View Full Version : "Picture It" Petrie
SawgrassSteve 12-06-2007, 02:44 PM This could be fun.
From time to time I come across images that remind me of an episode of TDVDS. I also like to doodle. I think it might be fun to post these images here to see how many of my fellow TDVDS fans will guess the episode the image is from, or how it otherwise reminds you of the show. Get it? Good.
You might even like to post some of your own.
Don't worry. If it bores you, I promise to stop!
Here's image #1
Mikado 12-07-2007, 02:40 AM no idea , but, an interesting drawing (looks like a cremation urn  )
Carrie 12-07-2007, 05:30 PM That's a wonderful drawing Steve! It looks very familiar but I can't place the episode.
Is it some type of lamp base?
SawgrassSteve 12-08-2007, 06:12 PM No, it's not a lamp base, but suppose it could be an urn.
This one isn't necessarily from a particular episode, but it does prominently sit in a place in the Petrie house. Frankly I'm surprised no one has gotten it after more than 30 views! But I'll leave it for some Johnny-come-lately, rather than give the answer as to where we always see it, and what's a bit odd about it. I'll post another.
Here's pic #2
JudgeGarth 12-08-2007, 06:56 PM Pic #2 is easier. That's "Show of Hands" where Ritchie, Laura and Rob all put their hands in a pot of permanent dye.
SawgrassSteve 12-09-2007, 01:32 PM That's right, JudgeGarth!
How about Pic #3?
Steve
Larry Surrell 12-10-2007, 08:48 PM Hi Steve,
Could that first drawing be the lamp that hangs in front of the window in the living room?
Did you draw that freehand? If so I am impressed; you're very talented.
I'll leave the crummy buttons for somebody else to answer -- BLECH!
SawgrassSteve 12-11-2007, 05:32 PM Sorry Larry,
It's not a livingroom lamp at all. There's really no way to give a hint as to what this is, because no one really knows what it is, just where it is, since we often see it in the background.
Thanks for the complement on my art! Yes, I work freehand.
Steve
Carrie 12-12-2007, 11:11 AM That's right, JudgeGarth!
How about Pic #3?
Steve
That one is from "When a Bowling Pin Talks, Listen!"
Still trying to place that first pic. ;)
Pentimento 12-13-2007, 11:12 AM #1 looks like that thing in the niche in the wall behind their beds. I specifically recall noticing it in the episode where Rob thinks he's going bald but I know it was in others as well. I have no idea what it is.
SawgrassSteve 12-13-2007, 07:36 PM #1 looks like that thing in the niche in the wall behind their beds. I specifically recall noticing it in the episode where Rob thinks he's going bald but I know it was in others as well. I have no idea what it is.
YES!
You're correct, Pentimento. I don't know what it is either, but when you seee it, you will always see it behind Rob's head as he's lying in bed.
I've concluded that it's some sort of container, or as Mikado says, "an urn."
The odd thing about it is (I'll tell this answer); it's not always there! Some epidoseds don't have it sitting there at all. But whenever we do see it, it's always at the head of Rob's bed.
Whew, thanks, Pentimento.
Steve
SawgrassSteve 12-13-2007, 11:40 PM That one is from "When a Bowling Pin Talks, Listen!"
Still trying to place that first pic. ;)
Right, Carrie!
You win a free carton of Crimmy Buttons!
Steve
Mikado 12-13-2007, 11:49 PM YES!
I've concluded that it's some sort of container, or as Mikado says, "an urn."
Steve
Maybe Rob was keeping his parent's ashes in there;)
JudgeGarth 12-14-2007, 12:18 PM Maybe Rob was keeping his parent's ashes in there;)
Couldn't be. His parents were still alive.
Larry Surrell 12-14-2007, 08:18 PM I'll try one. If you can, name the manufacturer and model of this guitar. What is its connection to The Dick Van Dyke Show?

