View Full Version : Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder Tops Worst Duet Poll
Brian Damage 10-09-2007, 09:33 PM Paul McCartney will never perform his track Ebony And Ivory again after it was voted the worst song of all time. The Beatles legend - who teamed up with Stevie Wonder for the 1982 song - is embarrassed the track topped the BBC poll for worst duet in history.
A source tells British newspaper The Daily Express, "Paul now appreciates the songs hasn't aged well and the word is it definitely won't be on his play list when he goes on tour next year."
Oh sure....
Like all his songs with Wings were gems...
;)

;) you got THAT right!
Ireneparalegal 10-09-2007, 10:49 PM I heard on Sirius Maxim's Channel, that list yesterday. I did hear that part abt that song. Man, I hated that song THEN, and I hate it NOW. What a horrible piece of crap that song was and always will be. What were they both thinking? Love and peace and harmony among all the races of the world?
catlover79 10-09-2007, 10:54 PM Irene - remember that picture in Jay Leno's Crime Headlines book? The headline was about two robbers busted, and the picture was of one black sheep and one white sheep. Jay's comment was "Ebony and Ivory..." Tell the truth, all that song does is make me giggle.
The song was not on the McCartney/Wings compilation Wingspan. Then again, neither were The Girl is Mine or Say Say Say.

 Thank you for reminding me of that pic in the book.
The Girl is Mine and Say Say Say can be added to that duets list. Those are just horrible. :puke:
catlover79 10-10-2007, 12:31 AM They may be cheesy as all get out, but that doesn't stop me from singing along whenever I hear them!!
Hey Brian, what were the other "worst duets" on the poll?

Thank you Irene - some of those songs I am completely unfamiliar with, but I had a feeling the Jagger/Bowie version of "Dancing in the Street" would be included. Alas, I was right.

They should have changed the lyrics to "Dancing in the SHEETS"...;)
catlover79 10-10-2007, 12:49 AM They should have changed the lyrics to "Dancing in the SHEETS"...;)
YES, THEY SHOULD'VE!!
catlover79 10-10-2007, 12:50 AM They should have changed the lyrics to "Dancing in the SHEETS"...;)
They also could've made "Dancing WITH A Sheet" featuring just Jagger and Keith Richards.
Ireneparalegal 10-10-2007, 12:57 AM They also could've made "Dancing WITH A Sheet" featuring just Jagger and Keith Richards.
Oooooooo good one. ;)
diezman 10-10-2007, 10:35 AM Oh man! You guys don't know a classic! LOL!! I remember the summer when that song came out. The local radio station played it every half hour I swear.
I loathed it then. I like it now- just because it brings back some good memories.
Ireneparalegal 10-10-2007, 12:44 PM I am a HUGE fan of both Bowie and the Stones, and that song, is JUST WRONG; and do you remember the HORRIFIC video?. Jagger and Bowie dancing around like two, old queens; it was just TERRIBLE!
I hear that. Separately, ICONS AND LEGENDS. But together, that was as you stated, just wrong. I remember when that song came out and the stupid video was constantly being played. I remember when the song was even played on LIVE-AID! Oh God, talk abt overplay.
Dean Winchester 10-10-2007, 03:02 PM I am a HUGE fan of both Bowie and the Stones, and that song, is JUST WRONG; and do you remember the HORRIFIC video?. Jagger and Bowie dancing around like two, old queens; it was just TERRIBLE!
well, I think it's because both guys were probably at their creative nadir when this duet happened. Yea, both were commercially successful at the moment but both Bowie and Jagger were in the midst of releasing what has come to be remembered as their worst efforts (Tonight and Never Let Me Down for Bowie, Undercover and Dirty Work for The Stones). Maybe at another point, a Bowie/Jagger duet would've been amazing, but the mid 1980's wasn't a very good period for either.

The Girl is Mine and Say Say Say can be added to that duets list. Those are just horrible. :puke:
Say Say Say was great!! LOL. Michael Jackson seriously could do no wrong at the time when that song came out IMO.
If you want a bad MJ duet, don't forget State Of Shock with Mick Jagger.
waichingliu81 10-10-2007, 04:37 PM george michael and aretha franklin's ' i knew you were waiting' should've been in the top 40 of that list. that was a class duet and a great song too

How could we've forgotten that one?? *shudders*
I don't like "Ebony And Ivory" or "The Girl Is Mine," but I really dig "Say, Say, Say."

