View Full Version : I've Been Approved For A Government Check Because My Psychiatrist Said...............
isiahthomas 08-24-2007, 07:40 PM i have a learning disability which is preventing me from getting a good paying job so i can take care of myself. I went to see another psychiatrist so i could get a 2nd opinion about my problem and he ran some tests on my brain and he came to the conclusion that i have a learning disability. So then he told me to call a 1-800 number to talk to a government employee and show them medical proof from my psychiatrist that i'm mentally disabled so i could qualify for a government assistance check every month. The government employee i talked to told me i will be getting $2,000 every month. I was shocked. I didn't think i would get that much money. I told my psychiatrist that i didn't wanna quit my daytime full time job as a porter/janitor and he said that it's ok for me to continue to work there. I told him that i do wanna quit my 2nd job so he said i can do that. Well with this government money i'll be getting, i'll finally be able to move outta my parents house and get my own place. I did some research about learning disability last week at the library and i printed out 3 pages of information from the internet. Everything i read is exactly the problem i have. I should've did some research on this a long time ago when i kept losing jobs because i should've known then that something was wrong with me but i always thought nothing was wrong with me. It's not normal for a person to continue losing jobs so that's why i should've known i had a problem. I also should've known i had a problem because i'm afraid to apply for good paying jobs because good paying jobs require you to use your brain and figure things out. Jobs that pay low salaries don't require a lot of figuring things out. Janitorial work is the only job i've been good at doing because it doesn't require you to use your brain and the work is simple. I've tried other jobs where you have to use your brain and i haven't succeeded at keeping those jobs. I know it's not normal for a person like myself to be 30 years old and living with your parents and jobhopping making a low salary. How come i'm the only one who sees something is wrong with me? I've tried explaining my problem to my parents but they don't wanna believe me. I don't know what more i have to do to show them something is wrong with my brain. My brother is the only person who understands that something is wrong with me because he told me a long time ago that he thinks i have a mental block.
catlover79 08-24-2007, 07:55 PM I hope everything turns out OK for you. Keep us posted.
isiahthomas 08-24-2007, 08:22 PM I'll keep you posted. I'd rather work than sit at home but i can't control my problem. Sometimes things happen in life that you have no control over and this learning disability i have is something i can't control that i wish i could fix. I love money and i would like to have a lot of it but that's not gonna happen if i can't work. I would like to have a nicer car but it takes a lot of money to get that and maybe i could get it since this government check i'll be getting could help. I'm glad this other psychiatrist i saw didn't recommend that i take some medication to help my problem because he told me realistically that medication can't help a person who has a learning disability all of a sudden be able to figure things out.

dawsongirl 08-24-2007, 09:25 PM It's good you're choosing to keep your day job. Sitting around can get boring sometimes. And that way you still feel productive. I have an uncle on disability who refuses to work. I hate him because he's not even "disabled." He's diabetic. All sorts of diabetics work. He's just a piece of crap imo.
Ireneparalegal 08-24-2007, 11:18 PM It is good to hear that you followed up on what you said you were going to do. Seeing a psychiatrist, therapist, etc. is not a bad thing. It is only a bad thing if you need their help and don't seek it.
coffield3 08-25-2007, 01:24 AM It's good you're choosing to keep your day job. Sitting around can get boring sometimes. And that way you still feel productive. I have a cousin who refuses to work and she has diabeties, its not the bad kind she dosnt have to inject herself, she is a lazy sod that dosnt want to work so uses that as an excuse. I know alot of diabetics that work.
Max Whittaker 08-25-2007, 02:20 AM I also love to work. I'm grateful that I'm able to work and I can't stand laziness.
I'm glad you've received assistance, but don't ever let anybody limit you- even the government.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 11:39 AM I am not denying what you are saying is true, but $2,000 a month because of a learning disability? Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that?
There are people who still have to bust their asses in their 60's and 70's to make that kind of money. There are people who work two or even three jobs that need to support their families and because of a "learning disability" others get a free hand out.
I am sorry, but I think that is totally bull****! I have no problem with people who have severe mental illness and disabilities getting money from the government, but some of this sounds like pure laziness. I have been diagnosed with depression and bi polar disorder and also have suffered from seizures, but I bust my ass day in and out to make a living.
