View Full Version : Beaver dancing
I was just wondering if anyone saw Beaver and Gilbert dancing...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA:lol: That was SOOOOOOOO funny. For some reason, I had never seen this episode before, so I wasn't expecting it when Beaver and Gilbert were dancing to that music!!!! What was that they were doing with their arms anyway??? That was too funny.
Frnk55 11-04-2002, 09:46 PM Every time I see this EP I laugh and cringe at the same time.
I mean WOW what a dork the Beaver is. Jerry must look back at this and think did I look that bad?
FOL85NatandMrsGRock 11-04-2002, 09:50 PM i laughed my beeeehind off when beaver started dancing around putting that crap away! HAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one cringing. I'm sure Jerry looks back on several episodes and cringes at the sight of them. The bunny episode would be another one.
Jack1000 11-05-2002, 01:20 AM "The Record Club" isn't as bad as "Beaver the Bunny" In fact, I don't mind "The Record Club"....."Beaver the Bunny" gets my vote for the worst episode. That and the very bad "The Clothing Drive" The only thing good about "Clothing Drive" is the apperance of "Mike," Beaver's friend, played by Tim Maithison!
In the opening sequence of "Clothing Drive" Do you guys remember what the kids even talk about? Jerry, Tim, and the most ugly, God-aweful looking, homley kid are walking along a sidewalk kicking a can and one of the kids finds a brown hat or something? What exactly do they say? I try to aviod this episode, because it is very very poor, with the one noted exception I stated above.

How could I forget the horrid Clothing Drive episode? I hated that one too.

I agree!!! The Record Club was a great episode, I was just pointing out how hillarious Beaver looks when he tries to dance!!!

I have this ep on tape...It's pretty bad! The only part I actually enjoy in this entire ep is when June acts like a lawyer or something when she is trying to get out of getting the suits back. That's funny! She's like "Who's suits are they? And Furthermore, who left the suits out in the hall in the first place?" and Ward's like "Me..." and June says "Then logically, who should get the suits back?" The boys are like "Hey mom, that was neat, just like those guys on tv" (or something like that) I like that part...but IMO, it's the only thing that ep has going for it.
Oh, and here's a classic pic...
Barnabas1 11-11-2002, 08:27 AM LOL!! That was too funny! I've only seen this one twice and I just saw that episode. Classic Beav episode!
.:BF:. 02-12-2003, 02:34 AM Isn't It so funny when beaver doe's that dance at the end of don juan beaver? Well I Think So, If Anybody Has Any Pictures Of Him Dancing PLEASE POST THEM HERE. THANK YOU.:)
eyefocus 02-12-2003, 01:38 PM I agree, Beaver kind of dances nerdy, but I think that was intentional, to
add to the character.
Cory:wave:
*InThisMoment* 02-12-2003, 01:44 PM I think that his dance was halirious!
LOL! I'm so glad someone agrees with me! I brought this exact thing up last time this ep went around, and said he danced funny and everyone just told me that it wasn't that funny, it was just the way they danced back then. I thought it looked hillarious. I've seen other dance scenes from the early 60s and they didn't crack me up like beaver's moves did! So I totally agree!
BeavLover 02-24-2003, 09:08 AM Beaver might of looked nerdy dancing, but those "hip" records that Wally and Beaver played were kind of nerdy for the early 60's, too. So don't people usually dance accodring to the type of music they are listening to?
Just joking around, Beaver probably would of danced the same to any type of song. It was his unique style, that's for sure. So long as he was having a good time, that's all that counts.
"Dig that beat Wally,......don't bother me, I'm sailing!"