I remember you telling me before how you loved that song. Hey, it's your choice. If you like it, more power to you. ;) It just was not my cup of tea.
State of Shock with MJ just makes me  God, the 80's really stuck us with some stinking songs.

I could honestly see the phone conversation that led up to the recording of the song.
:::phone rings:::
Michael Jackson: hello
Mick Jagger: Jacko, this is Mick, I got a freaking bloody awful song that I just wrote in the shower, but you're Michael Jackson and I'm Mick Jagger, the song will sell itself

I had to imagine Michael with a very high-pitched voice answering the phone.
catlover79 10-10-2007, 11:50 PM You guys have just got me .
Another really good '80s duet was Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey (Earth, Wind & Fire) with "Easy Lover". Surprised that wasn't mentioned, as Phil Collins is from the UK.
catlover79 01-03-2009, 11:12 PM I don't like "Ebony And Ivory" or "The Girl Is Mine," but I really dig "Say, Say, Say."
:yeahthat However, almost all these songs listed here are on my iPod. :o
MrCleveland 01-03-2009, 11:23 PM I like Ebony and Ivory.
I don't mean to dabble into politics but...I think there should be an SNL skit where Will Forte plays Bush and Fred Armisen as Barack Obama. They both sing "Ebony and Ivory".
70s show watcher 01-03-2009, 11:45 PM  you got THAT right!i must be one of the few people in the world who cant stand paul;s tune silly love songs

I think we all do.
ABlairican Pie 01-04-2009, 12:58 PM Wow. Back in 1983 when I was twenty, I nearly thought it was a profound song with a great message. I was incredibly naive then.
I was so naive then that I thought A Flock of Seagulls was an innovative band
on account of their angular hairdo's.
(or hairdon'ts.) :schmack:
Dr. Thong 01-04-2009, 01:38 PM For those of us who are old enough to remember, let's not forget the gleefully politically incorrect parody of "Ebony & Ivory" as performed on Saturday Night Live by Frank Sinatra (Joe Piscopo) & Stevie Wonder (Eddie Murphy).
A genuine classic. Best rendition of the song ever.;)

I've never seen that, but it sounds hilarious. I loved Joe Piscopo in Johnny Dangerously, by the way.

Some sample lyrics from the sketch:
MURPHY (singing): "I am dark and you are light."
PISCOPO (singing): "You are blind as a bat and I have sight. You and me we are here, my amigo, negro, let's not fiiiiiight."
You have to see it to get the full effect, but it's a genuine classic.

Thanks, buddy. :D
steevo 01-23-2009, 11:44 PM Mccartney and Jackson's "The Girl Is Mine" should be on this list just for this dreadful lyric:
The girl is mine
the doggone girl is mine

Has anyone else ever used "doggone" in a lyric in pop music? (Except Marvin Gaye's "I'll Be Doggone")?

ABlairican Pie 01-24-2009, 09:35 AM Has anyone else ever used "doggone" in a lyric in pop music? (Except Marvin Gaye's "I'll Be Doggone")? :lol:That word is very corny. I haven't heard it ever in pop lyrics, and it just has never sat well with me. ohno: You'd think that a songwriter of Paul McCartney's stature would write something better than just sounding frivolous (if he did write the lyrics).
:dog: :goaway:

At least Paul didn't write that song - that was all Michael.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles have a tune called "Doggone Right"
Johnny Cash has a song called "So Doggone Lonesome"
MickeyMac 01-24-2009, 03:38 PM How about "State of Shock" by Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger
Sheeeeezzzzzzzzzz Who came up with that bad idea.

 Same could be said for the Jagger/Bowie version of Dancing in the Street.

Yeah totally, I like Mick Jagger but I dont think the mid 80's were a good time for him musically.

And as for the video...well, the less said the better!
It's pretty bad when you'd rather listen to Van Halen's version.
MickeyMac 01-26-2009, 08:43 PM Martha Reeves should punch both Bowie and Jagger for covering that song.
catlover79 01-26-2009, 09:52 PM Martha Reeves should punch both Bowie and Jagger for covering that song.
:clap I have to admit that the Mamas & Papas' version is the best cover I've heard of "Dancing in the Street".

She was going to, but then Bowie offered her one of his old dresses and she relented.