I started working as an unpaid intern and then got a job paying about 9 bucks and hour and through hard work and long hours kept getting promoted to where I am now. I'm sorry, but some of this seems to be pure nonsense.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 11:52 AM Brian you always got something negative to say about me everytime i post. I don't give a damn that you don't believe me that i'm gonna get $2,000 a month. Don't get mad because i'm gonna get a lot of money every month and you will probably never see that much money working. Do something about trying to make more money instead of getting mad at other people for getting lots of money for doing nothing.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 11:57 AM Brian you've also called me lazy before and i'm tired of you saying that about me. I'm not lazy. I said that i wanna work but what am i supposed to do when i can't figure things out so i can get a good job? How else am i supposed to take care of myself? I need to get money from the government in order to live or i might as well be dead because without money, i can't take care of myself. You think employers are gonna feel sorry for me when i fill out a job application and i tell them that i have a learning disability and it's hard for me to figure things out? You think they're gonna hire me? I don't think so because a employer would rather hire somebody who can do the job well rather than hire a person with a disability.

1. I make a heck of a lot more than 2,000 a month.
2. Learning Disabilities doesn't prevent somebody from working...laziness does.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 12:13 PM Brian you've also called me lazy before and i'm tired of you saying that about me. I'm not lazy. I said that i wanna work but what am i supposed to do when i can't figure things out so i can get a good job? How else am i supposed to take care of myself? A learning disability can be corrected...other mental illnesses sadly, cannot. You yourself have posted several different times that you don't want to work hard, you want easier jobs that make a lot of money such as acting. You said that...not me.
Janice 08-25-2007, 12:16 PM You might want to double check that figure of 2 grand a month. I have an aunt, an uncle, a daughter-in-law, sister-in-law (now deceased) and a niece who get disability checks from the government, and the largest amount I've heard of is $750. Are you referring to SSI (Supplemental Security Income)?
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:17 PM How do you figure a learning disability doesn't prevent people from working? Have you done research about it? No. I've done some research about it and i read that it can prevent you from working because if your brain doesn't allow you to figure things out, how can you do your job? A supervisor isn't gonna tell a person everything to do all the time on the job. A supervisor pays a employee to do their job. A supervisor doesn't pay a employee to tell them everything to do. A employee has to figure things out on their own about their job. I've had jobs before that i've been fired from because my supervisors told me i work too slow. I blame myself for that because i shouldn't be working at my own pace but i've never been a fast worker. I know from now on i will never apply for a hard labor job ever again because the work is too hard. I've had several factory hard labor jobs that paid a low salary and those jobs are too much to handle. Jobs like that shouldn't be paying a low salary.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:20 PM No i'm not referring to SSI. I don't think i would be qualified to get a SSI check anyway. I have a female cousin who gets a SSI check. I don't know why she gets a check because she's able to work. She's not disabled. I just think she might have something wrong with her brain because she acts very immature for her age and she's the same age as me.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:21 PM I meant to say that a supervisor doesn't pay a employee to do the employee's job for them.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 12:24 PM Like I said, learning disabilities can be corrected or at the very least controlled. Have you looked into those programs? I was fired from a bunch of jobs, because I didn't work fast enough. You know what I did, I kept on working. It is much better than getting a free handout.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:26 PM Yes Brian i do remember saying those things but i was ignorant when i said that. I've grown a lot since then and i still believe in not working hard because a person can work hard at their job and not get rewarded. My dad is a hard worker and it doesn't mean anything because he's told me that he hasn't gotten a raise in a very long time at his job and he also told me that his boss is trying to fire him by giving him a lot of work to do and he's said that some of his co-workers are trying to set him up to get fired. That's f*cked up that people are dirty like that. Good employees like my dad shouldn't be treated like that. My uncle is also a hard worker and he doesn't get paid a lot of money at his job and he's been driving a towmotor for a long time. So do you get my point Brian that hard work means nothing because most supervisors won't reward their employees with more money that work hard?
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 12:34 PM Yes Brian i do remember saying those things but i was ignorant when i said that. So do you get my point Brian that hard work means nothing because most supervisors won't reward their employees with more money that work hard?