Frnk55 02-24-2003, 11:27 PM It's on now! Going to see beaver dance! I can't wait to laugh my ass off! I love this ep. Bust a groove beav!
*InThisMoment* 02-25-2003, 01:10 AM I just saw it a little while ago!. he was movin' and groovin' around the room!... he's so suave! LOL!!!
*InThisMoment* 02-25-2003, 01:42 AM did ya all see tonights episode beaver joins a record club?. we got to see beaver move 'n groove! LOL
.:BF:. 02-25-2003, 12:32 PM I Watched It, Beaver Was So Funny Dancin All Around the room, And That one Record: Your Drivin me ape you Big Gorilla, Thats So funny. This is a good Episode. Really Really funny.
HaskellGirl 02-25-2003, 02:39 PM This episode is great!!! I only ever saw the ending before. I love watching the Beav dance!!! LOL!!! Even in the beginning, when he was groovin' the beat with Gilbert, you can tell he was way more into the records than Gilbert was. And I agree, the record "You're Driving Me Ape, You Big Gorilla" was hilarious!!!!
*InThisMoment* 02-25-2003, 03:21 PM i LOVE that your driving me ape you big gorilla thing!
BrandonS 02-25-2003, 05:30 PM What's really odd is that in that era, there were lots of really amazing songs coming out in the fairly new genre of rock'n roll, e.g. Chuck Berry, the Drifters, etc., yet the writers of the episode feel the need to use apparently made up record titles.
maranatha 02-25-2003, 10:10 PM And did you notice, in the scene where June was waxing the kitchen floor, she didn't have on her pearls or her high heels.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 02-26-2003, 02:46 AM I love this episode! Seeing the beav dance just cracks me up. I also noticed that the music he plays on the record player doesn't have anyone singing on it. It's also the same with other episodes where they're playing record. No singing, just instrumental songs. When I think of it, most sitcoms are like that!! I watch the Brady Bunch a lot and on their record players it's not singing! I don't understand why they do that. Maybe they want the viewers to pay for attention to the actors and if the music had someone singing it would distract the viewers? Hmm, that really didn't make sense. What do you think?
*InThisMoment* 02-26-2003, 04:02 PM i'm pretty sure it's in the beginning when gilbert is with beaver just listining to it but it's the same song that Beaver dances to in the episode "don juan beaver" has any one else noticed this?
FreddieFan 02-26-2003, 07:41 PM I think it may have to do with paying royalties to the artists/record companies of the original songs. I've heard that reruns of WKRP in Cinncinnatti have this problem.
bandito 07-24-2003, 09:05 PM Did anyone catch the ep where Beaver joins the record club? Those crazy dance steps the Beav was doing had me cracking up!
automatic princess 07-24-2003, 10:05 PM Yes! I saw that ep!!
Cashodeen 07-25-2003, 01:18 AM Shucks, I was watching the baseball game last night, and forget about Beaver until there was only 10 minutes left! I missed the crazy dance for the 3rd time in a row!
the Fonz 07-27-2003, 01:22 AM oh man! i wish i had those shoes that beaver wore. that crazy dance scene sure was funny.
BrandonS 07-27-2003, 02:06 AM Hi, Fonz. Welcome to our LITB board!
I saw it. lol. I wonder if they hired a choreographer for that, or if Beaver just danced on his own. Opie danced kind of funny on an Andy Griffith episode I saw awhile back.
Jack1000 07-27-2003, 11:34 PM This is a question about "Beaver Joins a Record Club"
This may be a toughie, but does anyone know the actual names of the songs that Beaver listened to when he got his records? One has a repetitive beat that goes "da da da" "da da da" da da da, da da da da" He also mentions to June the names of three record singles that he got when he joined the club. One of them was called...."Your Driving Me Ape" (You big Gorilla!) what were the names of the other two songs?
Was there an actual song called "Your Driving Me Ape?" in 1962-63 or around that time, or was this just a title that the producers just put into the script for the show?
Jack
BrandonS 07-28-2003, 06:54 AM I don't know for sure, but I am very familiar with the popular music of that era and I have never heard of any of the songs he played or referred to. LITB was on during the birth of rock'n roll, and for them to use made up songs, when there were so many wonderful songs coming out, would be a shame. Maybe they didn't want to pay the copyright owners for using real songs.
wallyisneat 08-13-2003, 04:25 PM One of them was: Lying And Crying, And Dying For You.

gamblepudding 11-20-2003, 11:38 AM I always felt a little embarrassed for Beav whenever I saw that funky dancin'. He and Seinfeld's Elaine would certainly tear up a dance floor together :D
1954Boomer 11-20-2003, 11:57 AM Remember, one of Beaver's records was recorded by none other than Chubby Checker's brother, Chadwick Checker! Oh, that's right, they couldn't say "Chubby" in those days, could they?
Got to love those Twist and Bossa Nova records!!!

