View Full Version : I'm surprised this happens everytime I go to the doctor
TVFactFan 12-11-2007, 10:22 AM Recepetionst: What's your name sir?
me: Solomon
Receptionist: Can you spell that for me?
me: Sure, all O's
Receptionist: HUH???
I figured everyone has seen the name or heard the name SOLOMON so when I say-"ALL O"s, I'm never expecting to hear someone say-"HUH??
Someone let me know if I'm saying somethign wrong-lol
coffield3 12-11-2007, 10:28 AM Thats rude of her to say huh, its not exactly hard to spell is it.
TVFactFan 12-11-2007, 10:34 AM Thats rude of her to say huh, its not exactly hard to spell is it.

coffield3 12-11-2007, 10:43 AM I be like-"what person over 18 hasn't heard or seen the name Solomon?"
Exactly, plus she shouldn't of replied back to you with a HUH, thats rude.
Kazza 12-11-2007, 11:24 AM The 'Huh' part is rude; I agree but to many people there are several different ways to spell a name or last name. I am having that situation right now with DH's last name . People want to put letters where they don't go or substitute 'e's for 'o's ect.
Hollow 12-11-2007, 11:40 AM well that technically implies that your name is ooooooo or something :grr:
catlover79 12-11-2007, 01:03 PM :brent Solomon, you never fail to crack me up!
TVFactFan 12-11-2007, 01:43 PM well that technically implies that your name is ooooooo or something :grr:
well if she thought that then she wasn't qualified to be sitting in that chair
Janice 12-11-2007, 02:47 PM There are many poor spellers. I think your best best is to simply spell it, if you're asked. Your reply with 'All O's', only confuses a person who isn't a good speller to begin with.

Some people are terrible spellers. It's not always a sign of low intelligence either. My former boss was one of the smartest people I'd ever met, but she was a poor speller. Often times, a person has mild dyslexia. You never know. My husband can't spell to save his life, and he's a very smart man.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-11-2007, 04:51 PM I always have to spell my name out if someone's going to write it down, and once in awhile I'll still get ASHLE-Y instead of ASHLE-E. Such a painnn, I'm to the point where I give up a lot of the time and just let people spell my name wrong.
80s_Fan 12-11-2007, 05:06 PM The problem I have is sometimes, I get mistaken for a man over the telephone because I have a deep voice for a woman, and it's frustrating.
I will call to order food or anything for that matter, and the person will say
(ok sir or mr.) and I have to correct them. They do apologize for it though.
Anybody else with that problem?
catlover79 12-11-2007, 05:37 PM My name is Monika with a "k" and not a "c", so you can imagine how many billions of times it's been misspelled over the years. So Ashlee, I totally understand where you're coming from. (Your new avatar is hilarious, btw.)
Ireneparalegal 12-11-2007, 05:48 PM Why is the receptionist asking what your name is anyways? When I visit the doctor, they know who I am.
If I visit another doctor, I fill out the "sign in" sheet.
Was this your first visit?
Here I go, having to inquire because I need the whole story.
Cactus Jack 12-11-2007, 05:51 PM Why is the receptionist asking what your name is anyways?
Cause he's Solomon
Ireneparalegal 12-11-2007, 05:53 PM I remember when I use to type Solomon's name like this: SOLOMAN...it was then pointed out to me that is not how it is spelled. I knew a Soloman in school who spelled it that way.

Did he not think Good Times was a spinoff of Maude and hated Entenmann's Pie?
theshark8777 12-11-2007, 06:44 PM I used to say my name was Ryan all the time, and everyone always thought it was Brian... It was annoying.

I get asked how to spell my last name Ball, all the time and thats an easy name. (lol!) I can just imagine how bad it is for someone with an unusal name.

i know how that is, i often have people spell my name without an 'h'. pisses me off, it looks so awful without it. my roommates made a sign on our door with all our names on it, spelling mine wrong, but i never said anything about it because i didnt want to be whiny. they probably still think they spelled it correctly.
there have been a few times when people misspelled my last name so that one of the syllables is the word "trash". ugh.....stupid. it's not like it's pronounced that way.

Sara, if I ever did that, I apologize. You're right Sara, our names are our personal identity. I've had people spell my name as Janis, and I think, whoever spelled it like that besides Janis Joplin? So again Sara, if I ever offended you, sorry.
:joke: SARAH!

