View Full Version : Were any shows regularly pre-empted where you lived? noveel 09-03-2007, 11:48 PM They used to do this in Kansas City, they still do it sometimes during non-sweeps periods for Billy Graham specials http://www.wtv-zone.com/dpjohnson/kcit50/ treky 09-04-2007, 12:18 AM in the mid to late 70s; NBC had a show called BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP (later changed to BLACK SHEEP SQUADRON). Our local NBC station used to prempt it every week for a local show, and a UHF station used to show it on Sunday afternoons at 2, or something. And in the early to mid 70s, NBC had a show called MOVIN' ON, but, also, our local NBC station used to preempt it for a local show. But, no other station in our area showed it. Mikado 09-04-2007, 12:19 AM Sorry, couldnt finish reading it, the blue on black lettering is hard on the eyes, I was getting a headache....maybe ill try to read more later....reminds me of when Buffalo got UHF channel 29 around the same time, but their time slots were filled with old time shows, many like Burns and Allen and Ozzie and Harriet in B&W ( Not to mention shows I grew up with like Lost in Space and Gilligans Island ).....in fact, many of the shows I was introduced to on that station, I havent seen since 29 became a FOX affiliate, and went to the same format as any other network station. catlover79 09-04-2007, 01:43 AM In the Cleveland market, WEWS-5 (the ABC affiliate) would sometimes pre-empt Whose Line is it Anyway? to air local specials about the Cleveland Clinic. Then they'd air the WLIIA episode after midnight. I wasn't very happy when they'd do that, needless to say. JulieSomoski 09-04-2007, 12:15 PM In the Cleveland market, WEWS-5 (the ABC affiliate) would sometimes pre-empt Whose Line is it Anyway? to air local specials about the Cleveland Clinic. Then they'd air the WLIIA episode after midnight. I wasn't very happy when they'd do that, needless to say. They used to preempt Whose Line? all the time here in Michigan. Then, they'd burn off the episodes in the summer time, usually at 7pm on Fridays or something like that. Scoobiedoo30 09-04-2007, 12:55 PM Where I Live WGNO 26 Pre-Empted Who Lines is it Anyway because of Low Ratings and Replaced it with Reruns of Home Improvement at 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm CT Time on Friday Night's. catlover79 09-04-2007, 01:34 PM They used to preempt Whose Line? all the time here in Michigan. Then, they'd burn off the episodes in the summer time, usually at 7pm on Fridays or something like that. Another time, there was a local special that pre-empted Sister, Sister on a Friday night. They ended up showing the Sister, Sister episode the next day, on Saturday afternoon. Scoobiedoo30 09-04-2007, 01:37 PM do you remember what time your ABC Station aired Sister Sister that next Afternoon JulieSomoski 09-04-2007, 01:41 PM Another time, there was a local special that pre-empted Sister, Sister on a Friday night. They ended up showing the Sister, Sister episode the next day, on Saturday afternoon. ABC definitely does a lot of preempting. Sister, Sister was never preepted on ABC where I live., although the whole TGIF block was preempted quite often back in like 1996, because of live news coverage in my area, or a miniseries special they aired a few times. I remember it was like the fourth episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and a fourth season episode of Boy meets World ended up airing Saturday at 6pm. Then in 1999 I believe, there was almost a whole week of preemptions because of major shootings that were going on, which lead to a huge forest fire, and it seemed liked almost every night was preempted because of this. Scoobiedoo30 09-04-2007, 01:49 PM when Sister Sister was on The WB Network WGN would Pre-Empt Sister Sister for Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox Baseball Games when they had night time Games Heidi Dawn 09-04-2007, 02:22 PM Well, I watched a lot of American shows on Canadian affiliates. The Canadian channels, like Global, CTV, and CBC, very rarely, pre-empt anything. factsoflife 09-04-2007, 02:29 PM Yes, back in the day NBC used to pre-empt "Brotherly Love" and "Minor Adjustments" very often for football and baseball... i also recall "Punky Brewster" getting pre-empted regularly for sports... in my local area the ABC soaps tend to get pre-empted very often for "breaking news reports", which tends to make me mad. treky 09-05-2007, 03:36 AM when ABC started showing "FRIDAYS" my local ABC station used to preempt it every week for a movie; then show "FRIDAYS" after the movie was over, at around 1:30 or 2. They later stopped doing that, though. In the late 70s, before ABC started airing "FRIDAYS" they used to do this with whatever ABC was showing on friday night. And they used to show their movies without showing the opening, then when it was over they'd show the closing THEN show the opening; for some reason:confused:  When NBC first started showing David Lettermans daytime show (back in 1980) after the first few months; when it started bombing in the ratings, our local NBC station started showing just the first half; then they'd show a local talk show instead. And later, when he started his nighttime show, they wouldn't show it at all, and instead show reruns of "HAWAII FIVE-O" then people complained, so they started showing it, but AFTER the NBC broadcast; at 1:30. Then people still complained that they weren't showing it when the rest of the country was seeing it; so they took off "HAWAII FIVE-O" and started showing him at it's usual time. TJ 01-29-2023, 07:14 PM My Atlanta ABC affiliate (WSB) didn't start airing Jimmy Kimmel Live until July 10, 2007. I wasn't able to watch the first four years. They aired repeats of Entertainment Tonight and the news instead. I guess they made more money that way. Atlanta and Charlotte were the last ABC affiliates to air him. https://www.ajc.com/life/radiotvtalk-blog/2007-flashback-jimmy-kimmel-finally-added-to-atlanta-airwaves-after-four-years/5TENX3RSQ5GGRNIJFSNX7I3QHM/ https://www.tvweek.com/in-depth/2007/07/kimmel-to-air-in-atlanta-charl/ WSB will occasionally preempt some of ABC's regular primetime programming for specials. They show the scheduled episodes overnight. stevea 01-29-2023, 07:41 PM WFIL/WPVI in Philadelphia has a long history of pre-empting