Corvetteguy 12-20-2003, 12:59 AM Tonight they showed the episode " Beaver Joins A Record Club" I was laughing the whole time Beaver was doing his slick dance moves to that phony rock music. I know that if they had used real songs, they would of had to pay royalties, but a lot of that music was "not" what kids were listening to in 1962 maybe 1942 ? Usualy when they show Wally at a school dance, they are playing some sort of Lawrence Welk stuff. It would of been funny if they would of had an episode where June & Ward are coming back from the Rutherfords and as they are getting out of the car, they hear some loud blaring music and then they walk in on Wally & Julie Foster doing the mash potato (to the real song by Dee Dee Sharpe) or Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and tearing the house down.
donald snl 12-20-2003, 02:22 AM that would have been really funny
GidgetCleaver 12-20-2003, 02:51 AM Yeah, that would have been great. You know they mentioned several times (on other episodes) some of the singers of that day but never any "real" music.
BlueEyes1767 12-20-2003, 08:51 AM Yes, I've heard them mention Fabian & Bobby Darrin. In the early 1960s, ballad singers were "in." June would have worried too much if Wally was listening or dancing to anything much heavier!

Corvetteguy 04-21-2004, 09:07 PM Did anyone catch the Beaver Joins A record club episode tonight. I laughed at Beaver's slick dance moves and how they played and made up phony rock records. I thought it would of been funny if they did an episode where June & Ward drive up and hear music playing and then walk in and the stereo is booming in the living room and Wally & Julie Foster would be doing the mashed potato (to the real song by Dee Dee Sharpe) and tearing down the house.
~*KristenCleaver*~ 04-21-2004, 09:41 PM Haha, funny! I always laugh when Beaver names the record, "You're Diving Me Ape You Big Gorilla!" or something like that. LOL.
Michael [hXc] 04-21-2004, 10:09 PM I love all of that old music. Much better than the stuff now. Maybe I'm from the wrong decade! Well, I have made some great friends in this one.
"You're Driving Me Ape You Big Gorilla!" lol!
duluthduke 04-22-2004, 07:46 PM Or if they had played the "real" Twist by Chubby Checker, NOT Chadwick!:D
1954Boomer 04-23-2004, 12:19 AM Yeah, it's funny that Beaver couldn't say Chubby Checker, and instead had to opt for Chubby Chadwick. Lol! Strange, too, because other famous musical artists of the time had been mentioned on the show, such as Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, and Fabian. Why not Chubby Checker? Maybe Chubby didn't need the plug after all. Either that, or he couldn't affort to have his full name mentioned. Lol!
duluthduke 04-23-2004, 12:34 AM Dick Clark was behind Chubby Checker, and maybe they wouldn't let them use his name. Of course, the original "Twist" was by Hank Ballard and The Midnighters, and was almost identical to Checker's cover!:)
Tap Dancer 09-22-2007, 02:21 PM The episode where Beaver joins the record club was on TV Land yesterday and I finally saw it. He kinda hopped around more than anything, but watching him snap his fingers out of rhythm was what cracked me up.
Waterston_Fan 09-22-2007, 04:00 PM Yeah, I thought it was funny....
I liked how when Beaver was in trouble, he went to see Ward.
I didn't like him yelling to his dad at the end of the show about the company trying to get him to give more money...
Uh, hello Beaver, once you start something, they want more...
Ireneparalegal 09-22-2007, 04:03 PM Oh I missed it. That is one of my fave episodes. I actually think it is my FAVE EPISODE OF ALL THE BEAVER EPISODES. It cracks me up how Beaver dances away, and is so oblivious to all the bill reminders he gets in the mail along with his new record. He just stashes them in that drawer and never even looks at them.

