View Full Version : "Too Close For Comfort" Ep #5 of my Reunion Series
sue z q 09-13-2001, 08:17 PM Here's the first part of several, and I'm not sure when I can post more cause I'm REALLY busy with school and shows and stuff, but I'll try. Hope you like it.
Jo ran in her bathroom and found Rick shaving. He'd just taken a shower and had a towel around his waist.
"Morning," he said, smiling and looking over at her.
She didn't respond or say anything. She just ran to him and put her arms around him from behind, kissing the middle of his back and holding back tears.
"What's that for?" he asked, turning around, still smiling.
She simply hugged him closer and buried her head against his chest.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, concerned.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Jamie screamed from the living room.
Rick looked from his wife to the living room. What could they be so upset about? Jo took Rick's hand and led him to the living room.
On their way, Jo went in Teddy's room and picked him up out of his crib. He smiled and gurgled and she immediately thought of his innocence to everything. On the other hand, that innocence might be a blessing. She wouldn't want him to have to deal with this. She joined Rick on the way to their living room.
As soon as they came around the corner of the hall, Jamie ran to her parents and threw her arms around her mother's legs.
"Mommy! Look!" she said, pointing to the television. She looked at her mother with large eyes that didn't understand anything that was going. But then again, who did?
"Sweetheart? What's wrong?" Rick asked, picking up his daughter. She hugged him close and felt his hands rub her back. He gave her a kiss on her cheek before he focused his attention on the news. Right in front of his eyes was footage of a man jumping from a window in a tall building that was smoking and burning violently.
"Oh, my God," he said, quietly with a stone face. He carried Jamie to where he sat down, on the couch. Jo followed him and quickly slipped her hand in his. They sat together and watched the news, dumbstruck.
That morning, Blair was in her daughter's room, singing quietly to the sleeping baby. Often times she got up in the middle of the night and just looked at her, praying an extra prayer of thanks and protection for her little Angel. Robert walked in hurriedly with a shocked and distraught look on his face.
"Blair? Oh, there you are," he said, hoarsley, coming over and hugging her. "Honey, come with me," he said quietly.
"What? What is it?" she asked, very nervously just looking at her normally together husband who looked like he was falling apart.
"Just...come listen to the news," he said, in a fog and daze.
"Shouldn't you be getting ready for work?" she asked
"Blair!" he cried, angrily, grabbing her hand and pulling her out of the chair. "I'm sorry, just come with me, honey," he said. "Something...something terrible has happened."
Blair silently followed him to the T.V., which was turned up several notches higher than usual.
Blair's jaw dropped and her mind cleared of every other thought. She sat stunned as she watched the burning buildings and the reporter doing the best he could to deliver the horrific and devastating news.
Also that morning, Tootie had just woken up. She stretched and looked over at her sleeping husband. She smiled. He looked so cute. Jeff rolled over and they said good morning to each other and kissed. They sat up in bed to enjoy a nice few moments together. They were often so busy it was hard to find time for each other. Jeff casually turned on the radio next to their bed and he started stretching. As soon as the words the reporter was saying hit them they stopped what they were doing and sat in shock, looking from the radio to each other. Tootie hugged Jeff and he held her back. At least they had each other during this terrible time.
Natalie also was playing with her little girl. She'd had an unusual name on her adoption records, indicating her nationality. She was French and her name was Cosette, with the s pronounced like a z. Natalie had taken to calling her Cozy with a long o. Cosette looked quite happy in her new home, and Natalie knew she would be a perfect mother for her, being adopted herself, she would know EXACTLY some of the emotions she'd felt as a child: abandonment, worthless, unloved... Natalie would make sure she would feel loved and wanted. She was helping Cosette with a puzzle and had never had so much fun when Cosette would jump up and down and clap her hands when she finally found a place for one of the pieces. Natalie would encourage her and clap her hands along with her, and the two bonded. Their bonding was however interrupted when Bill shouted to them ina voice Natalie had never heard from him before.
"Natalie!" he yelled from the living room.
"What?" Natalie called to him, through the door.
"Come here! Something awful has happened!" he shouted, with his throat hoarse and like he had been stunned. Natalie picked up her little girl, fearing what she would find that was so awful. She walked to the living room and as soon as she got there she heard Bill with his face in his hands sobbing.
"Bill, what's-" she started, but she didn't finish. She didn't need to finish. She watched the screen in terror at the reporter.
"This morning, around nine am Eastern time, a plane crashed into the side of one of the twin world trade towers. A second plane followed several minutes later, and crashed into the second tower. The pentagon has also been hit by another of these commercial planes which appears to have been hijaked then flown into their destinations." The reporter took a deep breath and looked like she was holding back tears. "It is believed that thousands of innocent Americans may be dead as a result of this terrorist act against the U.S."
More coming later, like it so far?

One day a policeman saw a man speeding so he took a picture of his license plate.
The next day, the man received a ticket and a photograph of his license plate in the mail. So he sent the police a photo of the money he was supposed to pay for his fine.
Two days later, the man received a picture of a pair of handcuffs.

Thanks for the comments and replies, here's more!
Jo handed Rick Teddy and got up and went to th phone.
"Jo, what are you doing?" he asked, tearing his eyes away from the news and looking at his wife.
"I...I...have to call dad," she said, in a daze. She picked up the phone, dialed his number and waited as it rang.
"Hello?" came a desperate and loud voice.
"Dad? Thank God, you're okay," she said.
"I...I...can't believe this happened, Jo!" he said. He sounded as though he might fall apart at any time.
"I know, dad, I'm just checking. No one we knew was anywhere near there, were they?" she asked, praying a prayer over and over in her mind for the safety of all her friends.
"Not that I know of, Jo, I'm just glad we're all safe."
