Comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has beaten Oprah Winfrey to be named America's favorite TV personality in a new poll.

DeGeneres climbed up seven places from last year's Harris Poll to take the top spot, which had previously been ruled by media mogul Winfrey since 2002.

Fellow host Jay Leno came in third position, while House star Hugh Laurie and funnyman Jon Stewart rounded out the top five.
