Beloved screen classic The Wizard of Oz is to remade by comic book writer Todd McFarlane.

The 1939 classic is to get a gritty makeover in the new version, which will be released to coincide with the original's 70th anniversary.

McFarlane, who created violent comic book series Spawn and has written for Spider-Man in the past, says, "My pitch was 'How do we get the people who went to The Lord of The Rings to embrace Oz.' I want to create an interpretation that has the 2007 wow factor."

A History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson has been handed the scripting duties.

Didn't Hollywood learn after the 1978 Motown financed disaster, The Wiz? I have seen The Wiz on stage (a private high school drama presentation) and it was far better than the movie.

Do a web search - Motown spent a fortune to make The Wiz and lost even more when it flopped. Diana Ross was done as a movie star.

Who's going to play Dorothy in this version - Lindsay Lohan? Paris Hilton? God help us all.

Lindsay's career is essentially over, I think.

Personally I have always loved the idea of doing a new version of The Wizard Of Oz.
Todd McFarlane has been talking about this idea for years, and a few years ago his toy divisin did some action figures based on his totally twisted take on the characters.

But...

The Sci Fi Channel is doing a "re-imaging" of the Wizard Of Oz saga this December called "Tin Man."

Looks to me like they missed the boat.

I actually liked "The Wiz" It bombed at the theatres, but I think it became popular as it was rerun over the years.

I do agree, The Wizard Of Oz is one of those classics you can't update, even if they do an up to date white version, it just won't work.

I'm one of the few people here who like "The Wiz." There are people who will strongly disagree with me on this but I liked it better than "The Wizard of Oz." I've never really gotten into the original, even when I was a kid.

That doesn't mean that "The Wizard of Oz" should be remade. Even though I think the original is overrated (and I do not say it lightly) it is one of those films that is so adored and admired by critics and movie buffs alike (except me) that it is untouchable.

The Wizard of Oz is a series of books that has a lot of material which would be great for more adaptations. This doesn't sound like a generic remake of the 1939 film, but rather a re-imagining. While some remakes stink this one sounds like it has a unique vision. Does anyone else find it old every time an article is posted about a certain "remake" that people immediately start in with the complaining?

I don't. For the most part most remakes suck.

I'll agree a lot aren't that great, but some stories are timeless so why not use their material for another adaptation? This new Wizard of Oz film doesn't sound like its going to a musical, so I say why not.

I agree with the majority. Remaking classics?? Phooey!! It's re-inventing the wheel and for the birds. It's also bad from a strategic standpoint--whatever classic someone "redoes" is going to be compared to the masterpiece and fall short--often woefully short. Thank God some masterpieces are so highly original, innovative and associated with the original actors that remakes are virtually impossible --like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, for example.

I agree. The Psycho remake was one of the worst. It was just about a scene for scene remake ...why bother? The only difference was it was in color . I think Hollywood has run out of ideas.

This reminds me of the outcry a few years ago when Tim Burton made a second adaptation of Roald Dahl's book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory: he was accused of remaking 1971's adaptation, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. What turned out to be the truth was the the newer film, although taking liberties of its own, was far more true to the original book than its predecessor.

Let's not forget that the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz was based on the book The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, which was published in 1900. Let's not also forget that the 1939 film is the fourth or fifth movie adaptation of the book, but we would hardly call the film a "remake" of those silent movies.

Having said that, I highly doubt Todd McFarlane is going to remake the musical film. It seems to me that his movie would be just a different take on the book. I believe McFarlane's adaptation would be more true to the original book, and open the possibility for an Oz film series based on more of Baum's Oz books (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oz_books).

The author of this article, as well as the editor who allowed it to be published, would have done well to do a little bit more research before they started crying "remake of a well-known 1939 movie."

The person who wrote the news piece I posted wasn't crying about anything. The 1939 movie version is the one that counts. It's going to be a gritty adaptation, according to McFarlane.

I never liked the movie. The originally the studios didn't have the balls to turn these books into a movie right! The books were exceptionally dark. The tin man was a real man who had a curse put on him that made him slowly cut parts of himself off. Each time he cut a part of himself away it was replaced with tin. He eventually cut out his own heart forgetting his true love. The musical crappy movie that was made poorly mimicked the books. Therefore the original movie was a bad remake of the books!

I'm not against a remake but I dont think anything could compare to the 1939film.