"Yes, and to think Rick and I and the kids were going to go to New York for a visit one of these days."
They both hung in silence at that terrible thought. Life was so precious and so fragile and so...short.
"You know what kills me?" Charlie said, to his only daughter.
"What?" she asked.
"Lots of kids don't have their parents anymore because of this," he said, solemnly.
Jo began to cry. Thank God she had her children and her husband. Where would she be without them? Suppose they had been there when this had happened? The thought was too much for her to bear. Charlie knowingly listened to his daughter's cries.
"I know, Jo, I know...I'm gonna go now."
"Okay," she mumbled pulling herself together somewhat. "I love you, dad," she said, knowing that at any moment the people she cared about and loved the most could be taken away.
"I love you, too," he replied, hanging up. Jo dropped the phone down and ran to her family. Rick was standing up and received her hug as she collapsed in his arms. Jamie came up behind them and tugged on her father's towel. He looked back at her and smiled to reassure her everything was all right. He took one arm off Jo and scooped his daughter up in the other. He held her close to him and kissed her over and over again.
"Daddy? Everything's going be okay, right?" she asked, with hopeful eyes. Even though she was young and only six, she fully understood the images flashing on her screen. She may not have realized all the motives and the reasons, the religious conflicts going on and the racial undertones, but she knew what burning buildings and people crying meant.
Rick looked at her helplessly. He didn't know if everything was going to be all right.
"At least we're all here and safe, baby," he said, to her, hugging her once more. Jo looked at her daughter and put a hand on her head. She smoothed her hair out and smiled as best she could at her daughter. Were things going to be okay? Or was this just the beginning? Would our country go to war again? Would her husband be drafted? Would they possibly be defeated? Jo's mind went way too fast and she had to slow herself down. America is a strong country she had to keep telling herself. It has the most advanced weapons, educated people, resources, and allies. That calmed her. She was safe, for the moment anyway.

Blair cried into her daughter's hair. Her head drooped in sobs as she watched the terrifying events happen on her screen right in front of her.
Robert came in from the kitchen and brought his family some biscuits. Blair half-heartidly picked one up and took a small bite out of it.
"At least we're safe," Robert offered. He tried to cheer her up.
"What about all those other people?" Blair shot. "What about those poor innocent people who went to work this morning and won't be coming back to their husbands or wives and children?!" She looked at Angel and began to weep even more. What if that beautiful baby sitting on her lap was forced to grow up without a mother or father? Robert sat next to his wife, kissed her cheek, and had his arm around her tightly, comforting her.
Blair rose her head from her weeping and said in a shaky voice. "And it's all because of some vicious and terrible people taking out their anger on us." Her face distorted and her sadness turned to anger. We had to get back at whoever did this. We had to show them they weren't going to mess with us and get away with it. We had to fight back and take action, immediately.
Natalie called her mother, also living in New York.
"Mom, are you all right?" she asked, as soon as she heard someone pick up the receiver.
"Natalie? Oh, good, you're all right, yes I'm fine honey. Although I had a pretty close call this morning," said Natalie's mother. She sounded very worn and drained from all the excitement. She was a much older woman now and wasn't as strong as she used to be.
"What? Were you near there?" asked Natalie, getting frightened. But her mother's voice strangely calmed her, it always had.
"I was going to go to Grenache Village this morning and take a walk there. Remember I was telling you how my doctor wanted me to get out and exercise more? So, I was going to go, and that's right where the trade centers are, but an old episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show was on so I just had to stay in and watch it. It's amazing, but Dick Van Dyke probably saved me from dying today." A lump in her mother's throat was apparent as she told her daughter of her fortunate happenings.
"Thank God you're okay, mom," she said, sighing a sigh of relief.
Tootie and Jeff were now glued to the television as they watched in horror the atrocities the medical emergency people were having to see and deal with. They mareveled at how quickly and efficiently things were being taken care of. Police officers had already set up restricted areas tape and were helping move people away from the burning buildings. Ambulances were systematically and thoroughly going through the rubble and smoke and saving as many lives as they could.
"This has just been reported," began another reporter, still fighting for composure. "Another commercial plane has just gone down in Pennsylvania. It has not hit any buildings and officials are unsure if there is a connection to the other terrorist happenings, but it is likely."
"Wait a minute, oh, my God," Blair said, looking at her husband, hoping her thoughts were untrue.
"What? What is it?" asked Robert, who was rocking their sleeping baby.
"Mrs. Garrett was going to be in New York this week!" she shouted, putting her hand over he mouth, as she felt fresh tears form in her eyes. What if Mrs. Garrett had been injured or...killed?

sue z q 09-15-2001, 06:39 PM Thanks, Ryan! And everyone, too, for the comments!
Jo had showered and dressed to try and take her mind off everything and cool down. As soon as she had gone past the grieving stage for her overwhelmed country, she began to venture into the revenge realm of things. She wanted to blast who did this to America off the face of the earth, and sparing no torture or punishment.
"Mommy?" Jamie asked, coming in her parent's room where Jo was tying her hair back.
Jo looked over at her daughter as she put the hair in a ponytail.
"What, honey?"
Jamie sat on the bed, folded her arms and looked intently into her mother's eyes. "Who made those people cry?"
Jo sighed. As a parent she was at a loss for words to comfort her daughter and answer her questions. "We don't know yet, but we'll find them."
"What will we do to them?" she asked, again searching for more answers to this confusing time.
"Well, our president and leaders will have to decide that. Frankly, I don't envy their job. They have to come up with a way to deal with and punish the bad people who did this to gain back our respect for our country, but our response can't be exaggerated or extreme or else we'll lose the respect of other countries."
"Why do we care what they think?" shot Jamie. She reminded Jo of herself when she was that young, not caring about other people's opinions of her.
