View Full Version : Lisa Bonet appreciation thread
Dean Winchester 12-16-2007, 12:35 AM Did anyone else out there love her as much as I did? When I was a kid, I thought there were very few people who were cooler than her. The way she completely presented herself as a freespirit and completely did her own thing is something I always admire and I think it totally worked for her in the late 80's/early 90's. I remember how cool it was watching the 89-90 season and each week Lisa found another haircut to sport, it was almost like how Madonna used to change her look each video back in those days. I will admit I actually quit watching Cosby in first run for good when she was fired for the second time (for good). Whether she goes by Bonet or Liliquoi Moon, I'll always be interested when she does something new.

I really liked her on The Cosby Show, especially in the early seasons. She was obvious the greatest of the 5 children, and probably the best actor of them all. But when she spun off to A Different World, and then got pregnant, I lost a lot of respect for her. She was given her own show, and was getting a lot of praise for it, then gets pregnant.
But when she came back to The Cosby Show, she was still a great actress, and I was sorry to see her go again by the eighth season. She just made have to watch Olivia a little funner-LOL

Yeah she was the only huxtable daughter I liked watching. Never liked Sondra or Vanessa
JulieSomoski 12-20-2007, 05:23 PM Yeah she was the only huxtable daughter I liked watching. Never liked Sondra or Vanessa
Yeah, never cared for those 2 much. Sondra was way too intellectual and boring for me, and Vanessa was always just a background character anyways.
Scoobiedoo30 12-20-2007, 09:20 PM Lisa Bonet was the best Actress on The CXosby Show/ A Diffrent World
gidgetgrape 12-20-2007, 10:01 PM OMG! I was a huge fan of hers as a kid. She had the best clothes, makeup, etc.,. She seemed to always be on the cutting edge. I lost interest in her when she went for the more natural look and lifestyle. Not my kind of thing at all. I remember when she married Lenny Kravitz and everybody was like, "Why is she marrying that loser?" because he was an unknown. I really think doing the nude scenes in Angel Heart squashed her career. At the time, I don't think audiences (or Bill Cosby) were ready for her to be so adult. She was married for a little over a year when Zoe was born so I don't think that was a big deal.
Furienna 12-23-2007, 08:15 AM Yeah, never cared for those 2 much. Sondra was way too intellectual and boring for me, and Vanessa was always just a background character anyways.
Too intellectual, huh? Now, that's my kind of people. However, I think Sondra was too much like her mother. No, really, she was becoming worse than her mother! And Vanessa could be really interesting too. But of course, this thread is about Denise, and I liked her too, of course.
JulieSomoski 12-25-2007, 01:58 PM Too intellectual, huh? Now, that's my kind of people. However, I think Sondra was too much like her mother. No, really, she was becoming worse than her mother! That's a good way to put Sondra - too much like her mother. We never saw much of her, but when we did, it was boring. The only episode where she was "unleashed" was when she thinks her mother is stealing her kids away from her. Denise, on the other hand, was always fun to watch, no matter what scene she was in.
Furienna 12-25-2007, 02:13 PM And Sondra was the only one, who ever made Claire shut up. That's why I think she will be even worse.
Dean Winchester 12-25-2007, 03:19 PM I really liked her on The Cosby Show, especially in the early seasons. She was obvious the greatest of the 5 children, and probably the best actor of them all. But when she spun off to A Different World, and then got pregnant, I lost a lot of respect for her. She was given her own show, and was getting a lot of praise for it, then gets pregnant.

I don't know if I truly agree with you tho. Lisa was a grown woman and she was already married to Lenny Kravitz and then got pregnant after a year of marriage. Granted, it might not have been for the best interest for her show but I think she was already an adult and married, so it wasn't exactly like the Jamie Lynn Spears thing going on now.
I honestly think Bill could've kept her on ADW by filming a lot of episodes at once and putting Denise in loose-fitting clothes and whatever. Sarah Jessica Parker was already six months pregnant during the season 5 finale of Sex And The City and they had her done up so well that you didn't even notice she was with child.
ThomasE 12-25-2007, 04:15 PM Was she already married to Lenny? Did not know that. She should have used a bit more wisdom when it came to the situation. She had some responsibility on her shoulders. I wish that she had stayed with ADW. She was my favorite Huxtable child and was the funniest during season two and then season six.
gidgetgrape 12-25-2007, 04:36 PM Was she already married to Lenny? Did not know that.
According to imdb.com, she married Lenny on Nov. 16, 1987. Zoe was born December 1, 1988.

