NOVARick 09-27-2007, 02:40 PM THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD IS TO DISPLAY PHOTOS ILLUSTRATING THE PHYSICAL BEAUTY OF LUCILLE BALL, AS WELL AS RARE LUCILLE BALL PHOTOS AND PHOTOS OF HER FAMILY.
In spite of the cigarette, I think this is gorgeous.
Mikado 09-27-2007, 03:23 PM what do you suppose this was originally, a photo shoot for a cigarette ad?
NOVARick 09-27-2007, 03:48 PM what do you suppose this was originally, a photo shoot for a cigarette ad?
I have no idea, but that's a good guess. She was doing cigarette ads in the late '40s for Chesterfield, like the one below, so this might have been another ad.
Madame X 09-27-2007, 04:12 PM In spite of the cigarette, I think this is gorgeous.
A great artistic layout. The pussywillows in front add a nice touch. Too bad there's that damn cigarette, but then what else would she have done with her hand? I'd like to zoom in on that ring!
NOVARick 09-27-2007, 06:17 PM Too bad there's that damn cigarette, but then what else would she have done with her hand?
How 'bout someone Photoshop this and replace the cigarette with a flower?
I'd like to zoom in on that ring!
No kidding! Liz Taylor, eat your heart out!
Mikado 09-27-2007, 06:24 PM That was probably originally a cigarette ad shot for the higher-class magazines of the time like Vogue ( which had a higher status at one time than it does now ) or Esquire
Whereas the Chesterfeild ad shown #3 would have been for the middle class mags like Time or Ladies home Journal etc.
I really enjoy all the great pictures you guys are posting.
NOVARick 09-27-2007, 11:00 PM I really enjoy all the great pictures you guys are posting.

OH Nuts! 09-27-2007, 11:40 PM I really enjoy all the great pictures you guys are posting.
Ditto-fabulous photos NOVARick!
NOVARick 09-28-2007, 03:39 AM Here are some more photos from around the same period. I really love these color photos from the '40s. I guess color glamour photography was still a fairly new concept, and the photographers at the time seemed to be trying to take full advantage and explore all that they could do with color. With her flaming red hair, red lips, crystal blue eyes, and fair complexion, Lucille was the perfect subject for what they were trying to accomplish. Then they adorned her with these amazingly colorful and elegant clothes and jewels, threw in a beautiful backdrop, and the result was all these exquisite photographs.
comedyfreak 09-28-2007, 04:38 AM She sure doesn't look like an ordinary housewife here, LOL. Very beautiful.

Ireneparalegal 09-28-2007, 07:02 PM Oh God Rick, that pic is absolutely gorgeous. Minus the cigarette, that pic is perfect! The color scheme is just fantastic.
I absolutely adore that dress. I don't know abt the rest of you, but when I see the pic, I get this asian style look from it.
Mikado 09-28-2007, 07:22 PM these pics have certainly brought a whole new way to see Lucy in my eyes
catlover79 09-28-2007, 07:47 PM Lucy was really a very pretty lady. Those glamour shots of her taken during her starlet days, especially, are great!

That didn't occur to me until reading your post, but yes, I agree, that definitely looks Asian. And isn't that an Asian plant in front of her? It reminds me of something from Japan.
Lodee 09-29-2007, 06:38 PM NOVARick, are the ones in the white dress with feathers (at least they look like feathers) from Dance Girl Dance?

I don't think so. At least, I don't remember a scene like that in "Dance, Girl, Dance" with a band behind her. The final photograph is from DGD, though.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean the final photograph, but the one in the hula skirt is from DGD.

The plant is a pu.s.sy willow (We used to grow them in the backyard)...they are found in Asia ,North American and Europe, depending in the species!
In this case, the plant looks Asian because the arrangement seems to be inspired by Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging ( I took a 3-hour seminar in Ikebana, some time ago<In Japan, flower arranging is practiced by men and women, equally )

Thanks. It looks like the plant is coming out of a fish tank. So many details in this photo, I find it very interesting and exotic.
NOVARick 09-29-2007, 11:38 PM More of Lucy as a blonde . . .
catlover79 09-29-2007, 11:40 PM Blond hair didn't suit Lucy, in my opinion. She will always be a redhead to me. :D

Yeah, on the chit/chat thread there is a thread called Post Pics of beautiful ladies (something like that) and that would be an awesome place for you to post these fabulous pics of Lucy. That would show them what beauty really is.