"Well, honey, when politics and terrorists mix, things become very complicated." Jo breathed heavily. She knew her daughter would have lots of questions she wouldn't be able to answer, but she committed to trying to answer them and tell her the truth. She couldn't sugarcoat this, even for a six-year-old.
"What's that mean? Torrists?" Jamie asked, cocking her head.
"Terrorist is a person who does really mean and bad things to someone else or to another country. They take their anger out in a violent way."
"Why do they have to do that? Did we make them angry? Why did they run into those buildings?"
"The trade centers in NY symbolized America's wealth and prosperity and economy. By attacking those buildings they felt they were attacking our prosperity and our economy." Jo sighed and was at a loss for all the inevitable questions. "Sweetheart, things get very complicated when people grow up. They-"
"Mommy! Tell me! Did we do something bad to them?" Jamie asked.
"They live in a country where their government isn't as lenient as ours is. In other words, we have a lot more freedoms than they do. Their government may be using propaganda to tell them we're bad people and we're doing bad things."
"So, then it's not really their fault if their government told them we're bad and that's all they know," Jamie said, trying to understand it all.
"Well, people need to really look into things themselves instead of trusting what other people say. Also, our country helps out other countries a lot, especially when people's rights are in jeopardy, like for instance, the United States has political and ally ties with Israel, in other words, we support them. It's likely that the people or group or country that did this is either Muslim, Palestinian, or Ben Lauddin. The Muslims have consistently been against the Jews, even going back to Biblical times. By us supporting Israel, they are angry at us, too."
"But, what have we done to them? If they're mad at Jewish people, why are they against us? Why don't they like Jewish people?" Jamie shook her head. Too much information and foreign concepts were being thrown her way and her brain couldn't handle it. "Oh, never mind, I don't understand. Why can't people just get along? I mean, why don't those people who did this think about how they would feel if someone killed their families?"
Jo sat on the bed, next to her daughter and put her arm around her. "See, things get complicated. People get weird when they grow up," she said, trying to put some humor back in the situation.
"You use too many big words. Oh, my gosh!" she said, jumping up.
"What?"
"It's after eight! I'm late for school!"
"It's okay honey, I don't want you at school today. Daddy's not going to work, so we'll all just stay home."
"Really?" she asked, excited.
"Yup, come on, let's go hear the latest." Jo picked her daughter up and they went back to the family room where Rick was feeding Teddy and had his eyes glued to the television.
I tried to explain some stuff some peeps may not know about, so hope ya got all that. More later!

"Please? You don't really have to go, do you?" begged Blair, as her husband was walking to the door to leave.
"Blair, life goes on, I need to work, if for nothing else, to take my mind off all this junk."
Blair lowered her head and stared at the ground for a few quiet moments. "What do you think we'll do?"
"Hm?" he asked, turning to face her on his way out.
"To the people who did this to us?"
"Oh, I don't know, guess that one's up to Bush," he said, walking out.
"Rob! You're taking this awfully lightly!" Blair yelled, very hurt at what she perceived to be his insensitivity to the matter.
Robert walked back in and looked at his wife with watery eyes.
"Look, I'm taking this just as hard as you are. It's just..." but he couldn't finish. His eyes overflowed and he put a hand over his face. "The more I think about it the angrier I get and I'm afraid I'm just gonna...kill someone..." he sobbed. Blair ran to her husband and they embraced for several comforting minutes.
"Look, we need to stay together, especially during this time."
"I know, Blair, I know, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you or-"
"It's okay," she said, pressing close to him again.
"I love you, Blair," he whispered in her ear, between his tears.
"I love you, too," she answered, giving him a kiss on his cheek and seeing him off for a day at work.
Natalie and Bill sat on the couch in their living room, like every other American, watching the television for updates.
"I've got to call everybody," Natalie said, suddenly getting up.
"No one should have been there, right?" Bill asked, making sure.
"I don't think so, but..." her voice trailed off. "...heaven forbid..." she whispered to herself. Bill sat with Cosette on his knee. She looked away from the T.V. and started playing around with her father's face. She tried to pinch his nose and tickle him, but he stopped her. He didn't feel like playing now. Nat called Blair.
"Hello?" Blair asked. She feared what she might hear on the other end.
"Blair? It's Natalie."
"Oh, Nat, I can't believe what's happening!" she cried, into the comforting voice of her friend.
"Me either, it seems so impossible but it's all too real."
"I know, I know..." Blair continued.
"I was just calling to make sure everyone was okay. I'm gonna call the other girls."
"Okay, Nat. It's times like these when I feel like just like hugging everyone I know. Since you're not right here, I just want to tell you how much I love you and how much you and all the girls have meant to me. We've-"
"I know, Blair," Natalie said, cutting her off as she began to choke up. Had she continued Natalie felt like she might have lost it.
"I'll call Jo, you call Tootie," Blair said, finally, gaining her composure as best she could.
"Okay, I'll call you back, Blair."
"Okay." They bid farewell and picked up their phones to call their other friends.
"Hello?" Jo Bonner answered.
"Jo?" said Blair. She almost didn't recognize her friend's voice. Jo rarely cried.
"Blair, hi, it's good to hear from you."
"It's good to hear from you, too. I take it you've-"
"Yes, who hasn't heard what crap is going on now, for lack of a better word."
"I know, Jo. I was just calling everybody I know to make sure no one was hurt."
"Yeah, we're all okay here, thank God, you?" Jo asked.
"Well, there's one person who-" but Balir couldn't continue. The thought of Mrs. Garrett having been in one of those buildings was too much.
"What is it, Blair? Who?" asked Jo, desperately.
"I think Mrs. G said something about going to New York this week for a reunion with all her friends who'd been in the Peace Corp," said Blair, her voice shaking and a nauseous feeling sweeping over her.