Hard work does mean something. You can't get by by taking it easy. I am sorry to hear about your Dad's situation, but NOTHING replaces hard work.
Janice 08-25-2007, 12:36 PM No i'm not referring to SSI. I don't think i would be qualified to get a SSI check anyway. I have a female cousin who gets a SSI check. I don't know why she gets a check because she's able to work. She's not disabled. I just think she might have something wrong with her brain because she acts very immature for her age and she's the same age as me.
The reason for the disability doesn't matter. SSI checks are for disabled people whether they're crippled, mentally disabled (bi-polar, etc.), severe physical illness (cancer, bad arthritis, bad backs, etc). If you're not getting SSI, what kind of check are you getting? I've never heard of the government giving out $2,000 monthly checks, and I know the system.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:39 PM Yes i agree that working is better than getting a free check but i don't know what else to do if i can't use my brain. I've always been terrible at using my brain and figuring things out. This problem for me first started in middle school and then it continued when i was in high school because i wasn't a good student in middle school and high school. I always had a hard time studying for tests and trying to remember what i studied. My father has always gotten on my case about not figuring things out and just randomly doing things without giving any thought to what i'm doing. I should've gotten help from a doctor or psychiatrist a long time ago when i had this problem when i was in school but i just thought that everything was fine with me and now that i'm older and i see how hard it is for me to get a good job, i realize that something is wrong with me. That's why i went to see a psychiatrist and i thank god i finally stayed with a job long enough so i could get health insurance so i could seek help. I get so depressed at times and suicidal and i hate being that way because my life sucks. It bothers me that i have never made a lot of money working so i could go on vacations, buy nice clothes, buy a nice car, buy lots of music cd's, have my own place. I'm not the type of person to want a lot of things but it would be nice to be able to have those things and be able to go on vacations and it requires a lot of money to have those things.
My father just doesn't understand that i want to live on my own. I need to have my privacy because i don't like having to tell my parents that i'm gonna be out late at night or i have to ask them if it's ok for me to bring a woman home. If i had my own place, i wouldn't have to answer to nobody about what i wanna do. That's why i don't have a woman because it would be embarrassing for me to tell a woman that i live with my parents.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 12:49 PM I totally understand wanting to live on your own. The thing is, it is much, much easier to find something wrong and why you can't make a living, than actually going out there and make one.
People today look for excuses why they can't work, instead of busting their hump and work.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 12:59 PM Brian what you need to understand is that job supervisors don't have sympathy for people who have disabilities which is preventing them from working whether it's a mental disability or a physical disability. Like i told you, you think a job is gonna hire me if i put on my application that i have a learning disability which prevents me from figuring things out so i can keep a job? A supervisor that does the hiring isn't gonna have sympathy for me and give me a job when he or she knows i need money to live. I'm not making excuses because i really do wanna work but nobody is gonna hire me for a good paying job because of my problem. I'm just being realistic. Only type of job i would be able to get is a low paying job which i don't want because i won't be able to get my own place in a nice neighborhood and buy a nice car making a low salary. Those things i won't be able to get and that would upset me because i want those things.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 01:05 PM Brian what you need to understand is that job supervisors don't have sympathy for people who have disabilities which is preventing them from working whether it's a mental disability or a physical disability. Like i told you, you think a job is gonna hire me if i put on my application that i have a learning disability which prevents me from figuring things out so i can keep a job? That seems to be a part of your problem, you have a "defeatist attitude." You assume the worst. Like I said, there are programs that can really help with your disability, but you have got to want to help yourself.
It's not that you can't work, it is that you don't want to work.
isiahthomas 08-25-2007, 01:23 PM Fine Brian. I will look into some programs that will help me get a good job and keep a job so i won't get fired because lord knows i've had lots of jobs i've been fired from and that looks bad for my employment history. That's why i know something is wrong with me. I know the reason why a lot of jobs haven't called me that i've applied for is because when they look at my application, they see i've done a lot of jobhopping and that's not good. I do admit i can be lazy when it comes to doing jobs that require working hard. That's why i don't apply for jobs like hard labor because the work is hard and strenuous and it can make you stressed out and tired. I've been thinking about doing office work but i don't know if i could handle that. My dad has a office job and sometimes he has to work long hours and i don't want a job working long hours. I just want a 40 hours a week job with no weekends. I like r&b and rap music and that's why i was thinking about working for a record company but that would require living in New York or Los Angeles and those cities are too hectic and there's too many people in those cities. I didn't like living in Maryland and Virginia because the traffic is always bad and i don't wanna live in a city that has bad traffic and a lot of people. Cleveland is just right for me because it's not hectic and there's not a lot of people here. Plus the cost of living is less expensive than those cities i mentioned.