Pentimento 12-15-2007, 01:14 PM Couldn't be. His parents were still alive....and they had cemetery plots reserved.
Mikado 12-15-2007, 04:53 PM Couldn't be. His parents were still alive.
Grandparents then ;)

Oops!
I almost said this was Stacey Petrie's guitar, until I just remembered he plays a banjo!
Hmmm. This one's got me stumped - so far. I'll keep working on it, though.
Steve
Larry Surrell 12-17-2007, 09:50 PM For anyone playing,
Let me know if you want a hint or even the answer to the guitar question. I don't want it to go unanswered too long!
Steve,
I'm watching season 2 episodes and noticed the "Urn" is on the shelf behind Rob's bed in "Bank Book 6565696" but is absent in the next episode "The Attempted Marriage", just like you said!
Carrie 12-20-2007, 09:48 AM Right, Carrie!
You win a free carton of Crimmy Buttons!
Steve
YUCKKK!!!
:D
Carrie 12-20-2007, 09:49 AM I'll try one. If you can, name the manufacturer and model of this guitar. What is its connection to The Dick Van Dyke Show?
http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/50/eb/57/22919286-177x150-0-0.jpg
Just taking a guess here. Was that the guitar that the guys played in "The Redcoats Are Coming?"
Larry Surrell 12-20-2007, 08:47 PM You're correct Carrie, great job! The guitar is a Gibson J160E and Chad & Jeremy played them when they appeared on the show as The Redcoats.
Since you don't want the Crummy Buttons, how about a bag of Potato Poopies?
SawgrassSteve 12-21-2007, 12:13 AM How about this one? How does it relate to our show?
Steve
Mikado 12-21-2007, 12:42 AM All i see is an "X"
Carrie 12-21-2007, 12:44 PM You're correct Carrie, great job! The guitar is a Gibson J160E and Chad & Jeremy played them when they appeared on the show as The Redcoats.

Yes, I think those will do. Thanks!
SawgrassSteve 12-22-2007, 05:12 PM All i see is an "X"
Hmmm.
Don't know how I goofed, but it should show up now (above).
Steve
Carrie 12-24-2007, 06:12 PM It was referenced in "It May Look Like a Walnut."
:)
SawgrassSteve 01-01-2008, 11:49 PM Correct again, Carrie!
Can anyone connect this bird to an episode?
Steve
Mikado 01-02-2008, 05:58 AM Thats from the cartoon special,,,"Woody Woodpecker meets the Petries"! ;)
SawgrassSteve 01-02-2008, 11:13 AM LOL!
Actually, you're close to being correct, Mikado.
And didn't it look painful when Woody did that rapid-fire pecking onto someone's head with his beak??? Ouch!
Steve
SawgrassSteve 01-23-2008, 09:09 PM LOL!
Well, I can't tell if I bored you or stumped you with that woodpecker! I hope I'm not the only one having fun with these, so I'll try a different one. Does this remind anyone of a particular eposode?
Steve
JudgeGarth 01-23-2008, 10:39 PM That was on a billboard in 'Brrrooom Brrrooom'.
Lolac 01-25-2008, 02:50 PM The woodpecker is from "A Bird in the Head Hurts." Richie gets pecked in the head by a woodpecker.

Lolac
:)
Correct, JudgeGarth and Lolac! You're both right.
This next one is not from a very popular episode, and it only had one scene as I recall, so it may prove a little more challenging.
Anybody?
Lolac 01-25-2008, 09:29 PM Correct, JudgeGarth and Lolac! You're both right.

From "The Square Triangle" where Laura shows Millie and Sally a sugar cube given to her by Jacques Savon several years earlier in France.
Steve, I'm back!

Lolac
:wink2:
I see, and I couldn't be more thrilled!
I'm gonna hafta figure out some images to challenge your skill level. As for your answer, correct, as usual, Lolac!
Steve
Lolac 01-25-2008, 10:28 PM I'm very impressed with your skill level! I know I've seen samples of your work before, but I'd forgotten how talented you are. These drawings are very good!
Lolac
SawgrassSteve 01-26-2008, 11:17 PM You're too kind, Lolac:thanks:
Yep, that's me; resident artist, poet, song writer, cheif cook, and bottle washer!
Ok, everyone. I'll try to keep these fair for everyone to play along, but Lolac is sharp, and quick, so you'll have to work at this!
Here's an image that might vaguely remind you of an episode, if you really focus.
Mikado 01-26-2008, 11:32 PM Love the roses , nice watercolour
SawgrassSteve 01-26-2008, 11:47 PM Love the roses , nice watercolour
Thanks, Mikado :tiphat: . I'm glad you like it!
Steve
Lolac 01-27-2008, 08:53 AM The roses remind me of "How to Spank a Star," when Rob brings Laura Roses after his encounter with Paula "Paula Poo" Marshall.