"Jo, I'm not sure, but I was going to call her as soon as I can contain myself. I'm a bit of a wreck right now."
"Well, I think I'm calm enough, I'll call her," Jo said, praying for the safety of the woman she often equated to her mother.
"Okay. And Jo, I know you're not the kind of person for this, but when things like this happened I just want to make sure everyone knows how I feel about them."
"If you're going to insult me-"
"No, of course not, Jo, I'm serious," Blair said, meaning every word she said. "You have been the best friend a person could have. I wouldn't trade you for anyone in the whole world."
Jo felt like making a smart remark, but this was hardly the time to be competing for wisecracks. She normally wasn't the type for being emotional and touchy feely, but she accepted her friend's words.
"Thank, Blair." She paused. "The same goes for you, too."
The girls said their good-byes and proceeded to call their other friends.
"Hello?" asked Tootie.
"Tootie? I'm so glad I reached you!" Natalie said into the phone. Her warmth and the familiarity of her voice comforted Tootie.
"Me, too. I was just going to call you. Our country is such a mess!" she wailed. Tootie had always been the emotional, crying one, but this time no one could tease her about it.
"I know, Tootie, so everyone's okay there, right? Jeff and everyone?"
"Yes, thank heaven. And all the girls are, too, right?"
"As far as I know about, I'm happy you're all right. Tootie I just wanted to tell you, you are such a special person in my life and I can't imagine my life without you being there, joking with me and just being there."
"Thanks, Nat. You know how I feel."
"Of course, you only tell me every time we see each other!" Natalie began to see that Tootie was really the one better off. She always told her friends how much she cared about them and how much they meant to her. In light of the situation, that's all Nat wanted to do, tell everyone she cared about how much she loved them. She felt grateful to have a friend like Tootie.
"Hello?" came a rough, unrecognizable voice.
"Hello? Who's this?" asked Jo, as she called Mrs. Gaines' home.
"Pete, who's this?"
"Jo Bonner, don't a Mr. and Mrs. Gaines live here?"
"Yeah, they're on vacation," he said, shortly, with a flat voice.
Jo held her breath.
"Well, I'm a friend of hers and may I ask what are you doing there? Do you know them?"
"They're my neighbors, yeah, I'm house-sitting for them. I was just feeding their animals. They practically have a farm over here! I've been feeding everything all morning!" he chuckled. Mrs. Gaines had acquired several orphaned animals throughout her travels. Having been raised on a farm, her instinct was to take them in and care for them, resulting in a back yard and house full of unusual but adorable animals.
"Have you heard the news?" Jo asked, tentatively. Maybe he had heard, but didn't want to talk about it.
"What? What news?" he asked. The poor man didn't know. He had no idea America was in an uproar over the tragedy that had happened that morning.
Jo sighed, she didn't want to be the one to break the news to him.
"Okay, when we get done talking you'll have to turn on a radio or a television or something, but anyway, are they in New York? Do you know where?"
"I think they were gonna be staying in, ummm, I think the Waldorf Hotel. The whole Peace Corp. reunion thing was going to be a pretty fancy deal. I think she left a number if you want to call her."
"I would really appreciate it," Jo said, jumping out of her skin. She had to find out what had happened, if anything, to Mrs. Gaines.
"Here it is," the man said. He gave her the phone number then hung up. Jo didn't envy the man at what he would find once he turned the television on.
Uhhhh....would you people, by any wild, crazy chance, want more?

ANYWAY, here's more! (And I love reading your guys' replies, so keep it up!)
"Hello?" Blair answered for the tenth time that day. It was what everyone was doing now, calling their relatives and friends, praying for good news. It seemed surprising how at times like these, during natural disasters or wars or attacks, that Americans turned to prayer. It shouldn't have been any surprise. The most devout atheist would have to admit when he first heard the news a likely expression he might have used was, "Oh, my God." We seem to want and desire a higher power to give our problems to and to ask help from. Unfortunately many people don't know, there is a higher power. God does want to unburden people and show them his love and compassion and mercy and grace, only problem is, many people don't know it.
"Hi, Blair?"
"Hi, Jo. What did you find out about Mrs. Garrett?" It was funny, but the girls couldn't get out of the habit of calling her that.
"She and Bruce were staying at the Waldorf Hotel all this week. I got the number so I'm going to call them right now."
"Okay, Jo, tell me what you find as soon as you can."
"I will. Bye, Blair." The girls verbally parted, but their prayers and hopes and comforts would be with each other always.
Jo picked up the phone to call the Waldorf when Rick laid a hand on her shoulder.
"I think you need to see this, Jo," he said, soberly.
Jo turned around. Something in his voice frightened her. "What?" she asked, tentatively. He quietly took her hand, squeezed it affectionately, and led her to their living room. Jo focused her eyes on the television and put her hand over her mouth. She began to shake and Rick immediately threw his arms around her. She cried into his chest, as he soothed her and rocked her slightly.
"Both of the twin tours have just collapsed completely. New York's skyline will never be the same, nor will its people. Nor will this country," stated the reporter on the television. The collapse was happening right in back of him and he had to run out of the way for fear of where it would land.
"Mommy? Daddy?" asked Jamie coming over to them. "Hug me, too," she pleaded. She was just as scared as they were.
"Of course, baby," Rick said as he picked her up and hugged her with tears forming in his eyes. He rested his head on her tiny shoulder and that strangely comforted him. She held his head and neck in her small arms and he felt safe. Nothing could harm him as long as he had the love of his children and wife. Jo went over and picked up Teddy, who was smiling and giggling as he occupied himself with loose threads on the sofa. Jo sat down and rocked him. She felt terrible for bringing a baby in this world that had so much violence and hatred. She hoped that by the time he grew up, peace would truly reign the world. It was uncertain and unlikely, but without hope the American spirit was nothing. It would have been just like any other country that didn't believe in itself. How else had we won our war for independence from Britain? The odds had been completely against us. They had a better army, more people, more political power, more support, but we had won a victory against them through our indominable spirit and hope, and divine intervention. Well, the odds were against us now, but just as surely as we overcame the British, we would over come this.
