I can't see that scene being played out and having no one laugh at it. It was better to hear the audience laugh rather than say, "right on" and applause. He was funny and the line is funny.

Especially living poorly like they did. It wasn't easy to get a job, obviously from what we seen on the show, so James was damn lucky to have what he had.

Those are the kind of statements that actors say to build up to something that needs to be said for "filler time" or to set up a funny line, which I don't like. Like we the viewers aren't smart enough to figure that out. James smiling was enough for the audience and viewers to know that something "wasn't right". That would have made it even funnier.
