This was really hard for me to do. I went with Murphy Brown. It was in the top 10 for 5 seasons, top 20 for 7 seasons, and won numerous awards, including 5 Emmy's for Candice Bergen for outstanding lead actress (which was a record and could have been more if Candice wasn't so considerate-LOL). It showed how a 40-year old famous woman journalist can stop drinking, hold her own, and be liberal. She got her way, she always stayed strong. The writing in this show was better than no other, and it stayed that way its entire run. it took risks, it did storylines never before done on television, and it showed for the first time a woman being tough, liberal, and famous all at the same time.

Others that would come close would definitely be The Wonder Years, because it showed the nostalgia of a kid growing up and dealing with life's rites of passages, done by no other show, and Roseanne, because it showed a dysfunctional family on television with mother in charge.

My favorite's not up there! It's REBA!!! But the only show that's one of my major faves up there is Home Improvement, so I'll vote for that.

But I can't include every show, I didn't do more than 50. And I was trying to make it a mix of shows in my top 100 and shows I don't like personally that are critically acclaimed/popular.

I'd vote for Twilight Zone but somehow it didn't make the list.

^ Neither did Barney Miller, The Bob Newhart Show or Newhart, or even WKRP for that matter. Those MTM-produced shows in the 1970s and 1980s were the best.

It's obvious that you can't include every show in a poll like this so the best solution would be to include another option such as other in future polls

The best show of all time is probably All In The Family, but my vote goes to Buffy The Vampire Slayer - since that is my all time favorite.

There were just too many of my favorites listed which made it a hard choice. But I went with All In The Family.

From the list, I voted for The Andy Griffith Show, I can't believe The Amazing Race, American Idol, Desperate Housewives & Survivor made the list.

I think Happy Days and The Wonder Years are probably the best ones on this list. Who's the Boss? is an awesome show too and should be on the list.

All in the Family! It was different. Nowadays, with all the political correctness, that show wouldn't have made it to the screen.

I picked I Love Lucy because:

* it was probably the first show to adapt gracefully to the new medium
* it pioneered physical comedy, standing as a blue print for future comedic efforts (for example That Girl)
* business and technical prowess of the Arnazes (kinescope, reruns)
*Lucille Ball demonstrated true grit and courage by INSISTING Desi play her TV husband. The network was against a Latin playing her TV husband, but she stood her ground, took the show on the road and proved the network wrong.
*highest ratings of any TV show
*still fresh and vibrant....even after a half century
* the friendship between the Ricardos and the Mertzes was genuine and endearing
*and....Lucy was just outrageously funny (The Commercial, Switching Jobs, The Loving Cup, Return Home From Europe....just to mention a few of the classic eps)
...the "Citizen Kane" of sitcoms

How do you measure "Best Show of All-Time"? Do you go by ratings? Popularity in its afterlife? Impact it had on the genre? Or is "Best Show of All-Time" really just another way to phrase "Your Favorite Show of All-Time"?

I'm not bold enough to call some of my all-time favorites the best. I will, however, say that I feel "Taxi" is the best sitcom (though my absolute favorite is NewsRadio) and the best hour-long show (be it a drama, dramedy, western, sci-fi, whatever) would be "Quantum Leap."

When I made this poll I tried to have a mix of my favorite shows and shows I didn't like but were popular. But obviously a lot of shows were missed and now this just seems like a hodgepodge of shows.

I can't believe Desperate Housewives made the list.

Desperate Housewives is a good show. Marcia Cross owns that show with her character and the brilliant acting she did. I consider it the second best female lead series after The Facts of Life. I am surprise The Facts of Life isn't on the list. It was the popular sitcom of the 80's and a huge pop culture icon. It's reference on a ton of shows. It should have been on this list. Since it's not, I'll go with Buffy that's on the list. I'm rewatching it right now and realizing why it's a TV icon. Definitely the best work from Joss Whedon.

The poll should have included Little House on the Prairie.

And One Day At A Time, Sydney, Cafe Americain, and Hot In Cleveland. And the fact that Hot In Cleveland didn’t exist at the time of the original post is no excuse.

The title should read "What is your favorite show of all time?" Because "best" is more of an opinion rather than a fact.

Anyway, going by years at #1, perhaps All in the Family should be in the "best" category, along with I Love Lucy. Both of those were #1 for several years.

As for me, my favorite sitcom is Bewitched. My favorite non-sitcom is the Rifleman, followed by Bonanza and Star Trek (the original series).