Keep those replies coming!!!! More tomorrow!

Tootie tore her attention away from the T.V. when her phone rang.
"I'll get it," she mumbled, still dazed from the events. "Hello?"
"Hi, Tootie, it's Mike."
"Hey, Mike, how are you guys holding up?"
"Not well, but I'd rather not go into all that. We're going to stop filming and rehearsals for the next few days in light of the recent tragedies."
"Good. I don't think anyone feels like joking it up and acting right now," Tootie said, relieved. The last thing she wanted to do was be away from her husband at a time like this.
"All right, so I'll call you when we resume, okay?"
"Okay. Thanks for calling Mike. Bye." She put the phone down.
"Who was that?" asked Jeff.
"Mike. We won't be doing the show for the next few days."
"Good, I don't want you leaving my sight for quite a while," Jeff said, sincerely, looking in her eyes.
"Me either," Tootie said, sitting down next to him. They embraced again. It was all they could do to keep their sanity.
"Waldorf Hotel, how may I help you?" came a professional, but tired voice.
"Hello, my name is Jo Bonner and I believe some friends of mine are staying at your hotel, could you check if they're there for me, please?"
"Certainly. Their names?"
"Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gaines."
"Just a moment, please," the man said. Jo waited what seemed like an eternity then she finally heard the man breathing in the phone. "They checked in on schedule Sunday night and have been here. One of my co-workers says he saw them leave for an outing this morning around seven."
Jo put her hand over her mouth. They weren't in the hotel when it happened. But where did they go? Could it have been anywhere near the trade centers?
"Do you know, by any chance, where they were going to?" Jo asked, trying to remain calm.
"I'm sorry, but I don't."
"Okay, thank you anyway," Jo said, hanging up. Where was Mrs. Gaines now? Could she have been in a completely different part of the city? Or was she right where it happened? When the towers fell they hit and ruined other buildings in their complex, too, could they have been there? Jo shuddered at the thought of never seeing Mrs. G again.
"What'd you find?" Rick asked, coming in the den.
"They left early this morning to go somewhere, before the crashes. But no one knows where they are now." Rick instinctively put his arms around his wife.
"We'll find them," Rick said, assurringly, yet not knowing himself, it was hard to be convincing.
Tootie and Jeff were in the positions of every American, in front of their T.V., dumbfounded and astonished at the staggering proportions this attack would have on the U.S. Jeff broke his stare off the televsion and turned to his wife.
"We need to do something right now."
"What?" Tootie asked, looking away from the horrors that were appearing on their screen
"Let's get dressed and go to the clinic."
"Huh?"
"We've got to give blood. Lot's of people are going to need it." Tootie nodded in agreement and they went to change to go donate blood.
"Blair?" Jo asked into the reciever.
"Hi, Jo. What did you find out?" Blair asked. She had been awaiting this call for an hour.
"I called the Waldorf, and they said that both of them left their room to go out somewhere around seven, before the-"
"Attacks, yeah," Blair finished, putting everything together in her mind. "Jo, we've got to do something, but I don't know what!" Blair cried, helplessly.
"I know. The hotel didn't know where they went. And as much as I'd like to, they aren't letting any planes fly in or any other forms of transportation come in, or else I'd go in a heartbeat."
"Me, too. What are we going to do, Jo?" Blair had always looked up to Jo for answers, for guidance, for help, but now neither of the women knew what to do.
"I really don't know, Blair, I wish I knew."
"I guess all we can do now is wait."
"Wait? Wait for what?" Jo shot, harsher sounding than she had meant.
"Wait for a call to come, either from Mrs. G saying she's all right, or a hospital, heaven forbid."
"That's true," Jo complied. "In fact, let's get off the phone lines, just in case she's trying to call one of us now."
"Good idea, Jo."
"Actually it was yours," Jo said.
"Another one of my-"
"Brilliant ideas," Jo finished, laughing to herself. In spite of and almost because of the misery and devastation of everything, the one thing that could sustain them was laughter.
"All right we'll call each other if she calls one of us," Blair said.
"Right, bye, Blair."
"Okay, bye, Jo."
They hung up and proceeded to begin the dreaded task of waiting. Waiting for good news, waiting for bad news, waiting for any news at all.

sue z q 09-18-2001, 07:50 PM KK, here's more! Thanks for reading!
"Oh, where is it...I thought it was in here," Nat said, talking to herself, fishing around her closet.
"What are you looking for?" Bill called to her, form his permanent position in front of the televsion.
"Our flag, you know the big one we put out on July 4th? I can't find it."
"It's out it in the garage," Bill called to her, not taking his eyes off the T.V.
"Oh," Nat replied, heading for the garage. She began to think how unpatriotic Americans had become over the years. Why do we have our flag out only on one holiday? We should have it out everyday. We need to show our respect and gratefulness to those people who died and gave up their precious lives so that these future generations could have freedoms they never got to enjoy in their lifetimes. Nat found the flag and held it up in pride. She marched out the front door and stood the flag in her flag-holder. She watched it wave in the wind and a few, sparse tears came to her eyes as she recited the pledge of allegiance in her mind, pronouncing every consonant, emphasizing every beautiful word. She was truly proud to be an American.
Blair sat, rocking and feeding Angel, as she went numb with all the horible sights and sounds she was hearing in the background of on-scene reporters. With every passing moment, she wondered how Mrs. G was. Where was she? Was she all right? Blair sighed and looked down at her baby again. Angel made a small murmur, yawned then drifted off to sleep. Blair kissed her forehead and went back to watching the televsion.