NOVARick 10-02-2007, 04:54 PM More . . .
bingbangbaby 10-02-2007, 10:09 PM Wow those are some really beautiful pictures and some of my new favorites! Here's some of my old favorites...each one of these has something, a look maybe, that I really love. I think the blue one it might just be the ostrich plume and the silver fox jacket (such a portrayal of the times), but the other two I think define Lucy (Lucy in New York City) and Lucy and Desi.

Madame X 10-04-2007, 02:54 PM I love that New York photo. She looks so elegant.
And it is a great example of the older buildings in New York (I am sure they were considered "modern" at the time!)
NOVARick 10-04-2007, 03:16 PM And it is a great example of the older buildings in New York (I am sure they were considered "modern" at the time!)
Those buildings in the background appear to have been built around between the '20s and '40s, the art deco period and just beyond, a time when style and character were important features in building designs. At the time this photo was taken -- looks like mid-'60s -- the buildings that were going up were very much lacking in that respect. They were mostly concrete and glass, shaped like upturned shoeboxes -- very bland with no distinction. The emphasis during those times was more on efficiency than on style, and that continued well into the '70s. Fortunately, architecture in recent years, at least for skyscrapers, has realized the value in style and distinction and has gone back to that.

Actually, a few of those buildings even look like pre-1920s.
Mikado 10-04-2007, 03:26 PM I dont believe the buildings are real on the pic where Lucy is in NY in front of the balcony windows. Those "buildings" have an unreal look about them (Particularly, the windows of the closest building look totally fake ), I think this may have been part of a movie set.
NOVARick 10-05-2007, 06:10 PM Still a beautiful woman as she approached 50 and beyond:

Glad to help you out there. :) Eventually, while I continue to add new pictures, I'll also add to this tread the original pictures I posted in other threads, like the Life Magazine thread, so they'll all be together in one place and will always be easily searchable, as long as folks can remember the simple title "Beautiful."
NOVARick 10-07-2007, 06:31 PM A slight diversion here, this is a picture of the Lucille Ball Rose. My guess is it is supposed to reflect the pureness of her light complexion, and the orange of her flaming red hair. It's a pretty flower, I think.

NOVARick 10-09-2007, 10:12 PM Here are some photos of the lovely Lucy with her dashing Desi . . .
Ireneparalegal 10-10-2007, 12:50 AM God, those pics of them together, it just emits LOVE AND ROMANCE. No matter the fact they divorced. Those photos captured them in such a way that even though they are no longer here, they still seem so alive. When you think of romance (or at least me) I think of these two. You can see how they look at each other, how they touch each other and the smiles on their face. You never got that feeling when you see a pic of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. He didn't love her...and it showed.
comedyfreak 10-10-2007, 03:56 AM Perfectly stated Irene. I never get tired of seeing pics of Lucy and Desi. Loved the pic of Lucy's grape ear ring, LOL.

Ireneparalegal 10-11-2007, 10:41 PM I can't help but check out Lucy's wardrobe in the various pics you post here. She was a FASHIONISTA, A DIVA, ONE HOT LADY FOR SURE!!!!!
Speaking of her fashion taste, she wore a style of shoe that to this day, I always work hard at finding because they are so darn sexy. They are a style she regularly wore on ILL when she was dressed up. It was pretty much the style back then. Her shoes have a strap that wraps around the ankle. God, that is so damn sexy. I have several pairs just like that. My boyfriend loves that style too. He says they are definitely gorgeous and he loves that look from that era as well.
The fashion from that era (50's) was so glamorous. Just so gorgeous. I loved Lucy's dress in the Anniversary episode where she and Ricky hid in the closet. It was form-fitting (not tight) and showed her curves. I also loved her "poofy" dresses, as I call them.

