"M" = "The Mop", A.K.A Bertram Bristol, Cathy's old schoolmate turned Pop Star who Patty promised to get for the prom.

"N" for Nineteen-Sixty-Three (1963)... the all-important year "The Patty Duke Show" debuted, beginning its three-season run on ABC Network!

O=Obnoxious=for sometimes obnoxious younger brother Ross

"P" for "Pontiac"... the Lane family car (at least for the first two seasons) appears to be a Pontiac. We see it in the garage in two episodes, "Patty, the Organizer" and "The Daughter Bit." Looks like a '64 or '65 Pontiac.

"Q" = Quirky: Patty certainly was quirky, being a girl of many whims, unable to resist their siren's call, which often led to disaster.

"R" for "Rita"... as in, actress Rita McLaughlin, our somewhat unsung gal who contributed mightily to "The Patty Duke Show," by appearing as Patty's backside body-double!

"S" = "Sonnets from the Portuguese", the book that Patty and her pen-pal would carry to identify each other when they met in person.

"T" for "Tell Me Mama".... that song that Patty sings in the amusing episode "The Wedding Anniversary Caper." Ross really puts Patty in a bind in that one!

U=Upper hand in arguments, which Cathy almost alwyas had.

"V" for Vinton, Bobby.... who made a rare appearance acting, as the guest-star in "Patty and the Newspaper Game," as the young newsman whom Martin mistakenly thinks is out to take his editorial job.

"W" = Washing dishes, which Cathy ended up doing a lot when Patty would flip her two-headed "Good Luck" coin. (In the episode where Patty took an automated IQ test.)

"X" for "ex-boyfriend," which is what Richard occasionally finds himself as, after a tiff with Patty. A good example being in the episode "Patty and the Cut-Rate Casanova."

Y=Younger brother Ross

"Z" for "zzzzzzz" ... in other words, 'snoozing,' which leads to sitcom-style dream sequences, as in Cathy dreaming she has a date with Frankie Avalon, or Patty dreaming that she is a brave courtroom witness testifying against a gangster.

"B" = "The Three B's", "Bach, Beethoven and...'Lenny' Bernstein?" (from "Patty Pits Wits, Two Brit Hits") Not quite, Patty...

"C" = "cake." .... Warning, repeat, warning. Any persons sighting one "Patricia Lane" entering a kitchen with intent to bake a banana sponge cake, please contact the Brooklyn Heights civil-defense authorities and take cover immediately!

D=Drama=something you could always depend upon Patty for

"E" = Eating...Richard was always eating something, especially apples.

"F" for "flu shot" ... it's a mistakenly-given 'flu shot' that leads Patty for the first time (other than in the pilot) to pose as Cathy, as seen in "Double Date."

G=Grammar massacre by Patty

"H" for "The Hammer" .... the silly teen dance craze that's taken over Brooklyn Heights. Even Cathy masters it! Too bad Ross doesn't learn it, as his dancing to the Shindogs two years later in "Partying is Such Sweet Sorrow" is even goofier.

"I" = Ice Cream. Patty, Cathy, Ross and Richard all have a sweet tooth for the popular frozen confectionary served up at "The Shake Shop" (identified as "Leslie's Ice Cream Parlor" on the window in Season Three episodes).

"J" for "The Jimmy Dean Show".... whose song contest gets Patty and Cathy in big-time hot water. Great, great episode!

"K" = "Kit-Kat", what Cathy's father Kenneth calls her.

L for Lane

M=Mixing up the two cousins, when they decide to "be" each other--creating confusion and madcap antics for all.

"N" for "Nicki" ... the little girl who has a crush on Ross, in season-one.

"O" = Opera. Cathy and her father went to the opera quite often when Cathy lived in Scotland, as she told Patty in the flashback episode at the end of season one.

"P" = "princess phone" ... the style of telephone that Patty and Cathy have upstairs in their room. a real iconic fixture of the 60s!

Q=Quarrelsome=Mr. Castle, at times.

R = Richard, Patty's on-and-off steady boyfriend.

"S" for "staircase" ... we have the recurring visual imagery of Patty/Cathy ascending or descending the staircase all the time, in the openings, closings, and episodes proper. Can't envision TPDS without it!

"Thirty" -- Martin explains to Natalie that journalists write "30" to designate the end of articles

"U" for "Uncle Jed" ... we covered Uncle Martin and Uncle Kenneth, but not dottering, old Uncle Jed, all portrayed by Schallert. Can't leave him out. Hmm, let's be grateful nobody got the idea to put Schallert in drag and have him portray an aunt. That's something I don't think I'd want to see!

V=Vivacious=That's our Patty!