She seemed too stuffy, even for an older sister and an Ivy Leaguer. I can't imagine her hanging out with Theo and her sisters.

Okay. Didn't know. I wished that she had exercised more caution. Lisa working with Debbie Allen would have been a great thing for the show. I still blame Anne Beatts for season one and not Lisa!
ThomasE 12-25-2007, 04:41 PM She seemed too stuffy, even for an older sister and an Ivy Leaguer. I can't imagine her hanging out with Theo and her sisters.
I can. Especially during the first two seasons, later down the line she kinda matured being married and all and having two kids.
JulieSomoski 12-26-2007, 06:10 PM Was she already married to Lenny? Did not know that. She should have used a bit more wisdom when it came to the situation. She had some responsibility on her shoulders. I wish that she had stayed with ADW. She was my favorite Huxtable child and was the funniest during season two and then season six.
Exactly. She handled the situation very irresponsibly. Here Bill was kind enough to create a spinoff show for her, and she gets pregnant. If she was more responsible, she could have held off her pregnancy. Then Bill is kind enough again to let her come back to the Cosby Show, and she leaves again on her own after season 7.
Dean Winchester 12-26-2007, 11:37 PM well, she was 21 years old at the time, she was an adult and a wife. She could've gotten pregnant and had it covered. Julia Louis-Dreyfus went through two pregnancies on Seinfeld and even in reruns, you never could tell which seasons (it was season 3 and season 8). Even on Cosby itself, Phylicia was pregnant for much of the third season and yet they got away without giving the Huxtables a new baby. When it comes to certain things, such as having a baby, your personal life is more important than your professional life. Considering Denise had become rather bohemian in the way she dressed and her personality, putting loose fitting clothes on her would've worked perfectly
Furienna 12-27-2007, 08:08 AM I don't think she was "irresponsible" either. She was married after all.

I guess you are right, especially with the Phylicia point. She was pregnant, and even though you could tell she was pregnant, they got away with every saying anything about it on the show.
I still believe, though, that when it came to her career on the show, she was very irresponsible about the way she handled herself. Her pregnancy may not be the main picture, but those nude pictures she had taken are. Why the hell would she do that? All it did was jeopardized his career . . . Bill was furious when he found out about that, after all he'd done for that child.
Furienna 12-27-2007, 07:50 PM The nude pictures were stupid, yes. Still not a reason to fire her from the show though.
mikeny99 01-09-2008, 07:50 PM The only thing that got me was the clothes. Being in school in the 80s the clothes were so bad. The show was full of 80s clothing. It just didn't work.
I loved the girls haircuts though. The long curl hair was great. We don't see that anymore. That was the best thing about the 80s style. I think the guys dressed better but even still.
She was fun to watch on the show. She got better as the show went on.
isiahthomas 01-11-2008, 06:03 PM I was a fan of Lisa's too back in the day because she was cute but when she did Angel Heart movie with Mickey Rourke and Robert Deniro, that ruined her career. She should've listened to Bill and not do the movie. I never saw the movie because it looks like a horror film to me and i don't watch horror films. She looked really bad in Biker Boys movie with Larry Fishburne, Derek Luke, Meagan Good. I bet she was happy to be reunited with Kadeem Hardison in that movie. She didn't look too bad in Enemy Of The State movie with Will Smith.
strokes_cosbyfan 01-15-2008, 10:47 PM I'm a fan of Lisa and her character Denise. I always found the episodes more fun when Denise was on
friendsfan77 02-15-2008, 03:23 PM I like Denise's character as well and while I liked ADW more when Debbie Allen took over, I kinda wish she stayed because I really liked her on that.

I agree, she was cool. I kinda lost interest when she left. Then I got hooked on a Different World.