I totally agree about clothes in the 1950s. In my opinion, that was the best decade for clothes. The '70s were the worst, if not the present day. We've gotten way too casual in recent years. Wearing blue jeans to work? Heck, Ethel wouldn't even wear blue jeans on the subway! And what's with this trend of wearing pants so low you can see underwear or butt cracks? There is no glamour at all any more. But clothes in the 50s, for both men and women, were gorgeous. The suits, the ties, the hats, the shoes, the dresses, the jewelry -- all beautiful. And yeah, those "poofy" dresses. Looking at the clothes and fashions is one of the many pleasures I get from watching I Love Lucy.

You said it. Gee, what happened to actually going to work in decent attire? And I hear you when you state those damn pants that are so damn baggy and so damn huge, you can fit two people in them. And whatever female thinks that makes a guy look hot, obviously has no taste whatsoever. I guess that is another reason I enjoy watching ILL so much. I love how even the casual wear (except for that half skirt you mentioned a while back that we can't figure out what it is...) is very neat and presentable. I love seeing Ricky and Lucy all dressed up for certain scenes.
Lucy in that dress while in Monte Carlo just takes my breath away. Even Ethel had a very nice looking dress in that episode. Very chic.
comedyfreak 10-12-2007, 04:29 AM I agree with both of you on this subject. That's why I'd rather have the old Hollywood any day over the present time. Not only were Men and Women's wear glamourous, but they were classy looking. I'd love to get clothes from the 50's. I have a small collection of old hats that I like wearing, I'm trying to bring them back in style. That color pic at the top where Lucy is wearing the fur wrap I bought on my Hollywood trip it's a plaque and has the year they were born and the year they died, it's really cool looking. My family thinks I was born too late, LOL.

Is that from the "Cuban Pete/Sally Sweet" number in "The Diet"?
NOVARick 10-12-2007, 09:51 PM Lucille Ball had THE most amazing big, clear blue eyes.
Ireneparalegal 10-13-2007, 12:56 AM Is that from the "Cuban Pete/Sally Sweet" number in "The Diet"?
No, that is when Ricky was doing that number with "Little Renita" It is the CUBAN PALS episode. Renita showed up a hot, young woman and Lucy was not having that. Remember when Lucy showed up on the floor and the voodoo looking guy came into the dance routine, Lucy freaked out?  The songs played were THE LADY IN RED and SIMALU. The latter is the song that Lucy was doing.

Thanks, Irene! Later after I posted this, it occurred to me this might be from the "Cuban Pals" episode instead of "The Diet" -- I can hear that strange scream of Lucy's in my head when she's being chased all over the stage -- but I don't have the Season One DVD to confirm. (I have some ooold videos somewhere where I have that episode, but I don't like dealing with videos anymore, too cumbersome with the winding and rewinding.) I did break down last week and FINALLY order the Season One DVD. I have all the other seasons except this one. After watching the "Jealous of Girl Dancer" episode last week and laughing my fanny off, I decided there are enough good laughs in the first season to make it worthwhile. Supposedly the DVD is in the mail and I'm hoping I'll get it today. So I'll finally be complete with my ILL DVD collection.

As for the Cuban Pete number you got mixed up with, that episode was shown yesterday and today. I really love that scene where Lucy dances. I think I will make a thread abt it.

Alas, it didn't arrive today. Bummer! :crying: I got one of those Super Saver shipping deals from Amazon, so I guess it takes longer. I've also got the Godfather trilogy in this package (believe it or not, I've never seen any of the Godfather movies) and Borat (for my warped sense of humor). And there's some other stuff in there, too, I think. About that scream, do you think it's really Lucy? Something about it doesn't seem authentic.
Ireneparalegal 10-13-2007, 11:12 PM You have never seen the Godfather????? :faint: That deserves a thread.
Lucy's scream...hmmmm, I never thought at all whether it is her or not. I always assumed it is her screaming. Do you think they had someone else do it for her? Or do you think she taped that scream PRIOR to filming and then they just played that part while Lucy opened her mouth?
NOVARick 10-13-2007, 11:35 PM You have never seen the Godfather????? :faint: That deserves a thread.
Yeah, I know. I get a lot of grief when I admit I've never seen it. I figure it's time.

