I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE PRICE $650.00 FOR THE DVD PLAYER AND THE TV SET WAS $60 & UP. I HAVE OVER 3,000 MOVIE & OVER 100 TV SERIES ON HD. IF I HAD BLUE RAY I WOULD HAVE PAID MAYBE 2X AS MUCH ON MY TV SERIES SET COLLECTION ALONE IF I HAD BLUE- RAY.

im perfectly happy WITHOUT HD and all those other useless gimicks that cost so much.....TV was FINE as it was, if they force me to buy HD TV, ill just stop watching TV altogether!

Exactly, the electronics industry is well on its way to making the same mistake the music industry did; by forcing so many overpriced and incompatible choices on the consumer, they will lose most of their market.

Well, I can see Blu ray and HD DVD being good for current shows, but for old shows, it's just a gimmick.

I think the only way I'd upgrade to HD DVD or Blu ray is if Paramount released the final season of Frasier in HD, other than that, I'm fine with regular DVD's.

I am waiting to see who wins the HD wars or until a combo player for a reasonable price (sub-$200) comes out. But if I lived in the US I would have been on the deal Best Buy had the first week in November for sure. $169.99 for the HD-DVD XBOX 360 add-on + Heroes Season 1 + 7 HD-DVD movies. For now though you can't beat the price of regular DVD.

That's the same thing that happened to me when DVDS replaced VHS. I still got hundreds of VHS movies. I'm not replacing them all and I'm not replacing the DVDS I've already bought. This is a neverending dycle.

I think truthfully, it all depends on how big your DVD screen is. If you have a big-screen television, blu is 100 times better, but on a regular TV set, standard DVD's are just fine. It all depends on how big your TV is.

If they discontinue DVD's with BLU-RAY players being as expensive as they are, IDK what i'll do! I mean, I won't replace my tv on dvd collection. For me, the quality of DVD is good enough. Maybe in a few years when blu-ray prices go down, i'll save up for one but of course by then, everything will be on an iPod, lmfao.

I doubt regular DVD is going anywhere for a number of years. I think mainly video aficionados are going to be the ones to make the upgrade. Most people just rebought these movies on DVD that they had on VHS, they don't want to buy them again. It's like the SACD/DVD-Audio thing a few years ago. Hardcore audiophiles upgraded, but the average joe didn't feel like buying their sixth (or more) copy of "Rumours" after owning it on 8-track, record, cassette, cd and remastered cd. Enough is enough to most consumers. Same with DVD/Blu

I just don't think that the niche market is even big enough. BD is a niche market to begin with, so if TV on Blu-ray is a niche market, the studios are hardly making any money off it. The Lost third season BD only sold like 4K on its first week of release. Prison Break and Damages sold very poorly on BD (just look at the sales rank for those two shows on amazon.com), and I doubt they'll ever release more seasons of those two shows on Blu-ray.

you cannot be so wrong, do you realize youth will control the market for blue ray and hd. those video games systems are only compatiable to blue ray and hd. young kids today and those kids parents will only want the latest thing and eventually only blue ray dvd players will be sold and only blue ray discs. this will eventually phase out the regular dvds.

LISTEN once the Sony's,sharps,samsungs,etc. stop making standard players this will only force a new dvd revolution. and the paramounts,disneys etc, are going to love a new generation spending money on a renewed blue ray catalog.....technology can suck too

yep you're right and I'm not surprised. Regular DVDs aren't even going to have the life span that vhs have had. I still use my VHS tapes so I'm really out of touch. lol

Don't most Blu Ray players play regular DVDs?

If they do, regular dvds will still be worth holding onto, even if eventually they stop making them.

hold on to the regular dvds cause who knows if they will even make every dvd you have on blu-ray. I mean there is still some movies that are still only on VHS only and not even Regular DVD. So i doubt it would even make it to blu-ray

Blu-ray discs and DVDs are the same size and are identical in appearance. I bought a Blu-ray player in January and I love it! The animated movies are practically flawless (the Simpsons Movie, the Pixar movies, The Ant Bully, etc.) My biggest issue with it is that it supposedly upconverts standard DVD, but it looks pretty bad on an HDTV with Blu-ray player. Some of the more recent shows hold up (Psych is a show on standard DVD that looks good), but in particular, Home Improvement is almost unwatchable. There were reports of compression issues for seasons 6 and 7, and they ring true when watching on a Blu-ray player.

For older series shot on videotape (80's and earlier), and very old shows that were kinescoped (like the "Spike Jones" set I bought recently), I don't think high definition would help much... standard DVDs are about as good as quality would get.

Blu-ray is indeed great. An HDTV does show flaws on DVDs that aren't as noticeable on a CRT SDTV. I have the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray disc player, and it's hooked up with a Monster HDMI cable. As I've been watching SDVDs more frequently, I've noticed that the picture quality isn't bad, it's just that the "Home Improvement" sets are terrible.

Another factor to note: Blu-ray discs take forever to load. At night, I will turn it on, wait for it to accept the disc, then I go and brush my teeth, etc. and when I come back the disc still hasn't loaded fully. A lot of BDs even have progression bars like preloaders on a web site.

Yes, that's happened to me before. I've rented discs from Netflix that would not load at all. I sent them back and asked for replacements, and they work fine the second time around.

I just rented "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" and I put the BD in. I went to take a SHOWER and when I came back it hadn't loaded completely yet. That's pretty ridiculous.