Lolac
:)
He did that, true enough.
But I'm thinking of a less direct application for the rose. There's only one aspect of the painting that would fit the episode I have in mind. In fairness, I may have gone a bit too abstract here.
Care to try again?
In this quote lies a hint: "A rose by any other name, would still smell as sweet."
Steve

Lolac
Apparently, I've forgotten how many referrences there are to roses on TDVDS! That's an excellent guess, Lolac, but not the ep I was thinking of.
Look at the hint again. Does anything else come to mind?
Steve
Lolac 01-27-2008, 09:40 PM "What's in a Middle Name." Richie "Rosebud" Petrie.
Robert
Oscar
Sam
Edward
Benjamin
Ulysses
David
I hope this is it, Steve! I can't think of any more rose episodes!
Lolac
SawgrassSteve 01-28-2008, 06:05 PM Bingo, Lolac! You nailed it.
My first instinct was to do a simple, single rosebud in a bud vase. That might've helped. I guess I just got carried away, but I was hoping that by making the bud stand out above the mature blossoms someone might figure it out. That's what I meant by it being not such a direct application of the image. It wasn't so much about the actual flower as it was about the name.
Good job.
Here's another one that should be a bit of a challenge. Was there a referrence to anything having to do with what this image shows us in the show?

Lolac
LOL! Right!
At which point, Roger became quite flustered, as well I would have (whew)!
Ok,
Talk about a rare referrence, what does this poster remind us of?
Steve
Lolac 01-28-2008, 09:52 PM I remember the discussion between Sally, Rob and Buddy and Laura about the movies Riffifi and Topkapi and I believe it was in the episode "Obnoxious, Offensive, Egomaniac, etc." when they are trying to break into Alan's office. I'm a little fuzzy on this one, but I think that's where it is.
Lolac
(This is actually quite fun. Stretches the mind!)
SawgrassSteve 01-29-2008, 11:55 PM Actually, I've forgotten which ep it was  , so I can't hold you to it, but basically, you're right. Sally was asking the guys about the correct pronunciation of the titles, "Rififi", and "Topkapi".
That one was pretty obscure, I know.
Good job, Lolac!
Steve
SawgrassSteve 01-30-2008, 05:05 PM Softball, anyone?
Lolac 01-30-2008, 05:52 PM Steve, what a lovely watercolor!!! I'm going to give someone else a turn at this one. I seem to be monopolizing the discussion here. (I do know the answer, however!)

Hi Lolac  It's nice to "See" you!
I love that episode, Larry Surrell!
BTW Larry, did you know that in the final scene, when Mary cleared the table with one shot she was expected to miss, but didn't? There were no magnets or camera tricks involved. The balls were set up by a pool pro, but she really did make the shot in one take. Watch the surprised look on her face for the first 1.5 seconds immediately afterward. She almost blows the take, but taking a cue from Dick (no pun intended), she got it together.
Nice post!
Steve

You really notice it if you play the scene in slow motion. She looks off-stage then quickly composes herself to stay in character. It's a great shot!

SawgrassSteve 01-31-2008, 09:57 AM Crude sketch, I know. But I'm in a hurry!
Carrie 02-01-2008, 08:35 AM Is that one from "The Night the Roof Fell In?"
Steve, I have loved looking at your drawings and paintings! You are a very talented artist. :)
SawgrassSteve 02-01-2008, 11:53 AM Is that one from "The Night the Roof Fell In?"
Steve, I have loved looking at your drawings and paintings! You are a very talented artist. :)
Correct, Carrie!
And I believe it's the only episode in which we see the Petrie's aquarium.
Thanks for your compliments to my art. I really appreciate it!
You know, Carrie, I'll become eligeble for early retirement in 6 years. At that point, I plan to embark on a second carreer as an artist, which is something I absolutely love.
BTW, don't worry about me, lol. These are just some quick lines and splashes of color. When I take my time, I actually do a better job (I think  )!
Steve
SawgrassSteve 02-01-2008, 11:56 AM What is this, and where does it fit into the Petrie world?
Carrie 02-01-2008, 12:57 PM That object can be found on the table behind the curved couch. It's a decoration of some kind, maybe made out of glass and wood or ceramic. I'm not sure about that though. You can see some of it behind Laura in this pic. :)
Larry Surrell 02-01-2008, 08:40 PM Steve,
Thanks for the "Hustling the Hustler" info. It's amazing that Mary made that shot. I don't think I could have done that, even with expert coaching
Here's one more from me. Put the following three pictures together and see if you know which episode I'm thinking about. It is one of my favorites, and I just watched it last night.