Lack of talent, stupidity, and a bad attitude can sometimes damage your career.
by: Anonymous reply 6 12/29/2013 @ 11:48AM
Because she shot herself in the foot. Bill Cosby realized how popular she was on The Cosby Show, and gave her a damn spin-off show. That didn't go well (I think she starred in that trashy Angel Heart movie) but Bill STILL put up with her and he put her back on The Cosby Show. From what I have heard, her attitude problems continued, so she was written off of The Cosby Show. It's all her own doing. If she had just done what she was paid to do, maybe she would have been able to make it on more TV shows or Hollywood.

A few different reasons:
First of all, as much as I liked Lisa, she truly was a one-note actress. She couldn't play anything other than the free-spirited hippie (like her real life personality).
Second, she didn't play the "Hollywood Game". She didn't kiss ass and did whatever she wanted and said whatever was on her mind. Back then, that was not acceptable, especially for a half black female.
Third, she started getting weird (a la Prince & Lauryn Hill). The whole "I'm so much deeper than everyone else" shtick is a big turnoff.
Fourth, she had her first child too early. I think she was only 21. Not a good time to have a kid if you're trying to get acting roles.

This really covers it all.

As i recall she discovered she was pregnant during the first season of a different world and producers decided to write her off of a different world instead of working around her pregnancy. I always think its bull**** when i hear that writers cant work a pregnancy into a show. There are many ways to shoot around a growing belly like clothes, props and blocking. Different strokes pulled the same stuff with dana plato. Anyway cosby knew where his bread his buttered and decided to do a college dropout story and invited her back. She lasted two more seasons but they never got along. I have never been a bill cosby fan and to lisas credit she never took any gunk off him like calling him mr. cosby and all that nonsense. Think she burned a lotta bridges with the cosby show.

I remember reading in the mags (not just the tabloids but mags like "Us") that she was cray-cray and notoriously difficult to work with. A producer's headache.
To quote Beyonce, if you are going to bring that kind of drama and hassle for everyone else involved, then "don't you ever, for a second, get to thinking you're irreplaceable."
by: Anonymous reply 46 12/30/2013 @ 09:43AM
she was mostly plain ol' cray cray. I remember her going on and on like fiona apple did in the 90's. stuff like, this is all bull**** the business is so phony blahblah
it seemed to me that she ran off with kravitz in an attempt to self-sabotage the momentum she had built up. and yeah was limited in range but so is/was raven simone who played her daughter.
by: Anonymous reply 49 12/30/2013 @ 10:16AM
Beautiful woman, but she wasn't very talented. She murmured all her lines, and was pretty wooden.

Remember her in High Fidelity with John Cusack? She is once again the stoner hippie/rocker girl. Just playing herself. Showcasing her lack of range yet again.
Having said all that, I was obsessed with her in the 80s.

Lisa Bonet also had the misfortune of looking like "a Prince girl" aka mixed/swirly. While quite pretty, Bonet was never as stunning as Vanity, then Vanessa Williams and Pebbles came on the scene and finally Halle Berry came along, leaving Bonet out of luck.
by: Anonymous reply 76 12/31/2013 @ 08:17PM
America loves those mixed looking girls and they loved "Denise" although she, to me, wasn't a very interesting personality. Bonet met and fell in love with Kravitz, got married and had her daughter, which sometimes can take you from pursuing a showbiz career with crazy intensity.
I wouldn't be surprised if Cosby had her blackballed in the industry, since he was so butthurt about her ditching the fame he so wanted for her.

Like Sharon Dorety, she was very talented but absolutely determined to destroy her career. Cosby, who I agree was not a saint, gave her lots of opportunities to succeed in acting despite her attitude. I loved her on A Different World and was sad to see her screw up so bad she had to go. Good thing the show did well without her with the very talented Jasmine Guy as lead.
Lisa Bonet is crazy and unappreciative of the opportunities she has had, she chose not to have a big future in acting with her sorry behavior just like Lindsay Lohan did.
by: Anonymous reply 94 01/01/2014 @ 01:14AM
She's not a great actress, but that hasn't stopped a lot of other people from happening. I really think it was because she just didn't give a ****. And, I guess not giving a **** results in what others have already cited - speaks her mind, difficult to work with, etc. Moreover, once thing started to go south, not giving a **** prevented her from doing anything to remedy the situation.