Here I am being Nancy Grace...interrogating. ;)
Really? You get asked your name regardless? My doctor's office receptionists know me so well, when I call they immediately knows it is me and say, "Hi Irene, how are you?" Sometimes they ask how is my son too. That is what I call a great doctor's office. ;) When I have been in the waiting room, I hear the reception do this to other patients, so I know they make it a good habit to know who their patients are.
Solomon, if your doctor shares his facility with other doctors, I can see why they ask you your name. There are many patients for each doctor. Also, as for spelling your name, like Janice said, it doesn't mean they don't know how to spell, they may just want to be sure of the spelling. Also, if you respond like that, "All OOoooooo's" that may sound rather cocky or rude or even sarcastic. So the receptionist may be caught off guard by your "tone". Remember it is not what you say, but how you say it. ;)

Yes my doctor shares her facility with other doctors. And then when the dumb receptionist tells me that my appt was cancelled and never said anything else I really wanted to slap the SH*T out of her. How the hell are you going to tell a patient that and NOTHING ELSE? I hate dealing with YOUNG PEOPLE

Ohhhh don't get me started on the young people working in such offices (medical, dental, etc.). I remember growing up the receptionists of such professional offices were mature women (sometimes a man). Nowadays, it is abt these young people they hire right out of some vocational school. Those 3 month courses that shoo them in and shoo them out..."Ok, you are a certified medical assistant or receptionist" What those schools need to do is teach these youngsters how to DEAL WITH THE PUBLIC. The only reason those professionals hire those kids is because they get them from the school they graduated from and can pay them at a lower wage than they would someone who actually has MANNERS, PROFESSIONALISM AND PEOPLE SKILLS.

Well she's not the doctor, so she wouldn't know why the doc cancelled your appointment. Your anger shouldn't lie at her door step, it's your doctor you should have the problem with.

Because she had poor customer service skills,
NO EYE CONTACT
UNPLEASANT LOOKING
PROVIDED NO INFORMATION
LOOKEDLIKE SHE DIDN"T GIVE A SH*T
Which is why she belongs in the welfare office

OH Nuts! 12-12-2007, 01:25 AM I always have to spell my name out if someone's going to write it down, and once in awhile I'll still get ASHLE-Y instead of ASHLE-E. Such a painnn, I'm to the point where I give up a lot of the time and just let people spell my name wrong.
A good receptionist/sec'y always takes the time to get a name right. When I take messages on the phone I ask people to spell their name--if I think I know the spelling I spell it out for them & ask if this is correct. This is a good way of making sure you write down Ashlee or Monika instead of what you think the spelling is (Ashley or Monica).
A person's name is important and, IMO, it's very unprofessional to spell or use a person's name incorrectly. By all means correct the sloppy spellers--if they don't like it--too bad--you're there to be served-correctly.
catlover79 12-12-2007, 01:29 AM When I did phone orders, I always made sure to ask the customer I was speaking to if I had the spelling of all names (including the business name) correct. It's not too much to make sure all names are spelled correctly.
Ireneparalegal 12-12-2007, 01:31 AM I did, Her supervisor was the one who calmed me down because I was about to pop blood vessel
oh man, you and that temper of yours. Your blood pressure will go sky high someday. The day you start throwing chairs (a la James Evans) is the day you will need to get yourself checked.

I'm getting that she had a nasty attitude, with one of those unpleasant faces that usually go along with that. I had a teacher like that in school. She always had an unpleasant look plastered across her face, and it matched her lousy attitude. My step-daughter is the same way. She's beautiful, but moody. When she walks into the room, and is in of her crap moods, I can tell by her face before she even opens her mouth.

Janice 12-12-2007, 02:17 AM I feel all of your pain..NO one and I mean," no one" ,call spell my last name, correctly:crazy:
Same here. I've got a mouthful for a last name. We shorten it for take-out, dry cleaners, etc.
treky 12-12-2007, 03:10 AM my last name is KIENLEN and people ALWAYS, ALWAYS,ALWAYS get confused over the correct prounuciation, which is KENLEN. The I is silent, and the E is pronounced like the E in BED or RED. But people always say KEENLEN or KINLEN or they ask what the correct prounciation is.
Either that, or when I tell them my last name, they'll sometimes ask me to spell it.
My father even had a school teacher once, who, when he heard how it's spelled, INSIST that he (my dad) was prounouncing it wrong, and he got into an argument with my father.
EVERYONE'S been doing that for YEARS!!! Sometimes, I get so tired of correcting them, that I just don't say anything. Same thing for every one else in my family.
Stormtracker TF 12-12-2007, 03:53 AM I spell my name out and most of the time people still can't get it right. Much less pronounce it properly...

Hollow 12-14-2007, 09:32 PM well, back on the original subject...it's possible that the receptionists are trained to ask how to spell names, no matter how easy they may be. there are plenty of simple/common names out there that occasionally have weird spellings.
SBTB Geek 12-14-2007, 10:25 PM She asked you how it's spelled. You wouldn't be so irritated if you simply answered the question.
