OK, type up what you think is the worst of the worst something that aired on UM. It could be the worst segment, sketches, acting, criminal, update, names, anything. I'll start.

That poor dog Wolfka. What were they thinking naming him that? I'm sure it means something in another language but, you've got to admit that's messed up.

The worst criminal I can think of right now is that unknown caucasian man who was well dressed, and would walk calmly into a store in a strip mall, and shoot to kill everyone in there. Then he would just walk out. Wasn't there a survivor? He told him "Hey man, I just came to buy some stuff I didn't see nothing", or something like that right? Anyway, what a --------!

wiseguy182
01-08-2008, 06:04 AM
that would be the I-70 killer. most of the time, there was just a single clerk in the store (it is believed the killer did his crimes at time when he thought there would be just one clerk in the store), although there was one instance where there were 2 clerks in the store. the survivor was never shot at - although probably would have been had he went in the back room as the killer requested.

Don't remember everything about the case, but my worst of the worst was the entire family that was killed in their camper somewhere in western ontario. That killer sure scared me too

I don't think that actor was bad so much as he was trying to show just how ridiculous that guy sounds when he talks that way. That actor handled those scenes pretty well, imo.

Here are my candidates for WORST JOB OF DEFENDING THEIR INNOCENCE:

1. Paul Pollis – Defiant, devoid of any kind words for his missing wife, seems to implicate members of his own family, sexes up dolphins. His whole attitude just really left me with nothing to connect with in his filmed interview. As a father of 2 children of close age, I’ll be dayumed if I ever would have involved them, plus another, on a 10 hour ride through town running difficult errands.

2. Timothy McClure – just thee most absolutely bizarre take on how to plead your innocence I could ever imagine. Regardless of all the weird occurrences that point to his guilt…just the way the man chose to answer questions makes him look either guilty or haplessly moronic or a cunning criminal mastermind who has committed the perfect crime and gotten away with it by pretending to be Forrest Gimp.

3. Donny Hanson – “Absolutely ludicrous” is what he deems any assertions that he killed his sisters, despite the FACT that he was caught trying to cover up a crime before anyone even thought a crime had occurred. Also chose to go with the “distorted face and voice” routine which goes a LOOOOONG way towards making you look like you got something to hide.

Here are my candidates for WORST MOTHER-IN-LAW TO HAVE:

1. Cheryl Nagi – As guilty as I think Paul Pollis, I have to empathize with the man for marrying into a family in which the mother and daughter communicate via phone 15 times a day, and when the grown daughter gets an ear infection the mother, having spoken with the daughter at 2 a.m., calls before 9 a.m. on a Saturday and then calls back every 20-20 minutes. Again, not saying anything good about Paul Pollis, but I can understand if the families didn’t like each other BEFORE Charlotte went missing. Oh yeah...then she splits with your daughter.

2. Sandra Maple – Nuff said.

That is so weird!! I was compiling this very list but I didn't know the exact names so i was going to wait until later. i have 3 nominations that might beat out Mrs. DePue:

1. The actress playing Pamela Ray (the woman abducted from the Florida motel at 5 am while her kids slept in the car).
2. The man who rented a car with Beverly McGowan's credit card.
3. Jeffrey Digman's dad!

Worst Acting in an UM Segment: "He's got Jonathan! That man has Jonathan!"

:D

I'd like to add this category: Worst acting from participant (not actor) and nominate:

One of the moms (Gayle) who participated in the re-enactment was a bit wooden. Check out the beat she's asking Joe when his wife will be back to teach piano lessons:
"When is Gladys coming to back Seattle and resume her (slight pause for head shake) music lessons (flutter eyelashes and clasp hands together)" before Joe loses his patience.
And curtain closes down on another amateur night!
It's on volume 3, from the Joe Owens segment.

Worst police sketch?
(Like, the ONLY police sketch featured on UM that did not gimme nightmares)

Drumroll...
I was flabbergasted when I saw Anne Tremont's (sic?) composite sketches (wanted for Charley Sigmin murder, disk 5)? That has gots to be the worst police sketch everrrr. Remember the one with the ponytail. Seriously. Did a 10 year-old girl do that sketch? All it's missing the rainbow and unicorns in the background and some glitter glue !!!

