Whether it is a gift or anything like that, have you received something you didn't like, couldn't use, etc?

Yesterday my son received a belated birthday gift from my dear friend. I love her to death. However, for the second time my son received a gift that I would never buy him. It is one of those Nerf guns that shoots nerf-type bullets at this target. I never ever bought my kids any type of gun-type toy. I didn't want my kids to think it was ok that guns can be perceived as toys. Not to mention the danger of hurting someone with a projectile. OUCH! My son had received from his half-sister last Christmas this similar toy gun that had these rubber-type bullets. I hid that toy one day until my son forgot abt it and then I threw it away. I guess I will have to do that again for this toy.

Years ago, someone bought me a perfume called 'Youth Dew' and I wasn't even old enough to wear stuff like that!
Anyways, I ended up giving it to mom so she could take a sniff and it made her:barf: so out the door it went.

A tie. The typical easy gift to give to a man.
It's hard to buy for a man...seriously!!!! I have no idea what to buy my guy for Christmas. I bought him lots of shirts last year and to be honest, I don't want to buy more clothes for him because I have to wash them, fold them and put them away.

Some type of cotton candy and gummy bear sprays... uh it was so sweet smelling and gave me the worst headache. Plus I'm not one for smelling like carnival food. I tossed those.

In past few years I haven't gotten any useless gifts so I can't really complain :)

That's pretty much been my philosophy, too. Unless the gift is something I already have, then I'll tell the gift-giver so we can work out some kind of exchange.

The same thing kinda happened at my daughters birthday party. A friend of our bought those big water guns to their birthday party, and I hid those from everyone and at the end of the night I threw them away. Like you I don't like any kind of gun toy.

Also one of our wedding presents was this huge ugly green and red vase, I returned it and bought some nice flatware.

Is it rude to let people know what you will not allow your kids to have? I didn't think it was, but maybe that's because I have several friends and my sister who do that. I actually appreciate it, because I don't want to waste my money on something they're going to throw away...it is the thought that counts, but I'd like to get the kids something they can have and that they'll like.

For many years, my Granman would give all her Grandsons an "Old Spice" gift pack, which i would ultimately give to my Dad because.......Im deathly allergic to the stuff! This went on every Xmas for maybe 6 years, before I finally had mom explain that i cant use the stuff!

Then there was the UGGGGGGLY shirt my Dad gave me one year, it was multicoloured on a red background......looked as if someone had thrown up a large pizza with all the toppings, onto it.....Since my Dad picked it out, and loved it, he had himself a new shirt that Xmas!

Exactly. And lotion. I never use that either, and those four things always seem to be such popular gifts.
So does anyone ever "re-gift?" C'mon be honest now... I don't for most people but I do for my sister because she does it to me all the time. I've gotten opened and used things from her before, so I don't feel one bit bad about doing it right back to her. I'm not all that fond of her either, so it doesn't really bother me much.

Yeah I cringe every time I see a parent buy their kids toy guns in the store.

I know this is off topic, but I also cringe when I see little girls in adult type clothing. The other day I was in Toys R Us and this little girl (who looked all of 5 yrs old) was in High Heels. They were see thru little high heel shoes, I was shocked.

Oh God yes. I can't stand seeing little girls wearing half-shirts and these sandals that are really high heels. They try to market them as low-heeled sandals, or whatever. I have seen little girls wearing jewelry like they were Elizabeth Taylor! The worst thing though, in my eyes, are the little girls who wear those levi skirts or any short skirt that covers NOTHING. You can clearly see their panties and I can only imagine a bunch of sickos out there with their camera phones or any camera taking pics of their behinds for their perverted pleasure. puke:

Exactly, I don't know what goes through some parents heads. I want my little ones to stay little as long as possible. I don't want them wearing anything that's short or low cut, or anything with lettering on seat of their pants.

Yes, I'm totally against toy guns as gifts for kids. Very inappropriate, IMO.

As for gifts I don't like, think are cheesy etc. ...I look at it this way...the gift the giver's giving me is the gift of charity...I just leave the unwanted item for a homeless person or take it to Goodwill--either way it'll end up with someone who'll appreciate it...and that makes me feel good.

This post just reminded me... At work, I end up in the hosiery department towards the end of my shift. They have PURSES there for lil girls! I'm confused by that, because when you're 10 years old, what could you possibly have that you need to carry around all the time? Lip gloss? They aren't old enough to work yet so they don't need a wallet or a checkbook. And they are far too young for perfume and makeup. :faint:

Well, its not a received gift but, when i was about 8, I bought my Granma (Who loved perfume) a bottle of what *I* thought must have been the very best.....it was blue (the liquid itself) and came in a bottle about the size of one of those old "small" pop bottles from the 60s (later replaced by pop cans) and had a big blue many pointed plastic star on the stopper! Well, it just HAD to be good, right? Of course, Granma always used TOO MUCH perfume, so for many years thereafter (big bottle, lasted a long time), on all special occasions, Granma wore the "special" perfume given to her by a devoted grandson...much to no one's delight.....but mine!!! (I wish I had the bottle now, to remember her, and that Xmas so long ago, but, apparently, one of my aunts threw it away the SECOND it was finally empty! )