The thing that gets me is how snoopy June didn't discover the notices. She could find a grain of sand under the bed, but never noticed the huge stack of bills in Beaver's drawer, and also never noticed all the mail he was getting.
If she snooped as usual, they could have nipped the problem in the bud. C'mon, June. The family survives on your unwanted invasions of privacy! ;)
Waterston_Fan 09-23-2007, 05:54 PM Never thought about that as to June snooping but it was enough that she would get the records in the mail.. It should have told her something.

The scriptwriters needed a story line and this is how the episode played out. I guess we can assume June figured Beaver would pay the bills for his records, so she didn't go snooping in his drawer. If I recall, Eddie Haskell comes over and he's the one who finds the bills in Beaver's drawer. Wally knew that Beaver was ignoring the invoices, but I believe he didn't tell June or Ward about it. I have to watch my DVD and see again how the episode is resolved. This episode is somewhat similar to BEAVER'S LIBRARY BOOK. One would think Beaver had learned his lesson from that predicament!
As far as June being snoopy, in days of yore most Mom's stayed home during the day and did the housework and while cleaning would inevitably look thru their kids stuff and find things they've been hiding. That's just how it used to be. It's still like that today, but to a lesser degree. Kids get away with more nowadays, parents aren't usually watching em so close.

Growing up us kids in my family we always knew that if it was in our rooms it wasn't hidden from our parents. My dad's philosophy was until you started working, paying rent, paying bills and had your own place then you can whine about invasion of privacy.

She did get suspicious and went to Ward about it, but Ward said he promised Beaver he wouldn't interfere with how Beaver handled his money.

It was Wally who found the invoices in the mail, and you're right he didn't tell the parents.
It also seems sort of similar to the Modeling Agency and the Accordion episodes.
UMfan77 10-11-2007, 02:41 PM That accordion episode is so funny!! Everytime I think about that accordion falling down the stairs, I laugh. That has to be the funniest scene of LITB! Beaver definately likes those mail order deals!

I agree:)
diesteldorf 04-17-2013, 02:19 AM The passing of Frank Bank put 'Leave it to Beaver' at the front of my mind and caused me to recall one of my favorite episodes--primarily because, as a Generation Xer, mid 30's, I could completely relate to it. I was probably around 14 when i first encountered the BMG ad for 12 or 13 CDs for a penny or some such offer.
Both BMG and Columbia House seemed to be quite prolific with their advertising in the 1990s.
Truthfully, if you played the game right, cycled accounts, canceled, rejoined etc, it was relatively easy to get decent prices on music, prior to the era of Napster, Itunes, Amazon digital etc.
Just like Beaver, I neglected to return some mailers and received unwanted shipments. However, to their credit, they allowed you to refuse the shipments and send them back.
I remember when I received a letter from BMG that they had taken the liberty of canceling my account due to too many returns. I even wrote them a letter asking them to forgive me since I had yet to redeem some of my free selections :)
As far as quality goes, some people said they club printings were not of the same caliber as the ones you buy retail. Truthfully, I never noticed a difference, but I don't consider myself a true audiofile.
Prior to the 'Leave it to Beaver' episode, I never knew these CD clubs were nothing new and owed their existence to the record clubs before them.
Did anyone else ever join a record or CD club? If you joined a record club, how was the quality compared to retail albums?
It looks like the records Beaver is playing are 45s. Does anyone know if the record clubs also sold 33s? I am assuming that 45s normally had only a couple songs, while 33s contained the traditional complete album.
LittleRickyII 04-17-2013, 02:19 PM 45s contained one song on the front (the A side), and another on the back. You bought the record for the A side recording as the B side was often less known or unknown. The A side recording would be the song getting heavy airplay on the radio. It was only a rare case when a B side song ended up being a hit, too. Albums played at 33s.
And yes, I remember getting sucked into the BMG club. I didn't understand exactly how it worked until I started getting unwanted CDs (or maybe it was cassette tapes) shipped to me.
loaferman 04-17-2013, 02:42 PM In the 70's-90's I belonged at various times to BMG. I never saw a 45 RPM offered, always full length LP's, 8 tracks, then cassettes and CD's. Returning the mailings pre-internet was a hassle and you often couldn't keep track of them. I'm sure they had lots of people just pay full price for unwanted CD's. You could refuse delivery but sooner or later they would claim they did not get one back and you were in a hassle. Recording artists hated these clubs because they got few if any royalties and I suspect BMG cost them a ton of money.