W = Wacky. Many third season episodes tried too hard to be "wacky".

"X" for "x-rays"... when Martin takes a fall and injures his ankle in "Patty, the Candy Striper," the doctor orders him to the hospital so he can take x-rays.

Y=Yearning to see his "Kit Kat" on Xmas = Kenneth Lane

"Z" for "zigzag" .... on certain occasions, like in "Double Date," Patty finds herself zigzagging back and forth between her own identity and that of Cathy's. Chaos ensues!

"A" = Aggrivation. Patty caused a lot of aggrivation for her family and friends with her impulsiveness.

"B" for "baby sitting" .... another one of Patty's business ventures, which doesn't go quite as swimmingly as she expects!

"C" = Cathy, who's lived most everywhere, from Zanzibar to Barclay Square...

"D" for "door-to-door salesladies" .... Knock, knock. Anyone here in the market for a Magic Midget Vacuum Cleaner? Allow me to give a demonstration...

"E" = Electricity, something the pioneers didn't have, so neither did Pioneer Patty after making a rather hastily thought-out bet.

"F" for "Funny Little Butterflies," which Patty charmingly sings, and is arguably the high point of Season Three.

G = Generating shares = Patty when she starts her own company LOL

"H" = Hairstyles: Patty and Cathy had more distinctive hairstyles in Seasons 2 and 3 (possibly so viewers could tell the two lookalike cousins apart?).

I=Impossible little brother Ross

J for "Japanese dinner" .... Patty, Cathy and Nat serve up a Japanese-style dinner in a misguided effort to impress Ross' baseball coach.

"K" is for the kittens Ross and Patty bought from Ralphie ("American", not Persian cats).

L = "Letters" .... Letters are a big part of Cathy's life: Always writing letters to her father overseas, and by the same token, receiving them from him.

"M" = Money. Patty always seems to need more money than she has, often hitting up Poppo for a raise in her allowance, or trying to borrow money from Ross or Cathy.

N=Natalie Lane

"O" for O'Keefe, Paul .... as Ross, always armed with a sarcastic retort. Or even worse, armed with a tape-recorder. Watch out, Patty! But when the chips are really down, he's with ya.

"P" = Psychic. Patty thought that she was psychic in the last episode of this series.

"Q" for "quandary" ... the plots often put Patty in quite a quandary, like what to do after she thinks she's a witness to a crime, or what to do to find a big-name celebrity for the prom, etc.

R = Ross

"S" for "shake shop" ... where plans are hatched, and ice-cream is consumed. And Patty even took a job there once.

"T" = Teen-ager. Of course, it's hard to forget Patty's book, "I Was A Teen-age Teen-ager", described by Martin as a combination of Salinger and Superman, but ungrammatical. Or how Patty nearly got stuck having to pay a vanity press publisher to have her book published.

"U" for "undercover" ... sometimes Patty finds a sneaky need to alter her appearance and go 'undercover' as Cathy, like when she wanted to check out Cousin Betsy's nefarious intentions, or to test Richard's devotion.

V=Vivacious=Patty!

Week, one -- Richard was to be the Lanes' house guest for one week

"X" = "X-mas" (There are only so many X words that have anything to do with "The Patty Duke Show"...) Patty broke the fourth wall only once to wish her viewers a Merry X-mas (and comment on the only "cliffhanger" ending in the series). It makes you wonder if Cathy would have asked, "Patty, who are you talking to?"
"Oh, the people watching us on TV."
"Sure, Patty...watching us on TV...I think maybe you've had a bit too much egg nog tonight..."

Y=Younger brother (cousin) Ross

"Z" for "zero confidence" ... Ross has 'zero confidence' in himself when he's slated for his first date, with little Nicki. Luckily, Patty and the family help him out!

"A" = "Angles". According to Richard, Patty "usually has more angles than Sgt. Bilko!"

"B" for "Betsy" ... the scheming cousin "Betsy" who causes quite a stir with her visit to the Lane household, in that memorable 2nd-season episode. Too bad her character never made a follow-up appearance. But I guess the blonde chick who played her was unavailable.

C=Cousins that walk alike, talk alike - you could lose your mind - with cousins that are two of a kind! :lol:

"D" for "David Doyle" ... who appeared as Richard's father (and was quite funny in the role, too). Over a decade before Charlie and his Angels gave him public fame.

E=Energetic=Patty

"F" for "folk singer" .... Pittsburg Patty, appearing nightly at the Pink Percolater coffeehouse! Come see her take orders, bus trays, sweep floors... and maybe, just maybe, hear her sing a tune!