SawgrassSteve 02-02-2008, 09:50 AM Larry,
Those would be the incredients for Laura's famous "Peanut Butter & Avocado Dip," from the episode, "ALL ABOUT EAVESDROPPING"!
One of my favs too.
Steve
SawgrassSteve 02-02-2008, 02:22 PM Here's a tuffy. Hints to follow.
Carrie 02-02-2008, 07:38 PM Is that a reference to Maria's painting in "Turtles, Ties and Toreadors?"
SawgrassSteve 02-02-2008, 08:43 PM Is that a reference to Maria's painting in "Turtles, Ties and Toreadors?"
Nope. Sorry, Carrie. Good guess, though.
Steve
Carrie 02-03-2008, 05:15 AM How about Maria's boyfriend Manuel who says he's a bullfighter in "Viva Petrie?"
SawgrassSteve 02-03-2008, 04:06 PM Nope. ohno:
Sorry again.
Steve
Larry Surrell 02-03-2008, 04:18 PM I'll take a stab at it. It's one of two episodes I'm thinking of.
Could that be the dress Rob brought back from a trip to Mexico that's mentioned in "Young Man with a Shoehorn"?
Carrie 02-03-2008, 04:24 PM Aw, heck LOL! I bet that's it. Good guess Larry!

LOL!
If you mean the one that Laura never wears and is still in the top of her closet, YES!
Good one, Larry Surrell  !
Steve
Carrie 02-04-2008, 09:47 AM I hope you guys don't mind me going out of turn since I totally bombed out on that last one, LOL. But I found this cute picture and had to post it! Which episode does this reference?
Pentimento 02-04-2008, 11:16 AM "Bad Reception in Albany"
SawgrassSteve 02-04-2008, 08:44 PM I'm sure you're right, Pentimento.
And that's an excellent pic, Carrie. BTW, you're not going out of turn. Just jump right in with a pic and let's have some fun.
This dosn't count, but I thought it might be something to share. My wife sent me a link to this. Check out the name. Cool, huh?

Steve
Larry Surrell 02-06-2008, 09:39 PM You guys are all good at this game. I never would have guessed the peas in a pod looking thing that sits behind the sofa, or figured out the significance of the seal picture.
Let's see if you know what episode this picture could be from
http://www.cat-dog-names.com/kitten-names.jpg
Carrie 02-07-2008, 09:50 AM "Gesundheit, Darling" :)

Carrie says, "Gesundheit, Darling", and I say "One Hundred Terrible Hours"! Who's right?
Steve
Larry Surrell 02-07-2008, 09:40 PM Steve,
"Gesundheit, Darling" was the episode I was thinking of, but your kitty from
"One Hundred Terrible Hours" is just as legitimate. Once again, you guys have it all over me. When I posted the picture I couldn't think of another episode with a cat!
Carrie 02-08-2008, 09:51 AM Which episode is this object from?
Pentimento 02-08-2008, 11:20 AM "The Ghost of A. Chantz"
Carrie 02-08-2008, 11:29 AM Correct!
SawgrassSteve 02-08-2008, 04:47 PM In which episode have we seen these?
Lolac 02-08-2008, 05:56 PM In which episode have we seen these?
We see the mop, funnel and ball in "Happy Birthday and Too Many More." Rob dons these items as his cotume for "Robbo the Clown" at Richie's birthday party.
Lolac
SawgrassSteve 02-08-2008, 08:28 PM That's right, Lolac!
I always secretly hoped Laura gave Rob a mop head she'd never used, lol. :X)