I was watching this segment with a friend and when that part came up, my friend sarcastically said, "You go girl! Way to keep his ass in check!" We both then fell on the floor laughing hysterically.

You've got to give UM credit in the early years for trying to get "the actual family members and police offices to participate in recreating the events". That's part of the problem I had with the later seasons of the show in which they got actors to portray the people.

Agree with you 100%, it's what gave the show it's unique charm and probably why it struck a cord with viewers. I prefer to view bits of amateurish overacting than the overproduced, overacted re-enactments featured on other shows.

Art Silva has got to be the most perverted person ever profiled on UM that I know of.

kadrmas15
01-18-2008, 07:25 AM
The only ones as perverted as Silva, Kenneth Robert Stanton is up in Silva's league, but I dont think Stanton molested his own children like Silva did, that is pretty much the lowest of the lowest of the lowest when you are not only molesting children but molesting your own kids on top of it! Silva got off with a slap, an 11 year sentence, he pled guilty or no contest, because in California, had he taken that to trial, even in the 80's he would have got much more time than that.

Tim Binder is another one that is pretty bad, the weird thing is though, I just dont know what to make of him, in terms of whether or not he actually abducted and murdered these little girls or whether he is just some sick creep.

Clearly, Binder while highly intelligent is a distrubed individual and is obsessed with these little girls and their cases, but whether or not he is a distrubed, obsessed individual that was abducting and murdering little girls is another story.

If Binder was murdering these girls and then planting himself at the scene, weaving his way into the family and helping in the searches than he is deeply distrubed psychologically. But I just dont know what to make of him. He goes to the grave sites, but that really means nothing.

While I feel horrible for Kim Schwartz, I felt like her deep dislike, bordering on hatred, of Tim Binder sort of blinded her and it made her pump up evidence against him that while it proved he is a perve and a distrubed individual, didnt prove he is a murderer. Afterall, that is a pretty big leap from being a pervert and a distrubed individual that sends notes written backwards to little girls you dont know, to actually abducting and murdering little girls.

Also, that one girl that Binder was suspected in was 13, another was 9, and the others were 4, 5, 6 years old, somewhere in that range, those are rather big age differences, usually these guys stick to a particular age group. So again, I just dont know what to make of him, anyone have any thoughts?

WORST ACTING

This has got to go to the two actors who played Florian Meyer Borscht and Lisa Something in the recreations during the FREEDON segment. The segment producers knew how bad they were, you can tell because footage of them is usually relegated to wide shots, overdubbed voices, and minimal dialogue. I swer, really watch these two. I've seen better acting in porn films. I've seen better acting in Tough-Actin' Tenactin. When the actual family members and police officials involved in the case can out-act you, you are a bad, bad actor.

I agree. There has to be something wrong when you try to pull all the stuff that she did.

Also, I read somewhere that in real life, she had actually poisoned a whole lot more of her relatives. The UM segment just touched on her husband and two kids (probably for a time constraint.)

Re: Worst Segment:

Has to be the magic rock one. When I first heard about it, I was like, "You're kidding. That's a joke, right?" Then I went to the forbidden site. Now I wish I could go back to those innocent days. It is, without a doubt, the stupidest segment ever airred.

As for worst people on the show, definitely Franklin Delano Floyd. He's on my list of people whom I hope there is a hell, just so I can watch them burn in it. I hate him that much.

Also, Chad Noe's family. You'd think when someone disappeared and you were the prime suspects in said disapppearance, you'd try to act a little concerned and heart-broken. Not these rednecks. Speaking of which, how is it that these redneck white trash hillbillies managed to successfully commit the perfect crime? I have a hard time believing they could get their GEDs.

I affectionately refer to Digman's dad as "Roadkill" in honor of that animal hide he wear son his head. I feel bad for the family but the toupee has got to go. How about Jule Caylor as one of the worst efforts in trying to seem innocent in his wife's disappearance? I actually laughed a little bit when I watched it for the first time because I couldn't believe he was answering some of the questions the way he was and just sounded like he could definitely be guilty.

