View Full Version : Get a Life!
dawsongirl 01-09-2008, 11:14 PM Anyone had someone tell them that they need to get a life? I had someone tell me that today. I didn't realize I was missing one, but apparently I am. And this was solely based on the fact that my job is part time and I live with my parents. Nothing else, just that.
How rude and naive. Some people need to stop trying to change people into them. I'm gonna end up back in therapy. :(
Ireneparalegal 01-09-2008, 11:17 PM Too many people use that response when they have nothing better to say. They are being insensitive and crude. What may be important to you may not be to them, therefore, they think they can say such callous remarks. Sorry you had to hear that.

I agree...and what gives someone the right to define what "a life" is?

Exactly. ARRRRRGHHHHHHH:mad:

She likes to pick at the fact that I have a BA and I work as a teacher's aide. Yet so does she...and she has no degree. At least I went. No requirement that says I have to use it to the T.
So hypocritical....and yet I still let it bother me and make me feel bad.
Max Whittaker 01-10-2008, 01:16 AM I've been told that because I'm a fan of Star Trek.
Don't let it bother you. Nobody has got a life. It's a myth.

I agree. I hate that phrase.

Even though I have been a huge Star Trek fan since 1987, no one has ever really given me hard time about it. Probably because I have never been obsessive. I own the the DVDs and quite a lot of books, but I don't walk around wearing pointed ears or Star Fleet uniform.

Don't let it get to you, Cathy. You are a good person. :)

Maybe it's because I went to graduation in a Star Trek uniform...
friendsfan77 01-10-2008, 01:23 AM I hate it too. It makes me want to just shout back at them to STFU and mind their own business and that they don't know me 99.9% enough of the time to even say something like that, and even if someone did, I wouldn't want to hear it. It's rude.

That might have done it. ;)

I can't believe someone said that to you. What a jerk! I hope this person isn't a friend or a loved one because then you can more easily stay away from them, which is what you need to do. I can't stand people like that who say such things to other people because they are unhappy with themselves. I know it's hard not to feel bad, but I bet that comment wasn't about you as much as it was about themselves. Just let it roll right off of you...don't let people like that steal your energy...they are not worth it!
And by the way, in all reality, very few people end up using their degree in the area it was received in. You're more likely to have a job that requires a degree but have the job be in something very different than the area you studied in. Very normal. I think you're fine.
dawsongirl 01-10-2008, 03:15 AM I hope this person isn't a friend or a loved one because then you can more easily stay away from them, which is what you need to do.
Co-worker. This is day 3 of 3 so far that she's made some crack at me about not doing anything with my life or my schooling or whatever. I think some of it has to do with total bitterness (at least I hope) because due to a bit of a shakeup, she's losing some hours and I'm not. Well, fine, but it's hardly my fault; go take it out on a punching bag.

I agree. Or be like, "Oh yeah, and what life do you have??"
dawsongirl 01-10-2008, 03:19 AM Cathy, it was hypercritical and jealous (and very childish)
I've noticed that I seem to be surrounded by quite a few of those kinds of people. Yippee.
IDK...maybe I should be flattered that they're all so jealous of me.
OH Nuts! 01-10-2008, 08:23 AM I can't believe someone said that to you. What a jerk! Can always count on you & Irene to put things in perspective. 99.999% the people who tell others to "get a life" don't have one themselves. Many people live at home for a variety of compelling valid reasons--they really enjoy being around their parents, they save money and get to direct and use it more efficiently, don't want to use their degrees to the max so they can have a more balanced life--the reasons are many. It's always nice to be poliTe, but rude people who tell others to "get a life"' REALLY PUT THAT TO THE TEST.
TripperFan 01-10-2008, 10:35 AM I agree. Or be like, "Oh yeah, and what life do you have??"
That's exactly what I would have said back - and maybe even added, "At least I got a degree and have more options open to me down the road".
Ignore it - the person is ignorant AND jealous.
Ireneparalegal 01-10-2008, 05:35 PM "Misery loves company." <<< remember those words and not these words >>>GET A LIFE.
Those who go around trying to make others miserable, is simple, they have a miserable existence and they want to take others down with them.
Believe me, the more you smile and be happy and not show any reaction to what she says, will only burn her up inside even more. She will see she doesn't get a reaction from you and she will either stop or she will move on to someone else she can bother.
sunshinefizzy 01-10-2008, 06:09 PM You know what you say to that:
"You're right. I'll add that to the list on things I need from Target."
That'll shut them up. I even got some chuckles.

 I like that one.
Janice 01-12-2008, 12:23 AM Cathy, you've always come across to me as an independent thinker, who doesn't need approval from others. The next time someone says something like that, just tell them that it appears that they're the ones who need a life, if they have to concentrate on the lives of others. You could also privately tell them that your private life is off limits and that you don't appreciate being judged.
You're doing what's best for you, and that's all that matters. If you moved out, you'd be saddled with bills. If you got a full-time, high-pressure job, you'd be stressed out. That's what I did when I was young. If I had to do it over again, I'd live at home until I was married, and I'd work as little as I could.
I quit work almost seven years ago, after working very hard and non-stop for 20+ years. I had to put up with a few snide comments, as if it's a crime. I told one person that as long as my husband and I weren't asking anyone for any money, then it's a personal decision that's not open for discussion. Some people really suck, but I know you already know that, lol.
dawsongirl 02-05-2008, 10:14 PM So my little Get a Life girl was at it again! Not to me this time, but it still ticked me off. She was complaining about an in-law of hers who spends a lot of time surfing the internet. I don't know how much time is "a lot" to her, but nevertheless, she finds that this in-law, and people who are similar, need to GET A LIFE, because spending "a lot" of time on the computer apparently doing "nothing" is non-productive and stupid.
Well, gee, Miss Perfect. Must be nice to be able to throw stones. Maybe surfing the net makes this person happy. And who the hell are you to judge what makes someone else happy? And I personally don't think you can be on the internet and be doing "nothing." Even if you're just posting on a MB, or playing a game, you're doing something. And it can be relaxing. Who doesn't need to just chill once a day??
I just...uh, the gall of her to pass judgment over something like that. I think her idea of "a life" is boring and I don't like how she seems to be almost allergic to staying home with her family at night. But I'm not going to tell her that. That's her life. OMG, I just want to punch her.
And all this started when I suggested to her that she email someone after she stated that she keeps forgetting to call them to ask a question. She claimed she hated computers, but yet so many times at work she's sat on her email for an hour or more. Hypocrite.

exaaactly. either she's pissed about losing hours & the only way she can deal with it is by taking it out on you with immature comments. or she's jealous.
but the whole "get a life" comment is annoying. are we really still in middle school?
it's usually people who pick on other people or make harsh judgments against others that need to re-evaluate THEMSELVES. maybe she's the one who should get a life. or she's bitter/angry with herself or someone and she has to take it out on others to make herself feel better.
either way, not cool.

The evidence just continues to mount...obviously, SHE has no life... she basically spends her time here on earth telling people how everyone ELSE has no life... she really does need to get one herself And you can tell her that we said that :)
According to wikipedia:
"...The phrase is used by ignorant people as an aggressive response to someone with different hobbies, interests or attitudes to themselves: "You don't like the same things as me? Get a life!" "