SawgrassSteve 02-10-2008, 11:26 PM What's this?
Carrie 02-11-2008, 09:36 AM Was that the name of the soap opera that Laura called "pure trash" or something like that, LOL. I can't remember what episode that was in though.
SawgrassSteve 02-12-2008, 03:21 PM Was that the name of the soap opera that Laura called "pure trash" or something like that, LOL. I can't remember what episode that was in though.
That's right, Carrie. It's from, "A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ALAN BRADY".
When I saw Mary speak in person, here in downtown Chicago, she said she hates what is happening to television today. Wouldn't you love to know what Laura could have seen on TV in 1966 that would prompt her to label it as "trash"?
Steve
Carrie 02-12-2008, 06:15 PM Hmm, that's an interesting thought Steve. I'm sure it wasn't even half as bad as what is allowed on tv today LOL.

Mikado 02-15-2008, 03:38 PM I thought it was called: Pink Pills For Purple Parents?
That episode was named after the most famous Canadian "Patent medicine" of all time: "Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People"; It was claimed to cure chorea, referenced frequently in newspaper headlines as "St. Vitus' Dance," as well as "locomotor ataxia, partial paralyxia, seistica, neuralgia rheumatism, nervous headache, the after-effects of la grippe, palpitation of the heart, pale and sallow complexions, [and] all forms of weakness in male or female."  (In truth, it, like most patent medicines was probably more harmfull than a true cure for anything)
SawgrassSteve 02-15-2008, 05:51 PM Ok,
I'm obviously no Carroll Shelby when it comes to designing high performance, concept cars, so this'll have to do  . But I threw in another visual referrence to help out.
What's the episode?
JudgeGarth 02-15-2008, 06:55 PM That's 'Scratch My Car and Die' (complete with a bunch of bananas. LOL)
That's one of my favorites. I always thought that that was one ep that could successfully be made into a short stage play. You never actually SEE the car in the episode.
ClassicTVGal 02-15-2008, 10:29 PM I think it's your turn, JudgeGarth.

This next picture may be a little tricky, since there were a few episodes with dogs:

Larry Surrell 02-18-2008, 04:20 PM You are correct, Lolac. Edwin Carp is the episode I was thinking of. That's not my dog, just a picture of a beagle I found on the Internet. It sure is cute, though!

Oh, THAT's Lord Byron!
That's Rob "Dr Bonelli" Petrie in, "THE TWO FACES OF ROB".
You know, you're a little too good at this for some of the rest of us  !
I may be wrong Lolac, but I think I've also heard the name Lord Byron mentioned, maybe on another episode.
Steve
Lolac 02-19-2008, 03:55 PM You got it, Steve!!! I admit, I went a little hard on this one. I only knew it was a Lord Byron poem because I looked it up a couple years ago when I heard Charles Emerson Winchester III recite the same poem in an episode of M*A*S*H. However, I learned at that time that it is one of the most commonly quoted poems in literature, so I thought others might know about it. I don't remember hearing Lord Byron's name mentioned on TDVDS but I could be terribly wrong on that one. Good job, Steve!

I'm a huge fan of Laurel and Hardy, so that sketch is one of my favorites too. I think Sol played a better Ollie than Rob played Stanley, though.

The one of Laura and the Italian painter is just marvelous. The extra little touch of the "drip" coming off the paintbrush adds a real "pro" feel to it, IMO. ("You say no touch-a the brick, I no touch-a the brick!") :)
Here's one for you guys to guess:
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:mxlXtHO4VS_rOM:http://www.aiga.org/Resources/SymbolSigns/gif_large/16_drinkingfountain_inv.gif
David VP 03-25-2008, 07:19 PM I thought it was called: Pink Pills For Purple Parents?
It's actually entitled "PINK PILLS AND PURPLE PARENTS", but Image Entertainment/(Brownstein Prod.) made a mistake on the title of that episode on the DVDs, and the mistake is repeated on both the plastic slimcase and on the DVD Menus too. A curious boo-boo, but kind of a fun error too I've always thought, because the title used on the DVD seems fitting too: "Pink Pills For Purple Patients". :)
JudgeGarth 03-25-2008, 10:40 PM Here's one for you guys to guess:
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:mxlXtHO4VS_rOM:http://www.aiga.org/Resources/SymbolSigns/gif_large/16_drinkingfountain_inv.gif
Is that 'Brother Can You Spare $2500'? I'm thinking of the whatshisname Memorial Water Fountain.
David VP 03-25-2008, 11:57 PM Yes, Judge. Exactly. Very good.
ROB -- "Is that the Louie Wexler water fountain?"
WOMAN -- "I'm not sure....but ANYBODY can drink from it."