Rick and Jo were sitting speechless at the television. All of a sudden Rick got up, fell to his knees, clasped his hands, and began silently praying. Jamie came up to her dad.
"Daddy? Why are you on your knees?" she asked, confused. Jo picked her up and sat her on her lap.
"Daddy's praying," she whispered.
Rick looked over at his daughter, he forced a smile, then took her from Jo's arms and hugged her. He rubbed her back.
"Gee, I love all this hugging!" she cried, smiling. Rick and Jo laughed at her unabashed emotion.
"We'll try to do it more often, sweetheart," Rick said. They needed to show how much they all loved each other much more. It just might be the last time you might see them. It's terrible that tragedies like the twin tower incidents have to happen to get us to realize the love we have for our friends and family. Jo looked over at her son who was playing with some toys, completely oblivious to the events happening around him. He glanced over at her, smiled, then resumed his playing. Jo tapped Rick's shoulder and he looked at her. She nodded over at Teddy as he grabbed hold of an arm of one of their chairs and pulled himslef up, so he was standing. It was a wobbly stance, but he was standing. Rick's eyebrows went up and Jo smiled as they watched their son take his first step.
Natalie got up quietly and made she and Bill some sandwiches. She neded to do something before she exploded. Where did this put the U.S.? Would WWIII start? She shook the thoughts out of her head as she put the peanut butter on her and Bill's sandwiches. She walked back in, handed Bill his sandwich, and they focused their attention back to the news.
"There are varying beliefs as to why the perpetrators of this act did this. All are speculating and no one knows for sure. Some are saying it is for Easern Hemisphere domination. For centuries upon centuries, the Eastern Hemisphere reigned, with the likes of Britian, the Middle East, and others. Ever since America's formation, the central part of power and prosperity shifted from them to us. Others are saying this was an attack against America's lack of morality. The Muslim religion emphasized cleanliness and abstaining from unhealthy and gross habits. Some people are saying they performed this attack of terrorism to show how much they hate many of the familiar practices of some Americans: drugs, alcohol, obsession with entertainment, homosexuality, abortion, and the list goes on. They are against all these practices and they see our so-called "decadence" as a threat against their religion, which allows them to perform whatever destruction they deem necessary against the people doing those things. And the list goes on with explanations for this tragedy, in the true sense of the word. There are other possible motives, our ties with Israel, scapegoating us for the reason for their government's problems, but as of now, all we can do is speculate." The reporter signed off and left Americans everywhere with even more to ponder and consider.
Jo held her sleepy baby in her arms, rocking him, as she and Rick spent what seemed like endless hours in front of their T.V.
"Mommy?" Jamie asked, coming out of her room.
"What?" Jo asked, looking over at her.
"Can I watch Blue's Clues now? It's coming on in a few minutes." Her hopeful, six-year old eyes begged her parents to let her watch her favorite show.
Jo looked over at Rick, who had been sitting speechless for hours. "I think that would be all right. Nothing seems to be happening now, and if it did, we'd hear about it soon enough. All right, Rick?" she asked, to get a response from him.
He nodded and got up out of the chair. Jamie plunked herself down on the couch and changed it to Blue's Clues.
"Jo, let's go in our room, okay?" he said, heading down the hall to where their room was.
Jo silently got up and followed him. Once they were both in their room, Rick shut the door.
"I don't know about you, but I just want to take a nap and a break from all this."
"Me, too," Jo said, quietly, in agreement.
"C'mon," he said, taking her hand, as they both layed down on the bed next to each other. They laid on their backs, staring at the celing.
After a few moments, Jo looked over at her husband.
"What do you think happened to Mrs. G?" she asked, in a quivery voice.
"I don't know, Jo," he said, defeated. He looked over at her then turned on his side, facing her. "Everything's gonna work out, Jo, I promise. Whether we end up going to war, getting nuked, never seeing Mrs. G again, or whatever problems we end up having to deal with, nothing can hurt us as long as we have each other." Jo looked at him in admiration. How blessed she was to have a husband like him, one who offered comforting words and often verbally told her how much she meant to him. She felt truly blessed.
"I know," she said, finally, taking a deep breath. Rick put a hand on her cheek, leaned in, and gave her a tender kiss on her lips. She, too, put a hand to his cheek and kissed both his cheeks. Then Rick broke down. He quietly sobbed to himself, when Jo took his head in her arms and cradled him.
More later! Liking it?

Blair jumped when she heard the phone ring. It must be Jo, she thought. She picked up the phone briskly and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Hi, honey, it's me," Robert said, from his office.
"Oh, hi," she said, disappointment showing in her voice.
"Thanks for the warm welcome."
"Oh, I didn't mean it like that, no, you see Jo-"
"I know, honey," he said. "I'm coming home now. Our boss just let us leave, a few minutes ago. He has some relative in New York as do many people who work here, so he's letting everyone have the day off."
"Good, I want you here with me."
"Me, too," he said, the concern and stress of everything making itself apparent in his voice.
"Okay, see you soon, Rob."
"Yeah, see you soon, bye." They hung up and Blair went back to her sleeping baby and her very awake television, which spat out images and explanations of the attack as fast as it could.
Natalie and Tootie spoke on the phone for hours, they cried together, they prayed together, they comforted each other. Their husbands kept watch at the news while they rehashed old times to take their minds off everything.
Jo was jolted from sleep when she heard the phone ring. Rick had his head lying, comfortably, on her shoulder. She ran a few fingers through his thick hair and kissed his temple tenderly. She subtly and quietly lifted his sleeping head off her shoulder and on to the pillow, as she gingerly got up and answered the phone. She peeked in at her children first. Jamie had fallen asleep on the couch, with Blue's Clues still on. Teddy was lying next to her, with one of her arms, protectively over him. They were a cute and reasurring sight, especially during a time like this.