I can't say whether it's Lucy or not, it just seems that the sound doesn't match the video. I forget what the term is for when they go back and dub in sound after the fact because it didn't pick up well enough originally -- Is it called looping? -- but I think that's what happened. When I see that, it appears to me she's not screaming as loudly as what you hear. I'm thinking that with her running around all over the stage, they couldn't capture her scream well enough, so had to go back afterwards and redo the audio. But I think they overdid it. It just doesn't seem real to me. The loudness of the voice doesn't seem (to me) to match the visual.
Ireneparalegal 10-13-2007, 11:37 PM I will have to review that scream scene and carefully watch out for that. I guess I am so busy laughing  that I never paid attention to that. I will surely look out for that and get back with you on this one for sure.

The first picture is the house the way it looked when Lucy lived there. The other two are the way it looks now, extensively remodeled. Finally, there's an aerial view of their backyard.
NOVARick 10-23-2007, 11:24 PM Well, I guess even the most beautiful women go through that awkward stage. Here's Lucy as a teenager. This was before the plucked eyebrows, before she had her teeth fixed, before the hair was dyed. And personally, I've never found those 1920s hairstyles were very flattering.
NOVARick 10-24-2007, 03:01 AM Here are some photos of dashing Desi . . .

I wonder if anybody has the pics from when they sold that house after she passed, it took them two years to unload it, they wanted 7.5 million and only got half that as the whole place had to be remodeled. I liked the way it was BEFORE, with all the greenary, it looks cold and sterile now. The SALE pics on the net which i saw one time showed the living room with the original paintings and the fireplace and huge couches, as well as the den which was her favorite room with the movie screen coming down from the ceiling. They also showed that HUGE backyard wwith flowers everywhere around the pool and all the other side buildings.

I agree the house from the outside looked much nicer than it does now after the remodel. But I can imagine they had to make lots of changes inside. Lucy was soooo resistant to change. At the time she died in 1989, she actually still had 1970s shag carpeting, and rotary dial telephones!
Ireneparalegal 10-24-2007, 11:58 AM The house before it was remodeled was very beautiful indeed. I remember driving by it and wishing I could just walk up to the door and meet Lucy. I think it would have been worth getting in trouble over. When I think of Lucy's home, I will always remember it as I seen it before she died.
Thank you for posting those pics!

That's true, she even had plastic flowers all over the place when she could have the real thing like she did outside. She was just NO NONSENSE, too practical, not wanting to waste money she would later leave the kids. Remember that story of when their house in Palm Springs got ruined in a rainstorm and gary changed everything as he remodeled, she caqme home and blew up, he said that aws the only time he slept on the couch, she later had everything duplicated exactly to what ahd been there before, so that cost a lot, which means it wasn't the money really, it was that she liked things to stay the same.

What I said about Lucy and the rotary dial wasn't meant to imply she was a dummy because she was anything but dumb. She just didn't like change. Even with her own show, she resisted format changes she was comfortable with even though that might have been a good idea to do.

