Big Mea culpa here. I guess I hadn't seen enough episodes to realize, that while June is a loving and a really nice person, she is almost pathologicaly overprotective. She and Ward left the boys alone for one night. Wally had to be at least 15, and June wanted to call home every hour. June was sure that something would go wrong. In that case, something did go wrong. She spends her life with a worried look on her face. She reminds me of an aunt I had. She coddles those boys. If this was real life, they would grow up to be the biggest Mommy's boys.

I haven't heard Wally or Beaver complain about her though, but I haven't seen all the episodes. It's a good thing she had Ward to keep her somewhat grounded. She worried for a hobby.

I'm not a parent or anything but I think it's one of those things about being a mother does. They just are overly protective and if I recall, this is the second or third episode where Wally watches Beaver. Unless they did it other times when the episodes didn't air.

Well, we tried to tell ya Janice. ;) But like you said, you have to see things for yourself. June was definitely a loving mother and a beautiful wife to Ward. But! she did have her overprotective moments that just seemed to scream "ENOUGH!!!" Nowadays, many kids could use that kind of overprotection love and concern.

I can be overprotective at times with my son, but he is 6 years old and he can be rambunctious. I had my moments with my girls too, but eventually you learn to just let them be free and allow yourself to be free from worrying yourself sick.

OH Nuts!

For shame...what was I thinking? Apparently I wasn't.

I love how Janice used the term "off the wall"...who would ever have seen that term and June Cleaver used in the same sentence. I love that term, I use it A LOT!;)

And the dress so crisply pressed you could cut an apple on one of the creases.

I don't think that June is off the wall overall, just at certain times when she gets waaaaay overprotective of "the boys". I like the character a great deal actually. She's very sweet, sincere, loving and an exceptional wife and mother. She just goes over the top sometimes.

If the show was being aired today, this would be their sponsor.

I don't really think she was that overprotective, given how much trouble Wally and Beaver managed to get into when the parents were home. The episode I saw where they were left at home is the one where Wally makes dinner for Beaver, then tells him to take a bath before dinner (rather than after, as Beaver is used to). Then while the water is running, Wally yells at Beaver to come eat, but Beaver has forgotten to turn off the water, making that water spot on the kitchen ceiling.

My mom used to be kind of overprotective of me. Believe it or not, she would never let me stay over night by myself. I always had to stay with my grandparents. Seriously, when she finally let me stay by myself overnight, I was old enough to move out. Turns out that the very next month I moved into my own apartment.

Yes June was overprotective, no doubt about that. But she was a great mother. I'm a school teacher and how I wish some of my students had someone like June as a mother. I'll take over protective over I really don't give a darn anyday.

So you've met my ex-mother-in-law eh?! LOL

Son is going to be 52 in a month and she freaks if he gets the sniffles or has a fart crosswise. It DOES drive him bananas too.

I think June says the following line in almost every episode. "Ward, I'm worried about the Beaver."

I think the WORST example of wacko-June was on the one where she INSISTED Beaver have a baby-sitter when he was way too old to have one! She was INTENSE on that one! Remember the episode at all? That's the one where Richard and Gilbert were there in the living room trying to bust Beaver for having a babysitter, when he said he'd be home alone. Anyway, VERY shortly after her and Ward are gone, the phone rings and it's June! Now, WHY would she be calling SO SOON when she knew VERY WELL the Beav HAD a babysitter? When Beaver plays off the phone call in front of Richard and Gilbert by pretending June's just some random lady asking about his mom; June makes a panic-move of getting ready to RUSH BACK HOME! June's plans were reversed when she called back home and Beaver explained what he was doing (dodging Richard and Gilbert's inevitable mocking of him, due to him having a sitter when he was too damn old for one!). In short, June was sometimes CRAZY over the top with the worrying!

At least the babysitter was nice and went and hid in the kitchen so Richard and Gilbert wouldn't see her and it would look like Beaver really was home alone!

Yeah, really! She probably felt sorry for Beaver for having such oddly overprotective parents!

Speaking of all of this, in conjunction with the thread topic; do you think, IF June knew Judy (the babysitter) did all that, that she would EVER hire her again to babysit the Beav? Personally, I think the whole thing would trigger June's paranoia too much to allow for Judy to be employed by the Cleavers EVER again!
