blu-ray and HD DVD players.

Could be lots of different reasons - could be that yours is coming in analogue and being upconverted to digital - could be the carrier - there's lots of different reasons.

All I know is that the shows I watch - ANY of them look better on the plasma we have. I find it very difficult to look at a regular tube t.v. now (I know - snob!)
