I know in recent years music sales have collapsed because of the rise of illegal downloading/legal downloading/iPod's. I will be the first to admit that I download more than buy these days since an iPod is so convienient, but I also still purchase cd's by artists that I love and the sort. I sold off a lot of my cd's awhile back on ebay after I bought an iPod, but I also kept a lot of the ones I like the best because the sound quality is still better, especially if you listen to a lot of music while driving and the sort. Does anyone else still buy cd's and do the iPod thing at the same time?

The last CD I bought was the soundtrack for WALK THE LINE. Other than that, if I want a song for my iPod or player on my computer, I download, whether it is from a download service or from iTunes.

In the past two years the only CD's I bought, other than the one I mentioned above, have been hard-to-find CD's for only one song. I am an oldies fanatic and a lot of the songs that I have heard on Sirius satellite I can't find on the download service or iTunes. So, I go to this small oldies music store and order a CD that has the song I want.

It is either Sirius radio or iPod in my car. No more CD's.

I will admit I am too much of a control freak to listen to radio of any sort, if I wanna hear so-and-so, I'm gonna listen to them, haha.

However, I will admit that there are a lot of songs out there that I love to crank when I hear it, and even with an iPod adapter in the car, the sound quality won't tune up as loud as I want

The quality isn't great? Wow, that's too bad. I see no difference with my iPod. If anything, with my iPod I can hear some songs that don't sound that great. What I had to do was buy the songs from iTunes because the several songs that sounded sh*tty, were the ones I downloaded for free. Also, check your speakers, that could be the problem if it doesn't sound good for all your songs. I wonder if the quality of the adaptor might be an issue too.

I, like you, am a control freak too when it comes to music in the car. I can't stand commercials, I can't stand hearing a D.J. talking endlessly, I want MUSIC! And there are times I want to hear what I am in the mood for. If Sirius doesn't deliver, my iPod will. ;)

All I do for music is buy CD's. I prefer them, and I hope they don't go the way of the LP's!

my iPod sounds good when I'm just listening straight from that, but when you plug it into the adapter for the car, it sounds like ****, at least it does in my car

Try and check it on someone else's car and see if it sounds the same.

It could be the adaptor if it sounds bad all the time regardless of what car you plug it into.

I love going to YouTube too, especially when it comes to artists I'm not familiar with. Too bad some of the labels are too greedy when it comes to that. Like I want to see the Blake Lewis video that is supposedly so bad it's good, but everytime someone uploads it, BMG pulls it from the site. Well, how are we supposed to see the damn video? it's not like VH1/MTV will play a video

Oh wow, it really could be the adaptor then. My daughter's friend had an adaptor but when I went to buy the same one, my daughter told me not to buy that one because it didn't sound very good when she used it in her car. So I spent more for another one. I have no idea if that makes a difference.

Wow, that is really a long time, Cathy. I know most of the music being made today is pretty bad, but quite few verteran artists had good new music out in 2007 like Rush, the Eagles, Martina McBride, Prince, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Sara Evans released her first greatest hits CD which had a bunch of really good new songs on it.

I respect that, it's good to keep the music industry going. However, you might be interested in downloading when you consider how many songs out there you can find that will never be officially released on albums, like b-sides and rarities and the sort. I know you're a pretty big Prince fan, awhile back I downloaded a good 200 or so songs that he's recorded but threw away into the vault never to be released again from his Warner Bros. period on another site and it was excellent to sift through. That's days worth of songs available only via mp3 that you'll never find on CD, and some of the material is really good (such as a hard-rock version of the song "U", which he later on gave to Paula Abdul who butchered the song). If there's one good thing about the internet and downloading, it's that now the vaults for a lot of rare songs from artists are no longer so guarded that we never would've heard otherwise.

I agree, there's been a lot of great music coming out recently. A perk to the internet and in stores is that you can sample the CD before buying it so you know if you're getting a good cd or not.

