View Full Version : Boring Storytellers
catlover79 09-17-2007, 06:10 PM How many sitcom characters were known for their boring (and old) stories? Here are a few:
Inspector Luger (Barney Miller)
Ted Baxter (Mary Tyler Moore)
Gov. Gatling (Benson)
Rose Nylund (Golden Girls)
In other words, if you hear the phrases "me and Foster, Kleiner and Brown", "St. Olaf", and/or "it all started in a 5000 radio station in Fresno" - LOOK OUT!!
Mikado 09-17-2007, 06:14 PM Grampa Simpson- the Simpsons
JulieSomoski 09-17-2007, 06:25 PM Mr. Roper on Three's Company would always tell his old war stories that made everyone fall asleep-LOL
FactoryGirl 09-17-2007, 07:35 PM Can Grandpa Huxtable be counted? I mean good lord, that man told THE most snooze fest stories that put me to sleep. His stories was so not enjoyable.
I much prefer Rose Nyland's stories over his, at least hers was some what exciting!
catlover79 09-17-2007, 07:44 PM I forgot about Rolly Forbes (Amen). He would drone on and on, only pausing to take off his glasses and wipe them - sometimes several times during a single sentence!!
Mikado 09-17-2007, 07:44 PM And of course the worst offender was a woman...Edith Bunker (AITF)
catlover79 09-17-2007, 07:52 PM Phyllis Lindstrom (MTM) usually told pretty boring tales herself - not unlike Ted Baxter. The two of them were so dense and full of themselves!
Then there's Les Nessman (WKRP)...enough said.
wkomorow 09-17-2007, 08:42 PM No contest - Frank Pickle from the Vicar of Dibley. There was even a tabloid spread on him entitled "Is this the most boring man on earth?"
sunshinefizzy 09-17-2007, 08:47 PM Chrissy Snow gets my vote. She was the only one who got the ponit of them!!!
I have not watched All in the Family in a while but I remember watching the ep which Edith talks about this dude and he had to be driven to the hospital in this ambulance and the paramedics forgot to shut the doors!!! I sometimes think about that when I have a ****ty day and need a laugh.

ThomasE 12-28-2009, 05:06 PM Can you blame them??
No. Not really. Whitley Gilbert was another.
Retro4Life 12-28-2009, 06:05 PM Actually I think it wasn't so much that Edith Bunker's stories were boring per se, it was more the way she told them. She often got sidetracked and combined stories, and included details that really didn't have much bearing on the story. I think that's what frustrated Archie so much.
But you could argue that Edith's method of telling stories was part of her charm, too. I think Edith loved the past and tried to include as much of it as she could whenever she got a chance. There's something kind of sweet about that. :)
catlover79 12-28-2009, 07:08 PM Dr. Bob Hartley (The Bob Newhart Show) told his fair share of boring stories as well. Every time he said, "Emily, sit down" - it's like, here we go again!!
mrsmatthewperry 01-05-2010, 11:01 PM Dr. Ross Geller...Friends...he went on and on about dinosaurs, fossils, evelution and his undying love for Rachel LOL