And here I was all set to answer, "That's the fountain Lyle Delp stopped to get a drink of water at just before the police nabbed him." Oh well. Good one, JudgeGarth.
And thank you, David, for your complements about my art! They're much appreciated.
Steve :D
Larry Surrell 03-26-2008, 08:13 PM This should be fairly easy to figure out.

David VP 03-26-2008, 08:27 PM That's the "Don't toy with me, you saucy wench" episode. (aka: "Never Bathe On Saturday", although Carl Reiner refers to the episode as "Never Bathe On SUNDAY" in one of the interviews done for the Image DVDs. :))
"How can you get stuck in a bathtub? Is it THAT narrow?"
Tell me the TWO episodes that this is associated with:
http://www.algi.qc.ca/asso/zami/tombstone%20cartoon.gif
Lolac 03-27-2008, 04:18 PM One is "The Plots Thicken" where Rob and Laura have 4 cemetery plots, the latest being the one Rob's dad bought on a golf course.
The second could be "Not Now Anthony Stone," where Sally is dating a mortician or it could be "Ghost of A. Chantz" where Rob, Laura, Buddy and Sally spend the night in a haunted cabin and think they see the ghost of a dead man. Which one did you have in mind?
Lolac

David VP 03-27-2008, 06:09 PM Correct, Lolac. "Anthony Stone" is the second one.

LauraNamesake 06-14-2008, 10:46 PM I just watched that episode yesterday. It's "Pink Pills for Purple Parents." Those are the carrots and peas that Millie brings over! Great job! BTW, Lauranamesake, are you new to the board? I don't believe I've seen you before so welcome!

Yup!
And, yes I am new to here and thank you for welcoming me! Your turn to post again!

This one might be a little hard. I just watched the episode, so it is fresh in my mind. Good luck!

Larry Surrell 06-21-2008, 09:18 PM Is that the dog in "Odd but True" that ate the head off the potato shaped like a duck?

LauraNamesake 06-22-2008, 07:09 PM I get it now. Wasn't thinking hard enough.
Here's one, but I just watched the episode, so not sure if there will be more than one occasion that would involve this....I'm thinking of a specific one though.
Lolac 06-22-2008, 07:15 PM The jewelry box in "The Cat Burglar?" That is a pretty one!

Yup! Wow! didn't know if you would get that one! I love that episode!!!!!! It's so funny when he tries to open the jewlery box to get the one lone bullet out and he can't without it playing music! Then Laura says: "Oh Rooooooob!" Pure genius writing and acting!
Your turn!

I agree! That is one of my favorite episodes as well! This one should be easy.
Lolac
LauraNamesake 06-22-2008, 09:57 PM Romance, Roses, and Rye Bread? It could also be The Two Faces of Rob where he brings her home roses...her favorite red ones and others...
There are a couple of occasions with roses...the best one I can think of is Romance Roses and Rye Bread, but looking at your avatar, with Laura in her "Dolche Far Niente" dress, it could just as easily be The Two Faces of Rob (one of my very favorite episodes!!!)
ClassicTVGal 10-07-2010, 10:57 PM Mind if I bump this thread?
I'm actually going to do an easy one and use an icon that I made recently! ;)

Carrie 02-22-2011, 12:27 PM The Impractical Joke?
goodolddays 02-23-2011, 08:36 PM Yep ! :D
Carrie 02-25-2011, 12:20 PM I'm not sure if this one has been done before or not, but here you go. :)
ClassicTVGal 03-12-2011, 12:36 PM If this is a golf theme, it reminds me of "The Life and Love of Joe Coogan", but I could be horribly wrong, lol.
(BTW, it is GREAT to see you on the site again Carrie! You've been missed!! And that goes for the GS board, too)
