Does anyone ever wish the Kramdens apartment would have been a little more -decorated-? Maybe I've just gotten spoiled by I Love Lucy but as I was watching an episode of The Honeymooners last month I -for the first time ever- found myself getting bored with the old apartment (not the show).
I know the reasons behind the "poor" looking apartment and I still think this is the best show to ever air.. but still I would of liked to have seen maybe a little change in the apartment. Like in "Funny Money" when Ralph re-decorates for Alice.. I think Jackie should have kept it that way. I also wish some scenes would have taken place in the bedroom. There's a lot of funny things they could have done with that plus it would have given an occasional change of scenery.

Anyone else have opinions on the apartment or bedroom?

I have many times had the same thoughts about the Kramden's apartment.
Especially in "Funny Money", I wish they would have left the apartment the way it was decorated. It seems that if they would have done that then they would have been equal with the Norton's in terms of having a nice place to live. Even though Ed Norton worked in a sewer I always thought that he had a nice apartment to come home to. Also, I do agree with you, they should have showed the Kramden's bedroom. There could have been many funny situations that could have been created had they included it.

Well I for one liked the fact that they were simple.. if the apartment had been fixed up.. we would have never gotten the one liners like "this place looks like yucca flats after the Blast" or how about this gem.. (speaking on living in a tent with ralph) "I'd still be willing! I think it' be an improvement! We would have never had the episode tv or not tv! funny money would not have been so funny! And like jackie said he wanted it to be like it was when he was really growing up in brooklyn! thats how he lived! also.. Like we all know that jackie didn't want a phone in the house because then the writers would get lazy and use it as a crutch!.. In the end Im thankful for both the simplicity and the familiarity of the whole set! just my opinion!
P.S. How could we ever have survived if they had a refrigirator and never got to hear old true blue norton say: "I'm not sure but I think that ice box might be early ma and pa kettle! lol Just a
jealous observation™

They were supposed to be a low-income family, and Ralph was uber-cheap to boot, i think the apartment carried out that idea perfectly. You couldnt have that show, without that apartment, IMHO. ( They went together like back-bacon and hash browns )

We have some different opinions on this but I can definitely see what your saying :) Do you think the bedroom should have been shown?

Great post Erin!
I have often had some of the same feelings of curiosity. One day I will remodel their kitchen, bedroom and bath. Just for fun. I do agree with Garrity though. It keeps you wondering, so I'm glad they did it that way.
Here are some pics of what I have been playing with in their kitchen, he he...

^^Wow, great job on the pictures! Do you think you could make one of the Kramden's bedroom for me, the way I described it? You'd have to take a look at "The Sleepwalker," as a reference, and I could post the passage from Audrey's book for you, where she describes the furniture and such...

Thanks Erin,
I gotta figure out how to put some buildings or fire escapes out there though.

Hi Bill,
That would be cool if you post the passage. In this drawing, I just estimated the sizes of the walls and such. I might take a look at the diagram in one of my books and make it a little larger. Do you think that they had a living room? Can anyone guess the overall size of an apartmant of that era?
I'll mess around with it some more when I get a little more info and time. It will be fun. I wish I could draw it old fashioned, but the program I use doesn't have some of the older things like the tub, stove, sink, etc.

That's some great info Bill, thanks. I'm afraid I won't be able to incorporate all of it, but it will make it more interesting.
As far as the program, it's called 20/20 Design. It's a design program that I use at work (selling cabinets, countertops, appliances, etc.) It is very costly though. I think either home depot or lowes has a simple free version online somewhere, but I'm sure it is very limited. HEY! I got an idea, why don't you become my technical consultant. It might take us years, but I think it will come out pretty neat.

Hey Garrity!... wow, long time Pal... you know, I couldn't have said it better myself... Gleason KNEW that having the apartment as "dingy" like that would just add to the comedy and funny Alice one-liners... there is a reason why he was a comic genius, and this was one point to prove it... you're dead-on Pal!

The simplicity of the set shows the brilliance of the honeymooners. All (most) of the stories took place in a tiny room w/o any fluff. this made the success rely on the writing and characterization. which it clearly had.

everything the kramdens owned was in 2 drawers of the buearu. how great is that?

and sometimes that thing on the wall was a light switch, and sometimes an outlet. come on now, isn't that enough variation for you?

i'm a designer and there is a common element i see in a lot of different media (design, music, television) is that simplicity is smart.