It was odd to see, because most of the time we see suspects try to find ways to "prove their innocence" in interviews but in Caylor's case, it just seemed like he didn't care whether he looked guilty or not.

When I initially saw that segment I felt the same way and did for some time afterward. Later, I felt that his demeanor might be far more evidential of his innocence than his guilt. I still do.

According to the interview, and most of the information available to us on the forum about Jule Caylor (the Wendy's salad bar deal, for example), many of us conclude he seems to be pretty unusual. I realize there are those who have been interviewed on UM who have been surly about people whom they've allegedly "disappeared" (Chad Noe and company), but for the most part, what's more common is someone like Steven Marfeo. Feigning shock and pain.

Jule offers none of this from the start. He gives a plausible account of events on the days leading up to and the day of Dottie's disappearance with no apparent inconsistencies. It is known that Dottie was planning to either leave or at least divorce Jule as evidenced by her keeping and filling a bank box. Jule claims no knowledge of her activities outside the home until she left, so what is the motive? Marital discord? Jule was already once-divorced at that point and their marital problems were nothing particularly new. Why would he suddenly decide to kill her?

I think Jule's bitter and callous behavior is expressed because he may feel as though he can comfortably and freely do so as he may feel his innocence is obvious. Perhaps not to us viewers, and perhaps not given the manner UM portrayed the story, but I honestly think those were his feelings. Apparently he has gone on to remarry and has had great success in his professional life. Is his attitude about his wife's disappearance hard to watch? I think so. But I don't think it necessarily indicates his guilt. That's nothing more than my opinion, though.

Out of all the husbands/SOs interviewed on UM who proclaimed their innocence in their loved one's disappearance/death, Caylor stands out as an oddball.

I think it's easy to watch that and think he's arrogant, cocky and probably guilty. However, I can see it both ways.

Years ago I dated someone who had some problems that, although were not exactly the same as Dottie's, were similar. After we broke up, she did all that was within her power to make my life Hell - on some days. Other days, she tried to appear sympathetic and act like she wanted to get back together. In the end, I grew so tired of her antics that I completely cut ties and stopped communicating with her.

Not that I would have wanted anything bad to happen to her, mind you, but I think it got to a point where if something did - say she disappeared - I honestly wouldn't have given a damn. I'm sorry if that sounds cold, but it's the truth.

I would never assume I know how someone else feels, including Jule Caylor, but I can understand why he might not be pining for her after the fact if he truly was innocent.

Worst acting:

Besides the "actress" who exclaimed so blandly "that man has Jonathan!", are the two who played Maria Armstrong and the the cop questioning her for wandering around the Indian reservation. I've seen five year-olds do better in a Christmas pageant. Very painful to watch.

And one of the worst efforts in trying to seem innocent was Judy Grozinger. She came off as so bored in explaining the events leading up to her husband's death, and the fact that she had her girlfriend move in with her soon after while rumors were swirling around she and this woman were romantically involved doesn't help matters. Maybe her casual attitude is how she is in real life, but if your husband went missing and was discovered dead, I would think she would show a bit more emotion.

I can see how it would be frustrating to continually answer a number of questions that may essential skirt around "Did you do it?"--especially for years after the fact, and for that to spill over into one's tone and demeanor. I don't know, I just don't think the man did it.

I can see how it would be frustrating to continually answer a number of questions that may essential skirt around "Did you do it?"--especially for years after the fact, and for that to spill over into one's tone and demeanor. I don't know, I just don't think the man did it.

I've always thought Jule honestly thought Dottie was alive and well and just up and left him which is why he had a somewhat cavalier attitude about her disappearance.

Worst Hitman: Elmo Florence. Accepts a job from John Mooney to murder T.K. Harty for a grand total of $125, then blabs about the whole thing to a bartender who happens to be the victim's friend!

Worst Final Appeal Case: Paul Ferrell. Most of the other Final Appeal segments at least had a bit of reasonable doubt about the subject's guilt and provided some interesting debate, but I don't know of anyone who's ever believed this guy was innocent.

