View Full Version : Travolta dropped from Dallas movie
waichingliu81 12-17-2007, 04:59 PM By WENN world entertainment news - Monday, December 17 01:20 pm
John Travolta has been dropped from the new Dallas movie, despite having been attached to the project for more than two years.
Travolta - who had been cast as oil tycoon villain J.R. Ewing in the film adaptation of the 1980s TV soap - was "let go about two weeks ago", according to U.S. reports.
A source tells the New York Post's gossip column PageSix, "John was given a nice seven-figure 'gift' to go away quietly. He also got five family members roles in the movie, and they aren't going to be in it now, either."
And while a friend of Travolta has confirmed the star's non-involvement, he disputes rumours the Grease star was "paid off" to leave the project.
The pal says, "He is not doing the movie. They've gone in a different direction than was originally intended. I don't know about any 'gift,' and I don't think the family member thing is correct."
Travolta is not the only star to have been allegedly dropped from the project. The first major upheaval occurred last year when Shirley MacLaine, who was to play Miss Ellie, Luke Wilson (Bobby Ewing) and Jennifer Lopez (Sue Ellen) were dropped from the cast. Meg Ryan and Matthew McConaughey's names were then brought up, but neither was signed.
Director Robert Luketic was also rumoured to have been let go in favour of Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, and the budget was downsized from an original GBP32.5 million to "something way less," according to sources.
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox declined to comment.

Dean Winchester 12-17-2007, 05:01 PM he was the only thing that sounded decent about that movie

looks like this remake is going to flop in the box office. i've never been a fan of the show myself though

No, just about John Travolta being dropped.
Janice 12-17-2007, 10:26 PM Wonder what the deal is there. He'd make a great J.R. I think they should give Ray Liotta's agent a call, even George Clooney.
MrCleveland 12-17-2007, 10:34 PM No wonder the writers are on strike. Making remakes, sequels, and direct-to-video crap really makes them seem to be dull.

Nothing Ewing: Dallas Movie Drops Travolta
John Travolta by Jeff Vespa/WireImage.comAttached to the big-screen adaptation of Dallas for more than two years, John Travolta has been released from the role of J.R Ewing and "given a nice seven-figure 'gift' to go away quietly," a source tells Page Six. A pal of the former Vinnie Barbarino confirms the news, saying the film's producers "have gone in a different direction than was originally intended."
What sort of different direction? Originally envisioned as a dramedy, the talk is that Dallas will now be a "comedic, behind-the-scenes" "show-within-a-show" a la Bewitched, and that Ben Stiller has been offered J.R.'s 10-gallon hat. Wow, there is just so much wrong with that previous sentence.
This movie went from bad to worst. I never thought Travolta was the right choice ( I wanted Bruce Willis) but Travolta is 100 times better than Stiller. This movie is going to be a joke. :ohno:

You and so many others know me too well. ;)
John would have been a great J.R.  However, my understanding is that John wanted the movie to stick to how the actual show was. The producers of this movie are taking it elsewhere and it is infuriating the DALLAS fans (like me). I say, LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! DON'T BOTHER MAKING THE DAMN MOVIE.

They're going to try to make it like that Bewitched movie now....a show within a show. :ohno:
catlover79 12-17-2007, 11:41 PM They're going to try to make it like that Bewitched movie now....a show within a show. :ohno:
The Bewitched movie was a MAJOR disappointment. Keep those behind-the-scenes things for those crappy TV movies.

God, that is so stupid. Can't those people see how horrible remakes have been lately? I guess they think that us DALLAS fans love the show so much, we'd see any movie abt it. Which is totally wrong. There is no DALLAS fan that I know of or have spoken to, who wants to see this movie made.

I didn't even watch the Bewitched movie...same with the Dukes of Hazzard. They're just using the names of classic tv shows to get the fans to show up but they don't care if they make a good movie or not. Just recently they announced they're going to make a politically corect version of the A-Team.

A POLITICALLY CORRECT version of the A-Team!?!? puke:

I don't think I'm going to watch it. In the real beginning I was for it. It sounded like David Jacobs was going to be involved with it and it was going to be done straight. But the more that they've tinkered with the idea, everyone can see this is going to be a major flop. It's like the studio is making fun of Dallas fans.