stevea 01-31-2020, 09:34 AM Chubby Chadwick and Billy Baxter...Jeez! Beaver jumping around like that--he looked like he was doing Beaver the Bunny!
I found several old threads on this episode and put them all together. Interesting to read all the old comments. Wonder what happened to all these people, so many names I've never seen before.
I liked post 59. It never occurred to me that June didn't find all that record club mail and blab it to Ward.
Scrabjan1 01-31-2020, 10:55 AM You are so right. You would think that June, having all that time to snoop, would have found all the papers that Beaver shoved in his drawer. She is always putting away their clean clothes and he gets these record packages over many weeks. He acted like a complete immature kid not realizing you have to read this stuff like Wally said. He deserved to get a registered letter from the company. Reminds me of the time he got the $30 fee from the modeling company and then all those letters. Wow I guess $17.60 was quite a bit of money in 1962 even though Beaver says he's loaded. What a nerd. Once again Gilbert gets Beaver to join the record club and gets into debt. Anyone notice how they use real money on the show and most other shows use bogus bills. That looked like a real $1 dollar bill.
I just saw a picture on this thread of Beaver in the bunny suit. I had no idea the bunny suit was PINK? I mean at least have it be light brown.
stevea 01-31-2020, 11:10 AM Me neither; I thought it was white. I wonder where they got that photo.
Boy he would have really been given the business. "Cut it out Gilbert snd Whitey."

Scrabjan1 01-31-2020, 10:37 PM Elaine is funny as hell dancing but Beaver and Johnny Crawford on Mr. Ed are really cringeworthy.
stevea 01-31-2020, 10:44 PM I haven't seen Elaine for awhile but IIRC she was jerking her head up and down and it was really funny, and bad. And she didn't even know she was bad (till Jerry told her??)
Never saw Crawford on Mr. Ed. He certainly didn't do any dancing in North Fork!
Cringeworthy--a good description of Beaver's "dance." "I'm sailin'."
Haskell 01-31-2020, 11:35 PM Oh my gosh Beaver’s dancing was something else. I loved how into it he got.
Scrabjan1 02-01-2020, 10:43 PM When I see them all twisting in Party Spoiler I wonder how I must have looked when dancing to disco. I wonder how kids dance now. We went from Charleston to ballroom to jitterbug to twisting to disco to slamming to breaking to who knows.

Man, that music from those record club albums was so lame. I wonder how many teens watching that episode for the first time in late 1962 would have scoffed or laughed at loud when they saw Beaver grooving to it.
Who other than a sheltered kid on a short leash would think corporate canned stuff like that was cool?

Scrabjan1 02-10-2020, 12:16 PM Beaver in those pants with a tight belt didn’t help either. What a nerd! Would have loved to have seen Wally twisting alone. We did see him dance in Party Spoiler.
stevea 02-11-2020, 09:52 PM In Lumpy's Scholarship didn't we hear that #1 Billy Baxter hit, playing from the living room, in the kitchen? If it wasn't that, it was some other generic public domain thing.
Scrabjan1 02-12-2020, 11:55 AM Yup Wally borrowed Beaver’s Marathon Record Club LP’s. I think the first one Beaver plays is what they play in Lumpy’s Scholarship. Probably Sighing, Crying and Dying For You. I could swear they’re also playing that at the malt shop in Beaver the Hero.
stevea 02-12-2020, 01:48 PM Yep, the malt shop juke box was stocked from the same record club.
