View Full Version : What are some of the things in life you just don't GET?
TVFactFan 10-16-2007, 10:01 AM This was a very interesting topic on the radio this morning and I know we all have many of these but the ones that come right off the top of my head is
"Why do a person calling on the phone get served before a person inside the store of a diner?
"Why do some people never have the money already in their hand once they reach the counter instead of holding up the line and then reaching for the money?
Max Whittaker 10-16-2007, 10:19 AM I don't get why human being have to make simple things harder than they have to be.
Ireneparalegal 10-16-2007, 02:38 PM Good thread.
I don't get why people feel the need to have a cell phone stuck in their ears all damn day. Who has to talk THAT much?
What is it abt people, especially women who feel the need to buy name brand items such as COACH, GUCCI, just to name a few? Who the hell do you want to impress? Why is it important to have such materialistic things and tell the world how stupid you are for spending $500 on a purse?!
I don't get why people are cruel to animals.
I don't get what is so special abt having pants three sizes too big for you and have them hang down your a$$. What I really don't get is seeing adult men who are FATHERS/PARENTS and they dress like these stupid juveniles. GROW UP!

I agree. I also wonder if they ever listen to how they sound when the talk. Doesn't it embarrass you to punctuate every other word with "****" and "****ing"? Among other things....
Chocoholic 10-16-2007, 03:49 PM I don't get why people have children when they can't be bothered to take care of them and provide for them and stuff.
TVFactFan 10-16-2007, 04:46 PM I don't get why a telephone bill in the hospital if you are sick is more than it would be when you are home paying a regualr bill

 well said. I never get people who do stupid things (like toilet papering a house or speeding well over the speed limit) and when they get caught, dont want to grow up and face the consequences
TVFactFan 10-16-2007, 05:48 PM I don't get why there is a $5.00 charge to PAY A GAS BILL online?

Ireneparalegal 10-16-2007, 07:20 PM I agree. I also wonder if they ever listen to how they sound when the talk. Doesn't it embarrass you to punctuate every other word with "****" and "****ing"? Among other things....
Oh God yes. It is called being "uneducated". Another thing they do is say these words after every other word when speaking:
"You know what I mean?"
"You know what I'm saying" - Last week in the grocery store this guy trying to look like a pimp with his bling and so forth was on his cell phone and he said that phrase 15 TIMES IN LESS THAN A MINUTE! I kid you not, I counted because I could not believe he kept saying that. He was in my line right in front of me and it was so annoying to hear him say it.
"Like...like, you know, like...like...like...you know, you know...like"
bingbangbaby 10-16-2007, 07:44 PM I don't understand why some people have an innate need to be mean and nasty to other people, particularly on the road.
I don't understand why athletes and celebrities get paid so much money and why it's more than civil servants such as firemen, police officers, teachers.
I don't understand why Americans are so fascinated with corruption.
I don't understand why Americans don't revere the elderly.
I don't understand why I can't eat raw cookie dough anymore.
Georgia's on my Mind 10-16-2007, 08:21 PM myself!

Millions of people will pay all kinds of money to watch them perform; wear their clothes, cologne, gear; drink the beverages they endorse, collect their trading cards, and so on. It really only makes sense that all the money made on these entertainers, goes to said entertainers.

I agree with all. I mean, c'mon, a $20 purse still holds your stuff and you won't get so mad when it gets dirty or wet or ripped. Aaaannnddd...I'll have $480 left over to buy all sorts of stuff!! I win. Same thing applies to clothes. Cheap Old Navy stuff serves me just as well and some overly expensive outfit.

A good excuse to screw you out of more money because paying online just happens to be convenient for people. It's just another crock of crap spewed out by big business.
Ireneparalegal 10-16-2007, 08:46 PM I agree with all. I mean, c'mon, a $20 purse still holds your stuff and you won't get so mad when it gets dirty or wet or ripped. I hear that! I have never spent more than $25 on a purse. It is the only one I use. I don't need 20 purses for every outfit. I know this guy who bought a COACH DIAPER BAG FOR $135! :faint: I told him, "Your baby won't give a sh*t where you put its clothes and diapers." I know this girl who spent $400 for a Coach purse. I JUST DON'T GET IT! Why????
Old Navy is a great place to buy my son's clothes. He plays just as well in those clothes as any kid in $55 pants and $50 shirts.
dawsongirl 10-16-2007, 08:49 PM I don't get how so many people out there were able to get their driver's license.
I don't understand why the police don't sit on the freeway more often and write tickets. They could make sooooo much money because 99.9999999% of the people driving on it are going nowhere near 55. They are missing an opportunity to take advantage of the moronic here!!
I don't get how morons get so far in life. And they always do. :livid:

Oh that's just what I'd want...to put stinky diapers in a $135 bag, and then have my baby spit up on it.
And heck, purses annoy me anyway; they never stay on my shoulder. I'm not spending a fortune on something annoying that I end up throwing kleenexes and half eaten food into. lol
Ireneparalegal 10-16-2007, 08:54 PM A good excuse to screw you out of more money because paying online just happens to be convenient for people. It's just another crock of crap spewed out by big business.
That really pisses me off. My car payment used to be done at my local bank. Well, they had many of their accounts transferred to a location in TEXAS! Mind you, I am here in Southern California. That means I no longer have the convenience of paying at my bank IN PERSON. NOW, I have to either mail in my payment (no can do for a few reasons) or make my payment over the phone. I pay over the phone and I get charged an additional $5.00:mad:    Why? It wasn't my idea for my account to be transferred out of state! Friggin' morons.
coffield3 10-16-2007, 09:01 PM I dont know why people feel the need to post their pictures all over the internet.:)

 Yes! That is how I feel. The worst offenders have a vocabulary like this:
a so-called rap singer:
"Ya see, you know, what I write about, is what I grew up with, you know what I mean? It's simple, I grew up in da hood and you see, I have been around all these dudes, you know what I mean, and they tell me I have a skill for rappin', you know what I'm saying? They tell me, 'Dude, you can write songs. You should be a rap singer, you know what I mean?' I got it in me to write songs, I just need the chance to prove myself, you know what I'm saying? It's like this, you know, like, I had it hard growing up, you see, like, I know what it is like to walk out your front door and have bullets fly by, you know what I mean? Like, it is hell out there, you know what I mean? You can't just walk around the hood, like, it's crazy out there man, you can get shot and killed just for being in the wrong place in the wrong time, you know what I mean? Like, I seen too many brothers go like that, you know what I mean? Like, it's terrible. Like, I have to see that sh*t, like, who should live like that, you know what I mean? Damn, I just like, you know, like wanna buy a gun sometimes and just blow them dudes away, you know what I mean?"
bingbangbaby 10-17-2007, 12:15 AM Millions of people will pay all kinds of money to watch them perform; wear their clothes, cologne, gear; drink the beverages they endorse, collect their trading cards, and so on. It really only makes sense that all the money made on these entertainers, goes to said entertainers.
No, actually it doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I had hoped you were kidding me with this. But I guess not.
By your logic, every teacher who ever taught a student to read or write or kick a ball in gym class should get a sizeable cut of all the money those students make from their skills their teachers taught them:
Millions of people (for example, "entertainers") make all kinds of money from skills taught to them by teachers; it only makes sense that all that money made from marketable skills gained from these teachers should go to said teachers.
Right???
Just as the teacher had just a part to do with how far a student takes the skills taught to them, so does the entertainer have just a part in how much money millions of people spend on stuff. If you are going to pay the entertainer for the spending habits of millions of people then why aren't we paying the people who made the entertainers? That seems much more logical and cause/effect to me.
For that matter, let's throw the rest of the civil servants in there too...how about the officer who protected the entertainer so he/she could go on with their entertaining, how about the firefighter who rescued the entertainer's mother 25 years ago? Millions of people spend lots of money to watch that child that was born because of that firefighter saving his mother.
Seem ridiculous?? It does to me too. By that logic, there's not enough money to pay everyone who had a hand in making that entertainer who they are, and there's too many people to pay. There's not enough money to pay every teacher or firefighter or police officer for every dollar hundreds of people made because of being taught or rescued or protected. And those entertainers doing their thing are more of a direct result of those civil servants doing their jobs than the spending is to the entertainers. But yet it makes sense to you to pay the entertainer millions of dollars for that even less direct result of their work (endorsements)? So why are the rules different for "entertainers?" (And don't talk to me about talent, because that's the same two way street we're on now). The rules are different because we choose to have it that way. We choose to have our priorities in those places instead of in other places, and to that extent it IS our fault. And that's what I don't understand. Do you?
dawsongirl 10-17-2007, 12:39 AM I don't get how people can let their houses get so run down and dilapidated. Ugh, it's an eyesore. If they can't afford to take care of the house, then they should rent.
In addition, I don't get why people leave dead cars all over their backyard. Hicks.
Sara Micelli 10-17-2007, 12:49 AM I seriously think, in order to receive your drivers license, you must first take an I.Q. test; and, if you score less than a hundred; sorry, no drivers license.
I must disagree with this. There are a lot of very smart people out there who just don't do very well on IQ or standardized tests. I'm one of those people.
bingbangbaby 10-17-2007, 01:02 AM I'd also be willing to be the people who are annoying you on the road generally have IQ's at or above 100.
Hollow 10-17-2007, 01:16 AM I must disagree with this. There are a lot of very smart people out there who just don't do very well on IQ or standardized tests. I'm one of those people.
yeah, really.....operating a vehicle correctly and obeying the rules of the road is all you need to need to do when driving. if you can do that, then i don't see how you're not intelligent enough to drive.
ABlairican Pie 10-17-2007, 01:26 AM  Yes! That is how I feel. The worst offenders have a vocabulary like this:

Max Whittaker 10-17-2007, 01:44 AM I don't get how we, as a nation, can allow our government to spy on us. I don't see how we, as human beings, can allow our government to authorize detaining our own citizens without trial, without a hearing.
It's hard for me to believe we, as a country, are that far gone.
Dutabi84 10-17-2007, 05:26 PM No, actually it doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I had hoped you were kidding me with this. But I guess not.

Millions of people (for example, "entertainers") make all kinds of money from skills taught to them by teachers; it only makes sense that all that money made from marketable skills gained from these teachers should go to said teachers.
Right???
Well, maybe I wasn't perfectly clear. I said that ALL money made on entertainers should go to their pockets, which isn't exactly what I meant. Those who help put their name out there do deserve the cut they get (for example: record companies, clothing lines, trading cards, etc). If they didn't, they wouldn't have the incentive to do business with celebrities in the first place. The celebrities make money off the stuff that gets sold with their names on it, and the companies make money by selling more stuff that gets endorsed by big names.
Just as the teacher had just a part to do with how far a student takes the skills taught to them, so does the entertainer have just a part in how much money millions of people spend on stuff. If you are going to pay the entertainer for the spending habits of millions of people then why aren't we paying the people who made the entertainers? If you're suggesting that teachers, police, and firefighters should get a cut of the money celebrities make...shouldn't they just as well take a CUT in their salary for the students they "make" who don't end up making a lot of money? Or end up completely broke for that matter? If civil servants are responsible for "making" entertainers, it only makes sense that they're responsible for "making" those who don't make anything of themselves, and should be forced to compensate for their lack of money. And to me, this doesn't sound like a very good idea.
While it sounds like a good idea that teachers, firemen, and police officers get paid more, how much more money should they get? How do you propose the money that celebrities make gets divided up? And what should happen to those who DON'T end up doing well in life and can't find a way to support themselves?
Ireneparalegal 10-17-2007, 06:39 PM I would never even by more than 20 bucks on a purse. I rarely spend a lot of money on clothing, but I do have a nice wardrobe; money does not make you have style, it's you, that DOES.
And, who in their right mind would throw away 400 bucks on a Coach..that much dough is a year supply of concert tickets for me
I know someone who bought a $400 purse.  DUMB DUMB DUMB! WHY? What is the reason? WHERE IS THE SANITY?
What I don't get either is my other friend who wants to buy a $200 purse from Gucci when she is getting calls from bill collectors. Why on earth spend that kind of money on something so worthless? Because it has the GUCCI NAME ON IT? I have paid $25 for a purse that lasted me just as long (if not longer) than those stupid name brand purses and I DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABT IT GETTING STOLEN, DIRTY, RIPPED, SNAGGED, ETC.
PZelda 10-17-2007, 08:51 PM Yeah, I don't get the designer purses thing, either. All I need is a purse that is sturdy enough to get a lot of heavy use out of it, and be able to hold all my essentials. I can find that for $10 or $15 at Target. Good deal.
Another thing I don't get is double standards. Why do people think no differently when a male shaves his head, but people think a female is crazy or has cancer if she INTENTIONALLY shaves her head?
Ireneparalegal 10-17-2007, 09:08 PM I have seen some women with a buzz cut or shaved head and they don't look sick to me. They look beautiful. Not everyone (male or female) can carry that look good (I know you do Allison!). You got to have a nice shaped head to begin with.
I too have purchased my purses at Target. Good quality and they last. Until my dad died, he would fix the straps if they should tear or rip. He made my $20 purses last longer than they normally would.
I don't get people who can respond with a smile or gesture. I am constantly spreading my cheer and smile and some people are just so disgustingly mean or don't care. Well F** you then!