Oh of course i KNOW that, she was just more comfortable with the very familiar, nothing wrong with that. But you know, one of the things that bothers me about all that is that she deprived herself, by using plastic instead of her fine crystal, having mismatched glasses and things like that when she should have been savoring her status as one of the wealthiest in Hollywood. But, let's face it, she was a beans and franks type person, although she did love fine caviar now and then as a treat. As for the house, yes, it looked so great BEFORE and it's so UGLY now. It was so warm before with all the trees and schrubs and to think they got rid of all those big beautiful trees, just disgusting. When Lucie went by as they were renovating, she toured the place and the guy offered her anything she wanted, she took the knocker and peephole off the front door. I think it's in her Home Movies Outtakes that you see her next to that door in the hallway that showed the stairs leading to the second floor, even empty it looked good. You just have to see the Barbara Walters interview to get a good look at that beautiful house, it was big and elegant but also comfortable and very lived in.
Lodee 10-26-2007, 11:37 AM You're right, that is in the outtakes isn't it? They showed her outside in the back too didn't they?
SPLAIN 10-26-2007, 02:25 PM You're right, that is in the outtakes isn't it? They showed her outside in the back too didn't they?
I have no idea, haven't watched the Outtakes in years, it was so BLAH! The best bets to see the mansion are The Barbara Walters interview with Lucy and schmoelie gary sitting next to her, she's very candid and interesting but my favorite part is a tour of the house at the beginning. And the interview is done OUTSIDE, in the backyard, near the pool. What you might not know about that house but can see in that satellite shot posted up there is that the house is much bigger, it goes back on the side even longer than it is in the front. That's where her exercise place was and the pool/guest house where Orson Welles and Liza and Desi jr stayed at one time or another. There was a great article once in Vanity Fair on Roxbury street, they called it the best looking and most star studded street in all of Beverly Hills. Rosemary Clooney said the street never had a chance as her and her hubby, the Puerto Rican lived at one end and Desi the Cuban with Lucy at the other end, LOL! Jack Benny's place next door has just been done over also, as was Jimmy Stewart's across the street, you'd never recognize the houses today. I think Diane Keaton's is in front of Lucy's, on two lots like Stewart's. Peter Falk is next door to Benny, Desperate Housewives' Polly Bergen down the street a bit, she was a favorite backgammon playing neighbor of Lucy's, LOL!
SPLAIN 10-26-2007, 02:32 PM Ever hear that story of the time Lucy was invited over for dinner at the Stewarts? They know she's just across the street, yet she gets there last and we all know Lucy was never one to be discreet, so a guest asked her why she was late and she says . . . well, the Stewarts bought the lot next to theirs on the corner, they start this vegetable garden and get so many that Jimmy goes around to give some to each and every neighbor, gary once told the story on a Merg Griffin show, that their couple turned him away one time as they did not KNOW movie stars being a Romanian couple. They yelled at him, we already have vegetable man. Gary then says to give him a dollar next time he brings some, LOL! Anyhoo, Lucy says that while digging up that next door lot, it made all the rats run across to her property and she had had to spend the day with exterminators so she was understandably tired and quite angry.

Funny you said that because I've always wondered that as well. Sometimes I wonder if maybe she was afraid if she went back to her natural color people wouldn't look at her the same (*since she was so well known as 'that crazy red head'*) or maybe even not recognize her. I always thought the darker hair made her look younger as well. Whatever her reasons atleast she carried any hair color.. beautifully :)

NOVARick 11-14-2007, 02:18 AM Some family pictures. The one at the top left is Lucy with her mother, Dede, circa mid 1930s. The one next to that is Lucy with her brother, Fred. I think that is from a homecoming trip to Jamestown. Next to that one is Lucy, Desi and baby Lucie. The others are pretty self explanatory.
NOVARick 11-15-2007, 02:11 AM More . . .
NOVARick 11-15-2007, 02:16 AM And more . . .
SPLAIN 11-15-2007, 11:03 AM Oh i just LOVE the one with the granddaughter, unfortunately one of the RARE ones showing them all together. Lucy used to say that she loved taking long baths in grandmas giant pink tub on Roxbury. And gary said of the dollhouse they had for her in the backyard could be moved to a vacant lot and they'd get two million for it, LOL!
*ClassicPinUp* 11-21-2007, 03:11 AM Sorry if these have already been posted; These aren't the most beautiful shots of her but for some reason I like them. I guess maybe because I like pictures that are taken off guard more so then posed ones. In the first one she just looks so.. classy. The second IMO shows the beautiful, hard working woman that she was.

No, these have never been posted before. At least not in this thread. I've never seen either of these. I love them! Especially the one with Johnny Carson. Thanks for posting them.

Ok good! Yes, I love the one with Carson as well. And you're very welcome :D
SPLAIN 11-21-2007, 10:34 AM I've seen many like the one playing backgammon but never have seen that great shot with Carson, they look great, thanks for posting those.
Ireneparalegal 11-21-2007, 06:05 PM Great pics of her with Johnny Carson!!!!! Although Lucy's hairstyle makes her look older than she was at that time. Overall, great pics!!!