You're definitely not the only one. $2,000 per month is a pile of money for not working.
GARFIELDKOOL 08-25-2007, 02:10 PM $2,000 a month?! Damn, that's a lot of money! My friend's uncle get's over $1,100 a month because he permantley injured his voice in the service. My Mother gets disability, but she gets over $500 a month, and know she gets Social Security. i wish i was getting that kind of money whether I am working or not.
Ireneparalegal 08-25-2007, 02:16 PM Brian you always got something negative to say about me everytime i post. I don't give a damn that you don't believe me that i'm gonna get $2,000 a month. I don't think that is what Brian is saying. He is saying that for someone to receive $2000 a month for a disability is a lot of money. And it seems you can type, do other sorts of work, etc. When I was disabled from my work after I hurt my back, I was only getting $900 a month disability. Going from earning $2500 a month to getting only $900 was bulls*t. Can't pay bills with that kind of money.
And it seems Isiah, you made a thread abt homeless people and how they SHOULD DO SOMETHING so they aren't homeless. You implied they are lazy and don't want to work. It seems you are sending that same message with this thread. You can get free money by having a learning disability. If you are going to have that kind of money, use it wisely.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 08:47 PM Irene you make a good point as does Dutabi, a learning disability doesn't prevent someone from working...laziness does. Even if you make a **** salary, then go out and get another job. Work two jobs if you have to, but to take a hand out for some BS condition is just that...BS!
People who suffer from severe mental disabilities definitely deserve the help. I am not denying that, but I have a big problem with the government taking out all this money in my check in taxes to support laziness.
TVFactFan 08-25-2007, 09:03 PM Brian you always got something negative to say about me everytime i post. I don't give a damn that you don't believe me that i'm gonna get $2,000 a month. It does seem like a lot of money-lol That's almost $35,000 a year so you should defintely have your own place by the end of the year because all you would have to do is stack the SSI checks and that will have you at $8000n in 4 months. DAMM!,
TVFactFan 08-25-2007, 09:08 PM The reason for the disability doesn't matter. Ireneparalegal 08-25-2007, 09:42 PM SSI is for those who have some sort of disability and yet, have some other source of income. SSI does just that, SUPPLEMENTS your income.
Isiah, maybe you were told that the most one can get is $2000, not that you would actually get $2000. I don't know, only you know.
And Isiah, it is not about jealousy or that anyone here wishes they could get free money. We are only saying that you better be prepared to deal with the IRS because that is not necessarily free money. Also, it seems that you are capable of typing and other things since you have been able to work for sometime now.
I have seen many people with some sort of disability and YES, learning disabilities, and yet, they work. They may not have a career, but they work at grocery stores, they work as clerks, they do hard work. There are MANY MANY JOBS that you can do. I get the feeling that you just want to leave your parents house. You complained abt having to work two jobs and you were still living at home.
There is a woman who lost both her arms to a rapist and I just seen her in the grocery store a few months ago. You know how that woman makes a living? SHE PAINTS AND MAKES ART. She has no hands, no arms, but she can paint and make such beautiful pictures. Sure it isn't making millions, but she is self sufficient. I believe she also receives SSI, but she isn't allowing herself to be taken care of by the system/government.
Janice 08-25-2007, 09:52 PM I'm thinking that there's a miscommunication here, Isiah. If you applied a while back, this $2,000 may be a retroactive check. I know so many who people who collect disability, and to collect 2 grand a month from the government is unheard of.
Brian Damage 08-25-2007, 10:06 PM I'm thinking that there's a miscommunication here, Isiah. If you applied a while back, this $2,000 may be a retroactive check. I know so many who people who collect disability, and to collect 2 grand a month from the government is unheard of.