Worst Line Reading: I know people are partial to "That man has Jonathan!", but check out the male jogger at the beginning of the Leah Roberts segment and his delivery of the line: "Honey, there's a shirt... or something up... there".

Worst Robert Stack Blooper: Yes, even the great ones make mistakes. Watch the Niqui McCown segment and you'll hear him mistakenly say she was 20 instead of 28, which causes you to do a double take once he mentions that she had a 9-year old daughter!

Worst Prediction of the Future: Okay, we've seen some unconvincing psychics on the show, but I don't think any of them predicted the future worse than that so-called earthquake expert they had on, Dr. Iben Browning. I have to wonder if any viewers in Ohio were legitimately worried about this after the original airing.

yes, true and iirc, that was on UM.that was what opened the investigation up again, and what led Mark Fuhman to question why he would admit such a thing.A perp always has a reason for speaking, and this one was no exception.Michael knew dna evidence could be obtained from the body nowadays, and he was making excuses for his being there.the truth is,he was standing over Martha's dead body when that occurred, not up in a tree.I beleive the cornoner had so much as stated from the pics, that a sexual act had occurred over her body.

Yes, he actually said he was up a tree masturbating. I think he may have used the phrase "jerking off"

Was she walking home perhaps? I really hope she didn't suffer and it was quick. Because that must have been absolutely horrifying to see someone you considered a friend wielding a golf club at you, feeling the pain of it, and pulling your clothes down.

Marie Hilley- In a film they made about her, they had her setting her daughter's room on fire and stuff? I want to know if that really happened. The movie excluded her brother for some reason (maybe he didn't agree to it). I have to say that I really respect him for giving an interview on UM after all he went through and his tactful manner. I don't think I could be so calm after all that and I would probably be very bitter. I feel awful for the daughter, too, being paralyzed and so tormented by her own mother.

Edward Zakrewski- Just awful. Your wife wants a divorce so you kill her AND your two children who are young enough to be riding tricycles? What a ****. Killing his wife is horrible enough, but killing two young children who have nothing to do with the marital dispute in such a gruesome way makes it worse.

Robert Fisher- Another example of pure evil. Killing your two kids who have everything to live for because you don't want them to endure life with divorced parents. So disgusting. Yes, it's hard to have divorce in the family but he didn't even let them live to grow up and become the adults they would be now! Not to mention his poor wife, who also didn't deserve such a thing. I really hope he's not out in society.

Worst Random Crime:
Blind River Rest Stop/Debbie: All people who cooperated and did absolutely nothing to warrant an attack. Only the sickest of individuals could pull off such crimes against innocent people. I am pretty sure the Debbie criminal is in jail for another crime or something along those lines, because someone like him never would have stopped.

Worst Acting:
''That man has Jonathan!'' ''Look, I have a job interview, I gotta go.''
''Anyone wanna fight in here?''
''I just never liked my name...Sandy sounds nicer.''

Worst Story Concocted:
Wendy Long Case: Oh...she just got in a truck with two guys at a gas station who looked really creepy and didn't introduce them to me or anything.

Donnie Hanson: My God. So there's a man shooting people and you don't tell your parents? You just go grab fire extinguishers and don't mention a shooter until after one of your sisters comes crawling out of the fire. Then he claims he got her out- without telling anyone until bystanders found her across the street. And you also shouted at the guy and he made no effort to shoot you, even though you were right there? Hmm...WORST.STORY. EVER.
Worst Fake Crying on Camera:
Jeffrey MacDonald. When he talks about finding Kristin. No tears in his eyes, no trace of emotion for the other two. It just seems like pure crocodile tears.

Worst Faked Concern:
Larry Gibson professing his innocence way more than concern for his son

Worst Police Work:
Debbie Wolfe- Semen found in the body, clothes that did not belong to her, mess found in the house, no sign of her being conscious when drowning, and the whole burn barrel mess. Incompetence at its best.

Doug Johnston: Yes, guns totally walk away on their own after you shoot yourself? And one would definitely hold the gun a whole foot away and do it with the hand they use least.