Yeah, I agree with that. After seeing how stunning she looked with her hair down and just a little wavy at the bottom (like in the Lucy Fakes Illness episode that we talked about on here before) I wish she would have done that one more often.

Oh yes, her hair looked absolutely gorgeous when it was down. It looked so healthy despite all that Henna. I really didn't care for it in the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour episodes, too short.

Yes! I didn't like the later cut either. I think either down and wavy or maybe longer loose curls would have been perfect for her.
Mikado 11-22-2007, 12:36 AM Well, perhaps, but, "bouffant" hairdos were the style at the time, and she WAS in style! :cow: Yup,yup!
SPLAIN 11-22-2007, 10:22 AM Yeah, i can definitely see BOTH sides of THAT coin. She looked so different every time she deviated from her TRADEMARK look hairwise, however, she looked incredibly young and sexy with her hair DOWN for the Dean Martin Lucy show, but CBS execs insisted she go back to her regular LOOK.

These were taken in 1941 and from what I read they were from Harold Lloyd's Personal Tour, with Harold and a few Friends.

NOVARick 12-02-2007, 02:08 AM Rick??? Where are you?????
Hey, I'm still around. It's that busy time of year, so it's hard to keep up here. I had company a couple weeks ago. Then I was out of town for Thanksgiving, and busy lately doing holiday shopping and such. Also, I don't want to be overexposed here and wear out my welcome. I appreciate your asking. Big hug for you! :bighug:
NOVARick 12-02-2007, 02:16 AM Just some more I came across and thought were nice;
Oh wow, this is awesome! I'm really intrigued by those group photos. Your description says they're from 1941. I know Lucy and Desi appeared together in the radio series Suspense, and this kind of looks like a cast rehearsing for a radio show, but I think that Suspense appearance was much later. You do reference Harold Lloyd, but I don't see him here, which is one of the things that got me wondering. Lucy and Desi do look rather young, though, so 1941 seems right. I'd love to know more about the story of these photos. I've never seen them before.

Harold Lloyd is the man in the center in the first two pictures- here's the exact description; Vintage Negative of Newlywed Actress Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at Harold Lloyd's Personal Tour, with Harold himself, (center) and a few Friends
The last picture he's in between them; Vintage Negative of Newlywed Actress Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at Harold Lloyd's Personal Tour, with Harold himself, (in between Lucy and Desi) and a few Friends
Here's the description for the sweet kissing picture :); Vintage Negative of Newlywed Actress Lucille Ball and Husband Desi Arnaz Kissing at Harold Lloyd's Personal Tour. They had only been married for one year. This Negative was taken around 10 years before "I Love Lucy" aired.
NOVARick 12-03-2007, 12:25 AM Thanks for this information but the pictures are gone now. Do you know why?

I wasn't sure whether they wouldn't open or if they had been removed. I wanted to take another look at them because I didn't recognize him when I first looked at them. Maybe because he wasn't wearing the glasses I'm accustomed to seeing him in.

yeah....he wore the glasses (which were actually an old pair if sunglasses with the lenses removed ) because someone ( Probably his producer Hal Roach, i can't remember exactly) said he was too HANDSOME to be taken seriously as a comic, so the glasses were to make him less glamourous!
Harold as "the Glasses character" and Harold as himself

Thanks for reposting. But now they you've reposted them, they're showing up again where you originally put them. And now that I see these photos -- and Mikado's photo of Harold Lloyd without the glasses -- I can see that that is Lloyd with Lucy and the rest of the crowd. He looks so different without the spectacles!

All well atleast it's working for you now  You can especially tell by his nose which seems to point straight down.
I sure wish I could make out the writing on the pictures!
Mikado 12-03-2007, 01:37 AM Yeah i see them now, thx :) That's Harold alright! It's so cool to see my favorite silent film comic with my fave female comic (And Desi too, of course):clap
Thanks for that! He looks like a different man without the glasses! Interesting backstory on that!YW, he's probably the least remembered of the "big 3" silent comedians(though i prefer him over the other two...Chaplin and Keaton), and I have been spreading his "gospel" for years! ;)