Seems like they don't care at all abt the fans. More like a bunch of morons who want to add big names to a picture that is going to flop. I never would see this movie. :snob:

Good lawd. ohno:
Dean Winchester 12-18-2007, 05:01 AM I personally enjoyed the Bewitched movie, I thought it was a cute comedy. However, I'm not a hardcore fan of the original series so if I was, I probably would've sung a different tune
comedyfreak 12-18-2007, 10:46 AM When are they going to learn to not mess with a classic.
catlover79 12-18-2007, 11:59 AM With or without Travolta, the movie looks like a joke. They'd be better off scrapping the entire project!
waichingliu81 12-18-2007, 01:49 PM A POLITICALLY CORRECT version of the A-Team!?!? puke:
well apparently, they want it based in the middle east and for it reflect social issues, which sounds stupid
waichingliu81 12-18-2007, 01:50 PM the only reason there are all these damn remakes is because writers are too lazy to write new scripts and new ideas and so they'd rehash the original and put it out as a follow-up or sequel. plus, its a cheap way of making big bucks
waichingliu81 12-18-2007, 01:53 PM When are they going to learn to not mess with a classic.
probably by coming up with decent material and good films that we like to watch, instead of taking something which was great in the first place and turning into second grade crapola
waichingliu81 12-18-2007, 01:56 PM john travolta is a legend in his own right. he didn't need to star in this film to justify his worth as an actor and performer because he delivers almost all of the time. with a CV as impressive as saturday night fever, grease, pulp fiction and hairspray to his name, who cares about the remake of dallas?
Dean Winchester 12-18-2007, 03:27 PM granted, he may be getting up there in age, but if they're gonna revisit Dallas, why not do it with Hagman, Duffy, Principal, etc...? Enough of the cast is still alive (granted, the mother has died since, but she left the show before the finale anyways) that they could just do another reunion movie

Victoria wouldn't be a part of it. She left the character of Pam when she left the show.

didn't she appear in a reunion movie several years back? Or am I confusing her with someone else?
catlover79 12-18-2007, 04:33 PM didn't she appear in a reunion movie several years back? Or am I confusing her with someone else?
I think she was in the Return to Southfork retrospective a year or so ago. However, she just appeared as herself, not in character as Pam. Am I correct here?
Dean Winchester 12-18-2007, 05:04 PM you guys are right, I checked, it was Linda Grey who left the show but yet returned for the reunion movies. Did Victoria hate the show typecasting her or something?
eltonfan80 12-18-2007, 05:30 PM With or without Travolta, the movie looks like a joke. They'd be better off scrapping the entire project!
i hope they don't make it cuase if they do it's going to suck big time
Dean Winchester 12-18-2007, 05:34 PM has there really been a decent movie adaptation of an old tv series that wasn't a "direct" adaptation (like Star Trek or X-Files or the upcoming Sex And The City, where the cast returns)? The only one I really enjoyed was the Brady Bunch movie because I thought it was absolutely hysterical, plus I never was really a fan of the series.
catlover79 12-18-2007, 05:36 PM The Brady Bunch Movie was really a satire of the TV series, and I agree - it was hilarious. The sequel, on the other hand, was not so good.
Yeah, they just need to scrap this movie. As time went on, they dropped the idea of an epic remake in order to turn it into some sort of cheap comedy. "Dallas," a cheap comedy. In a twisted way, it would sooo work with "Dynasty," definitely not with big D.
Ireneparalegal 12-25-2007, 02:32 AM I think she was in the Return to Southfork retrospective a year or so ago. However, she just appeared as herself, not in character as Pam. Am I correct here?
Yes you are.
Victoria no longer wanted anything to do with the Pam character. It really hurt the show.

I agree. Also the way they wrote Pam out of the show. They sort of left her in limbo hoping Victoria would return.
Ireneparalegal 12-26-2007, 12:07 AM I agree. Also the way they wrote Pam out of the show. They sort of left her in limbo hoping Victoria would return.
Yep. They did that because of all that fiasco with the whole Bobby died storyline and the infamous "dream season" where we were to forget everything that happened.
