View Full Version : Shows with a great final season
storrs19 11-26-2007, 01:42 PM How about shows with a great final season. Ones that come to mind are:
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show
The Golden Girls
I Love Lucy (some will argue here but many of my favorite episodes are from Season 6)
catlover79 11-26-2007, 01:44 PM Barney Miller
JulieSomoski 11-26-2007, 05:24 PM Murphy Brown - some will say it was the worst ever because of the breast cancer storyline (and with the season coming in at 75th, you'd probably argue with me) but I personally loved it. The show was definitely growing old after 9 seasons, so Murphy having cancer in the tenth season showed us how Murphy was tough, and it also showed us the things we've been seeing since day 1.
Chain Gang Member 11-26-2007, 05:33 PM Good TImes even though it was kinda rushy since every 5-10 minutes somebody got something good happening to them.
EmoJoe 11-26-2007, 07:25 PM Boy Meets World - i always thought the last season was one of the best. Cory and Topanga finally got married and the show just got funnier, especially over the bland Season 6.
Who's the Boss? - i wouldn't say it was 'great' because it was a little dull at times, but the last season was just the perfect ending after 7 years of seeing if Tony and Angela would get together, and they finally did. it wasn't the funniest season but it was a nice ending and a way to keep things fresh, especially after it got a little stale in Season 7.
Everybody Loves Raymond - it wasn't exceptional or anything, but i think this was one of the few shows that never really got stale. it started to slide a little bit in Season 8 with the whole Robert's in-laws plotlines but they rebounded in Season 9.
Skywalker 11-27-2007, 02:09 AM Frasier - Seasons 8-10 were average at best, but the 11th season was great. Christopher Lloyd came back to the show after leaving at the end of the 7th season and the writing was top notch for the most part with a lot of memorable episodes like "The Doctor is Out" and "High Holidays". I thought the final episode was one of the best series finales ever.

I didn't like the last season much. It was the probably the most goody-two-shoes of them all. I still the think the first and second seasons are the best, because things weren't nearly as cutesie as the ended up being later on.

yeah i agree, the last season was awful and the plots were really lame, even for Full House. the show was cutesy through-out it's entire run but the first three or four seasons definitely aren't as bad as the last three or four.

Definitely. The first season was actually one of my favorites, because the men actually cussed a few times, and the stories were much more mature. By the final season, they were doing stories that 3 year olds would laugh to - Michelle bringing home that dumb donkey, Comet running away, just to name a few.
fullhousefan91619 11-27-2007, 10:22 PM Full House deffinitly got better, and a lot less cute, the show was NOT as sappy as earlier! The last season had good episodes, the Comet one was cool, we got to see Comets view of the world, and the donkey one was fuuny too, like when Danny blew up that picture of his great uncle and everyone made fun of it, then the donkey eats it and puts it's head on the body saying what eveyone was thinking (jack ass). There were deffinitly adult storylines like Kimmy getting drunk, Steph going to a make party, Steph going in the car with those crazy driving boys, and Jesse gets dumped by his band, and DJ decides she doesn't really love Nelson or Viper, and gets her true love back at the end (Steve).

Agreed! I thought S11 was excellent.
Kristen 11-27-2007, 10:28 PM Murphy Brown - some will say it was the worst ever because of the breast cancer storyline (and with the season coming in at 75th, you'd probably argue with me) but I personally loved it. I couldn't agree more (You knew I'd say that, didn't you, roseanne? LOL). Season 10 was awesome. It showed us there was so much more to Murphy, and Candice, than we had ever guessed. If ever there was a show that could make cancer funny, it was this one. It was a really classy way to handle such a tough topic.
I also have to agree with what someone else said about Mary Tyler Moore. (Again, I'm sure no one's surprised by that!) But I honestly don't think there's a bad episode at all in Season 7. It's like the writers knew this was their last year, so they put their hearts into it. They really went out w/ some of the best eps. of the series, IMO.

I should have known you'd reply-LOL. Yeah, Murphy's last season was great. A fresh new start to the show, in my opinion. The season 8 and 9 episodes were definitely wearing thin, and a change had to come in eventually. I was just so glad they changed it with ease, and not change the entire show around.
EmoJoe 11-28-2007, 05:12 PM Definitely. The first season was actually one of my favorites, because the men actually cussed a few times, and the stories were much more mature. yeah i agree...the show started off a lot more mature then it ended. the first 3 seasons were more of a "family" show, after that it gradually got less and less mature, and by Season 6 or 7 it was a full-blown kiddie show. i think the official nail in the coffin was the birth of the twins...the show just totally went downhill from that point on IMO.

You'd think with the twins added, some of the spotlight would be taken off Michelle. But once they came, the show officially became The Michelle Show. God, I have never seen a more bratty and rude kid on television, and she wasn't even 10 yet!

i know...she got REALLY annoying when she turned like 5. the sad thing is, the show wasnt even trying to make her look like a brat, lol.
megamanj2004 11-28-2007, 05:24 PM Cheers - After 11 seasons, it ended w/ a great series finale
Mannix - eight seasons later and yet the show went out w/ a good BANG! There was even plans to bring "Mannix" back for a 9th season for the 1975-76 season, which was supposed to be on ABC, but CBS refused to release their grip w/ the show and Paramount and CBS came to bad blows, so "Mannix" ended up w/out a 9th season, but the 8th season was a great way to end the series on a high note.
Barney Miller - DITTO!

You're right. The Olsens were just naturally bratty-LOL. God, whenever they'd say one of those stupid catchphrases, I'd scream. And then, whenever she did something bad, the 3 guys in the house did nothing but laugh at her. No wonder she grew up to be a brat in hose later years.

"Yay, yay, Princess Michelle!" puke: I'll watch an early episode over the later ones anyday, when she was too young to talk.
mstewart 12-02-2007, 10:01 AM Family Ties - The show was beginning to show its age but it went out at the right time. If it wasn't for Bill Cosby demanding NBC to move the show to make way for A Different World the show still would had been in the top 10. Family Ties in its final season showed the family more and not those Alex repetitious storylines. The sixth season was lame in my opinion.
The Golden Girls - Good ending with Dorothy getting married.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Great season and Mary Richards became more mature and sure of herself. It was slowly beginning to show its age. Saturday nights was not the same for many years after MTM went off.
The Dick Van Dyke Show - The show was still good and did not go color. If it had went a sixth season there would had been changes and possibly cast additions that would not been good for the show.
