Peter Tork was also a musician. Micky Dolenz, in an interview for Richard
Lamparski (the "WHATEVER BECAME OF ...?" book series) stated: "Davy and
I were actors and Mike and Peter were musicians. So Davy and I had to learn
to play music, and Mike and Peter had to learn how to act."

I don't know how the four guys got along off-camera, but they seemed to have a great onscreen chemistry.

Yeah i know Tork was a musician, but, he never struck me as a SERIOUS musician.

Michael Nesmith wrote "Different Drum", which was one of Linda Ronstadt's first hits. Singer/songwriter Paul Williams auditioned for the Monkees, but didn't make the final cut.

I placed a vote for Peter Tork out of sympathy because he hadn't received any votes yet up to this point. And when I stop to think about it, Peter really is my favorite Monkee anyway.

I agree that Mike is a great guitarist and songwriter. I can see why people can relate to him. He could stand up there wit the best guitarists in rock and roll as well.

My quote is from William Shakespeare: If all the world could have seen't, the woe had been universal.

Mike's mother was famous too. She created white-out and Mike also was a pioneer of the creation of that channel known as MTV.

Davy Mickey Peter than Mike, who didn't want a thing to do with any of them til Davy died. How awful that he white-out his past life so completely
and then was a major hypocrite because no one needed white-out anymore
as it is obsolete, and went for the big bucks.

Though I always loved his Arizona and Linda's Different Drum which he wrote.

But Davy is #1 with me.

I can agree that Mickey had the most comedic talent and he could do slapstick and physical comedy better than the rest of them. He was not originally a singer or drummer and I heard that after the producers had them all picked and asked them who will be the drummer, the rest of them backed out leaving Mickey as the one who had to learn drums. Overall his singing voice became the signature sound of The Monkees, mainly because of what became their overall most-known and possibly most-played song, "Take The Last Train To Clarksville."
Davy was talented but still, being the " cutie" of the group, he was mostly thought of as a teen idol.

I myself would think of it as who was the most talented musician, which would make it a matter of thinking of Mike or Peter as the favorite . I heard that both of them were musicians not actors, and that Peter learned to play several instruments by the time he was in his late teens, including the harp.
Peter did not have much to do with singing in The Monkees. I think his most known, or only known song was"Auntie Grezelda" and I have heard it said that Peter's lack of singing ability is obvious in it which is why his voice is hardly heard singing lead in Monkees songs. (I think he sings nicely in "Auntie Grezelda." It is supposed to be a silly funny song. I like it. It is about someone, a young female, who was influenced by her grudge-filled aunt who needs to lighten up).
Mike was also a musician but I think his main or only instrument was the guitar. I liked his songs "What Am I Doin' Hanging 'Round?" and "Listen To The Band," and some others.

I guess I would want to be like Mike or Peter. No use being cute like Davy, or silly even in a talented way, like Mickey when the music is supposed to be most important.

I heard that Davy was supposed to be the drummer but he was too short to be seen behind the drums so Mickey, being the only other non musician, was forced to learn drums.

Anyway, Davy was my favorite because he sang most of my favorite songs. After seeing all the retrospectives over the years I can't see how anyone could like Mike Nesmith. Everything I've heard about him makes him seem like a conceited arrogant *******.

Maybe. But he was possibly the most musically talented of all of them, definitely more than Davey and Mickey so perhaps he was really aware of it and
felt like George Harrison must have felt in the Beatles. Under-recognized because the heart throb gets the most attention.

It's varied over the years. I used to like Davy (because he sang well and I envied his "heart throb" status) and Peter, because he was the funny one. But I've grown to like Mickey a lot; he really honors the Monkees and his past and he's a very good singer. And Mike, though not quite as warm seeming, is a very good musician IRL.

Heck, I like 'em all!

Mike had the coolest hair, had some great deadpan, the coolest sideburns, some country-rock music that was great (hints of Zappa in there on occasion, too)...

All 4 brought something fun and talent into the show, but Mike's persona appealed to me more.
