Ok so that's what happened that caused the ratings to fall because I always wondered why the show was so succcesful in season 1 and fell off in season 2

I never knew that was the reason for it's cancellation. But I really thought Cloris was brilliant in this show - much better than she was in The Facts of Life. I would have liked to have seen it go on a little longer. But, I would have also liked to see Phyllis stay on MTM-LOL. Once her and Rhoda left, things weren't the same.

Had Barbara Colby lived, the show would have been a massive hit.

I'm afraid it was both. CBS should have renewed the show for a third season. The final episode revealed that Bess was pregnant. Must I pretend to renew the series for a third season in order to give the show a proper series finale? None of the Mary Tyler Moore Show's three spinoffs have had proper series finales.
