Tom Cruise refuses to star alongside best friend Will Smith, because he fears he'll be upstaged - according to reports.

The pair are close pals and frequently speak of plans to act together - but sources tell the National Enquirer Cruise is terrified a collaboration would kill his career.

The insider claims Cruise backs down over every script Smith sends him and never returns the offer.

The source says, "Tom's a great guy, but he sees Will as competition - a movie like I Am Legend is the kind of role Tom used to get offered first. The feeling is that Tom fears he'll suffer by comparison if he acts alongside Will. He hasn't really worked with another strong male lead since Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man."

The source insists Smith doesn't care: "He knows how Tom is, and it's not going to end their friendship if they never appear on screen together."

And he WOULD be upstaged too. Good to know that Tom at least has some lucidity left in him to know it wouldn't be hard to upstage him these days.

What a joke. Insiders, unnamed sources tell The Enquirer. Good Lord.

Tom Cruise may be different or whatever in his personal life, but he can act. I doubt Smith is intimidating him.

considering his last movie co-starred Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, two established legends in the business with resumes that put Tom's to shame, why would he be so worried about working alongside Smith?

^ Well, Will Smith does have two Oscar nominations (for Ali and Pursuit of Happyness) to his credit, so he's not a total hack.

I know that, I was actually seriously pissed off he lost last year since he totally had the Oscar in the bag (because I hate his series doesn't mean I'll refuse to see any movie he's in), but when your last movie boasts Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, two actors when combined have almost 80 years in the biz and are regarded as two of the greatest living actors around, why would you be afraid of being upstaged by Will Smith when you just worked with Streep and Redford? It's like someone working with DeNiro but being afraid of being upstaged by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is a great actor too, but hasn't been around nearly as long as DeNiro has.

They're both A-List actors, with an edge to Cruise. He's had an amazing career, and Smith is doing great himself. I just don't believe that Cruise is afraid of being upstaged by Smith. I think it's BS.

I agree. Tom definately helped get Nicole in the door in America (she was a huge teen idol in the 80's in Australia) but it was Nicole's talent the kept her around. I always thought he held her back a bit, notice that as soon as they split up was when Nicole really became a Julia-league style star.

I knew Nicole was going to become a huge star on her own when I saw "To Die For", she was phenomenal in that movie

I once read that tom made her not to wear high heels whenever they were at premiers etc. because he is short.
She towered over him anyway.

that movie really kick started her career and catapulted her into a-list status. tom cruise comes across as a control freak. if his marriage with nicole had continued then she would've endured tom's scientology crap. even though they were one of the most famous hollywood couples back in the 90s, the truth was tom was the successful one, and of whom had hit after hit, nicole meanwhile wasn't having that much success with her career but since her split, she has become a huge star on her own, has become more confident, more assertive and more outspoken and is no longer in the shadows of her ex, tom

I do think that Nicole was a much stronger person than Katie, but at the same time, that is probably why Tom and the church worked so much harder on Katie. Nicole never sold out her religious beliefs to become a $cientologist for Tom. I am glad that she had the backbone to stand up to Tom and say that she was raising the kids Catholic instead of Scientologist. Granted, I am not the biggest fan of organized religion period but Scientology is a huge money-making scam and most of it is hilarious. I think meds can be a bad thing if overdone (one of my closest friends' mother lost her life over taking too many pills one night), but I do think some people need them, just in moderation.

I love how Nicole carried herself after the separation and subsequent divorce. She never said a bad thing abt Tom. And I can't get it out of my head how he was so cruel as to respond to some interviewer with the response, "She knows what she did" when asked why his marriage to Nicole was over. BASTARD! Keep your mouth shut, you share children with that lady.

I actually heard the opposite. Nicole was on Leno or Lettermen (can't remember which) and she was asked about it. She said it never bothered him at all, but it was she that just decided to go with lower shoes when she was with him (I know myself, I'm the exact same height as my husband and he loved me in heels, but it felt weird for ME).

Anyway, you see pics of him and Katie together and she's in very high heels often. I don't think it's an issue.

Some could criticize Will and Jada for wearing "cutsie" matching or coordinating outfits to functions. Personally I think it's nice. I'll bet though if Tom and Katie did that people would be all over him for controlling her. I think they seem to have a very happy, healthy marriage and look good together. Katie has really grown into a woman since being with him.

that'a one of the great things about nicole- say what you like about her films or her as an actress, but as a human being, she is a great example of someone who remains true to her roots and not get obssessed with fame. she's so modest and down to earth

I only read about that, so it is most probably not true then if you saw an interview with her saying otherwise.

Not defending Tom's actions in the past couple of years, but when you think about it, it's basically that way for just about everyone in Hollyweird these days. The media has gone absolutely balistic with their tabloid crap.

I stopped buying fashion mags in the early 90s because of their fantasy world of what women should look like (hell, when they start airbrushing and digitially "fixing" Faith Hill you know there's something wrong). They made the average female feel like dirt because they weren't the same size or couldn't begin to afford the stuff you see in those things.

I'm now the same with tabloids (not that I ever bought anything other than People). I take most of these stories with a grain of salt now until they're proven to be true. It's like the stupid rumour with Richard Gere all these years - if that guy is gay, then he deserves a lifetime Oscar for going into his 50s now married, with children when he doesn't have to. His leading man days were over long ago and he could have come out by now. (Really, the same with Tom when you think of it - rumours he was gay, now he's a control freak with Katie - I'm surprised nobody's come up with hermaphridyte for him yet). ;)

the so called 'celebrity' culture that we now have is just out of control and obssessive, i think the large majority of a-list celebs that we have today are overhyped, overrated, arrogant and often overpaid egos, who think they are that talented and of whom think they deserve the plaudits that they get.

which is why the celebs that i tend to admire or like are underrated but of whom have real talent and whose antics aren't in the press 24/7

Everything I read states that their kids are being raised as Scientologists. Cruise broke Nicole's heart when he dumped her. She stated as recently as last year in an interview that she still loves him. She's a very gracious person.