I'm not suggesting anything of the sort. I'm the one who doesn't get it, remember? I just applied your same logic to that situation, and it didn't seem to make any sense to you either.
I simply don't understand why our priorities are where they are and why the rules are different for entertainers.
Dutabi84 10-17-2007, 09:41 PM I'm not suggesting anything of the sort. I'm the one who doesn't get it, remember? I just applied your same logic to that situation, and it didn't seem to make any sense to you either.

I don't see how the two situations are related in the least bit, but if you do, great. I see 2 totally different situations.

Now you are just being silly, what woman walks around with a bald head-lol
Ireneparalegal 10-17-2007, 09:53 PM Britney Spears and Allison aka PZelda. Not to mention some girls who are into punk and other things. Nothing wrong with it. Like I said, if you have a nice shaped head, why not?
Dutabi84 10-17-2007, 10:00 PM What's the deal with Ovaltine???
The cup is round, the container is round....they should call it ROUNDtine!
Yeah, that's all I can come up with for now.
PZelda 10-17-2007, 10:00 PM I have seen some women with a buzz cut or shaved head and they don't look sick to me. They look beautiful. Not everyone (male or female) can carry that look good (I know you do Allison!). You got to have a nice shaped head to begin with.

True. :) There are people out there who assume that about women, though. I wasn't attached to my hair to begin with, so it was no big deal to shave my head. (thank you, by the way) There are way too many males out there with shaved heads and yeech... some of them just don't have the head shape for it.
Right now, I'm using a $10 canvas purse I actually got for $5 (I had a free gift card) from Target in the spring of '06, and it is probably one of the sturdiest purses I have owned (it's like double- or triple-lined, it's crazy). If it gets dirty or ripped, no biggie. I have yet for it to show signs of ripping, and it's been through some pretty heavy use.
PZelda 10-17-2007, 10:01 PM Now you are just being silly, what woman walks around with a bald head-lol
Me. :grr: Well, I'm not bald now... I have a full head of hair again, but it's really short (4 weeks' growth). And if you look in the complaint dept thread, look for a post that I made a week ago... I posted a pic in there and you can see my head.
Ireneparalegal 10-17-2007, 10:22 PM I never cared less about, LABELS; if someone thing is nice, and I like it and it looks good on me, that is all I care about; as I mentioned before, most of my clothing, purses, etc. come from inexpensive stores..I guess, I am just unpretentious, which is a rarity here in Southern California:rolleyes:
It is a rarity but something we need more of. Add me to that list of people who doesn't care abt labels either.
Karen64 10-20-2007, 01:07 PM Here's my list of things I don't get--some have been discussed already, some are piddly...anyway:
Why do some jerks wear their pants so baggy that the waistband actually hangs AT OR BELOW the roundest part of the rear-end? (and constantly have to grab the waistband so their pants dont fall down)
Why do some women wear painfully high stiletto heals all day? and complain about how their feet hurt..
Why do actors that play medical professionals, fireman, cops, etc, etc, make so damn much more money than the dedicated professionals that are actually doing this stuff for real?
Why does TV Land show "blocks" of TV shows (like 2 hours or more--several different episodes--and they do this with the TV shows I don't like!) of the same show! I want a bigger variety of different shows!
Crimson and Clover 10-21-2007, 03:50 PM I know this guy who bought a COACH DIAPER BAG FOR $135!
my diaper bag was $5. Its held up for two years so far and its big enough for two kids stuff. I would never spend that much on a diaper bag, heck a plastic grocery bag would work just as good.

You and I being parents, we know that it is all abt what will last longer versus WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK?  I used a pretty backpack when my son was 1 years old to hold his things.