G=Good Grades=Cathy's speciality but surely not Patty's

"H" for "horoscope" .... reading horoscopes, another one of Patty's get-rich-quick ventures; also, the title of said episode as well.

I=Insane IDEAS a la Patty

J = Jam: "The Jam of the Kings and The King of the Jams", the slogan for "Mother Patty's Preserves" (which DID create quite a jam for Patty and her stockholders!).

"K" for "Knock before entering!" .... which is what Patty is ALWAYS having to tell Ross, reprimanding him for barging into her room.

L = Laugh Track. The worst part of ANY sitcom, including The Patty Duke Show. It very obviously wasn't filmed before a live studio audience (as much as we all might wish to believe that Patty and Cathy were REALLY two separate people).

"M" for "minuet" ... the theme-song kindly informs us that "Cathy just adores a minuet!"

"N" = Nigel. Half of the British rock duo "Nigel and Patrick" (a.k.a. Chad and Jeremy) that seems to hang around in empty rooms in high school radio stations. (Maybe they liked Cathy's classical music show?)

"O" for "opposites" .... Patty and Cathy are opposites, in terms of personalities and tastes. Different as night and day? You be the judge.

P=Principal at Patty's H.S. is sure not her "pal"

"Q" for "quiet" ... as in 'keeping quiet.' Can Patty keep quiet and not utter a word for 72 hours straight? Poppo bets her she can't, in "Patty, the Chatterbox." Which luckily, has a happier ending than when a Twilight Zone episode chartered the same theme (in the episode "The Silence").

R = Racer. Patty and Cathy built Ross a soap-box racer in "Patty the Master Builder". (Too bad he didn't want one!)

"S" for "Selby" ... as in, Mrs. Selby's School for Models, where Patty learns that 'ladies speak softly.' Oh, and that 'Mona Lisa smile' ... yipe!

T=Thesbian Patty, in ep where Sal Mineo guests

"U" for "upstairs" .... what's upstairs? Patty and Cathy's room, where one can find Patty spinning some records on her phonograph (hopefully not that grating Binky Bristol song again), and Cathy busily sewing a dress she's making.

V=Vanquished in her (Patty) ploy to get to Boston to see Kip (Mr. & Mrs. Lane use some psychology of their own.)

W = "WWDC", which stands for the "World Wide Dress Company", and not "Women's White Dresses Cleaned", or "Why Worry, Desperate Centipede?".

"X" for "xerox copy" ... Wait a second. Look at Patty. Then look at Cathy. Gosh, they sure look alike. It's almost like one could be a 'xerox copy' of the other. But, I'd better not spend too much time pondering all this, since the theme-song warns I might... "lose my mind!"

Y= is for 'Yelling" by J.R. Castle

"Z" for "Zambisi" ... the African natives from whom Cathy learned that tribal dance from, along with the fine art of shrinking heads. Uh, well, I might be a little mistaken on that latter point, but she definately learned that dance from them, as shown in the episode "How to Be Popular."

A = A. (Uh, yeah...can't argue with that logic...but bear with me here, I'm going somewhere with this...)
A's are a grade Cathy got a lot of, but Patty...not so much.

B=A bad grade for Cathy but a GREAT one for Patty

"C" for "coo-coo!" ... one of Patty's favorite little sayings. For example, were someone to tell Patty Lane that 45 years in the future, some folks were conducting a wacky "A to Z" game in some mysterious locale known as cyberspace, she would react by tilting her head, raising her eyebrows, and saying ... "like, coo-coo!"

"D" = "Dating" Many storylines on The Patty Duke Show revolve around dating. Patty always seemed to have a date, but Cathy...not as many. But don't feel bad for Cathy...she had a family that loved her, and always had Patty to keep her company. :)

"E" for "executive".... in all of Patty's wild and varied business ventures, from share-selling to dress-making, she manages to place herself in executive position. She always takes charge. The end-results? Somewhat iffy, but you can never fault her effort!

"F" = Frankie Avalon. Cathy dreamed of a date with him in season one, and he tended to her twisted ankle (outside of a dream sequence) in season three.

G=Great dad=Martin Lane imo

"H" for "hair curlers" ... Ross finds that putting Patty's hair curlers on his tv-set's antennea helps with the reception. But, boy, does it steam Patty up when she learns he's swiped them!

I = Ideas. Patty never seems to run out of new ideas...although I'm sure that Cathy (and the rest of the Lane family as well as Richard) wishes she would sometimes...

"J" for "John McGiver" ... the familiar character-actor who played JR, Martin's boss in the first season. He wasn't around by the second-season, but there was good reason: He was actually busy starring in his 'own' sitcom, entitled "Many Happy Returns," where he played the head of a big store's complaint department.