That is unheard of. I have zero jealousy towards Isiah. What angers me is the excuse that I have a learning disability, therefor I can't work. That to me is BS.
Chelsea 08-25-2007, 10:21 PM It sounds to me as though the $2000 check *is* a retroactive one. The only people I've ever known to get $2000+ a month *every* check are families with several dependent children and who have obvious disabilities that outright prohibit work.
Janice is right, the $2000 sounds like a one-off occurance, with the regular check being lower. Or the $2000 could be an oversight.

Can you imagine if it is an oversight? How many other "oversights" are people getting????? :faint: No wonder our deficit is the way it is.
Chelsea 08-25-2007, 10:25 PM I have absolutely zero problem when tax monies are going to folks with legitimate need for the money. And I can't say one thing or another about the case here. But if even 1 in 100 cases results in an oversight check, imagine all the money being spent that shouldn't be that could be used for so many other things (transporation and infrastructure enhancement, education funding, military spending, other social problems...so many possibilities)
TVFactFan 08-25-2007, 10:26 PM Can you imagine if it is an oversight? How many other "oversights" are people getting????? :faint: No wonder our deficit is the way it is.

isiahthomas 08-27-2007, 09:39 AM LOL@Solomon you're crazy hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. I lied ya'll. I'm not getting $2,000 a month but i wish i was. Brian your right that i have a defeatist attitude because i've been fired from a lot of jobs and i've only had low paying jobs that were through temp agencies. So yes i have low self esteem when it comes to getting a good job and keeping the job because i know from the past that i've had a hard time keeping a job. I'm scared to apply for jobs that pay good money because my brain won't allow me to figure things out and remember things so i can get a good job. That's one of the reasons why i never went to college because of the way my brain works. For some reason, i get easily distracted and my brain wanders when i study and read books. I wish my brain wasn't like this because i really want a job that pays a lot of money because i love money and i wanna live on my own and be able to buy a nice car and other things that i can't afford to buy now because i don't make enough money. It sucks working a job that pays a low salary because that means you can't afford to buy things that you wanna buy because of limited funds. That's why i can understand why people kill themselves who are poor and have no money because it's a b*tch having no money. Having no money will make a person wanna kill themselves. Brian you keep acting like it's that easy to get a good job. It's not easy. Getting a job period is not easy for anybody because there's plenty of people who are highly educated and they can't get a good job.
Brian Damage 08-27-2007, 10:03 AM There was no reason to lie. I know it isn't easy getting a job, but you have got to hustle to get one. Hard work DOES pay off.

You know, my back has been hurting a lot more lately...;) What was that 1-800 number????
TVFactFan 08-27-2007, 06:19 PM LOL@Solomon you're crazy hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. ThomasE 08-31-2007, 12:10 AM 1. I make a heck of a lot more than 2,000 a month.
Brian, with you living in NYC, I did not doubt that for a moment. When I saw that comment I was like, "I think that he makes more than that". LOL.
Anyway, I have a friend who was discharged from the army because he had a psychological problem. He could not remain focused and would get anxiety attacks. The problem was written off as a mental issue and the dude was getting almost 4,000 a month in checks. He gets less now, but I am sure that the amount is still substantial. If he manages his money right, he will have nothing to worry about. He shares a home with his siblings and has minimal bills. I would love to sit home and do that....amd no I am not making this up. LOL.

My understanding is if one has been in the military and had a disability of some sort, the government $$$ is better than the social security.
Get this, a friend of my ex-husband's was in the army. While he was drunk driving, he crashed and became paralyzed from the waist down. He
received over $5500 per month back in the late 80's. I imagine it is more now. He owns one of the most beautiful homes one can get in the county here. He has two cars, which are modified so he can drive it. And guess what? He has been arrested at least ONCE for DUI. YES, THAT IS RIGHT, A PARALYZED MAN ARRESTED FOR DUI. He has $$$, he has the biggest tv I ever seen, and this was back in 1987, before big tv's became the "norm". Geez, talk abt government $$$ going to waste. I can see if he became injured while doing something that he wasn't committing a crime. Crazy sh*t.

ThomasE 08-31-2007, 08:06 PM Goodness gracious. If I was getting free money, I would definitely get some investments.
