In Florida's Operation, the nurse/receptionist said,(after James complains about the high costs of the hospital stay) "I work here and even I can't afford to get sick." The audience bursts into laughter. How The "F" is that funny? That disturnbed me that a NURSE( receptionist) couldn't afford to get sick, and she worked there. It didn't amuse me. It made me kind of sad.:(

It's called "gallows humour" laughing at something grim, in order not to cry.

Gallows humour is a type of humor that arises from stressful, traumatic or life-threatening situations such as accidents, wartime events, natural disasters; often in circumstances where death is perceived as impending and unavoidable. It is similar to black comedy but differs in that it is made by the person affected.