king of comedy 04-26-2014, 06:38 AM The last thing I saw her in was Enemy of the State. She was good in that.
FuriosityShell 05-15-2014, 06:39 PM When did Bill Cosby ever tell her NOT to do Angel Heart? I'm so sick of people of immediately saying that Lisa was in the hot water with the Cos when she did that movie as if they were there when it happened. Bill Cosby had no problem with her doing Angel Heart. Second, while Lisa was kind of unprofessional with showing up late on set constantly and even skipping episode tapings, I wouldn't say she threw away her career. She really liked acting but she even said once that she didn't plan on doing it forever or for a very long time. In fact, from magazine interviews with her I've read from the late 80s, it seems as if she lost interest in acting after becoming a mother.
ThomasE 05-15-2014, 11:10 PM Furiousity Shell, thank you so much for pointing that out. Bill was fine with Lisa doing the movie. Thank you! We have to make sure we get the facts straight. I saw the interview and Lisa said that Bill was ok with it.
FuriosityShell 05-16-2014, 01:37 AM Exactly ThomasE I don't understand why people immediately jump to the conclusion that they had such a huge feud over her doing the movie, especially when neither Lisa or Bill ever confirmed any of that.
Lisa Bonet was on New Girl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1826940/board/thread/237060218) last night, incidentally, in the middle of all of this stuff regarding Bill Cosby's allegedly inappropriate behavior with women. I really does make you wonder if the real reason (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=lipstick+alley+lisa+bonet+bill+cosby+site:www.lipstickalley.com) for Lisa not wanting anything to do w/ Bill is because she rejected his sexual advances (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000956/board/flat/236358543?p=1).
cleverfun3000 11-19-2014, 06:10 PM http://i.imgur.com/VkqJNez.jpg (http://lunapic.com>)
Yes indeed, Lisa Bonet was actually on New Girl last night and I must say that I am quite surprised that she accepted such a small and inconsquential role. I don't believe her cameo affected the outcome of any of the storylines on that show last night.
isiahthomas 11-20-2014, 04:10 PM Lisa hasn't aged well but when she was young, she was hot. What is New Girl tv show about? What channel does it come on? Her daughter Zoe is hot.
isiahthomas 11-20-2014, 04:14 PM Alright my bad. I thought Bill had a problem with Lisa doing Angel Heart movie. Thanks for confirming that Bill didn't have a problem with her doing the movie.
FuriosityShell 11-21-2014, 08:16 PM Lisa hasn't aged well but when she was young, she was hot. What is New Girl tv show about? What channel does it come on? Her daughter Zoe is hot.
I beg to differ. While I've never watched New Girl, I did see an interview with Lisa about the show. Go on YouTube and look up "lisa bonet new girl" and click the first video that pops up entitled "Sneak Peek: Teachers" and it'll show an interview with her and clips from the episode. She looks stunning in my opinion.

What B-list mostly television actress who’s finally starting to work again is about to reveal that she was raped (http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/ajax.html#page:showThread,13650403,5) by an actor on the show that made her famous back in the day? It might explain her absence whenever the cast of that show reunites.
isiahthomas 11-22-2014, 12:05 PM If Bill Cosby did rape Lisa back in the day, that's messed up. I really hope he didn't do that.
Furienna 11-22-2014, 12:42 PM But if the other allegations are true, who knows? :(
isiahthomas 11-22-2014, 01:42 PM You're probably right. It's possible he could've raped her if that's what Lisa is saying.
isiahthomas 11-22-2014, 02:32 PM I just saw a recent interview with Lisa Bonet on Youtube talking about a movie her husband/actor Jason Momoa directed and she was in it. She still looks good and I was wrong for saying she hasn't aged well. I just don't like how her hair looks.
king of comedy 11-22-2014, 06:42 PM She still looks good. I have lost all respect for Cosby.

FuriosityShell 11-23-2014, 12:53 PM I could be wrong, and I don't even have a Twitter, but I don't think that's Lisa's actual Twitter. She's a very private person and I doubt the account is hers. She and Cree Summer are really close friends, and according to some people, Cree never even tags or mentions that account and the photos on that account aren't very personal, just publicity photos of her.