Worst Burglar:
Edward Harold Bell. Ha! I also have to add, would you really find it wise to go breaking into homes when so many people in the state of Texas own guns? Seems like even if she hadn't had it, he still got his butt kicked. One of my favorite UM moments.

Worst Son:
The one who had his friends kill his grandparents (while his mother happened to be on the phone with them) then showed up to the crime scene pretending to be all sad.

And Quite Possible The Worst Scum on UM (hard pick):
Oba Chandler (I don't think explanation is needed)

Worst Parole Board ever?
Probably the people who decided it was ok to let James Donald King get out of jail after serving six years for murdering his wife intentionally in front of her family. And then he of course murdered another woman soon after. That parole board should have been held accountable. I know it's a tough job, but letting a murderer (who killed a defenseless person intentionally) out after six years? They must have been high.

I can only surmise he thought he could get away on the bike quickly enough, out of sight of everyone who might've witnessed the getaway, to a vehicle no one would apparently know he got into in the first place in order to make an undetectable getaway.

She was questioned about it at work and then took off from her parent's home in the middle of the night. I can't remember the name of the embezzler, but the woman who played her was awful.

Lesa Lee?

The worst line to quote in my high school religion class was from the Tony Alamo case.

"I didn't say Moses, you liar!"

I still laugh when I say it.

I'm talking about Abraham. How dare you come in here and doubt what I say. You sorry weasel What have you been doing when theh rest of us are reading our Bibles?

The sorry weasel comment cracks me up every time.

Yeah, that one's way up there for sure.

Worst BSer: Dave Davis.

Dave Davis's own parents destroyed his made-up backstory (that he was wealthy, had served in the military, etc).

The girl who got hit with a 2x4 in the back of the head from the back of an unidentified white pickup truck while riding on the back of her boyfriends motorcycle, leaving her permanently brain damaged. I'll never forget the interview with her.

That segment about Jenny Pratt has always made me garner sympathy towards her plight. She truly was a victim or time, place, and association.

Probably the saddest thing I've ever seen. I only saw that episode once and it was probably 10 years ago now, but the impression it left on me was so profound I'm still traumatized by what happened to that poor girl. Crazy to think she's almost a middle aged woman now. Wonder how she's doing after all this time?

Ah yes. The Jenny Pratt case is quite....complicated. Lets just say it involves a psycho who likes to go on the web...so to speak. You can find more info in the boards. Pretty infamous.

Don't know if this qualifies as worst police sketch but ...

The computer-generated age progressed police composite photo of Donald Eugene Webb kinda looks like Robert Stack's alcoholic not so distant cousin. Check it out, it's on volume 2.
I always thought the mugshot of the blind river killer was pretty bad too. interestingly the mugshot doesn't necessarily look like Ronald west or does it?

yeah there was a person posting on here from the Oceanside/Encinitas/Carlsbad area claiming to know all the inside details of the pratt case yet would say nothing about it to anyone. weird...

I know who you're talking about but I can't remember his name. He was the boyfriend driving the motorcycle. I think he even made some comments about Unsolved Mysteries on YouTube years afterwards. He seemed like some kind of drugged up nut. I agree that was a horrible story and I feel so bad for Jenny.

Another one I thought was just horrible were the girls on the boat who were hit by the other boat and the one girl had her face torn off by the boats motor. They made it seem as though the people who had hit them were well aware that they had done serious damage and ignored their pleas to call for help, just hooked up their boat and drove away. I still can't believe they never got any information about that one. My personal theory is that there was some hanky panky going on with the couple that hit the girls' boat that caused the driver to be more than a little distracted, to put it that way. But to just leave them for dead was really cold.

Curtis Croft is the first one.

Stephanie Booker is the second. What happened to her was horrible, but I think the plastic surgeons did an absolutely remarkable job on her. The case would have been a lot worse if she had been left hideously deformed.

I wouldn't know, I don't care to follow his activities.

I know I don't, since I believe he knows who did the 2X4 deal. Seems like he's in a position of being mum and afraid. I had friends like that; they stopped being "friends" soon after. I know teenagers and loyalty don't have to be 100%, but this guy (at least on the "Unsolved Mysteries" segment) acted like this was an oopsie.