I'm surprised you didn't mention McCartney knowing what a Beatles fan you are. I think his album is definately in the top 10 for the year

I still buy them....this year i think I bought about 15 of them, most were anthologies of music from the 30s to the late 60s.....plus several Shonen Knife and a couple Puffy Ami Yumi. (Japanese girl punk-pop bands are the only NEW music i'm into)

It is interesting that you should mention Paul McCartney in that I was thinking again this afternoon if I should buy his new CD or not. Even though I am a HUGE Beatles fan, I find much of Paul's solo music to be a disappointment. I really like his 70's work, especially the Ram and Band On the Run albums, but much of what he has done since 1980 really doesn't interest me. What usually happens when Paul releases a new album is that I buy it, listen to it two or three times and then never listen to it again. I just go back and listen to the Beatles or his Wings stuff.

I've heard that Prince has a lot of good music to be downloaded and that is probably something that I'll look into in the future. What I sort of meant by being "old school" is that I would never download the music instead of buying the CD.

I'm mixed on most of what Paul has recorded in the past 20 years but I thought "Memory Almost Full" was a great album, I actually played it for a few friends who don't usually care for McCartney and/or just think he's some old fart now and pretty much everyone was "wow, this is surprisingly good". There's surprisingly very little filler on the album and I was impressed quite a bit, and like you, I haven't really care for much of his latter output but this is classic Paul, and the fact that he's 65 made it even so much more impressive since he hasn't been this energetic in ages.

The CD has gotten some pretty impressive reviews. I know that Greg Kot, who is the rock critic for the Chicago Tribune, loved it, and he's one of those people who finds something wrong with pretty much everything. I've also heard that sales wise the album is doing better than Paul's last couple of CDs.

yep, it just got a few Grammy nods also. There are a lot of throwback hints to The Beatles and Wings on the album, but also he stays modern without sounding like he's trying too hard to stay hip. "Mr. Bellamy" is probably the best track off the album, it sounds a bit like what would've happened if The Beatles got back together in the present day (if Lennon and Harrison never died) and just did an impromptu session before going their separate ways again. "Nod Your Head" is another great track that sounds like a mixture of "Live And Let Die" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and is one of his liveliest rockiest numbers in ages, and it's only 2 mins long.

It only takes me 12 minutes to get to work. I've been playing the new Eagles CD in my car a great deal. The title track, "The Long Road Out Of Eden" is perfect driving music. So is "The Last Good Time In Town", which is probably my favorite song right now. :D

The only time I buy CD's now is if I want to have every song on the album. If it's just one or a few songs I just buy them from iTunes. Plus I still love to actually have a psysical CD and to smell the booklet (lol) and read the lyrics. Although since I got my ipod- I'll listen to the CD itself ONCE and then right after I immediately put it on my ipod- so the album itself sits in dust!

last physical CD i bought was Daughtry's CD last November...before that, it was Carrie Underwood's (first) CD the November before. i really only buy CDs of people i'm huge fans of.

and the only reason i buy the physical copies is to support the artist, i just put the songs in my iPod/iTunes. i don't think i've used my discman once since i got an iPod, and all of the stereos in the house are broken. so...

I don't think the Beatles catalog is yet on iTunes. I know Led Zeppelin just went to iTunes a couple weeks ago. A lot of the classic artists seem to be holding back on the iTunes thing. All it does is make people more willing to "steal" the music for free is there's no alternative besides spending $15 on a cd

Funny, I thought Paul McCartney recently agreed to put some of his music on iTunes, even going so far as to appear in an ad for them. Either way, both he & Jimmy Page came in pretty late. Still, there are CD's out there that aren't available on iTunes like Man's Ruin: "Who You Callin' Cracker? (http://wm04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gnfpxqljldte)" And as I stated earlier, there atr tunes out there that never came out on CD, like WBAB; 102.3 FM's 1981 Homegrown Album.