"Hello?"
"Jo?" came that familiar voice, but it sounded very weak, very tired, very feeble.
"Mrs. G!" Jo cried, recognizing that voice. She instantaneously thanked God for His answer to her prayers.

"Where are you? Are you all right?" Jo asked, a million questions leaping in her mind.
"I'm okay, I guess, for the moment, but Jo, I need you to do something for me."
"Anything, where are you?" she asked, getting worried again.
"Well, at the moment, I'm in a hospital, but-"
"Mrs. G! Are you hurt? How can you be so calm at a-"
"It's all right, Jo, really, I'm not hurt or injured in any way. It's Bruce," she said, breathing heavily. "When the first trade tower collapsed Bruce and I went running. We were right near where it happened, Jo, oh, it was...such an awful sight. I know you've probably seen it on the television, but being there..." her voice trailed off and became very shaky. "Jo, Bruce and I went running as it began to collapse, and I made it fine, but a large chuck of some of the debris hit Bruce. He's in surgery right now. I called you, Jo, because I know you're the level-headed one. I could always count on you to be practical and realistic. The other girls might have fallen to pieces, but I know you'll be able to help me."
"Anything you say, Mrs. G."
Mrs. Gaines smiled to herself at that affectionate title Jo had always used with her.
"I need you to contact all the girls and tell them we're okay, but also ask them that they would pray for Bruce." The woman took another deep breath. "He needs them."
"Sure, Mrs. G, are you sure there's nothing else I can do for you?"
"Just, pray, Jo, please..." she began to quietly weep, but she was able enough to say, "I don't want to lost him."
"I will. Call back when you can."
"Thank you, Jo."
The two women parted, and just as Jo was going to pick up the phone to call her friends of the news, Rick came in.
"She all right?" he asked.
"Yes, she is, but Bruce isn't. He was hit pretty hard by a chuck of debris."
"Oh, dear," Rick said, quietly. The noise of a baby crying snapped Rick out of his thoughts. "You call everyone, I'll check on Teddy." Rick left for Teddy's room, as Jo picked up the phone.
"Blair?"
"Hi, Jo, any news?" Blair asked, not expecting anything.
"Mrs. G just called, and-"
"She called? Thank God! She's all right! What about Bruce?" Blair began breathing normally again. Her beloved former housemother was alive and well.
"Well, he's not so well," Jo began, sighing, "some debris hit him and he's in surgery right now."
"Oh, my God," Blair said quietly.
"She's asking all of us to pray for him."
"Of course, that's all I've been doing. Thanks for calling, Jo."
"Sure. You wanna call the other girls? Teddy's crying and my other baby isn't doing too well, either."
"Jamie?"
"No, Rick," Jo said, humorously.
Blair laughed. Only Jo could make her laugh at a time like this. "Sure, Jo. Talk to you soon."
"Okay, bye, Blair."
They hung up and Jo headed for Teddy's room. She opened the door and found Rick trying to put the bottle of milk in his mouth, but he wasn't taking it.
"He won't take it!" Rick said, in frustration.
"Here," Jo said, quietly. She took Teddy gently from Rick's arms and carefully placed the bottle a few inches over his mouth. Teddy stopped crying and instinctively grabbed the bottle and began drinking it. Jo grinned over at Rick, while he shook his head.
"I don't know how you do it," he said.
"You can't force them."
Rick stood up, stretched a bit, then stopped and kissed Jo on her cheek on his way out to find what Jamie was up to.
"Sure, I'll be praying, Blair."
"Good. Could you call Tootie?" Blair asked.
"Yeah, I'm still in shock from everything, Blair. It doesn't feel like things will ever be the same again," Nat said.
"I know," Blair agreed. She glanced over at her still sleeping baby. It was unusual for Angel to actually be sleeping during the day, but Blair figured God was being mercyful.. He knew she didn't have the strength today to having to be constantly dealing with a crying baby.
"Well, I have to go now, Nat. Rob'll be home soon, and Angel can't be left by herself."
"Sure, Blair. It's funny but today, Cozy has been really quiet. It's like she senses something's wrong."
"I think children have a sense we don't have once we're older."
"I think so, too. Well, I'll let you go. Bye, Blair." The girls said their goodbyes and proceeded to pray for Bruce's health.
The next few days was a blurry of the girls calling each other to discuss new updates, possible solutions, suspects, and every point of discussion in this mess. Mrs. Gaines called them daily with updates from New York and concerning Bruce's health. His health had taken a dramatic dive and for several hours it was touch and go and up in the air as to whether he would live or not. He hadn't come out of a severe coma yet and the boulder that had hit him had dislocated his shoulder and blown his back out of whack. After three days of not knowing what would happen to Bruce Gaines, Edna Gaines' husband, the girls got a fateful call from their former house mother.
Last part will be up tonight! Be looking for it!

sue z q 09-19-2001, 11:10 PM Here I am, Max! Proudly bearing the conclusion to the fic! Here ya go! And thank ya all for reading!
"Jo?"
"Mrs. G, how's Bruce doing now?" asked Jo, calling her friends over to the phone. All the girls had gotten together at Jo's house for a number of reasons. It would be a good chance for all the children to meet each other and the adults were able to talk and discuss the recent happenings, along with praying together for their country and Bruce.
Mrs. Gaines breathed a few deep breaths and Jo could almost hear her smiling and how relieved she was. "Bruce...is going to make it."
"That's great!" Jo said, looking at her friends with a smile on her face. Blair, Natalie, and Tootie hugged. Their prayers had been answered. Bruce had pulled through. Jamie and Cosette looked over at their hugging parents, sighed, smiled, then went back to their game. Angel and Teddy were too in awe of each other to notice. They kept staring at each other in shock, and somewhat frightened.