ABC network programming. It's well-known--here's a brief rundown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WPVI-TV#Past_program_preemptions_and_deferrals I can remember back in the 1960s they would preempt the network feed of a popular show such as The Dating Game, and sometimes would play it at some low-viewer time, but it would be a low-quality black and white kinescope. JamesG 01-29-2023, 08:52 PM With big situations, like September 11th, I could understand that they would interrupt regular programming for news broadcasts. I've never understood why they just don't leave the news for the 24/7 news networks. My sister used to get really mad back when President Obama's speeches would interrupt her ABC daytime soaps. Yong Fang 01-30-2023, 03:10 AM I remember once in the 1990's that the local affiliate of a network preempting the evening's network lineup for some local charity. I was livid and called the station complaining. I also remember as a child I would watch The Munsters and Leave it to Beaver at 3:00 when I came home from school, but about once a month, the network CBS had tgeir version of the "Afterschool Special" which also annoyed me. It is nice now to live in an age where I can watch any show anytime I want. treky 01-30-2023, 03:48 AM I remember back in 1973 our local NBC affiliate used to pre-empt NBCs programming for reruns of an ABC show from 1972 called THE KOPYKATS. And when David Lettermans show was on NBC on weekday mornings they would only show the first half hour and show a local talk show instead of the second half. And when NBC moved his show to weeknights they didn't carry it At all and would show reruns of HAWAII 5-0 instead. People complained so they started to carry it but on a delayed basis at 1: 30 after HAWAII 5-0. People then complained because they weren't showing it at the network time of 12:30 so they took off HAWAII 5-0 and replaced it with Letterman howilu 01-30-2023, 10:43 AM When I moved from New Jersey to Minnesota in 1972, the Twin Cities network affiliates preempted network programming in favor of local or syndicated programming. For a couple of years in the spring and summer, WCC0-TV carried the Twins in prime time, blacking out the network shows. Some of them were carried on an independent station. When KSTP moved from NBC to CBS in 1979, the station didn't carry The Edge of Night. Also, when WTCN (now KARE) became an NBC affiliate in 1979, in the early 1980s, they blacked out part of the Friday night prime time lineup in favor of a movie. I should also add that KSTP for several weeks in the winter of 1981 didn't carry the Pro Bowlers Tour. Instead they ran a movie as well as the miniseries Testimony of Two Men. But thanks to local bowling fans, the bowling show returned to KSTP. 80sTrivia 01-30-2023, 01:02 PM Definitely the soaps. My mother would record As the World Turns and Young & Restless, and I remember how upset she would be when she went to watch them after preparing dinner and it would be preempted by a report on the Gulf War or the OJ Simpson trial! Yong Fang 01-31-2023, 06:53 AM When the show SOAP was on the first season, the local ABC affiliate would not show it, and in its place showed.......Gomer Pyle USMC. Showed a show that ended over a decade before, from another network, headed ironically by a gay actor. The station I guess didnt want to show it because it was Memphis, and the Baptist south and the churchies didnt want it on. Reminds me of that WKRP in Cincinnati episode of "Clean Up Radio Everywhere." I guess the affiliate got another bunch of angry calls from people who wanted to see the show and not old reruns of Gomer Pyle. Most of us then only had three entertainment channels and have heard about Soap and rightfully wanted to see it for themselves. SOAP is an excellent example of people making a big fuss and noise instead of simply not watching the program. At least our local ABC affiliate finally made the right move (although it might have been ABC mandating them and not the viewers themselves.) If other stations did that it probably accelerated AW's cancellation. 80sTrivia 01-31-2023, 06:49 PM WTHR moved Another World to mornings for years, in favor Dr. Oz and other stuff like that. If other stations did that it probably accelerated AW's cancellation. Soaps that aired during the 12:30PM time slot were notoriously victims of local stations pre-empting them for the local news hour (12:00-1:00PM). Soaps such as Loving, Ryan's Hope & Search for Tomorrow that were scheduled at 1230 were pre-empted by many local affiliates. Some would air the episodes at other times (such as 2 o'clock in the morning) but many stations simply never aired the soaps period, which ultimately lead to their cancellations. Sal 01-31-2023, 08:18 PM The only program that I can recall being victimized by being pre-empted was "American Bandstand". Ironically, the show was one of the longest running series of all time, airing on most ABC stations from 1957-86, but on WKBW TV, Channel 7 in Buffalo, the last time it was seen would have been around 1973 or 1974. After that, it was always pre-empted for local public affairs series. I don't mean once in a while, or once or twice on special occasions, (like the Bills winning a game!), I mean always, as in every week! I have never been able to figure out why. It just defies logic. Since then, I have hated Buffalo with a passion and consider it the worst city in the US and not just because their TV programmers are dumber than a bag of chicken wings. (The Sabres suck too!) I did manage to watch the show before the ban took hold and I began to like it, not realizing that it had a short life span before it would be gone. I still can't believe it. KurtfromPitts 02-01-2023, 12:01 PM In Pittsburgh Art Fleming Jeopardy! was pre-empted for news at noon for most of the time J! was in that slot. KDKA-2 pre-empted CBS's mid-afternoon shows to run movies and then Mike Douglas in the '50s, '60s and early '70s. stevea 02-01-2023, 12:03 PM In Pittsburgh Art Fleming Jeopardy! was pre-empted for news at noon for most of the time J! was in that slot. Worse, CBS deal with college basketball ruined Saturday mornings at 10 AM throughout the season - meaning Scooby Doo, Josie and the Pussycats, The Archies, The Monkees reruns and more were bounced off the schedule. I still dislike basketball! |
