View Full Version : Is Sherri Shepherd an Idiot?

We've all heard about her statement on "The View" that she has never thought about whether the earth is round or flat. Today, they were discussing Clarence Thomas, and the Anita Hill controversy came up. She said she couldn't really remember any details of that scandal because she was too young at the time. That controversy became public in 1991. Sherri Shepherd was born in 1967. She was 24! Since when is 24 too young to have a clue of what's going on in the world around you? It's old enough to vote, old enough to get into bars and nightclubs, old enough to marry, but not old enough to read the headlines in the newspaper or watch the news on TV?

Maybe because when you're 24 you're only thinking about yourself and making money. You can remember something that happened in the news 15 yrs ago but you wouldn’t remember all of the details. Also a lot of people in their 20’s just don’t care. If you ask some 24yr olds now when are the presidential elections are, or who are all the candidate who are running, I bet that they wouldn’t be able to tell you. So I don’t hold that over Sherry

Well, I find that very sad. That would explain why the country is in the sorry mess it's in now. Politicians love an ignorant population; it allows them to get away with everything they do. I was in my '20s during the Clarence Thomas hearings and followed them very closely. To me, it seems a civic duty to follow these things. I think it's very possible to be career minded and civic minded at the same time.

I really wonder how much of what she says is simply a way for her to avoid talking abt something she doesn't want to comment on or just talk abt. I mean, she is a comedian and I can see her saying a lot of things simply for fun, to be sarcastic, to be cynical, etc. I don't watch the View so I can't say much abt how she is talking with those ladies. I mean, if she says she thought abt being a pole dancer, do you honestly think she means it?

I wish that were the reason for her comments, but from what remember that happened this morning is that everyone at the table was having a discussion about Justice Thomas -- everyone except Sherri. She just sat there without saying a word. Somebody finally asked her what her thoughts were, and that was her response, that she was too young to know what was going on. I also heard the flat earth comment, which you can find on Youtube. What happened there is she was saying she didn't believe in evolution. Whoopi asked what was intended to be a rhetorical question about whether she believed the earth was flat. Whoopi expected her to respond, "of course not." Instead Sherri shocked everybody by saying she didn't know and never thought about it. And she went on to explain that she has more important things to think about -- like feeding her kids -- than whether the earth is flat or round, as if you can't feed your kids and know whether the earth is round at the same time. The next day, she tried to explain away why she said that, but her explanation didn't make sense. Suffice it to say she's not too bright.

Yeah that's what I was discussing when I included her in my Weekly rant. She doesn't have the ability ti join in and contribute to serious discussions so when those topics do come up she feels out of place because she is not intelligent. she was just added to the show to be a CLOWN and not really get involved in anything that's serous because that's the only time she can't tell dumb jokes

I wonder what kind of a paycheck she is drawing for being slightly ********? I think it sends the wrong message to young people: you can be stupid and get a nice cushy job on a national television show. Isn't the point of this show to have people offering their points of view on different issues? If one of the participants is unfamiliar with the issues being discussed, then what value does she add?

I agree with you that that seems to be what she's become on the show, a clown. But could that be all Barbara Walters had intended for her to be? Maybe this is a lack of judgment on Barbara's part.

A bad example Whoopie gave? You need to go to Youtube and watch that discussion. Whoopie wasn't giving her an example, she was asking what was meant to be a rhetorical question. They were discussing evolution. Whoopie's point was that through the centuries, there have been many times when the majority of society believed one thing, but it turned out to be wrong. Evolution is another such instance where, in the past, society believed something else, but the science has since become overwhelming. She asked Sherri whether she thought the world was flat because she was trying to make a point. She was anticipating Sherri to say, "Of course I don't believe the world is flat." Whoopie was NOT expecting her reply to be "I don't know, I've never thought about it." When Sherri made that ignorant comment, the conversation suddenly turned in a different direction. The other people at the table were stunned by her incredibly ignorant answer, not to mention the studio audience. This is not an intelligent woman, and I don't get why you're trying to defend her stupidity.

Excuse me, but I saw the episode when it aired, and she flat out ask Sherri that question and she didn't ask it in a rhetorical manner. She should have ask Sherri a faith based question since that's what they were talking about. She should have asked Sherri "What if your son came to you and asked if God exist?" Not, is the world round. Astronauts have gone into space and have taken pictures. So YES, I think that was a stupid example she gave.

Sherri herself is aware that she's not the brightest when it comes to the big, serious chats.

Here's a piece of the article from last week's Entertainment Weekly:

And Shepherd is the first to admit she's neither scholar nor trained pundit. She's just a mom who doesn't even know what political party she favors. "I've been doing so much hustling and surviving and taking care of my family, and I feel like I can finally sit up and breathe and learn something," she says. "I think I represent a body of women who don't know a lot. I'm the one who can sit up there and say, 'Who is General Pretraeus?' I'm not pretending nothing."

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand where you're going with this. AGAIN, Whoopi was trying to make the point that entire societies have held certain beliefs in the past only to be proven wrong. That's why she brought up the flat earth question: for centuries, it was widely held by all of society that the earth was flat. It wouldn't make sense for her to have asked Sherri whether God exists because it hasn't been proven that God doesn't exist. I guess Whoopi's point got lost on you.

I agree. You can't use youth as an excuse, especially when you're a lot older than 10. Before I was a teenager, I remember seeing news footage of various atroctities by the Khmer Rouge, and thought we ought to send some troops in and kick the living sh*t out of them!