"When do you think you'll be coming home?" Jo asked.
"We're not sure yet, but probably early next week. Bruce has to stay here at the hospital for another few days just to make sure everything's functioning normally, and we'll have to book a train soon, but we'll be coming home, both of us, all in one piece," she said, laughing. "Bruce woke up this morning and I was sleeping in a chair next to his bed, and it was the funniest thing. He just casually looked over at me and said, 'Morning, beautiful,' like nothing had happened. And the doctors had been worried his speech might be affected, but he spoke, plain as day. And of course I hollered and screamed and cried and the doctors came in running. But, thank you for your prayers, Jo, and all the other girl, too."
"We're just happy he's all right."
"Okay, well, Bruce is calling me. He says he dropped the bedpan. You leave them alone for five minutes and this is what happens," she joked. Mrs. G always had her sense of humor.
Jo laughed. "Okay, bye, Mrs. G. Don't get in any more trouble, okay? Stay away from burning buildings, I mean," Jo bantered.
"I'll try," Edna said, seriously. "But, in this day and age, it's hard to be safe."
Jo thought about those words. They had become frighteningly all too true. We could be attacked just as easily anytime. Jo shuddered and dismissed the thoughts. They wished each other well and hung up. Jo turned to face her friends.
"Bruce came to this morning and they'll be back early next week."
"That's wonderful!" Tootie exclamed.
"What a relief," remarked Natalie.
Bruce had made it through. But he was only one victim of many that had survived. Their prayers had helped, but the U.S. was still in trouble. We had so many new thoughts to ponder, new enemies to battle, new changes to be made to our security systems, new weapons to be used, new dilemmas to deal with... But one thing was for certain. As long as we were united we would stand, we would overcome. With God's help and the prayers of the citizens of our nation, we would make it through this tragedy. No one was certain what the future held, no one was certain if this would be the last attack, but one thing these four women knew was that as long as they had each other, they had everything. They had friendship and a bond that was unbreakable.
Within a few week things were halfway back to normal. America was still in dismay and shock, but people had resumed their daily habits.
That morning on a UPN lot, Tootie was rehearsing another scene for her show. It was her first day back at work since the bombings. No one was in a particularly good mood, but they continued to do their best job as possible.
"Well, folks, I know we've just come out of a tragedy and we aren't in our usual good moods or ready to be funny or joke around," began their director to his audience of actors, "but the show must go on. We're not making light of anything, but we have a job to do, and maybe we can make people laugh and let them take their minds off this if we do a funny show." The actors nodded in agreement. "So, let's start, everyone!" he said, cheerfully. Tootie got up, looked down at her script and took her place for the top of their next episode.
Blair was making breakfast at her home with Angel on her hip. Robert was at the breakfast table and they were talking.
"What do ya want to be, honey?" Blair asked her daughter, lying in her arms.
"Blair, she's only two," Robert said, taking a bite of his waffles.
"She seems like a mature woman for her age, huh, sweetheart?" She looked down at Angel and the baby giggled. "See, she agrees with me."
"Okay, Blair, whatever you say..."
Blair bent down over the stove to stir some hot cereal she was making when Angel put her finger out to touch the pan. The baby immediately started crying.
"Oh my gosh! Angel, baby, are you okay?"
Angel continued crying.
"Robert, do something!"
He got up and walked over to his wife and child. He took Angel in his arms then took her little finger in his hand and kissed it. Angel stopped crying.
"There, she's better now," he said, smiling at his little girl.
Blair looked up at Robert, he was such a good man, a caring man, a guy who kissed little girl's fingers when they hurt. He was so much not like her father.
"You're such a good daddy," she said. "Better than mine was." She looked away and her face lost its smile.
"Hey, your dad doesn't take care of you anymore, I do." He bent over and kissed her then handed Angel back to her.
"I know," she said, smiling at him.
"Well, I'm off." He grabbed his brief case and walked out the door after blowing kiss to his wife and daughter.
Blair felt lucky to have a husband like him.
"Nat, I'm going now," called Bill, from the front door on his way out.
"Okay, honey, love you," she said, running to him from where she had been in the kitchen.
"You don't have to see me off everyday," he said, smiling, but he was delighted by her attention.
"I took things for granted way too long. I'm not going to do that anymore," she said, looking deep in his eyes, knowing he felt the same way.
Bill smiled, kissed her and went off to work.
Rick and Jo went out to the kitchen and started breakfast. He started heating up some sausages while Jo made some oatmeal and toast. The kids weren't up yet and Rick noticed it.
"Hey, hon, do you hear that?"
"What?" she asked him, stirring the oatmeal.
"Silence."
"Yeah."
"Great, isn't it?" he asked.
"Wonderful."
"Hey, wanna get some stuff ready for us really quick and have breakfast alone? Like we used to?"
She turned around and smiled at him. "I don't even think I remember what it was like!"
"C'mon," he said, putting his hands on her waist and bending down to kiss her. They held a kiss for a few moments when Jamie came running through the kitchen, chasing after Teddy.
"Teddy! Come back here!" she yelled, laughing the whole way.
"So much for breakfast alone," Rick said, stepping back.
"Maybe some other time, okay?"
"Okay." He kissed her again and they began breakfast.
Yes, things were returning to their normal state of business. Only time held what would become of these attacks and how we would deal with them, but a feeling of resolve and closure of this matter was sweeping America. We would pull through, just as Bruce had pulled through. But America had to remember, as Bruce had had to, he only made it through the love, help, and prayers of his friends. Hopefully, America would do the same.
K, did ya like that one? Hope ya did, and thanks again for reading! So, tell me what ya all thought! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
