View Full Version : Can someone please tell my mother that it's no such thing as.............
TVFactFan 09-21-2007, 02:17 PM a $100,000 job in the job section of the newspaper?? I keep telling her it's not REAL and she says why wouldn;t it be real? Why would a $125,000 job be advertised in the city paper? Are we all in agreement on this???
OH Nuts! 09-21-2007, 02:35 PM Not completely. In New York City you would see such a thing--but then New York has a much higher standard of living that practically all other U.S. cities
In a smaller U.S. City a job paying 40-60K would have the same buying power as 100K in NYC.
Ireneparalegal 09-21-2007, 02:38 PM Tell her to call me.
TVFactFan 09-21-2007, 02:56 PM Tell her to call me.
Yes, please explain that no company advertises that kind of salary, someone in the company would get it-lol

I can't speak for large cities like New York or Los Angeles, I have never seen the want ads for a large city like that, so maybe someone like Brian D. or Tara can tell us, but I know that you won't find ads like that in general. Usually if you see an ad that advertises "BIG EARNINGS" etc. it is usually a gimmick or some sort of stupid job where it COSTS YOU MONEY.
Usually big firms and/or companies don't advertise big time jobs in the paper.

That's the point I was trying to make-lol
OH Nuts! 09-21-2007, 03:40 PM I guess the point I'm trying to make is that its very unlikely but not impossible. Most 6 figure jobs go thru headhunters.
.
In any event, classifieds are not the best source for most kinds of jobs. Networking and job fairs tend to work far better.
Janice 09-21-2007, 08:02 PM I live in a major city, and it's not happening here. No way, Jose.
TVFactFan 09-21-2007, 08:07 PM I live in a major city, and it's not happening here. No way, Jose.
It's happening no where-lol
Ireneparalegal 09-21-2007, 08:07 PM I was going to say usually jobs/careers like that are jobs you work your way up to. You work for a company or firm where you work yourself up the ladder into a better position with better pay. Just like in a law firm where an attorney starts out just as an assistant attorney and eventually work your way up to partner. There are other examples, but that is one I know best.
Mikado 09-21-2007, 08:15 PM This is probably a scam where they ask for money after which they send you a pamphlet with lists of top 100 companies that MIGHT be hiring, but, theres no guarantees for the $10 or w/e you paid for the pamphlet.
( Ive seen this scam before, usually its top 100 companies, jobs in Alaska or on a cruise ship and in all cases, they arent promissing you anything , but some information! )
Ireneparalegal 09-21-2007, 08:21 PM I think Solomon is saying that his mom wants him to look for a job in the paper that pays over 100 g's. Am I right Solomon?
Lex Luthor 09-21-2007, 09:26 PM Hey Sol
If she finds one send me the posting
I could use 100+ per year
Janice 09-21-2007, 09:29 PM A couple of years ago, like an idiot, I responded to one of those ads about working at home and making a million a week. I called, and the woman told me that I'd have to buy a book of employers or some such stupid thing, for a small price of $350. Gee, think it was a scam?

Lex Luthor 09-21-2007, 09:32 PM My roommate tried that making thiousands a week stuufing envelopes at home
Total scam (duh!, I warned her)
Basically she paid $95 for a photocopy of a paper how to place ads in the paper and do what they just did to her
coffield3 09-21-2007, 09:33 PM Unless you live in never never land!
Janice 09-21-2007, 10:01 PM  No way, I can't believe you did that.
 All I did was call, Irene. I figured I'm home, make a few bucks. Fat chance on that. It's too bad that I can't work part-time at home. I worked in corporate for 20 years, and have excellent skills.
Mikado 09-21-2007, 10:04 PM $350 huh? I knew how the scam worked, i didnt realise they asked for THAT much money....explains how they can afford to place all those ads

I don't know how it worked. The minute I was told I had to shell out money for a job, I stopped listening, lol.
TVFactFan 09-21-2007, 11:47 PM I think Solomon is saying that his mom wants him to look for a job in the paper that pays over 100 g's. Am I right Solomon?
No it wasn't that-lol She just never saw a salary that high being posted in the paper
Mikado 09-22-2007, 05:46 AM I don't know how it worked. The minute I was told I had to shell out money for a job, I stopped listening, lol.
Good move!!!
catlover79 09-22-2007, 11:11 AM As the old saying goes: "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

I'm going to write that statement on a piece of paper and staple it to my WALL-lol
OH Nuts! 09-22-2007, 08:48 PM Sigh, I should have kept NYC out of this, it is big and expensive--two variables that skew things. Solomon, if NYC is excluded you would be right. Some examples of price differences betw major cities:
$50K salary in:
Boston is $75,437 in Manhattan/NYC
LA is $64,260 in Manhattan/NYC
Chicago is $87,054 in Manhattan/NYC
Philly is $109,847 in Manhattan/NYC
Pittsburgh is $82,464 in Manhattan/NYC
The differences for rent are even more pronounced--between 2 and 3 times higher.

I know what you mean. You have worked just like me in the business world and we have some skills that will remain with us for life. When my life turned around after hurting my back, it took a long while to say, "Ok, now what?" It can be great doing things from home. I have read so many articles of women who started a business or did some part-time stuff at home. It's just a matter of finding something legit and something that you can enjoy doing.
